...and the Line 6 Helix Rack Effects Processor! - www.pmtonline....
A truly modern guitar effects processor with next generation, dual DSP processing and all the IO a gear addict could need. Browse presets and tweak effortlessly with the LCD display and smart controls. Hundreds of effects and amps, modeled down to the component level, whether it's distorting transistors, vibey photocells or funky wah inductors. All of Line 6's experience of recreating the classics and inventing whole new sounds has gone into HX engine.
The Line 6 Helix has all the power you need to create your dream rig with easy connections to your stompboxes, studio gear, live setups or computer. The Helix can sit as the hub of your guitar rig, with song writing inspiration and mid-song tweaks all possible via foot control and without reaching for your the board. Simply customise controls, name your scribble strips and play.
Every aspect of great amp design has been considered when creating the amp models for Helix, Real Tone whether you prefer gutsy blues tweed, sizzling British stacks or modern high gain. Line 6 stripped it all down and rebuilt from scratch for true, organic tone.
Smooth, Intuitive Interface
The Helix interface has gone through rigorous testing and optimisation, the lab coats at Line 6 have done all the hard work to ensure you have a system that's instantly familiar and intuitive. Fat stacks and huge tone without a massive learning curve.
In combination, the large 6.2 inch 800x480-pixel LCD display all but eliminates menu-diving and provides the same level of control you would expect from an external editor. Coloured LED rings and customisable scribble strips complete the user interface, letting you know what each footswitch is doing at a glance. When it comes to creating tones, Helix is as fast as you are.
Part of the goal in developing Helix was to allow guitarists to interact with technology in ways that are more intuitive, making the creation of tones easier. This means that - for the very first time - you won’t have to stop playing to tweak a knob. With Pedal Edit Mode, you can edit any parameter you like using your foot: simply select the block that you want to tweak, and its parameters spill out onto the footswitches. Select a parameter, and tweak the value using the expression pedal.
Giving you the ability to touch a footswitch and quickly tweak parameters or easily assign or learn controllers, Helix is the fastest tone creator of its kind on the planet. But that’s only part of the story - it’s also the most flexible. Helix has FOUR stereo paths per preset, allowing you to design complex routing scenarios for each patch. Creating variations on wet and dry routing schemes is as easy as loading a template or tweaking the joystick, and using the onboard effects models in conjunction with the 4 freely-assignable effects loops means that the tonal possibilities are truly huge.
The Nerve Center Of Your Entire Rig
As the most advanced guitar processor ever made, Helix can become the nerve center for your entire guitar rig. Easily integrate traditional effects pedals and other hardware into your environment, creating a seamless hybrid rig that incorporates the best of what software and hardware have to offer.
Helix has the most flexible audio routing ever seen on a guitar processor, thanks to its dynamically allocated DSP. Use the four effects loops to connect four separate pedal chains, or split them up and use them as freely-assignable inputs and outputs. In combination with four stereo paths, this means that you can process multiple instruments at once, send wet and dry signals to different places, and create large integrated systems that take advantage of both digital and analog I/O at the same time.
When you need to incorporate external devices via MIDI, Helix offers more flexibility than any multi-effect ever. In addition to powerful real time MIDI control, Helix can send up to six separate commands at patch recall that aren’t assigned to a footswitch, which means you can change a patch on a synth, start a sequencer, and turn up a fader on an external mixer, all with one press of a footswitch. Add three expression pedals, CV/Expression out, and external amp switching, and Helix can be the command centre for any size rig.

I think people look at the helix wrong. It is not going to emulate everything 100%. But you are going to get about 95% of the way there and at that point the audience can’t tell and you have to only lug around 1 piece of equipment and can completely change your pedals every song. That last 5% is made up with the convenience it offers.
HerroYuy246 of
i absolutely agree .
Why wouldn't it emulate everything 100% ?
@@cassius969 very good question.
@KC Fans to recognise the Zeppelin sound, so it has to be close enough.
This is exactly what I was wondering so many years ago when I got the previous L6 multi-effect pedal. This technology is really accurate.
Playing live, with a band, no one would ever know the difference.
100% true
joe jefferson That's because you're a nerd
well in that case just buy an old modeller for 50 bucks as no one in a loud crowded half drunk room is going to give 3 poops about what kind of modeller you are using and how accurate it is.
