My grandparents were active members of the resistance so as a Dutchman I'm very proud of the Dutch Resistance during WW2
Such loss of decent, brave people, Jan and Hannie. The Dutch underground had courage and determination. Yes, tears shed for Jan and for Hannie. Thank you World History & to your narrator too.
they were not decent people, they were stalinist communists and killers; they murdered always from behind -they did nothing for the Duch people
My grandfather was part of the Dutch reistance. He never spoke of it and i have only learned of this more recently, after his death. What was done, is just unbelievable.
“There were many tears shed”…indeed tears were shed as I watched this video today.
Almost all of these bring out the same emotions… this stuff hits hard.
I really enjoy the videos of those who fought back against the Nazis.
The Dutch Resistance did SO much to fight back against the Nazis. They were so bold and brave and innovative.
En een hele hoop land verraders
God Bless the Dutch!
@@IcerinAlaska49Today, they are all docile sheeps
And so few…
as a matter of fact most Dutch did very little, mostly because of repraisals against families of resistance members...
and there also were a lot of collaborators in our country.
in fact we should be very ashamed for in our country the percentage of Jewish, Roma and Sinti people murdered by the nazi's is the highest of all occupied countries! the Danes and Norwegians rescued the stark majority of their Jewish citizens, they are the real heroïc people in dealing with the nazi occupiers.
So very touching!
Thank you for sharing the stories about Jan Bonekamp and Hannie Schaft.
I read a book about Ms. Schaft. It was inspirational but also very sad. She was "discovered " while imprisoned. As had dyed her hair, in prison it starred to grow out. One of the guards noticed this and alerted the Gestapo. That is when she was brutally interrogated and then shot.
I wished that those brutal german nazi's were caught and punished. Very few ever were...and lived full and "normal" lives after the war.
RIP Jan and Hannie and so many others who fought against the Nazi tyranny and brutality.
These films are so Heartbreaking, but so Very Important! We Must Never Forget!!🥀🥀🥀🥀🙏🙏🙏🙏🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️
Then Don't vote Republican if you want to keep fascists out of power.
It took an Incredible amount of Strength, and Courage to not only try to Survive each day, but Unimaginable Courage, and Will to Live to Resist!! Rest In Peace to All of the Innocent Victims Survivors and Those that Fought for Them! Amazing Resilience, and Heroes!🥀🥀🥀🥀🙏🙏🙏🙏💔💔💔💔🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️
I am amazed how the Dutch ever forgave Germany. Let alone join them in the European Union later. The extent of war crimes is unforgivable.....
The Dutch forgave the Brits, Germans, spanish French, etc. I'm not sure why they shouldn't forgive the Germans.
They declared war on Germany on May 10th 1940. They asked for it!
@@Occident. Of course, after being invaded, they declared war
The initial premise of the EU was to integrate European economies to such an extent that it would be impossible for them to ever fight each other again. Only the far right (those who historically start wars) don’t understand this . . .
@@Occident. You are wrong, also, communism is good.
The Horrific, and Beyond Devastating Suffering is Incomprehensible!! My heart aches for Them! Prayers the Survivors were able to find Peace.🙏🙏🙏🙏🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️
I've read several books about the brave Dutch resistance. I'm going to Amsterdam in May and have planned to visit the " Verzets Museum"
The Dutch Resistance Fighters were fierce. In all actuality, all resistance fighters were. But these Dutch fought hard for their country. I’ll never understand how people could hate anyone they deem inferior.
The Resistance Fighters were Very Courageous Heroes!
Nope. Most were communists. Commiting crimes to justify their own agenda
The first time I went to Amsterdam I found a small hotel not far from Central Station. I asked about getting a room for three days. I offered to pay upfront in American dollars. The man checking me in started smiling. "That's why we love Americans here in Amsterdam. You take care of business first". I then found out that American and Canadian paratroopers had landed on warehouse roofs and the dock area to liberate the city. It was heavy fighting for every yard. I saw monuments on the Dam in remembrance of the groups in the Resistance. I came across some graffiti in Germany on that trip. "Gib Nazis Keine Chance". "Give Nazis No Opportunity".
If you have an opportunity, look up the history of Margraten cemetery.
The nazis were monsters. They're so bad they've got me rooting for communists in most of the ww2 stories, and I'm not communist.
Stalin killed 20 million of his own people. So, be careful who you root for...
The Red Army had guts. Suffered incredible losses.
@@namvet1968The Red Army were martyred by Stalin who employed strategies that required sacrifing millions of own troops instead of smart life saving maneuvers. This is why the casualty ratio on the Eastern front was 7:1.
