How to use an Espar Bunk Heater | Trucking Answers

- My truck has an Espar Bunk heater and I show in this video how to use it. How to turn on the bunk heater, how to set the temperature and I show the exhaust pipe for it. The exhaust may produce smoke but that is normal depending on the outside temperature and how often you use it. These save fuel and are very quiet. It works like a furnace, maintaining a set temperature in the bunk. I have used them to about -4 degrees and they kept me warm. I think at a certain point you should run the truck but that is up to your company. You may hear a clicking sound, this is normal. The Espar bunk heater works like a gas furnace, it burns diesel and uses a heat exchanger. I really like them. If you keep the curtains open it will warm the entire cab of the truck.

My bunk heater lays next to me at home. She’s good for more than ten hours!
I NEVER THOUGHT TO PUSH THE BUTTON! THANKS MARK.... U ARE A LIFE SAVER
What about the air conditionner how to you put in on ? Or programme it?
Very informative stuff, thank you for your valuable info.
Does it work for a/c, or is it heater only ?
If you haven't turned your bunk heater on for a while, it may shut off the first time you turn it on. It may even shut off the second time you turn it on. Just keep turning it on, and eventually it'll kick in.
Thank you.
Help me about the smoke...I was worried about that.

you can fix the max run time by taking a paper clip put in the small hole it turns on maintenance mode
Use a small paperclip. That hole is tiny. I just tried with the clips I have and they are too big. I stripped the plastic from a twist tie and used it.
My new Kenworth came with this. I'm so glad it does, I can actually not idle at night and stay cozy.
Ps I use a drift mattress. Totally worth the 600 I got it for.
My heater only stays on for 5 minutes, this is a brand new truck.
I got 2022 cascadia it stays 5min and it's cold as hell 🤧
You have to reset it and set the voltage lower
@@Dnice1205 will that let work for the 10hrs in the sleeper
Mine too and it's a 2023 freightliner cascadia
@@cartersmg685 yes
I just light a fire in my trashcan... very festive for the holidays too, like my own television yule log
Caveman TV, I love it!
Apparently there's a lack of training out there. Who'd thunk....
What if the air conditioner running with heater on. How do I turn that off
I have a brand new 2021 international with Espar built in. I know how to use the heat but is there an AC option. I can’t seem to figure that one out.
Did you ever figure this out wondering the same
Well the one I have is only designed for heat. Terrible set up
Heat only
@@ricktaillefer1633 SAME HERE 😮
Have had issues with the bunk heater in the FLrs. Was wondering why it was getting hot in the summer. Found out the bunk heater was on. The power switch was off, and setting was all the way to the blue or cold setting but it was kicking out heat! Don’t know if anyone else has had a blast of hot air while driving but it really sucked. Maint found that a leaky water bottle in the cabinet dripped down the back wall and contacted something with the heater. It was awful. Anyone else have the phantom heater on without the power switch on???
I've always had good luck with freightliner bunk heaters. I think your issue was primarily caused by that water leaking.
The bunk heater is the only amenity that came with my truck. It's basically just a day cab with a bed. Lol.
I use it even if I am just sitting waiting for my trailer to be done.
What about the battery drain how do you combat that?
I'd rather run the a/c than a heater.
Thanks sir
Mine gets warm enough to bake cookies 🍪 😋
😂😂😂
Uses the same fuel as my x15 on high idle .... 0.4g / hr ....
I hope I'm as smart as Mike 1 day....
remember to shut the heater off in the sleeper a minute or 2 before turning the ignition switch on. It needs to shut down properly or the spark plug that starts the fire gets sooted up then the heater will NOT WORK!!
A mechanic always told me to run it at least once a month at the highest temp for 30 minutes to unsoot it.
You'll know it didn't work because it will do like mine did the SECOND time I used it in a brand new truck, instead of saying "heater enabled" it said "no flame detected".
Does the key need to be in the ignition?
Same question here
@@erickrenderos3405 no sir
Best explanation ever😊
Can you run it on just inverter power, without truck running or without a APU?
You should be able to my truck has a inverter and it heats up just fine
@@Erod-iz1nt Thank you for the insight, it's appreciated.
@@seanyoung8976 your welcome
@@seanyoung8976 my truck is a 2020 Freghtliner and it has optimized idle which turns the truck on after using the inverter so the battery doesn’t get low and die then turns the truck off after about an hour
I just bought a 2019 and tried it out. It works great but then it turns off after 5 min and says low voltage? Anybody experience that.
It will shut off if the battery voltage goes below the set voltage so it doesn't drain your batteries. There are other videos out there to show you how to change the settings. Make sure your batteries/charging systems are good 1st.
I just got in a new truck that has this Espar heater but the screen don’t turn on what do I do?
you have to turn your key all the way counterclockwise
How
Turn off your truck before it can turn on
@@borkan02thank you
Does it drain your battery? And is Webasto the same thing as Espar?
yes it does draw battery power and yes a webasto is similar
@@JASONHJEFFERSON thank you
The way they invented this they say it will only take a very little from the battery to start and that it’ll keep running off diesel thats why they recommend to run it only 10 hrs without having an impact on your batteries. Now if your batteries are old or in need to be changed then it might affect the voltage.
It uses VERY little power to sustain the flame inside the chamber and run the fan. Mine ran for 10 hours in a 2022 cascadia and opti idle didn't even come on until 7am.
My question is what do some of you do to re-humidify the truck? The Espar heater really dries out the air in they truck. So much it really screws up my sinuses. Dry skin, cracked lips, the whole deal. :-/
You can buy humidifiers that plug into 12V socket. Little tiny ones. Personally i stick a bowl of water in front of the vent.
Much easier than the set up on the Volvo..
Some have other brands. Volvo is in Swedish so hard to read the controls.
I thought the ignition needed to be turned to the left before starting the bunk heater.
Yes the key must be in the ignition in the on position.
No it does not. I have a 2022 cascadia and if you turn the ignition on it will disable the bunk heater, not enable it. If you have opti idle like I do, you have to have the bunk heater off, then turn the ignition to the on position, set opti idle to ON and interior comfort mode to "off" and then turn the bunk heater on. If you have it on and turn on the ignition it thinks you'll start the engine and it will turn the heater off.
@@jasonknox1268 That is not true.
Mine works in the off position. 2015 Cascadia
Good info to know..Thanks
Mine will turn the fan and heat on full blast out of nowhere even though I have both of them specifically set. Anyone now hot fix this?
Great video 👍🏽
It doesn’t give cold
Thank you sir🎉
Thanks
Another great video!
Thank u for uploading 🙏
how to keep bunk heater on for 10 hours?
Good stuff, as usual. Thanks Mark.
Love these bunk heaters. Keeps me toasty.
Mine was smoking so bad once i thought i was on 🔥 lol.
Another tip is when u shut off heater wait 5 minutes b4 starting engine. This prevents clogging off heater fuel feed line.
Oh? I just start the truck, it turns off the heater when you start it.
@@TruckingAnswers mechanic told me this when i had heater rebuilt.
Thank you ❤
Mine says, check fuel pump
Thanks a bunch
Thank you!