But its still how the tone feels in your hands...well..with personal experience...pedals feel more reactive and haptic to playing as compared to processors. But yet in today’s date either have there pros and cons.
Not on the ear, but in the soul? Close your ice and listen. But the comparision it must be do it with the big pedals, no mini pedals.
7 yrs later still the heart of my rig. My first one got stolen, and I literally couldn't function professionally until I replaced it!
Paul is such a great player.
You younger guys don't know about the Korg ToneWorks AX30 G or B. It does as much as this for way less money. It was way ahead of its time. Then it became the AX3000G, then went away. I still use my AX30B every day.
I tried it with my ocd and couldn't tell the difference, I freck'in love the helix, and I don't even use the modeling.
This video was 8:08 minuets long. Get it.😂😂
B R U H😂
I would say : Helix 'gets the job done' well. If this is primarily your job, you will want practical solutions. If you hold more of an artist's mindset in relation to this affair, you will still want the real deal, tubes and analog circuits. That is how the difference sounds to me.
On my headphones with iPhone 4 the individual pedal sounds had more bite as well as more air. They sounded way more exciting and musically involving than the emulations.
This is like the Turingtest for guitargeeks
The first three I could not hear a difference. But UA-cam compression can easily play a part there. I did notice a distinct difference with the vibe pedal.
Thanks for this video! Paul is such a great guitarist!
For the drive, the actual stompbox is slightly better, but for other pedals, helix sounds pretty darn fine.
I've tried this at home as soon as I got my Helix and this is depressing haw close/identical it sounds...
I’m sold
I think the only real noticeable difference was the univibe. Not that one sounded better than the other.
I do understand why people are switching to the Helix system. Very good.
we need just the amp side of the helix in its own box without all the pedals, but hey you can't make everyone happy
Why do most UA-camrs reviewing Helix play Strats? Finding a Les Paul-based Helix user ain't easy here.
The Dynocomp is the only one that sounds much better to me. The rest are negligible differences.
I bought the helix stomp as an integration for my pedalboard. I use well renowned pedals for delay and reverb and chorus, and the stomp is my Swiss Army knife of my pedalboard. Drives are good, and most of the effects are ok but let me tell you, phasers sucks compared to the real deal, I have the originals and I can tell you that I can hear a difference when I am playing. The difference in this video is not very audible but when I am playing them...it is. Also pitch effects on the helix are total crap, they really sound bad, not a single polyphonic one. I am not disappointed but I’m not blown away either. I kept the real pedals for the effects that characters my sound because I couldn’t get the same feeling. Disappointed that there is no small stone emulation and the script phase nor the deluxe phaser gets it. Most of the times legacy effects will work better. Amp emulation is top notch but I play with real amps if I can.
Pedals sounds better as for me...more high tone...but it could be just settings
ya the guitar playing should be different as well for those clean sound pedals
Someone said "multiefx sounds like crap"...Well you hv to see TwelveFootNinja or Rabea+Frogleap live with Helix man...😎🤘
what amp is the helix going through? thanks.
the models are close but not as organic as the original analog pedals. This just convinced me to stick with the real thing. Models sound better than they used too but digital still ...
Helix Vibe might as well not have been engaged.
stomp boxes always has a warm feel and after a few years those helix manuf will say this is the closest to real but they said it 5 or more less years
Greetigs!
Unfortunately, the subtext for this quite pleasant demo is buy a Helix!
Multi effects are better value, these days there is zero difference in sound between the two really, and you don't even need and expensive multi unit like the Helix to get the job done, a Digitech RP360xp will get the job done.
The only reason I'd get a stomp box is if it has an effect my multi unit can't replicate.
The real pedals sound better in every example. Thanks for verifying that for me. Modelers have a long long way to go still before sounding anywhere near as good as a hand-wired analog pedal or amp.
