There Is Plenty to Like About the 2020 Mazda CX-30 | MotorWeek Road Test

- “Why in the world would they need that?” may be your first question when you hear that Mazda would be adding another small crossover into their lineup, the CX-30. And “why would they mess up a seemingly logical naming pattern of CX-3’s, 5’s, and 9’s?” may be your next one. Well those are some great questions; let’s see if we can provide some great answers.

John Davis may look older, but his voice is still the same as it has always been over the last 4 decades; amazing!
Yes John is still a great host and narrator for the road and comparison tests whether it’s a MX5 or this
That's funny you mention this, I just said basically the same thing on the Nissan Sentra video. John Davis is my favorite of all time. I love watching the old shows to this day, my favorite being the AMC Eagle and AMC Concord.
Go back and watch the first year of MotorWeek. JD was more "subdued" then.
So glad John Davis is still doing reviews!
It should be obvious that the CX-3 was to small for the USA market. The CX-30 is what the CX-3 should have been. And I wish they would have bought the CX-4 to the USA. Overall Mazda makes very good cars and deserves more sales. I currently own a 2019 CX-5 Signature and it's a great car.
Totally share your excellent views (as well as share the same 2019 CX-5 Signature trim).
Just traded in our CX5 and got the 2020 cx30, LOVING IT! Mazda does no wrong!! my 6th mazda since 2001!
@@Slavic_Boer ok and….
You gotta love how Mazda does things.
98 ft from 60 to 0, that's impressive!
This is a smart man. Look at the size of that brain.
In all seriousness, 30+ years ago he created a show that continues being pretty damn good. Respect from Malaysia
Except that he missed the fact that the CX-3 is based on the Mazda 2, not 3 so there is only one CX based on the Mazda 3, and that is the CX-30.
Wow 60-0 in 98 feet is impressive!
Mazda should just rename the CX-3 to CX-1, so that the CX-30 could take the spot.
0:40 just for clarity, the CX-30 is based on the 4th gen Mazda3 platform; the CX-5 is based on the 3rd gen 3.
Cx-9 is on the old platform. Ddnt know cx-5 was also.
Mazda does no wrong!! Mazda rocks!!
Being 6'1, the CX-3 made me feel very claustrophobic. Felt fine in the CX-30, glad they replaced the CX-3 with this.
I was about to say "yawn," until I saw the price. There really is a lot to like.
No yawns when you drive it. Surprisingly quick and nimble.
@@jamesmac8424 Good to know Jim
A friend of mine has had one of these as his daily driver for the past year, and for the most part, I quite like it. The performance is pretty good, the ride is comfortable, the stereo sound excellent, it's fairly spacious, the interior is pretty nice... my only complaint is that the cloth seats definitely wear on you after long trips. We took a drive from Bergen County to Rehoboth Beach this past weekend, and I can definitely say that my legs felt very odd after 3+ hours on the road upon exiting the car.
Nicelooking little SUV. Toyota needs to get into this market.
John Davis still rocks!!👍
Seen it in person and saw the owner use the turn signal on it and the light signal is an interesting one. It's apparently separate from headlights. Something I haven't seen since the late 80s.
Looks nice in person huh? I saw it in black or dark grey in person. Looks soo nice. Saw a 3 in magazines and liked it till i saw it in person tho. Kinda strange
Looking forward to the 40th anniversary season this fall.
Will the rear hold a set of golf clubs?
Good topics from MotorWeek. Thais may buy the different car from American but the topics about this car is same.
In Thailand, CX-3 sales are bad because CX-3 is small and expensive. That why CX-30 must come.
But people are confused that why the name is not CX-4.
2:16 nice
These look great but the Mazda SUVs all look too similar to each other (aside from the obvious size) for me to buy one. Except maybe the CX3
Just curious, which name brands don't look similar?
Why should they look significantly different from each other? When you want a Mazda (want the qualities that Mazda models share), you simply choose which size you want. They all share consistent traits, just as with Audi models. The only Mazda that doesn't really make sense is the CX3, being too small for comfort and utility for most people.
They should name this segment mid compact
This actually looks exactly like the jaguar f pace
hahaha I agree.
Yes, but reliable
John Davis usually does his homework but missed that Mazda could not call the CX 30 the CX 4 because there is already a CX 4 derivative in China and you cannot have two different vehicles with the same name... Sharpen your pencil John
