Mushroom picking is indeed very popular in Poland. Our son, who has been living and working in England for over 20 years, invited an English friend he worked with many years ago to visit Poland. We live in the southern part of the country, in the Sudetes Mountains. We showed our friend many tourist attractions and hiked through our mountains, and of course, we took him mushroom picking in the forest.
We didn't expect him to enjoy mushroom picking so much. At the beginning, he would pick any mushrooms, even the poisonous ones, so we taught him how to distinguish between good and bad mushrooms. He became so fond of it that every September, we host him at our place. Over the years, he has visited all the major cities in Poland and almost all regions, but after touring other cities, he traditionally comes to us for a few days of mushroom picking. This has been the case for 14 years, with the exception of the pandemic period. However, this year in September, he visited again, and our mushroom picking adventure was a great success.

The pizza one is wrong, and it's surprising to learn that someone believes that to be a fact. I never ate or encountered pizza without tomato sauce in Poland... I think they may have confused pizza with Polish "zapiekanka"
I too think they might have confused pizza with zapiekanka - I have heard someone from abroad refer to zapiekanka as a "Polish street pizza" so I can see where that leap of thought might have happened.
Looking at a local pizerria menu, (Pomidor Pizza in Gdynia) all pizzas have sauce given as the first ingredient, however if it just says "sauce" it's understood as classic tomato, and there are tsome pizzas that specify another sauce as the base - I see cheese, cream, barbecue, hot and truffle paste, but the majority just go with the classic sauce. Of course, anecdotal evidence is not evidence, but in my experience that has been the case in all the pizza places I ever went to in 35 years of living here.

35 years ago I was in hospital in Oslo .For 3 months,the period of validity of the visa, my wife was with me. The staff was surprised that she has spent 24 hours a day with me (I was separated and was close to death. )After my wife's departure, the nurses asked why my wife made such sacrifices. They asked about our habits in marriage. I replied that in Poland a wife washes her husband's feet and drinks the water. Pizza pochodzi od polskiego słowa "piec". Otóż jeden z kuchcików (najprawdopodobniej Gianfrancesco Melfi) kucharza królowej Bony podsłuchał jak zwykli Polacy wypiekali podpłomyki. Oryginalnie były one pieczone na żarze. Ale, że powstały piece, więc dopiekało się w stygnących komorach chlebowych. Sam podpłomyk smakował zupełnie jak nic. Więc kuchcik, operator rożna i warząchwi, zaryzykował dodanie pokrojonych pomidorów, resztek sera i mięsa, jakie się uchowało. Tak mu to posmakowało, że zapamiętał prosty przepis. Ale, jak to Włoch, przerobił wszystko na swój język. Więc "z pieca" ewoluowało na "spiecca", a to w "pizza". Kiedy został pełnoprawnym kucharzem, powrócił po śmierci Królowej do Włoch i otworzył pierwszą pizzerię.

About pizza - this is not true. We have normal pizza and we can get extra sauce (ketchup and garlic sauce).
Ketchup and garlic sauce is not a pizza sauce. I do agree that polish pizza does not have pizza sauce, never did.

@@jkar4727 I’m talking about pizza, I’ve never seen anyone putting ketchup on pizza accept for Poland, but maybe because I haven’t been to many countries/restaurants where people order pizza. Ketchup definitely goes on zapiekanka, yummy.
@@maggies9597 oh, but just because we dip does not mean there is no sauce on the dough and under the ingredients. We just add more on top. And that is why we add ketchup or garlick sauce - the pizza already has pizza sauce, there would be no point in topping it with another batch of pizza sauce ; )
However I can confirm pizzas do have sauce. I am looking at a menu of pomidorpizza here in Gdynia, and yep, every single pizza has "sos" (sauce) listed as the first ingredient. Next time you order pizza here, before you bite into it look at it and for sure you will see the sauce - it certainly has been my experience for 35 years of living here and ordering pizzas from many pizza places, both local and international franchise pizza places! : )
#17 What he meant was one man in one movie. Some countries have two people, male for male roles and female for female roles, we have only one. You can find male lectors in movies almost exclusively. You can find female ones in nature documentaries. We have a few such lectors in Poland. Mind this is almost exclusive for TV. We use subtitles and dubbing in cinemas (dubbing for movies for kids).
No one's really kissing woman's hand in Poland as a form of greeting. Maybe older generation, but if they do, they often do it the wrong way anyway, because unless the woman extends her hand in a certain way, a man shouldn't kiss it. Which plenty so called gentlemen ignore and just grab woman's hand when she only extends it for a shake, and place a really moist kiss on it.
Oh, yeah, also when kissing a womans hand you should bend down to it - and many people just drag it up to their lips, which you should not do.
Nowadays, kissing a hand is not a sign of good manners, but quite the opposite. When I hold out my hand to shake and someone twists it and wants to kiss me, it's definitely not right.
Older generation did this and some still do. For instance, my dad, sometimes. So it is not everyday, but on some more special occasions.
Also, it used to be almost as nuanced as a Japanese bow. The gentleman bows for a kiss while lifting lady's hand up, but the proportion of these two movements tells a lot. A deep bow with the hand lifted just a bit means respect for age and wisdom; lifting the hand up all the way and bowing just a little is a tribute to beauty.