I just added up the price of all my pedals....$1300😬😜😂😭🙄
I’m never going to own 1/10 of the gear that is simulated by the helix. Why should I care if it responds EXACTLY like the original? As certain as I am that most of the analogue snobs are delusional about their ability to hear the difference, I don’t care if they can. I am pretty certain that there is at least some “feel” difference while playing, and I don’t care about that either. Even the helix is too expensive for me, let alone the amps it models. I just don’t understand why the tube nerds have to be so aggressive about attacking these things. It’s so sad and silly. Keep buying 1930s tech to play your guitar through. I won’t stop you. Sounds good to me. But the helix sounds damned good too, and anyone who says otherwise is just being a snot. There’s no need for it.
Well this vide is about comparing so i guess its ok that people debate the comparison. If you dont care, then why are you watching the video? .. Line 6 has been making modellers for many many years now and everytime they say that NOW its like the real thing, but personally i dont care i prefer my old digitech modellers. But i just wanted to check if this time they have gotten any closer... and seems like they are kinda close buuut i will wait a few years more :)
If they don't, these manufacturers would not explore this far.
I thought the real Univibe had more depth. But that may be merely a matter of settings.
I didn't know Shame McMahon played guitar lol.
I wish we could set up a blind test for all the analog snobs
This channel is bootleg andertons
Just kidding, you guys are awesome!
It is
Very nice. I can't tell a difference. I love my HELIX.
the helix have power amp built on it???
or its fx pedalboard?
ty
it's amp and effect processor and so much more
+Brock Davisson so you can connect it directly to a cabinet?
No XDX, you still have to have power amp for that or you can run the helix into PA speakers or FRFR speakers or studio monitors
ok tnx buddy
A true musician can make anything sound great.
Giuseppe Gagliardi you know what? True
Giuseppe Gagliardi a
Amen.
Giuseppe Gagliardi well I’m nit a good musician and I’ll get all the edge i can find
would love to hear Joe Pass through a Metal Zone
Anyone watching this video should just listen to it without seeing when they're switching effects back and forth. It's crazy...
Andrew Schiavo exactly! Listen with your ears not your eyes.
Awesome comparison. I tried it as well with my Ibanez SD-9 Sonic Distortion pedal vs. the Line 6 Hedgehog model and couldn't tell the difference either. I know a few people who bought the Helix, sold the pedals they no longer needed, and ended up with some extra cash in their pockets.
The guitar player wins!!
Wins what?
There are super subtle differences that we can hear because its isolated and recorded direct. However, in a live setting those subtle differences completely disappear. In the end to me what matters is the feel. If the responsiveness is off, it can easily throw off your playing. Looking forward to demoing one of these!
Of course if you're recording and you really isolate every single detail, it sounds different, I'm still a big fan of tube amps with an OD808 in front of it in my case, but I'm REALLY considering getting a Helix because it's freaking conveniant live instead of tapdancing on stage which I'm doing now, just the ability to create presets, and I can tell you right now, the people that'll hear the difference live I'm gonna be able to count on one hand. That's all.
You could always go with a Boss ES-5 or ES-8 to make those same presets just as easy with "real" pedals. That's the route I went.
So did you get it
Mickey Giesbers if at all 😂
@@kyle_brenn Well you could, but the Helix would work out cheaper - especially if you went with the LT.
@@sentientfootwear I have an LT... I primarily use it for acoustic. But for electric, I enjoy individual pedals through an amp more (or two amps for stereo). It's not necessarily about better/worse or cheaper/more expensive all the time. Pick the route that makes you want to pick up your guitar and play. For some people that's a Helix/Kemper/etc. For others it's individual pedals and amps.
So well well well....even Paul uses 3rd party IR's instead of the stock cabs....beyond that I love the Helix! stock cabs are meh but they sound mic'ed. The 3 Sigma cabs sound legendary. the tones!!!!
You can get good tones out the stock cabs if you set them up right
it sounds good but the analog gear still sounds more organic there's more dynamics done to the original tone
Challenge, watch videos with Paul in them, like andertons etc. and take a shot every time he says "you put me on the spot" "rising the expectations" or something similar
All of you claiming to tell the differences really should get off your high horse.
Rick Boyer No shit. It’s easy to find differences when you’re actively attempting to. If there are any differences, it’s so microscopic to merit a debate
Rick Boyer I can easily tell n prefer the originals . Models sound digital n not as warm or organic.
and I'm listening on a crappy phone speaker
Jeff Paul agreed. These kids are just mad they don't have the ears some of us have, they are trying to justify their purchase of this product, or are just looking for something to complain about.
