Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad - Gold Rush!
Переглядів 5283 дні тому
September 28, 2024, and we are at the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad in Chama, New Mexico hunting for gold! Golden Aspens, that is! This is the time of year when the mornings are cool and the leaves are starting to turn from green to gold. As we chase 488 up the 4% grade toward Cumbres Pass, the Aspens are starting to turn and by the time we reach the pass, many of the leaves are a bright yel...

On July 23, 2024, we stayed overnight in Trinidad, Colorado on the first leg of our Big Boy trip. We caught the Amtrak Southwest Chief going eastbound and westbound at County Rd 18.3.

Cumbres & Toltec 488 Fired by David Weston!
Переглядів 55024 дні тому
On August 2, 2024, we were in Chama, New Mexico and when my friend David Weston told me that he would be a student fireman on Cumbres & Toltec 488 pulling the train from Antonito to Chama, I put aside concerns about the rain and headed toward Los Pinos. David has been a conductor for the railroad for several years and it’s good him taking up new challenges. Afternoon rains are common in the mou...
The Georgetown Loop Railroad!
Переглядів 358Місяць тому
The narrow gauge Georgetown Loop Railroad was built by the Georgetown, Breckenridge and Leadville Railway, and was completed in 1884 and considered an engineering marvel for its time. The thriving mining towns of Georgetown and Silver Plume lie 2 miles apart in the steep, narrow canyon of Clear Creek in the Rocky Mountains west of Denver. Engineers designed a corkscrew route that traveled nearl...
C&TSR 489 From Chama to Tanglefoot!
Переглядів 861Місяць тому
On August 2, 2024, we caught Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad's K-36 489 as it climbed the grade to Cumbres Pass from Chama, New Mexico. In 2021, work was completed on the conversion to burn oil but was taken out of service in 2023 for extensive work on its running gear and firebox. In May of 2024, we caught it fired up and moving during the opening day of the season. The locomotive is now back...
Durango & Silverton Double Header!

On July 31, 2024, we traveled to Durango, Colorado to catch the 9 AM train as it heads to Silverton. Today, 476 and 493 double head the 15 cars filled with travelers enjoying a perfect Colorado morning. I've shot these locations before, but I wanted to try some slightly different drone perspectives and I'm pleased with the results. Thanks for watching and please subscribe to the channel! www.du...

Officially known as the Santa Fe Branch of the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad, The narrow gauge Chili Line ran from Antonito, Colorado, to Santa Fe, New Mexico. The D&RG began construction of the line in 1880 and completed the line from Antonito, Colorado, to Española, New Mexico, and finally to Santa Fe in 1886. The line closed in 1941 due to competition from road transportation. On Augu...

From Sunday, June 30, 2024, to July 26, 2024, Union Pacific’s Big Boy, number 4014 went on the Westward Bound Tour visiting Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, Idaho, and California before returning to Cheyenne. We chased it on the last day of the tour from Rawlins, Wyoming to near Laramie. Big Boy No. 4014 was delivered to Union Pacific in December of 1941. This powerful machine was built in 1941 to cross ...
Chicago!

In June, we visited Chicago, Illinois and one of the things I wanted to see was this! We've all seen this iconic location with the trains coming out of Union Station with 110 story Willis Tower in the background. It was 94 F on that bridge but worth the time I spent waiting for Amtrak 5, the westbound California Zephyr to start its journey to Emeryville, CA. There's always something going on he...
Loaded Coal at Larkspur!

As we were traveling south on I25 between Denver and Raton, we noticed a loaded coal train near Larkspur. This is a beautiful area and I got off the highway and set up the camera. The Colorado Joint Line is a railway corridor in Colorado running north-south between Denver and Pueblo. Presently the tracks are owned by the BNSF Railway and the Union Pacific Railroad and operated jointly. The firs...
The Colorado Railroad Museum!

On our recent trip to New York, we stopped at the Colorado Railroad Museum on the way home. The museum is located on 15 acres in Golden, Colorado, near Denver. The museum has over 100 locomotives, passenger cars, freight cars, and cabooses. There is a G scale garden railroad that was fun to see operating. We were there on June 22, 2024 and this was Colorado Power Days which meant one of the ste...

Located at the end of Main St. in Cassandra, PA, the railroad overlook sits at Milepost 255.8 on Norfolk Southern’s Pittsburgh Line. Looking to the west, one can see and hear trains climbing the mountain for 2 miles or more. The view to the east gives you a sweeping downgrade curve perfect for photos. Strasburg Rail Road and the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania!