Very helpful ❤
Thanks mate
Does truck have to be running for this heater to work?
Key has to be in the off position
How do you do air conditioner?
Been tryna figure that out all day
I'm still trying to figure it out
@@kaddywilliams3984 there is no AC in the 2023 models, there's no apu, just a heater.
@@bigdaddyd9445 any ideas on how to keep ac running?
@@thechefsmokesexperience you can set the truck to acc power but only the fan will run. If your truck has idle auto shutdown, it should idle above 80⁰, what you can do is put a pregnancy heating pad, hot hands, or a laser on the outside ambient temperature meter, which on most trucks is a tiny antenna on the top of the roof. That will keep your truck running all night. But other than that there really is no way because the ac compressor is driven by the engine itself when the truck has no auxiliary power unit.
Mine don’t even throw hot air but its working anyone have this issue and how you fixed it thanks in advance
Takes a few minutes to heat up. If it doesn't light it should shut itself down. Might need serviced.
@@withbothfeet8593 yea ive tried countless times and its too cold to try at the moment because all it throws is cold air im going to wait for the warmer weather to take a look at it.

Anyone know what it maybe when bunk ac blowing hot air?
Cool my heaters make me hot 🥵🥵🥵💦🥵🥵🥵💦💦🚛🚛
You use more emojis than a 13 year old girl.
you mean to tell me there's people out here driving these trucks that don't know how to use the bunk heater? we're surrounded by idiots. if you can't figure that out please stay out of the driver seat
obviously you have not used an esbar heater.
only five to six nights a week for the last 3 years but what do I know it's not that damn hard
There are people who don't know how to use it.
well it's definitely not brain surgery rocket science that's all I'm saying
I'm not here because I don't know how to use it. I'm here because when I turn mine on, the 10:00 is only 10 minutes. Trust me it is. I'm trying to figure out how to change it because I go to sleep warm and 45 minutes later waking up to 19° truck interior and it sucks.
Noooooooo!!!!! The heater, 2:47 TEMP BAR, is always blowing Hot Air... No matter What You do with the Crappie Espar??? It won't Shut Off!!!