Music With The Message Put the helix effects in pro tools, mix it, master it then tell me if it’s a helix or a modded tube screamer
There is absolutely no reason why Line 6 cannot get the exact same sound as any pedal.
So whether you guys are subjectively saying it sounds like it or not is besides the point.
For most people Line 6 can now do it.
Frightening huh.
It is all just two minutes tweaking.
If you have invested in any if these pedals they will never assuage your self serving contempt.
I think it depends on what your goals is... I was skeptical about the Helix Native. My 15yo son downloaded the trail and announced he was going to create an Andy Timmons cover video. Andy’s tone is difficult to reproduce... few hours, downloaded patch and first time recording a guitar. Sounds pretty good to me... certainly cheaper than a Mesa + petals 😳
Deliver Us - ua-cam.com/video/WlOdBiyuwTo/v-deo.html
Cork sniffers of the world, rejoice. ( great vid, btw.)
There is a difference, the bigest being between the micro vibe and the Helix. Realistically if they weren't played one after another would anyone notice? I doubt it.
We all know analog is better but this things gives you so much and sounds excellent. Without the a/b you'd have no reference to tell the difference and would be happy to have it
Wow, you just sold me on Helix products. I mean this is the main point isn't it? That it sounds and feels the same? Just awesome.
Nah there's clearly a bottom end lift on the tubescreamer, and the pedal sounds thinned out or lacking in the low end. I'm just a mix engineer passing through wanting to make an upgrade to my studio inventory, so I have no loyalties to either. That second analog pedal had a mid range forwardness and bite that the helix didn't. Overall, they are minor issues, but you can't hound a purist for wanting that extra 10%. Listen again on good studio speakers and let me know
Damn, can't tell a difference between the real things at all... obviously youtube compression plays a part, but if we can't tell here I seriously doubt your audience is going to be able to tell either. Once you figure the cost of just these 4 pedals, the Helix starts looking pretty cheap.
Listen on some high quality headphones. There IS a difference, but not necessarily in a way that hurts the Helix. The U-Vibe sounds very different, almost trashier on the pedals. It's much dirtier sounding. The Helix version is cleaner/more transparent.
I don't think anybody should get one of these things thinking it'll be 100% the same. You should get one because you like the sounds it does make, and not the sounds it doesn't make.
Not too hard to do with a clean effect. Throw some crunch into the mix, and the algorithms get way more complex and harder to re-create.
So true - if someone plays only clean, modeling amps and multi-effects simulators would seem to have much more appeal. Every modeling amp I've ever had from 1998 to 2018 had a few killer clean sounds that stand out in my memory. But the distortion tones just grate at you over time and eventually you wise up and STOP... :o
Useless comparison unless you use a recording played into both--especially because the playing technique changed when the pedals were switched.
Either way, though, there's no difference great enough that one is going to be superior in a mix in a way that isn't easily accounted for with compression, EQ, etc. Unless you're so bad you should be letting someone else be in charge of it.
he used the phaser with the vintage pedal mostly palm muting the sound so you couldn't really hear it all that well. Then as soon as he changes to the HELIX he stops palm muting and playing quietly so we can actually here it. Basically he intentionally played in a way to make the Vintage Phaser look bad. After seeing the whole video becomes a lie to sell a product.
I noticed that too.
I would have loved to see how some fuzz stacked up. Thats where it is really hard or simply impossible.
The univibe was quite obviously different - almost as though the effect was set lower on the Helix.
The Helix is definitely better than a built in effects processor on a combo solid state combo amp for sure, but it is not better than individual stomp boxes it seems. On none Phaser effects I could tell the Pedals had a more electrifying/fuller sound than the Helix. Now, perhaps the volume on the pedals was higher than on the Helix accounting for some of this or perhaps true analog high quality pedals simply can't be beat. I personally use a Marshall tube with Wampler Pedals and I am loving them!
