  • The Dutch Teenage Girls who Seduced and Brutally Killed the Nazis - Freddie & Truus Oversteegen. The 10th of May, 1940, World War 2, the Netherlands. Nazi Germany invades Holland and the German Air Forces - the Luftwaffe - use paratroopers in the capture of tactical points and to assist in the advance of ground troops across the country. The invasion is accompanied by heavy aerial bombardment of Rotterdam and culminates on the 14th of May with the destruction of its entire historic center. Because the Germans threaten to bomb the city of Utrecht in the same way, the Dutch forces surrender one day later. Soon after the Nazis start to occupy the whole country and pass new anti-Jewish laws which are designed to exclude Jewish people from society and restrict their livelihood. The systematic deportations of Dutch Jews to death camps start in July 1942. However, because some Dutch citizens cannot bear to see what is happening to their country and people, they join the resistance. Among them are two sisters who will become known for resisting the German occupation and killing the Nazis. Their names are Truus and Freddie Oversteegen.
Truus Oversteegen was born on 29 August 1923 in Schoten, the Netherlands. Her younger sister Freddie was born 2 years later on the 6th of September 1925 and the sisters lived with their parents on a barge. The sisters grew up in a socially aware household and their mother, a communist, had a strong intolerance for injustice. When their parents divorced, the girls stayed with their mother and were raised in a small apartment in the city of Haarlem. The family lived in poverty and slept on improvised mattresses stuffed with straw. They were taught compassion for those less fortunate than themselves and the sisters would often share the same bed to spare the other one for the Jewish refugees from Germany that were regularly housed in their small apartment.
World War 2 started on the 1st of September 1939. On the 10th of May 1940 Germany invaded the Netherlands. Soon after a civil administration was installed under the SS auspices and Arthur Seyss-Inquart was appointed Reich Commissar of the Netherlands. Among his first step were a series of laws posing economic discriminations against the Jews. Soon after the occupation, a commander of the Haarlem Council of Resistance knocked on the Oversteegen’s door and asked their mother if the girls could join the underground fight against the Nazis and she agreed. At the time Truus was 16 years old and Freddie was only 14. In an interview in 2016 Freddie recalled the horrifying moments following the German occupation saying: ‘“I remember how people were taken from their homes, the Germans were banging on doors with the butts of their rifles - that made so much noise, you'd hear it in the entire neighborhood. And they would always yell - it was very frightening.”
On the 22nd and 23rd of February 1941, German forces raided the Jewish Quarter in Amsterdam, arresting and deporting more than 400 Jewish men to the Buchenwald and Mauthausen concentration camps. The Dutch people’s reaction was unique among the Nazi-occupied Europe: they organized the February Strike, a two-day general strike, which started on the 25th of February 1941. German officials brutally suppressed the strike. This action was followed by a hardening of Nazi policy. The German authorities as well as collaborating Dutch authorities and civil services segregated Jews from the general Dutch population and incarcerated 15,000 of them in German-administered forced-labor camps. The Germans then ordered the concentration of Jews in Amsterdam and sent foreign and stateless Jews to the Westerbork transit camp in the northeast part of the country. Some of the remaining provincial Jews were sent to the Vught camp.
The sign ‘Forbidden for Jews’ appeared on the doors and gates of cafes, swimming pools, sports fields, museums, zoos, libraries, theatres, markets and many other public places. Jews had to hand over their valuables, and their businesses were confiscated.

I was told this story by a Dutch friend.
Her mum grew up during the war in a house with two sisters. During the German occupation, in the middle of a very cold winter, one of the sisters became ill and started to deteriorate. There was little prospect of summoning a doctor or getting her to hospital. The girls slept in the same bed and put their poorly sister in the middle, where she could get the warmth from the two others' bodies and where they could keep an eye on her. Despite this, she died and her parents contacted the authorities. They were told to leave the body outside so that she could be collected and dumped in a mass grave.
The parents, understandably, didn't want to do such a thing. Her father worked as a carpenter, and took wood from his and his wife's bed to make her a beautiful coffin which they decided to bury at the back of their apartment. The garden was enclosed by the backs of other apartments, so it would have been easy for them to be seen, which is why they decided to do it later at night. Unfortunately, the ground was frozen hard and, no matter how hard they struck it with the shovel, they couldn't break it open. Worse yet, they had been overheard and lights were going on in other apartments.
Nobody in the family knew what to do and were sure that the Germans would be alerted, but people from the other apartments came along with coats over their nightclothes and quietly helped them dig a hole and bury their daughter. When they were finished, the people went back inside, still in complete silence, and nothing was said to the German or Dutch authorities.
And I have another story - sorry for the long post.
A friend of my grandma's had a husband who was in the Parachute Regiment and who parachuted into Holland as part of the ill-fated Arnhem campaign. He was due to travel to a regimental reunion about forty years afterwards, but died before he could make the trip. She sewed his Parachute Regiment crest onto her own blazer and went out in his memory. The Dutch hotel refused to let her pay for her stay and every restaurant she ate at wouldn't take any money, because they knew her husband had been a hero.
So, to all the Dutch people, from here in the UK, I send my love, thanks and admiration.

