  • Nev Marten and Richard Barrett welcome guest guitarist and Line 6 demo man Paul Hindmarsh into the Lounge to lift the bonnet on Line 6's svelte Helix LT multi-effects unit, A/Bing it with the original Helix Floor and delving deep into its vault of tones and jamming as a trio to explore tricks and techniques for getting the best from it on stage or in the studio...Also on test are Yamaha's Revstar RS720B, the new BB bass and A Series electro acoustics.

paulhindmarshmusic Hey Paul, does it make sense to have the option of splitting the stereo paths on the helix into 8 individual mono paths? As an 8 in/8 out interface, this ability would seem standard to me but I was surprised to find the Helix didn't sport this capability when I purchased it. Your feedback would be highly appreciated seeing how you are so closely associated with the device and seem like an active advocate for it.

paulhindmarshmusic Yeah, I second what Lockness asked. If the channel collapses into mono when the amp block is selected anyway, then why not just give users the option of separate mono channels. That way, if they don't decide to use stereo effects later, they won't have wasted an entire channel. It'd be great if we could get a response to this.

Finally someone playing some nice rounded tones instead of crushing metal only. I like harder sounds too but the clarity of sound and hearing the guitar is really nice.

A very helpful and interesting video, as a 71 year old guitarist and helix owner, it is taking me a while to get my head around things. This compared to other youtube demos I have watched is much more easy to digest and at a pace that is not intimidating too, especially for those who are not so technically minded like me. Thanks guys you have been a great help and saved me the headache of trying to understand the manual.

This has been the most pleasant and calming gear review I have ever watched. Paul is such a pro and unassuming guy that made the atmosphere that much better. Was not expecting this guy Richard who seemed very tame go into Gary Moore mode asking for a Soldano and just making that guitar melt, such beautiful phrasing . Top notch boys!

Honestly I think the only reason for any resistance from guitarists now is just fear of change and an obsession with vintage gear. For practicalities sake and gigging, especially in a city, or if you're doing functions I think the helix is an amazing bit of kit.

Great demo. I took the plunge and bought a Helix LT. it is incredible but I did worry about recording with it. What I found is that through studio headphones some of the higher gain sounds were very fizzy sounding, in my ears. When played back through studio monitors all of that goes away and it sounds ace.
I've only scratched the surface. Using it live is incredible, although to date I've only used it into the front end of my Blackstar Series one on the warm clean (plexi) channel and into a 2x12 vintage 30's.
Go into a store and try one out (nice and loud in a booth). Allow a long time!

This, I’m aware, is from a while back but it’s still one of the best quick demos on how to use a Helix I’ve seen. The humility of Marten and Richard is partly responsible for the ease with which Richard can go through his paces. It’s not that often I want the playing sections of a demo to be longer, but Richard’s two solos were lovely and I’d have been happy to hear them worked out further. One question that has come into focus a bit more in recent years is to do with having a cab behind you onstage. It would be good to see a sequel to this demo with an explanation of how a Powercab could (if appropriate) complete a live Helix setup. Still, great work guys, that continues to be great as time moves on.

I got my Helix quite a while ago and it just keeps getting better. I got it for live work (4 cable method) as I was sick of all the noise and tone suck I had to put up with using my pedal boards. The money I threw into those boards was way more than the Helix. The core effects sound so good. The Minotaur is an amazing boost. Anyway I now use it as my DAW and the amp mods are very good. Way better than the 11 Rack by Digidesign I was using before. I totally recommend it...plus it's built like my mother in law...tough!

Just curious. I'm mainly an at home recording type of player with regards to guitar. Trumpet player on the road. I hate the ever present noise associated with analog pedals when playing in my home studio. Is this a completely quiet user interface when attached to an amp and in use when your not playing?

  • @1madaxeman

What I always want to know is what amp/DI/PA/Power amp and Speakers we are hearing this demo through...I tried a Helix about a year ago in a store and whilst I did like it, I still could tell I was playing through a modeller, but I was playing it through some small 5 inch powered monitors.....maybe I'd have been more impressed with bigger real speakers and a bit more volume ? Watching good players demo stuff is always impressive, I'm sure those guys could impress us still playing through an old Pod 2.....cos their playing is mostly what catches our ears...the gear 2nd.

Hi there .. first of all is an occasion to make a hommage to Paul’s play .. what a great guitarist and cool person he is..
Than I’m recently a fortunate guy to upgrade from my old good Pod X3 which I never left since all the HD versions came out until the Helix .. than it was too much expensive in my opinion.. and at the first sight I felt in love with the LT.. I loved everything of ! I never have been charmed by the strips on the Helix and less the metal on it .. the Lt was just for me and a couple of days ago I became a happy Helix LT owner which arrived at the right moment to finish my concept album .. so here we are .. my single (dust of dreams) totally recorded with the Pod X3 and the rest of the album will be done with the Helix LT..
Please check out the single on my channel ..
The question is .. after heard of some saying that the LT is not that much good sounding as the Helix and the review on the video push that skepticism further .. is this right ?!
Thanks for anyone who could honestly answer ..

If you can plug a microphone and sing through the Helix while playing guitar, then I'm sold. It would be useful for songwriting.
    1. Can you do this through the basic Helix? and are there any good mic pre-amps for vocals?
    2. How does one use this as a soundcard for the computer?
    3. Can I play youtube backing tracks through this and jam along - like the yamaha thr10 amps?
    4. Are there two/three volume controls when using it with a computer, one for the computer and the other guitar, vocal etc?
    5. Does this do everything the THR10 does? I love the THR10 as I use it with my computer and to practice guitar playing.

This video is the most PAID for video by Yamaha I have ever seen. When was the last time you heard a musician say things like, "My Yamaha guitar, His Yamaha guitar and that lovely Yamaha Bass over there"? BTW, Yamaha owns Line 6. I can;t trust a review that came straight from the company itself.

Seeing a well known guitarist fumble with an unfamiliar guitar doesn't help at all.. nobody is viewing this video to see Yamaha guitars..

Let's be real about this what did we get a lot of talks and hardly any demonstrations we heard two good patches but no idea on how to achieve them what a waste of 44.30 mins of time what are we supposed to do!, this is BULLSHIT, ok rush out and buy one does anyone know how dear these are, these guys should tell us how they achieved those sounds, you can see how they press the buttons and every thing else but for fuck sake at least tell us step by step the moves required, disappointed, to say the least, anyone else with me on this, you don't have to say a lot you can say I'm with Terry or I don't agree with Terry, I am just trying to get something for us viewers these guys can play but hell they need some one to direct them, cheers everyone, Terry.

terry o'keefe hi mate. I know what you mean but there are loads of vids on you tube if you want more detail. I bought one, before seeing this video and the "instructions" are a nightmare. You have to get your hands dirty and just try stuff out. Totally worth it though.......amazing piece of kit.

my £130 podfarm from 2008 sounds alot better. to be honest the sound from the helix is so thin, and the harmonies sound like garbage. if I could buy a 2008 podfarm again i would (i had to get a new computer and i couldnt reinstall the one i hve cos i lost the cd) but i cant seem to find it anywhere. it seems impossible to get a decent tone these days from a usb audio interface.