My setup is a Marshall DLS 40C Tube, Jackson Soloist Pro sl2q, Wampler Velvet Fuzz, Wampler Thirty Something Overdrive, Wampler Ego Compressor, Boss GE7 EQ, Boss Noise Suppressor NS2. I was thinking about purchasing the Helix through ZZsounds, but After this video I will be ordering more Pedals instead. I am going to get the Wampler Ethereal Delay, Empress Red Witch Chorus, Wampler Buffer, and Boss Phase 90. Then all I need is a decent digital interface so I can record to my laptop. All in all it will cost more, especially if you include all the cables and power box for all of them, but the quality of what I am getting can't be beat.
Some individual stomp boxes are better than a multi effect and have an extra non standard funtion that makes them a lil special for a specific situation, but not everything is gold, there are troubles by inductance (patch cable) or a bad buffer (old wahs or some chorus like red witch 🤣), they're all tools not talent machines, a good quality pedal doesn't make you a better player (except autotune that fixes everything)
Both digital and analog have their own pros and cons. Depends on how you want to use it. Also depends on your budget. If you dont have a budget for each analog pedals/amps, go for the digital with a LOT of effects.
Winner was the pedals every time... But does that really matter? I don't think so... The helix is such a good deal for what you get. 80-90% as good as the real deal, for a fraction of what you'd spend for everything it models. How great is technology? It's only getting better.
If these multi fx units were that good, anyone would use them by now and there would have not been any pedals left ,right? If they were that good, why are there companies that still produce unique sounding pedals. These multi fx units ain't bad but if you have an ear towards what a good sound is,you will Definetely get bored very fast with these units.Single pedals have their own magic, they are made to do their job perfectly.Multi fx units I understand the technologies are advanced but these mode kings after original fx pedals haven't reached that magic land the pedals are already at.
Nice little vid.. the vibe was the only one I thought that wasn't quite cutting the mustard!
I think the level just needed turned up a little on the Helix and they would have been very close.
They sound pretty similar in character with slight gain / attack differences. if you wanted them 1:1 you could probably adjust the EQ to suite. the original univibe may have been slightly more organic to my ear. thought i could hear some nice tubular sounds coming from the low end, but it might have been the sweep at that particular moment. I own a helix and with some time you can coax some very usable tones out if it. I picked up the fremen settings pack for it and he has some great clean, crunch and lead settings already dialed in. better than the stock settings and easier to tweak to your liking.
That wasn't the MXR Micro Vibe .
Come On Guys, Its right on the Pedal.
That is the Voodoo Labs Micro Vibe.
The VOODOO LAB name is Right above the words Micro Vibe.
it is not an MXR univibe it looks like a voodoolab univibe pedal that you are comparing and its a low cost univibe that is really not considered in the same league with the higher end more accurate recreations of the univibe like a sweet sound, nuvibe, Novavibe, viberator or dry bell etc
The line 6 is awesome! Is it better than analog? Anyone with an ear will tell you the answer is no, but the point is not getting it 100%. It is about practicality.
Iam a pedals and valve amp chap. These digital emulation s are improving but they're not there yet. IMHO.
In this demonstration, I think they sounded exactly the same.
Agree with you, pedals still sound warmer.
damn I clicked on this swear the guy on the left was russell brand
Only thing I could spot was the fact that the tube screamer is fatter. Just alittle bit more meat when picking the thicker strings and hitting the base notes.
Couldn't tell the difference. I listened while I read all the comments sure to be saying one is better than the other;-)
The Helix is certainly an outstanding piece of equipment!! Nice guitar work as well!!
Pleasantly surprised! Great video :D
Whoevers says he can't hear any difference should adjust their ears!
I would but I can't figure out how to use the software. Maybe I should switch to a tube amp and pedals. These damn digital ears are way too complicated.
They sound functionally identical to me. As a gigging guitarist, this literally has it all. Scary to think where this is gonna be in 10 years. The vibe might be the only one I can really hear the difference on.
6 years on and they have only improved it since then. The oversampling update made a huge upgrade to the sound and feel. And now we have things like Tonex that sound almost 100% exact to what it profiled. Great time to be a guitarist honestly.
Geffen, Wake up. Your Dream Came True. Modelling Helix, Awesome
Hands up if you came here to read comments from those who claim they can spot the difference of each :D
0:32 " i never done this before"(well take in consideration that he is the vice president of the sound compartment FROM LINE6) yopu never done this before...seriously? 4 years of deep sound development and you guys never made detailed comparison with the most used pedals out there... COME ON MAN , well he corrects saying "on camera" well...ok
Sounds nothing like a tube screamer in front of a marshall tube amp.