Adding a "0" probably essentially means a "4-Door SUC (Sport Utility Coupe)". If they were to make a CX-5 SUC, it would most likely be called the CX-50.
John Davis starting to look like Emperor Palpatine
It’s pointless to me when u have the CX3
I agree
CX-3 sales never really took off in the Unites States; it has always been a slow seller since Mazda began marketing it almost 5 years ago. A shame as the CX-3 is a very nice small crossover utility vehicle. I can say this because I owned one, a 2017 Grand Touring, for almost three years. Really enjoyed driving it and, as my very first Mazda, it won me over to the brand. I traded it in on a new CX-5 Signature trim last year. It was just a bit too small (in several respects) as my requirements changed. Actually size in several areas was and is the main reason many buyers decided against the CX-3. Anyone needing decent cargo area in back of the CX-3 will likely be disappointed, unless you can drive with the rear seats down. Looks as if Mazda is planning to phase the CX-3 out of the North America market in any case since for 2020, it is offered in one trim level only. Again, a shame if it is pulled totally since it is a fun-to-drive zippy car with outstanding handling.
@@ctranger every YT reviewer I've seen really like the cx-5 driving and handling feel way over everything in its class. I think it was Sofian who said it's even better than the cx-3. Hope u enjoy and let us know how it goes 🙂 🍀
Probably going to phase out the cx-3
John davis the biggest industry spokesman
What is the color of this test model?
machine grey!
John Davis is my favorite of all time. I love watching the old shows to this day, my favorite being the AMC Eagle and AMC Concord. I like Mazda and now that they are working with Toyota, even better. I like Ford trucks but there cars except for the Mustang and old panthers, are total junk. Glad Mazda and Ford broke up with Ford selling they're 11% stake. Mazda reliability (most important thing to me) is improving drastically.
Gooo Mazda #1
You'll see me in a white one in Owings Mills, just wave hello
The naming makes no sense now. In Australia we have CX3, CX30, CX5, CX8 and CX9.
I think China has CX4 and CX6.
CX7 used to exist at least here in North America but was discontinued. Wouldn't be surprised if they brought it back in the near future though.
Does this guy talk to his wife in that tone of voice?
As usual, Motorweek finds much to love in virtually every vehicle they review. And truth to be told the CX-30 is an appealing subcompact crossover, especially compared to the CX-3, a model that almost certainly will shortly disappear from the the US. Unfortunately, that appeal is seriously undermined when the CX-30 is compared to the new KIA Seltos, a crossover that's a couple of inches shorter than the CX-30 with much, much more interior space and a quicker turbo powerplant.
Stephen Hendricks except it’s still a KIA.
@@scottcalhoun5524 Do you have to put on sunglasses when you come out from under that rock where you've been for the last decade or so?
Stephen Hendricks I drove the Seltos and the CX30, Mazda is much nicer, and again...not a KIA!
@@scottcalhoun5524 In the first quarter of 2020 CX-30 sold 8592 units in the US. The Seltos sold none since it was not yet available in showrooms. In the second quarter Mazda sold 8364 CX-30s. During that same second quarter KIA sold 14,072 Seltos SUVs. The reasons the Seltos is such a hot seller compared to the CX-30 aren't hard to find.
Peak HP for the CX-30 is 186 @ 6000 RPM. Peak torque is 186 ft lbs @ 4000 RPM. The 1.6L Turbo Seltos delivers 175 HP @ 6000 RPM and 195 ft lbs of torque @1500 RPM! In other words, the HP and torque figures are roughly equal but the Seltos delivers its torque, the key to performance, at a MUCH lower and more usable RPM.
Total cargo space in the CX-30 is 45.2 cubic ft. In the Seltos the cargo space amounts to 62.8 cf. In other words, the Seltos provides 39% more cargo space than the CX-30. And to add insult to injury, the Seltos is an inch shorter than the CX-30.
Finally, Mazda provides a 3 yr/36K bumper-to-bumper warranty and a 5yr/60K powertrain warranty. The Seltos comes with a 5 yr/60K B2B warranty and a 10 yr/100K drive train warranty.
You may feel the CX30 is "much nicer" than the Seltos but actual customers apparently don't agree.

Cannibalizing sales from cx3 and cx5
Yeah, maybe. But look at all the suv's BMW and Benz have 😆
Cx5 is their best selling car, it just fills a void in the market, pretty smart actually
Cx3 sells bad in the USA. CX -5 has its own market for people who want something bigger. Cx-30 essentially replaces the Cx-3.
Or you could look at it like this
Hatchback - CX3
Subcompact - CX30
Compact - CX 5
Midsze - CX 9