Good morning, and again, Thank You for your Important, Informative, and Excellent videos. My Favorite World History Channel.🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Our pleasure! Thank you s much
It’s nice to see stories where many tears WERE and still are shed for people! There were just so many monsters in the Nazi n Soviet regimes that this is a nice change! Thank you.
What a girl, a true hero.
Jan was a man.
no hero, just a stalinist communist party member who had an illicit affaire with Bonekamp (who had a wife and child)
Many tears shed
Videos like this are inspiring and important. I have only just found out that my mother was active in the resistance. 80 years for the story to come out. I will go to the Verzetsmuseum when I go to Holland in the next few months.
The Dutch Resistance most feared Dutch collaborating Nazis who, in their tens of thousands, acted as ancillaries to the Gestapo and even volunteered to join the Waffen SS (over 22,000). About 65,000 collaborators fled the Netherlands in 1944/5. There were far fewer people in the Resistance, 5-12,000 in total.
That is a matter of definition. The number of people involved in violent resistance was not that high. Apart from spying, war military resistance was pointless in the Dutch context. But at some pointer 350.000 people were hiding to escape deportation to concentration camps, POW camps or forced labour in Germany. All these people needed to be fed and sheltered. Food was only available with official papers that were obviously not available to them. So papers had to be forged or stolen and distributed. That means the the number of people involved in hiding those sought by the Germans ( the "onderduikers" ) was probably close a million. The acts involved were most far from spectacular, but deadly nevertheless if you were caught by the Germans. All those people were part of a resistance and should be respected for their moral compass and courage.
@@martijnb5887 the number I quoted, 5-12000, was active lethal armed resistance. Civil resistance was much greater and could take many forms. What is sad is the role and results of the actions of Dutch Nazis.
Compliments for your pronounciation of the Dutch names!
Rest in peace
I shed tears for you 😭😭
Thank you very much for this vid, I appreciate it a lot 👍
Greetings from the Netherlands ✌, TW.
Hi Tonny. Thank you for your kind words. We love the Netherlands and travel there every year ... glad you appreciate our focus on your country in this project.
Greetings
Jan Bonekamp was not a brutal Nazi killer. In the resistance you are not a killer, you are a FIGHTER!!!
A fighter for your freedom.
In my hometown Nijmegen there was also such a resistance hero. His name is Jan van Hoof. He was killed by a German sniper.
They are Beautiful Monuments. Rest In Peace 🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🙏🙏🙏🙏
Always fight and defeat fascism.
spot on
I live in the northern part of the Netherlands and in most if not all little villages and/or woodlands around there are memorials for those that have been executed in the last days of the war. Either because they were actively involved in the resistance or as retribution. Not to mention the many signs of jewish people who never returned or returned devastated by unspeakable hardship. There is no question of forgiveness, its an understanding that life goes on. There was too much broken to think about forgiveness or retribution after the war.
I watch these videos and see the people getting on the trains. I look at their faces. I know their fate as they innocently cooperate. And I think, “what would do in those situations?” I pray I never have to know what I’d do.
The movie " het meisje met het rode haar" (the girl with the red hair) is on youtube for you to watch. An old but great movie about Hannie en Jan. With Renee Soutendijk as Hannie. When you have the time be sure to watch it. 👍📽📺
For anyone who may be interested there is a Dutch film available free on u tube called ''de meisje met rode haar'' [the girl with red hair] which I recomend watching as it covers some of the events in this excellent documentary. Alas the film is in Dutch but its worth watching if only to see the execution of the collaborator Ragut by Hannie Schaft and Jan bonekamp in one of the most memorable scenes I shall never forget..
Love your vids 🙌
That I might have the courage and conviction…..
There's so much debate about the bombing of German cities by the allies these days, but nazi Germany bombed lots of other cities before, including one before WW2: the Spanish town of Guernica, which they bombed during the Spanish civil war in the 1937.
Picasso's painting is incredible.
They don't want to know about this at Columbia University.
They were dutch heroes like the many here in the Netherlands. The 4th May we will remember them all .
Totally true
I met a man in Holland that had a concentration camp number tattoo on his arm.
Not everyone knew that Mauthausen was a death sentence. Strongly suspected, but not known.
I read that more Dutch joined the Waffen SS then were active in the resistance.
The people who collaborated and resisted are both about 5% of the population 90% did neither.