Very nice! It's virtually the same. New tech has made leaps and bounds versus what we had in the 90s!
Nope… analog way better. This is basically like the Spark 40 in a pedal config. It’s not bad. And is cheaper than a bunch of pedals. Like to see it compared to the new UA pedals which sound amazing. Wait…. That really digital isn’t it?
Cools Video, this debate and comparisons will never end. I had a Vox Tone Lab LE and made the shift to pedals and a pedal board. If your fixed on your sounds, then great for what suits your needs. But for me, love tweaking individual pedals and even when not playing I just love the look of pedals on a board.
What we need is a company to take all effects most guitarist use in their analog form and combine them all into one unit. So it's essentially like a bunch of analog stomp boxes sandwiched together. This would be the ultimate processor.
SPARK 40
Come on, I can't believe guitar players don't notice the difference. The 808 and phase90 models sound a little bit harsh and lacking bottom end, and the univibe seems like having a dry/wet control thing, the effect level in relation to clean guitar is way low. I love modelers and I think they sound quite good, but come on I can clearly hear a difference.
Say "come on" all you like, the difference is so small as to be entirely subjective.
Line 6 now owns the guitar pedal world.
True! For the 808 you can hear the little bit of "bite" that makes the sound so great. When the guy plays the helix he seems to cover it by using more amp distortion with louder sound.
Excuse me, what language is the guitar player speaking?
What amp are you running through? I found that the Helix was almost identical to the pedals.
Helix sucks the tone a little bit more. I still prefer the real pedals.
Weirdly hear a huge difference in terms of compression and dynamics with the TubeScreamer, and Mxr Dyna. Prefer the pedals still in a band situation. I can understand the draw to the multi-fx.
Helix lose at the vibe
for once, a line six amp that doesnt sound like fried assholes.
They only sound almost the same, because an amp model was used. As soon as you hoow up the Helix or HX Effects to a real amp, the real pedals sound miles ahead better than the Helix models. Because the amp modelling makes the sound already sound digital, you don't notice the difference here.
There is no amp modelling on the line 6 HX FX.
I have a HF FX with a mooer preamp live and it just sounds killer.
My tonal possibilities are endless.
Why would you want to hook the HX to a " real amp" anyway. A powered FRFR speaker is much better still.
Amps and analogue pedals are truly dying.
I can hear a difference with the original Tube Screamer as it sounds better IMO. I couldn't hear any difference in the Dyna Comp, but the Phase 90 had a slightly better sound than the Helix. Finally, I couldn't hear any real difference in the Vibe sound. IMO the Helix is a very nice machine and when I find a good used one for sale I'm going to pick it up. For now I like the sounds that I get out my HD500X.
All real close but the Mxr vibe sounds way better. Was that what was modeled in the Helix? I figured it would go off the big chrome Dunlop Univibe. I'm ordering a Helix and have a Klon and the Univibe and will have to A/B them.
Can't tell in a video. Would have to compare live.
The rest of the pedals sound just like the Helix except the screamer which sounds more tight. The screamer on the helix sounds a tab, bit muddy....but I'm sure that can be fix with some editing. Other than that I'm impress and am very proud to have my own Helix.
Has anybody ever stop and thought that maybe the onboard effects just sound better with the unit itself, and maybe the unit just isn't as compatible with pedals as we'd like? Or is that outside of the realms of reality?
P.s. And I'm a helix owner.
Dude, I was hoping he would hand the guitar over to Russel Brand so he could bust some African Child riffs.
Haha my first thought to is that Russel brand
The Helix sounded pretty close but the pedals still had a bit more punch and character, I'm sure if you add an EQ after the Helix models you could get them to sound even closer. Still pretty close, the Helix models as they are were 95% close, after the EQ you could bring them up to 99% if not 100% The only one that wasn't as close in this demo was the vibe, it was much thinner on the Helix, but again, I'm sure if you add a bit of post processing you could make it far better. I will consider the Helix as a portable option for a live rig.
