      We now own the 2020 fiberglass Runaway RangeRunner - there are several videos about them I have made on this channel. Soon I will be launching a multi-episode Ford Transit van conversion series. I just bought a 2018 medium roof Transit and I am still in the planning stages, but the build should be going strong in September. We will use it to tow our Runaway which will serve s a very comfy full-time bedroom. The Transit will have a small kitchen, small bathroom with shower, two long sofas with tables that can turn into an extra bed for guests or grandkids. Very excited about it.

    Excellent video! VERY well done! This answered my number one question about the Runaway campers. I am sure this has probably answered many potential buyers concerns comparing these two models. Although the extra room is nice with the 6x8, the 4x8 is far better suited for my mini SUV. Thank you all SO much for making and sharing this video!

    Picked my XL up in Summerfield in early March. I'm loving it! Live in Albuquerque and drive a red 2016 Impala. Had U-Haul install the hitch on Big Red (the Impala) and they did a great job. With 18" from ground to top of the hitch ball it tows level and if I'm on a level site and don't need to go anywhere on a one night stop I don't bother to unhitch. Selected the XL as the Impala has a measly 1,000 lb towing limit. I'm single and travel alone, so the smaller size is not a problem. I grew up on tent and pop-up camping and loved it so this works great for me. From Summerfield I went up into North Carolina and on to McKinney TX to my older daughter's. Then spent 3 days at Lake Eufaula OK with them and their Jayco (they're glamping, not camping). In May it was Colorado for my first grandson's high school graduation (younger daughter's son) then in June to Michigan. Will be going back to Michigan in August. This little "bed-in-a-box" is everything I wanted and expected. It tows beautifully even in a strong cross wind and has seen weather from clear to rain, snow, and hail. The 305 hp V6 in Big Red hardly notices the weight but there is at least a 4-6 mpg mileage penalty but I expected that. I love road trips and for the price it will definitely pay for itself in savings on hotel rooms. This is camping, not glamping and I wouldn't trade the Runaway for the world. I've had a lot of people approach me from other campers to truck drivers (men and women) and I don't mind at all showing it off and putting in a good word for Runaway Campers and the Shives family. This is too long now, so from Big Red and the Runaway, happy camping!

      You mentioned snow...was that jist driving through or did you stop and sleep in it while it was cold and snowing outside??? Cause I am curious about how the temps inside hold up to the colder climate and snow. And also, if you did sleep in the snowy cold climate, what did you use for heat to stay warm aside from thick warm blankets???

    • @brianmcdaid3178
      @brianmcdaid3178 5 років тому +4

      @@Magny80 Funniest part of the return trip from Florida. First night with the Runaway it was rainy and down to 34 degrees. All I had was a warm sleeping bag and was comfortable. Next day I picked up a small electric space heater. That night it was about the same temp and I only had to have the setting at 4 (9 being the highest) to maintain 72 degrees inside the camper. Very comfortable. The snow was drive through in the Tennessee Cumberland mountains. Not enough to stick on the road. If you have a Runaway with the air conditioner, I highly recommend getting a thin piece of plywood or masonite the outside dimension of the front of the air conditioner to protect against hail or other fling objects.

    • @Magny80
      @Magny80 5 років тому

      @@brianmcdaid3178, oh believe me, I would build a protector box around it for sure. I know there is a canvas/vinyl type cover for it, but that breaks down over time. Very helpful. I drive an EcoSport, which is smaller even than the Escape. The biggest selling point you made for the 4x8, was the ability to lift the tongue and move the trailer. Since it will be only myself in the camper, the smaller size is fine.

If your tow vehicle is a small or narrow vehicle then the 4x8 would be best unless you don't mind your camper sticking out from the sides. If you have a large (wider) vehicle then the 6x8 will suit fine, keeping in mind you still have to add tire width. Peace.