Yes, smingus dyngus is real and at least at my grandmothers village practiced every year - to the terror of girls and women, as they are the ones that are aimed at the most by the mischievous boys and young men, waiting well prepared with buckets full of water.
Although I grew up in Germany because my parents fled Poland during the Cold War, we always celebrated until this day all of our beloved polish traditions. We still get up early during eastern to be the first to pour water on our loved ones and the days start with laughter and screams. Being polish is a state of mind ❤ love being polish

Malbork Castle houses "Krzyżakon" event (it's like a version of Comic Con, but focused more on history). The etymology of the word Polanie is related to the word: polana (clearing), it is an area within the forest, devoid of trees and covered with herbaceous vegetation. The glades were created as a result of human activity; either by cutting down the forest or by burning. The first clearings were created in river valleys as a result of the activities of settlers. Therefore, there were no open fields, only many different groups of settlers who, over time, created state structures.

Dubbing isn't made by one particular person in every movie. It's the voice of one man during one movie. In another movie it can be a different person. 😊
The dubbing thing is called lektor (voice-over) and basically it is one guy reading out the lines over what the character is saying (the actor can still be heard, but a bit muted, hence the english name - the lector's voice is heard ove that of the actor). So you get the acting from the actor and the meaning of what they're saying from the emotionless reading of the lector. If that's what you're used to you no longer pay the attention to the weird double voice thing going on, but it can be annoying if you know the language that is being read over.
There are movies that are dubbed. Shrek and Asterix and Obelix: Mission Cleopatra were dubbed and have gained notoriety for how well the dubbing was directed (and the translation by Bartosz Wierzbięta also played a part, including a lot of jokes that were a direct callback to Polish culture making them more accessible to Polish audience).
Honestly the choice is financial I guess - it is cheaper to pay just one guy. However for the most movies that go into the cinemas nowadays, the kids movies get dubbed and the movies for adult audiences will most likely have a choice of either dubbing or subtitles. For example looking at todays listing for Aquaman in Gdańsk they play it once with dubbing and thrice with subtitles. On the other hand a horror (The sacrifice game) has only subtitles here. I am guessing dubbing is done to appeal to kids so for those movies that can attract younger audiences who might not know English that well or read fast enough to enjoy the movie, and movies that are by definition for grownups go with subtitles. Lektor has become something that is mainly seen on TV.

#2 -nie is generally a structure we use to say "people of ". So "polanie" directly translates to "people of fields" while "słowianie" to "people of words".
#4 isn't entirely accurate. I recall there might have been one other European country to declare a constitution, but that one was even shorter lived than the one we had.
#9 Polish last names do not change based on marriage status as such, that part is incorrect. It's most likely a misinterpretation of wives taking their husband's last names or suffixing them to their maiden name with a hyphen - which is not uncommon but also not a hard rule.
#14: Weeell... it is considered heavily old-fashioned.
#15: They butchered the pronounciation: "Śmigus-dyngus". The tradition isn't really followed much. These days kids just use it as an excuse to fight with water guns.
#20: That pronounciation is again butchered. "Piwnica Świdnicka". Note the Polish pronounciation of "c" and "w" as well as the "Ś"
#22: "Noc Świętojańska" / "Noc Kupały", it's a pre-Christian thing that kinda survived. Not practiced much, either.

