I like when he says, “I’ll do so many stops - I don’t care” lol. So true though - I have all day when it comes to pulling. Eventually the dog gets sick of the delays and complies. Don’t let your dog drag you! Stay consistent and it will happen. Just ask this guy in the video.

I’m extremely happy with the stage I’m at with him. I can walk and forget he’s on leash - not many huskies owners I know can say that. These guys just want to pull and pull. Love these huskies!

I have to tell you this your method is just the best!!!! After finding you at the beginning of the year and using your method, I finally started having really nice calm walks with my young dog... I go away and leave him with friends for 10 days and I came back to a wild 10 month old leash reactive dog!! Yikes!! Not to worry! One walk with your method and he snapped right back!! How can anyone ever thank you for this amazing gift you just keep on giving??? And I'm going to try out all of the lessons of today's video..Thanks Joel you are a boss!!

Thank you for your insight. I try to tell people that they are the cause and the solution to their dog's reactivity issues. They get very defensive, especially if they already own dogs. They think owning a few small lap dogs is enough experience to be an expert in a large working breed. I've heard Joel say you need to work with hundreds of dogs before you can even call yourself experienced with dogs. The day/night behavior change when with your friend and then back home is a great example of the human being the cause and the solution. Great job with your dog!

Went to training last night and there was a super reactive GSD there. Him going off set my dog off, the “butt flip” worked wonders, I always use it now. I could use ‘leave it’ then, with a couple corrections on the flat collar and he would hear me, and we were good for the session. Love your methods. 👏

The rescue dog I took in, a Boxer Staff cross, had severe leash reactivity when I first got him. He was as bad as the worst dogs that I've seen on here. Anxious, dominant and very strong. Im my house he would bark at lampshades, hoovers etc. I sorted that out in a couple of months, now he is great in the house. With lot of work and calming methods and a lot of treats outside, I could get to within 40-50 ft of another dog before he reacted but no closer.
Using Beckman's leash popping method and the use of my legs and touch, I can now get within 5 ft of a dog before he reacts. When he does react now, it is a playful reaction, not a fearful, lounging reaction anymore.
I have even manage to even get him to sniff a couple of dogs, and they sniff him. Still work to do, but this method is the better than any other method.
    Thanks Beckman, subscribed!

This method has worked wonders for my weimaraner puppy and me. Before I saw this video I wasn't enjoying walking my dog. It felt like a constant tug of war battle that my pup was definitely winning. He didn't really pay me much attention on walks and use to try and pull me over to every tree and post he saw. After just two days of applying your methods he is a completely different dog. I can now walk him with a loose leash, which I never thought would be possible. He's paying me attention now which he never did before. He's not perfect but after 2 days I'm amazed how quick this method starts to work.

My mom used to say “I am not going to pay you to be a member of this family” no allowance. We did get paid for taking chores off their hands. I really like your methods. You give him treats to get his brain in the right spot but not for everything. I need my dog to listen even when I don’t have treats. The walk is for me too I don’t what to wrestle with the dog the whole time. I don’t relieve my stress that way. I have a very smart 150lb mastiff and your methods have been perfect for us. Her thing is she wants to run to play with other dogs. But her dragging me to another dog is terrifying for everyone. The other dog is seeing the mountain bounding at them uninvited sometimes they want to guard some times they want to run. The owners just want to run.

years ago a trainer taught my dog “curb”, you swipe your arm to indicate where the curb is, door frame, gate, it’s not a stay….the dog knows, they want me to not step over that line, it’s temporary, the dog knows it and quickly learns it’s only a pause before the reward, a walk, or to go outside…i’ve used it on my puppy from the beginning, she doesn’t lung from doors or the gate.

I watched this video last night…mind you I’ve watched your channel for a few months and I started your method on my 7 month old pit pup….she did phenomenal!!! She is a quick learner so I wasn’t too shocked but when I tell you she was by my side for a good 2 blocks….she was so good!! We do however have leash reactivity for other dogs and we seen the same one from yesterday…..she still had fur up and stood there with her weight pulling against me….so I just pulled her bc the leash had no slack at that point….then I sat her down after walking a few steps and she stood there looking at me and got a reward
Edit: I’m glad I found your channel before I could start leash work with her because she’s getting really big….she’s already around 70 lbs at 7 months old….she’s just gonna bulk out more and I can’t have a big ass dog pulling me down the street (for reference I’m a little over 100lbs so…that would be a big issue)

I like this, that you let him look for a minute to get it out. Instead of leash pop after leash pop, just for looking. Like my trainer wants. I had to tell her to lighten up. Last night, on our neighborhood walk, I let him look at the German Shepherd that is also reactive. I let him look for a short time, but then told him lets go. I was so happy he made the choice to move on, instead of lunging crazily like he usually does. Even the shepherd only let out one little bark instead of going crazy.