My guess, because they were women and Dutch and possibly communists. Women fighting and killing, equal to men, was not a popular idea. Nor were communists, and the Dutch aren't in general too bothered about the past and heros, with a few exceptions. Internationally when people think WWII resistance, they think France and not "Collaborating" ( as it is often viewed) Netherlands. Oh and lastly, because they survived. We Dutch usually only put dead people on pedestals ( literally and figurativelly). In the past anyway.

Thanks for the input@@ttaibe , interesting and informative perspective! I guess I'm still confused as to why more of the international community hasn't caught onto this story. Today people absolutely froth for stories about unlikely women heroes, especially those living in a time when these roles were seen as being reserved for men. Although the current mainstream feminism movement has drifted pretty far from its original purpose (very unfortunately in my opinion at least), it's still one that grabs every opportunity to highlight and celebrate cases like this. Wonder why today it hasn't got much attention (yet, I hope)?

Many small European countries have been occupied on and off for hundreds of years, from the Romans onwards. It's citizens "exported" as slaves. It is such a shame that such dishonour is done to the brave Dutch Resistance by such a cheap production as this where totally unrelated pictures are paraded before us. This is a common feature on these videos. There are many unrelated pictures on this video but perhaps, the most notable is 9.58-10.05 The narration is about an execution by firing squad yet the pictures are of a guillotine, the German method of judicial execution ..... SO ... did Hanne die by firing squad or by beheading ..... or was she just shot?
As it happens, I know, so, for any in doubt, after 4 weeks of interrogation and torture (I am sure that I do not need to elaborate), the purpose of the torture was not mindless, it was hoped that she would spill the beans on others in the Resistance, it appears that she did not, on the 17th April 1945, she was taken out into the coastal dunes in the vicinity of Bloemendaal by two characters, Mattheus Schmitz and Maarten Kuiper. (hardly a firing squad). I don't have any imformation on Mattheus, but Maarten was a Dutch Nazi who was responsible for Jew-hunting and he was very successful at it. He was responsible for uncovering many Jews in hiding. He had a reputation for being particularly brutal during interrogations. Being Dutch, he was able to pick up things that may have gone over the heads of Germans. The two of them took Hanne out onto the dunes. Mattheus attempted to shoot Hanne in the head but botched it so Maaten finished the job, so he later said, with a burst from a machine gun. Hanne is buried in Bloemendaal.
I don't know where the piece of script at 10.09 comes from but some of it is rubbish. She was arrested distributing copies of a communist newspaper, "de Waarheid" (The Truth) which was a front for distributing imformation to other resistance workers. If she had a pistol, she would have used it. She had done it in a tight spot before and she had no illusions about what would follow arrest. She would have taken at least one of the bastards with her. She was NOT forced to wash her hair.. They didn't know who they had. Another Resistance worker, Anna Wijnhoff, under torture, betrayed Hanne. Anna might not even have known what she had done but the Nazis twigged. It was then that the Nazis restrained Hanne and looked at the ROOTS of her DYED hair.
The narrator has a major problem with English grammar. He said time after time "would". NO ! HE or she "DID" etc.
For instance, not, "She would go", but "She went" .

Good for these two brave females ... I take my hat off to ya's!
But, on the other hand ... the Nederlandsche SS (Dutch SS) which was formed on September 11, 1940 was a Dutch branch of the SS. On November 1, 1942 the name was changed to Germansche SS in Nederland (Germanic SS in the Netherlands). The Nederlandsche SS in total eventually counted about 25,000 members (see below) and was primarily a political formation. In addition it served as a reservoir for the Waffen-SS. They dressed in black uniforms that were based on those of the German SS. The Belgians and French had their own SS based on the German SS and reporting to them!