12:51 This one addition is 100% false. There has not been and there is no political debate in Poland concerning contraception techniques. There was (and is in place) the regulation that bans distribution of "the day after" pills, especially the practice of distributing them for free to minors, which some Western pedo-NGOs tried to introduce in Poland back in the day.
The abortion at will, as well as eugenic abortion, is also banned. The first one because of the constitution that protects human life "since the moment of conception," the other because these were Nazi-originated, racial-purity laws that were upheld by the communist regime.

13# is wrong. In Poland we serve pizza with regular tomato sauce. It;s just that we usually add some kind of dip in a separate container like garlic sauce, cream sauce, hot sauce or ketchup which you can add to your pizza yourself.
15# Regardless of gender we splash everyone we come across with water for good luck (and fun of course), however we do not use branches... maybe it was a tradition way in the older times, but now we use water guns, water bottles or fill baloons with water.
16# yes, name day is a thing, but not everyone vares about it these days. It depends if the tradition was still practised in your family or not, and no, it's never been more important than birthdays. Usually it's treated just as an additional occasion in a year for you to get smaller gifts (like chockolate or a cookie) and some attention, it's not a big thing. Oh and one more thing- althought one name can occur multiple times in a year's callendar we usually just pick date of the day that's the closest after one's birthday.

It's usually used in older movies or more serious ones dedicated to an older audience. On top od that we still do have an option of regular dubbing with a variety of different voice actors, wchich is more common for animations, movies for kids or just newer, most popular productions.

When I was a kid me and my mates from the neighbourhood planned for weeks for it. Which included stockpiling on waterbaloons, gathering into (usually) two teams, and securing a go-ahead from one of the parents to use their houses garden faucet (logistics is key!).
16# is a thing of age I guess - few decades ago when people cared more about getting old nameday was a bit more neutral, as it did not smack out say "You are older by a year now", so many people at some point moved from celebrating their birthday to celebrating their nameday. Kids were happy to get gifts on two days of the year rather than just one, although they would usually have birthday parties rather than nameday parties.

Another fun fact about Poland was I think it was after WW2 there was a man that use to make just basic zapiekanki in the steps of Poland leading to the train stations, they used to be around $3 I can't quite remember but honestly they were so basic but it was so delicious just made of mushroom and cheese with butter on the bread. I think the guy below saying they might have pizza confused with zapiekanki is probably right, we love tomato paste and herbs on our pizza wherever Poles are in the world, not just in Poland.
In the past, Russians drank something resembling vodka. This was done by freezing spoiled wine. The liquid that did not freeze was collected and thus they obtained strong alcohol. I still remember when this was a sign of affection for a girl to get her wet (by throwing water on her, pun intended) on this occasion, as well as regular "water battles" of boys between yards. But I think this tradition is in decay these days.

About this dubbing thing, it's more like voice over original voice. A person that does it is called "Lektor". And no, it's not what You think. It's not one person for ALL THE Movies. It's one "Lektor" per movie. Different movies can have different "Lektor" and there are female lektors as well. But the fact is, "Lektor" is the only polish speaking person You hear throughout the whole movie.
The pizza thing is actually not true; we do have regular tomato sauce. As for this particular dubbing style, it's called a voice-over. It may seem strange at first to hear a quite neutral, usually male voice, but if you get used to that, you can see that it creates some space and a link between understanding the meaning of the words and being able to hear the actual voices of actors/characters in a movie. This seems much more natural than an added voice, as in the case of dubbing. I would say these 22 facts were quite well spotted, but believe me, there is so much more to see and get to know about Poland. I love the traditions of Poland, Smingus Dingus is thousands of years old the Vietnamese I think took it from Poland, there's a few Vietnamese in Warsaw.
Poland is very patriotic but also too humble, a lot of the traditions done in Asia was inspired by Europe namely the Slavs (Poland). We just expected people to honour where they got the ideas from, but I guess Asian's aren't like that, Russia is Asia too so they just take without honouring where the idea of Vodka came from to begin with, until perhaps now.
We get the attitude from our Christian Jesus Christ faith, so it is very important to us to do good behind people's backs, because of attack from Russia and Polish people became sick from the poisons that were thrown at them they got angry happy, but they've healed you can see how well we've all bounced back, it really is the wild blueberries, the wild foods that naturally grow in Poland that God gave us.
The beautiful message of love and hope is in those berries, just like God's messages of love and hope for our babies.
This is also why it's important to have babies, because there's only 44 million Polish people in Poland and that is just too low compared to the rest of the world, not using condoms is like an honour to God and Christ to say thank you for the gift of birth and White beautiful Polish babies.