I don't know the actual numbers but we dutchies sent over 100k Jews to death camps. And we had the highest percentage of men joining the Waffen SS for fighting in Russia. If you study the actual resistance operations that the Germans had to report every week to Berlin, it mostly consisted of blowing up a train track of killing a Nazi or NSB members. And hiding Jews or allied soldiers etc. The Germans sometimes didn't have anything to report for that week, the logs showed after the war.
We hated being occupied, but the overwhelming majority of Dutch people kept their heads down, looked away and tried to survive the war. And if it were me, I'd probably do the same.
The people in the Dutch resistance are true heroes, risking their own life to save many others.
@@timdebruijne9127 Exactly. And if you hear people now, almost every great grandfather was in the resistance.
That isn't correct. I get your point but why lie and exaggerate to get your point across?
Brutal killer? I would expect a Nazi sympathizer to use that terminology. Jan Bonekamp was a true, hero, a fighter for freedom...I honestly find many of your titles very disturbing.
Father was in WWII Germany and uncle WW11 south Pacific God bless America
Leave it up to a nationalistic American to turn every subject into something about America.
As a British person, your voice confuses me. Why the weird force behind it? It sounds like a comedy parody. The content is great but what's going on? 😂
What remarkable and brave Dutch patriots!
He's a Taurus ♉️ like me 👍🏿
Many people don’t know that the Dutch were the last group of people to be liberated. Their country was under siege until May, 1945. During this siege, Dutch people had very little food, water and medical supplies. The Canadians finally liberated Holland.
As a Canadian, I was made very welcome when I moved to Amsterdam 35 years ago.
Over wrought narrator voice
Bit of a background on the February strike in 1941. At the ice shop “Koco” the jewish owner and his brother/friends stood up against a German police check. Some police were injured and I believe someone was killed. As per the normal Nazi reaction, but for the first time in The Netherlands, they organized two razzia’s, rounding up hundreds of Jews. As a high number of locals of Amsterdam, witnessed this, some organizer the strike by stopping public transit and the waste collectors. In the end the whole of Amsterdam was on strike.
After two day the Germans started shooting and arresting people. And on top of this all, the city of Amsterdam was fined for 15 million guilders! (Wages were some guiders a week at the time)
There were few (and no organised) Dutch resistance networks. German penetration was complete and many dutch and every single SOE or OSS operative sent to Holland were captured and either killed or turned.
Tell that ti Ragut...
7:14 That is the grote markt square in Haarlem, strange to see Germans soldiers riding around there. Even stranger, it was also the site where the Spanish conducted mass executions after they stormed Haarlem after a 10 month siege in 1573. Funny thing is for me as a local, personally the Grote Markt has always been a really happy place filled with fun and festivities.

To bad the royal house treated the resistance badly. England spiel for e.g.
The picture at 04:40 is at Olympiaplein, Amsterdam, and in 2023 has been turned into a monument for remembrance of deportation of Jews with 'shadows' from that very picture. Paid for by government and openedby schoolkids and mayor. I live nearby that spot.

Do US citizens have this kind of guts?
Well they let traitor trump walking around freely even after his Beer hall putsch at Jan 6th. His MAGA waving the the rebel flags AND swastikas. So there is your answer.
Jan Bonekamp was actually born in IJmuiden.
Have you got a speech impediment?

En nu noemen ze het verzet in Palestina terroristen ,het ondergrondse werden ook terroristen genoemd

Better than the french
About the disclaime. You don't include violence against political usurpers.
WWII started on the 3rd of September when Britain and France declared war on Germany.
No, it started in Munich in 1938 when Britain and France appeased Hitler by giving him Czechoslovakia. If the West had said No to your hero, the Wehrmacht would have been crushed within 6 months. No second world war, no death camps in Poland, no 70 million dead.
Indeed after the war everyone had resisted the Nazi’s😂 if the had, the whole Jewish community would not have been destroyed, they had given the survivors of the death camps their houses and belongings back. They would not have charged them for the transportation fees t those camps. I could go on.
Not that I know what to do in such a predicament, however, I do hope I would not shout out I was part of the restistance.
A brutal murderer. Good thing they caught him.
Well given that the person they shot was a vile collaborators, responsible for a number of arrests (meaning a certain death), it’s also an act of resistance.
The titel should be, in correct perspective and english: "...to brutal killer of nazis".
Using the word brutal in titles where there is justice not brutality is misleading.
The Dutch resistance was the best and most powerful resistance in Europe. Unfortunately since Holland was half pro Nazi, the U.S. military was reluctant to accept Dutch resistance help and military intelligence.
