    • @Dan-vz7xu

      After Scots and Frisian, Norwegian is the closet language to English. It would take a native speaker of English probably 6 months to learn the language at a conversational level if forced to speak it. Since Norwegian is so close to English , and English is the default international language, most Norwegians are fluent in English and would just speak English to a foreigner. Norwegians and Swedes speak the best English of anyone not Native to English speaking countries, from my experience, because of the similarity to English and their education system.

    Dating in Norway goes like this (Typical Norwegian life cycle):
    1 One night Stand
    2 Dinner (Pay for your slef bror)
    3 Getting to know each other
    4 Maybe move together (while everyone pay for them selves)
    5 Have 1 and a half kid
    6 Seperate or get married (make sure you do not invade the space of one another)
    7 Divorce = Anxiety
    8 Sick-leave/Retirement
    9 Move to Spain/Greece (more like sunny place)

    interesting video ! One of my best friends is norwegian and we both grew up in seoul and America but she explained to me that dating culture is different in Norway. I am a bit surprised the people here did not explain more how you hook up a few times and then a relationship can develop from there. To me that’s the only part of Norway i am uncomfortable with, only because i am extremely shy and i couldn’t give that to my partner unless i was 💯 comfortable with them and i have to know them very well first of all. I’m also just hesistant bc I come from two cultures where STD’s are feared and honestly, I would not like that 😂The bit about American media was funny. American dating in itself makes no sense. Both Korean and American dating culture is 💯 different from Norway. I’m not trying to criticize any country, just sharing my thoughts :) i wonder how you managed to talk to people on the streets in norway, how scary! 😉😂

    • @chezy8148

      I think regardless of culture and place, you should never feel forced to do something you're not comfortable with. I'm sure that the right person would respect your boundaries even if he/she wasn't used to them 😊

    • @nattifrutti
      @nattifrutti 3 роки тому +20

      I'm Norwegian, and I also don't like do do anything like a hookup unless I'm 100% comfortable with the person. You just have to be upfront with that, and people will respect you :) if they don't, then they're not someone you'd want to spend your time with.
      It's very chill when you date, it's kinda like going out for coffee with a friend, and you just get to know each other like you're 2 friends, and then later on, if you want to see each other again, you can do something more date-like(but very chill! Not a restaurant). You just have to clarify that you are looking for a relationship, that you want to get to know a person, and that you aren't comfortable with sex early on like other people may be comfortable with. I'm like that, and people respect that. You don't have to go that route that includes such things. One just have to specify that so that others will understand. And then it will be easier for you. And you'll just have to find a person that wants the same. You don't have to do anything that you're not comfortable with doing just because others go that route :)

I’m shy, I don’t approach people, even when they look my way. My friends tell me dating apps are just for quicker relationships (not my thing), and I don’t drink which my friends told me is the (only) way Norwegian guys will talk to you outside of apps. Also, although I have many friends in Norway, they seem to have 0 single guy friends, and so there’s that. "Jeg har veldig lite peiling". Sounds like the German "Ich habe keine Peilung" or "etwas (nicht) peilen", which more or less means "I don't know what's happening right now". It originates from piloting ships into harbours. When the pilot had no landmarks to orientate himself, he had "keine Peilung", ie couldn't find the direction where he should go.
    Seems fitting since the Hanseatic League played a big part in Norway's history as well, and both languages (Norwegian and German) seem to have influenced each other to a great extend because of that.
    EDIT: 10:28 I find it interesting that she says "tyveårene" and not "tjueårene". So... that means I won't stick out as a weirdo if I say "tyv" instead of "tjue"? I just find it way easier to pronounce "tyv" than "tjue", heh.

      Very interesting to hear where our «har ikke peiling» expression comes from! Tyve/tjue can be interchanged without any issues, but I’d say tjue is more common, although it has the downside of being potentially misunderstood as sju

      Yes, that's my main concern. I still have a hard time pronouncing "sju" and "tjue" distinct from each other (right now I tend to put stress on the "e" to make it more clear), so I wondered if I should just say "tyv". Which also would have the added benefit of being able to say "en og tyve", just like I would in German, instead of "tjueen", lol.

The smartest people I've ever known have been Scandinavians or had ancestors from those parts of the world. for most of history those people didn't have time to mess around and be slothful because winter was always a looming threat closing in, the smart and efficient were favored. Neat.

I have a book with CD but it's much better to watch people talking about their opinions on different matters like in the videos :) One question: I've noticed many times a sentence ending with the word "da" and there's no translation to that word (I think, but maybe I've missed something). Could anyone explain to me what does it mean/when is it used? For example at 2'19'', 2'25'', 2'28'', 13' 05'' and 13' 16''. Thanks a lot in advance! :D

    • @Amazingpotato157
      @Amazingpotato157 3 роки тому +5

      It doesn't really mean anything. Swedes do this aswell. It's sort of a filler word and you will notice that some people use it a lot while others don't use it as much. Here it is used as a way of saying "because" or "since". Basically if the pattern in English is "this is .... , so ...." you could express it in Norwegian as "dette er ... *da*, så ...". The sentence before the "da" usually explains the sentence that follows if that makes sense but it isn't always the case because we use it very arbitrarily. I recommend that you don't learn it now at all, because if you learn Norwegian you're eventually gonna start saying it naturally because of how others speak anyway.