Another etymology of the world Poland is that Polacy (Poles) came from po-lachy. (descendants of Lachy) In antiquity Poland was Lachia and Poles are sill called "Lachy" by some nations in the East.
And in Hungarian Poland is "Lengyelország", which means: "State of the Lords of Angels" (Pole is "Lengyel" in Hungarian, meaning Lord of Angels, as "Lengyel" is a combination of the words "Lech" and "Angel").
Most of those are true but no one in Poland eats pizza without sauce and everyone can buy contraception in every store.
The misconception about the Russian origin of vodka in Western countries may be due to the popularity of vodka called Smirnoff . For me, the best Polish vodka is Belvedere .

The West Slavs are ethnic Lechs, [related to Czechs]. The Polanie tribe was one of many that migrated to the forests of Central Europe from the open grasslands of furthest Eastern Europe. There was an off shoot of Polanie that settled the banks of the Dnepr River at the site that later became Kiev of the Rus.
11 tribes formed a confederation with the Polans. They were known a Lechs who lived in Lechia. They are known as Lechs in many countries even today.
There were many attempts to bring the Western Slavic tribes into the ''fold'' and form a united front against Charlemagne and the Junkers. However, they preferred to fight independently.
Big Charlie was willing to form an alliance with the Polish Kingdom and stop expansion. But, he croaked too soon. The Junkers continued to cross the Elbe River into Slavia.
I am polish myself but unfortunately went to school in Germany. Thanks god my polish father taught me history he remembered everything by heart - bless him. When I read comments like that I always feel admiration for how much poles who grew up in Poland know about history and in general how well educated and well spoken they are. To keep up with poles born in Poland I have to study a lot as in Germany the educational system is a joke. It’s horrible to say at least. And then they think they are smarter and better than poles. I can only cringe when I compare an ordinary polish person’s knowledge to a German one’s.

Polanie is a name of ancient tribe. But Poland is inhabited by few other Lechitic tribes which united in one country to be stronger and be able to defend agains RomanGerman Empire under names of Polans. This part of history is still ignored by historians because Romans pursued their history and officially our history as a country started when king Mieszko I get baptised and subdued to Roman Catholic Church.
The Old Town in Warsaw, because of this unique reconstruction after the war destruction, was placed on the UNESCO List of World's Cultural Heritage Sites. Also the Malbork Castle is on this list. The castle was also destroyed in about 50% in 1945 and reconstructed after the war (there's a museum and various events are organised there also). Mushrooming is quite popular in Poland, because we have many really delicious traditional dishes made with mushrooms (for instance, soups, dumplings, they can be also added to meat dishes). In this video everything what was said about contraceptives is completely false. There was discussion, but about free access to abortion (which in some cases is still allowed, like when there's a health or life risk, or when pregnancy is a consequence of a rape).

How is mushroom picking fake? Maybe you live only in the city centre or something. Still many people do it. I lived next to a bus stop next to a big forest, in the autumn in the mornings you could see older ladies coming home with baskets full of mushrooms to sell, and on sunny Saturdays you'd meet many other families or couples with baskets or bags in the forest.
In Polish we say wódka what literally means "small water".

I have heard of men spanking woman as a way of getting the woman's attention or a way of showing they appreciation of them. I didn't know it was a Polish custom. My father told me about this so they somewhat practiced it when they came to the USA. I grew up in a community mostly composed off various Slav races of which Poland is one.
It is a tradition on Easter Monday, which is also called sometimes in Poland, because of this custom, a"Wet Monday" (Lany Poniedziałek). In the past I think it was boys pouring water on girls.