There are lots of other choices out there and some are pretty good, but often when you add up everything what seemed to be cheaper than Runaway is not. I also am not a fan of other companies who bad mouth their competitors, instead of just selling their own. That really rubs me the wrong way and is very unprofessional. I am headed to Runaway in a few days to do some filming . . .

      OK thanks for getting back to me Charles. I have been to the Runaway location. I live in Florida. My only thing is I would like to have a separate Galley. With the 10 foot Escapade Trailer I can have that and still have lots of room for sleeping and storing. I certainly have not ruled out Runaway since they are a local in-state business for me. Like the Runaway owners my wife and I are Christians so we are trying to make the runaway trailer work for us. When and for how long will you be at Runaway’s headquarters? Are you open to my wife and I meeting you there. We are living in Wimauma, FL.

      @Larry T Bowman I looked at the Escapade and they look great and similar to the Runaway Venturist. Have you looked at that Runaway model? Their off-road Venturist is highly customizable and Justin Shives will work with you on options of all kinds. I do not think the standard Runaway and the Escapade are comparable - it's apples and oranges.
      I really think Justin can meet your needs with a Venturist model. I have seen a RangeRunner with a galley like I saw on the Escapade. That website only shows one model. Call Justin - he is great to work with and is crazy passionate about their off-road Venturist model.

      Carol Erikson We actually took our cubbies out, and made our own custom shelves that work a lot better. The cubbies are well-made but to me they are a lot of wasted space. I don't know what the law is for requiring tow mirrors, but if you're in a vehicle that's less than 6 feet wide, it's pretty hard for the driver to see around the 6x8. Also, if you buy the off-road Venturist, the 6x8 may not match your width, and could get squirrelly on you if you're on a road with ruts. If you can, or you care, you might try to find a trailer that matches your tow vehicle's width, so it tracks better on rutted roads.
    To me, the 6x8's a no-brainer. I'm not planning on super-extreme off-roading. I just want it to stand up to rough roads and occasional off-roading. Getting the Timbren suspension is as much about dragging the thing for miles on rough dirt, gravel and washboard. Almost all the getaway locations entail miles of rough roads that they're not getting any better at maintaining, lately and for the foreseeable future.
    As always with off-road or terrible road (Have you explored Colorado, lately?), the idea is never to get yourself in a bad situation. Cowardice beats stuckedness.

    You did a great job on the comparisons and I love all of the various camera angles. I stopped the video to look at the under body construction. It looks like the larger trailer just has painted plywood and the smaller trailer was a metal surface. Can you speak to this at all? What is the total weight of each (when you had all of your stuff in there and empty)?

    • @charlesmoman
      @charlesmoman  6 років тому

      Lynn Lary the 4x8 is about 650 pounds and the 6x8 is around 900 pounds empty. Both units have the same plywood underneath and both are covered in very heavy plastic. Look at my Runaway factory video to see the building process.

    • @charlesmoman
      @charlesmoman  6 років тому

      No worries about water. Folks from all over with a lot of rain have no issues. We are doing a long Alaska trip in 2019, and I am having the underside of my camper treated with Line-X spray just to be totally sealed. It is not necessary, but I tend to overdo on some things! Some have had their entire Runaway camper covered in Line X - I know that some do that with their off-road Runaway too.

Also I am from Buffalo NY. Any dealers out there near by. Good video thanks. This could be just what I am looking for.

They are starting to add dealers - check this current list on their website - www.runawaycampers.com/dealers. On the web site you can find out all of the details about these great little campers. Does the 6x8 come with the sideways bed like that?

    • @charlesmoman
      @charlesmoman  5 років тому

      No. Runway offers a foldable mattress, but most buy something after they purchase the camper. A queen size can fit in the 6x8, but it takes up most of the space, Many get a foam mattress of some brand or another and then cut it down to the size they want. It is just a matter of personal preference and how much "free space" you want to have in there. But most of us bought a Runaway to get off the ground, so we use it to sleep and lounge in - it obviously is not typical; camper that is a tiny house on wheels.