Great video & yes, you cleared that out perfectly! Some are bold "I want to pull to what I want" and some other's have a different reactivity. I would love to see daily or weekly progress on this one, seeing whether the dog reactivity gets "better" or he'll have those freak-outs at least once a day (crossing dogs). We can already see in the video the second possible freak-out is well prevented but does it help his mental state in the longer term? How he feels about crossing other dogs? It probably will get better from rehearsing and maturing.
With my anxious, reactive one, I redirect with kibble, prevent with pop, touch or voice and as last resort letting it play out and correct. The latter seems less preferred for his mental state. All in all it's great to have all these tools and perspectives thanks to these great trainers.

This comment is not related to the video but I have a question or video suggestion. How would you handle a dog that is a Houdini at getting out of the yard? Watch them constantly and Mark and punish the behavior when they try? I have a pit that can get over even a 7 foot fence, we had to spend thousands at our last place building a fence with planks facing upward to make it 12 foot and even then he learned to find weak boards knock them out jumping up and at them then would jump up and squeeze through. What’s the best way, besides exercise to get rid of excess energy since he’s high drive/energy, to stop that jumping the fence behavior??? I’m really curious what your approach would be or if you’ve ever had to work with a dog that had this issue??? Please answer or make a video!

I love your videos and they've helped me a lot. Could you consider making a video about learning your dog to accept other pets? In short: I had 2 cats (males, 10 and 12y old) before we adopted our labrador/shepperd mix. The cats bailed for a few weeks (they could get inside a room where the dog couldn't get into for food and water), but now the dog has kind of "claimed" the house and garden and he chases the cats when he sees them. I regret that a lot, because I'm sure our oldest cat would give him company when we are working. Thanks.

that's a difficult one, but can be solved. I adopted a dog from Spain (greyhound). the shelter said he would be good with cats but once home he was rude to the cats and wanted to grab them when they ran. it really helps to get angry during an outburst; 'HEY! have you gone mad!” and then make yourself very big and really feel that anger. also say "no" and "leave it" every time he focuses on the cats. of course, reward a lot the good behavior l, eat cookies together with the cats. My dog now gets along very well with the cats. keep going, it’ll be fine :-)

@@Denisedf1994 Thanks. That's what I do, but it's hard for the cats, because they run away all the time so I can't get the dog and cats to get to know each other. By running away they only trigger the instinct of the dog. I guess it will take some time :)

Hi Joel, I noticed that you are correcting the behavior instead of moving farther away. I have a reactive older dog (3 year old lab) who people have been telling me to move farther away from the distraction. Ive been telling people not to approach us (hes friendly but doesn't like men getting to close to me) and yesterday had to walk across a whole soccer field to get him off hyper fixating on a small dog. Should I just stay our course and correct him like this? Im afraid of looking mean myself or looking like I have a mean dog when he just acts like a lunatic on lead and hes a really friendly sweet dog otherwise..

This video is exactly what I needed for my large, leash reactive aussie! I've used all kinds of tools and her heal is great but the reactivity is nuts. The butt flip is the key, corrections don't work. Now when this happens im going to try this instead of just correcting the crap out of her and her not caring....she is almost 2 years old so no excuse to be an idiot when we see other dogs.

Hi Joel. I have a 9 month old pup that is currently right in the middle of a fear period.
My question is, What do I do when my dog is actually very afraid of something while we are on the leash? He saw an RC car for the first time recently on a walk and immediately tried to bolt in the other direction.
Others are also free to provide feedback, I just want to help my dog become trustworthy enough to not be worried about when we go hiking and to respond the best I can.

Dear Joel can you do a video on 'reactivity' in the car? Our GSD was perfect in the car, untill about 8 months old. Maybe caused by the fact that a car ride usually takes him to a play ground, family visit etc. When he is in the car, his energy level is through the roof. He wants to bark/lunge at passing cars, he's panting heavily, whining etc. Calming him down with a chewing bone doesn't help. Energy is way to high, he's not interested. I now sit beside him in the back, that seems to help a bit. And reward him he lays down, though he's not calm when he lays down. Not sure if that's the right thing to do. Keeping him away from the window and telling him no when he wants to bark helps a bit. But his energy is still extremely high, it's like an obsession with passing vehicles. He's stressed out. What can we do to help him? Thanks in advance. Your videos have helpt us a lot in improving our walks! Joanne

With a young dog like that who is behaving bad in those fear periods, how do you handle the barking at dogs when you are in the car and you are driving? I’m over trying the super positive approach, I can’t be giving treats while I drive that is not safe. My dog is going to burst my ear drums! Also afraid the more I don’t address it in a way that actually works, the more he will default to the barking and the harder it will be to fix.

Luckily I know now that he is just going through his hormone changes. Suddenly pulling again after bikers too while I thought we were over that. Hi,
I have two Golden doodles (18 months old)that have leash reactivity. I been working with them for quite a while but I can't make this thing work. I normally walk them separately because if they are together each one wants to be the leader and it's a nightmare. Lately i been taken them together at nights and they been improving. They walk next to me but as soon as they see another dog they flip and pull like crazy. They are not agresive but want to meet the other dogs but at the same time the other owners are afraid of them and just move away . It is extrage when i take them to the dog park they are very friendly with the other dogs but when i walk them and they see other dogs they just change. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
