Amtrak, in a recent poorly conceived decision, decided to retire the five Pacific Parlour Cars that were well known and appreciated on the Coast Starlight.
On February 17 and 18, 2018, these cars departed Los Angeles on the eastbound Southwest Chief where we were fortunate to catch them in Albuquerque and Lamy, New Mexico.
Evan Stair, of the Friends of the Southwest Chief, writes:
    "Pacific Parlor Car Significance
The Pacific Parlor Cars were originally purchased by the Santa Fe Railway in the 1950s for the Chicago-Kansas City-Los Angeles El Capitan. The El Capitan was the first extra fare Hi-Level intercity coach passenger train.
Three types of cars were purchased. These included coaches, diners, and these lounge cars. Eventually, the Hi-Level equipment spread out over the entire Santa Fe passenger system. You would see Hi-Level coaches on trains such as the Texas Chief and the San Francisco Chief.
Amtrak took over Santa Fe passenger operations in 1971. The Hi-Level cars constituted a portion of the Santa Fe's payment for joining Amtrak. The Santa Fe transferred other cars to Amtrak, but the Hi-Level cars were unique. In fact, they inspired Amtrak to work with car manufacturers to design and build the Superliners you see today.
The cars migrated to the Coast Starlight and were renamed the Pacific Parlor Cars. These are the last first class lounge cars to run on any Amtrak passenger train. They were unique to the Coast Starlight as their simply were not enough of them to use on other routes.
Re-purposed, the Pacific Parlor Cars were intended to be only for sleeping car passengers while the Superliner Sightseer Lounge was intended for coach passengers. Amtrak CEO Richard Anderson believed these non-revenue cars were an extravagant, non-standard expense the company could no longer afford. No doubt Anderson's tenure at Delta Airlines has him cutting every possible amenity to squeeze the last penny out of ever dollar.
It is a sad day as Amtrak continues to chase the impossible dream of self-sufficiency. As it does so, even though Congress removed the for-profit mandate from law in the 1990s, it makes train travel just a bit less enjoyable in the US."

So much for any future use of the Pacific Parlour Car fleet. Once again Amtrak under Anderson shows no vision. They won’t even move your car by Amtrak. Pathetic. All five ex-Santa Fe Hi-Level Lounge Cars, eg. the entire Pacific Parlour Car Fleet are in the sale list, plus Heritage Fleet baggage cars, P42 and F40 locomotives and even an Horizon Fleet set of cars.Subject: Fwd: Sale Offer Diesel Locomotives and Railcars (48 Total Units)October 17, 2018

Back in 2005, I took my family on a train vacation, starting on the Southwest Chief in Flagstaff, then up the coast on the Coast Starlight. I had seen the cars on Coast Starlight consists many times in Eugene Oregon, and I was really excited to be able to experience the Pacific Parlour car as a passenger. Then they told me it would not be in the consist due to maintenance. I was crushed. The Pacific Parlour car lives on as part of my Coast Starlight consist on my N Scale layout. Thats as close as I'll ever get now. R.I.P.

It would be nice if a few of those cars would go to the Illinois railroad museum & even the Smithsonion Institute or even a tourist railroad. Those were very nic passenger train cars. The Santa Fe always loved passenger service, so did the Seaboard Coast Line railroad, this was in the pre Amtrak days.

Think of what progress high speed trains could bring to your country! By the way, it should make the present president happy: a lot of construction for making new infrastructure and a ,ot of jobs. Then the removal of old parlour cars from active duty wouldn't be so hard, as long as few of them will be preserved. Best wishes from Europe.

Sad, just that airline people know nothing about running a railroad. The problem is that under the Trump administration things will only get worse.

Airline people don't seem to be very good at running airlines either. I agree that many things are getting worse under tRump and Amtrak is probably going to suffer as well. Thanks for watching, Charles!

tRump knows nothing about running a country, and now under his crappy presidency, things are becoming less and less enjoyable.....

The next thing you know, he'll get rid of the dining cars and replace them with vending machines!

Trainzguy 2472 That sounds like the Southern Pacific in the later years of their long-distance passenger service.

Do you feel Trump had the time to specifically deal with private rail cars and the old El Capitan cars....Really?

The new president of Amtrak is now going to treat Amtrak like an airline company. In fact Amtrak is going to be like the airlines where they serve complimentary meals rather than having a dining car on trains. This is bad for the traditional way of eating meals on trains.