In June of 2024, we took an extended trip to the east coast and visited a number of interesting railroad locations and museums. The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania is located on 18 acres in Strasburg, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The area is beautiful with rolling hills and Amish farms. This museum is one of the best I’ve ever visited. The museum's collection has more than 100 historic locom...
Riding the Cumbres & Toltec Media Train!
Переглядів 1,8 тис.3 місяці тому
On May 21, 2024, we rode the Cumbres & Toltec Media Train from Antonito, Colorado, to Chama, New Mexico. This invitation-only event was created to invite the media to find out what it’s like to ride this beautiful train, and to thank those of us that contributed to the railroad’s social media takeover during the year. We arrived at Chama shortly after 7AM to take the motor coach to Antonito. It...
This was a prefect video of #488 coal burner. Great shots and great photography and sound. Great job. Always impressed by your work. Thanks so much. 👍👍‼️‼️
Thank you very much!
This was a great year for the aspen trees. For reasons I don't know, there were a lot more red aspens this year. Very cool indeed.
Hey, Sam. I saw that you mentioned that on the NGDiscussion forum. I'm going back there tomorrow, hopefully to catch the Aspens at the lower elevations that hadn't turned yet.
@@YardLimit The last day I rode was COC on 10/5. The leaves are dropping fast. A bunch of the red leaves were in the Los Pinos area. I would imagine most of those leaves will be on the ground very soon. I don't recall many red leaves for the first 8 miles out of Chama. Let us know!!
I will!
Hello Thomas, another great video from my favorite narrow gauge railway, the Cumbres & Toltec. The K36 steam locomotives #489 and #488 in the Chama station are fantastic. The ride of #488 with its train through the autumnal landscape of New Mexico is very beautiful. Thank you for the wonderful video and warm greetings from Germany. Wolfgang
Thank you, Wolfgang! This is my favorite time of year and my favorite train.
I'd not realised how crazy-big those Sky Boxes are until I saw them next to a locomotive!
They are big!
Love 488's whistle, it gives me Galaxy Express 999 vibes!
7:30 it looks like a model railroad!😍🥰
It would be cool to have a model railroad that looked that great!
One of my favorite places to shoot the C&Ts is the top of the mountain to the east of Los Pinos tank. NOW, that is one big valley, and one tiny train going through it. "Model" railroading at its best.. See center top of the picture at 24:48. Fun 4WD to get there.
Amazing shot at 12:32, 13:56. It was incredible with stunning surroundings, breathtaking views and the sweet sound of the train.
Thanks, Dom. My favorite place to shoot video!
Will they start running double headers now? Fall is when the ridership goes very high!
Not this year. In the past they have done that, but this year decided to run two trains on select days. One leaves at 9, goes to Osier and returns, and the other is the regular train that leaves at 10AM.
Szép videó lett.😀👍
Thank you!
Well done , beautifully shot at a great time of year show casing the country side and train .
Thank you!
I’m jealous of all these great Colorado railroads you’re visiting all the time!
We're fortunate to live within an easy drive of Durango and Chama.
487 has been converted to oil!
Yes, and then it blew a cylinder and will be out of service for awhile.
@@YardLimit oh dang hopefully we get to see it next year!
Szép videó!😀👍
Thanks!
Nice locations and scenery. Excellent capture.
Thanks, Dom
Awesome train with beautiful scenery!
Thank you very much!
Hello Thomas, an interesting video about public transport in Massachusetts. Thanks for showing and best regards Wolfgang
Thank you, Wolfgang!
Welcome to Massachusetts. The state I Grew up in. Pretty soon those MBTA or T commuter trains will serve the towns in Southern Massachusetts I grew up in. Including Fall River and New Bedford. MBTA called this project “South Coast Rail”. The Fall River and New Bedford lines split at a junction in Myrick’s MA. And there will be a transfer station in East Taunton MA. Continuing on the trains will make a left turn at a wye and join the existing Middleboro and Lakeville line. With a stop at a secondary Middleboro station on the East leg of another wye. That wye is also a transfer freight yard that transfers freight between CSX and Mass Coastal trains. This would conclude phase 1 of this South Coast Rail project. Phase 2 will be partially electrified as trains will join on the Northeast Corridor in Attleboro MA. As well as the MBTAs Providence/Stoughton line. Sometimes I like when people call these trains the T. Rather its commuter trains or Subway trains. After all T is for Train. And with these trains coming to Fall River and New Bedford, it’s a huge beneficial change. They’ve announced passenger trains coming to those parts of Massachusetts. But plans would become canceled. And now after several years of planning it’s finally happening. And it’s great for Fall River residents who will travel by plane from Bostons Logan Int Airport as when the trains arrive at South Station in Boston all they gotta do is catch a Silver line bus to the airport. And they’re good to go. And traveling from Fall River and New Bedford by train will be so much easier as they won’t need to put up with so much traffic. Boston is tricky to drive in. I can’t wait till those T commuter trains start serving FR and NB. And when I take a trip there, I can experience my first ride on a T commuter train.
Thank you for the great information. I am all in favor of expanding public transportation. You’re definitely right about Boston being a pain to drive and so anything to eliminate that drive would be a welcome.
Nice location and capture. Interesting yellow locomotive. Well done🙂
Thanks, Dom!
Szuper videó lett!😀 Nyomtam egy nagy like!👍
Thank you!
Thanks very much! Great shots as usual and the rain made it more special! Hope the trip went well for Mr. Weston?
The rain always makes it fun. Thanks David!
The conducter was waving at you
It looks like they did a hybrid of her 1920’s look and her original built look
If I remember right they were trying to pattern it after approximately 1916 before it became Denver and Rio Grande Western.
No. 168 is a real Princess.
My favorite
Hi Thomas, a great video of the Cumbres & Toltec narrow gauge railway. I particularly like this railway, with its steam locomotives and the fantastic scenery. Thanks for sharing and have a nice week, best regards Wolfgang
Thank you, Wolfgang! It's my favorite railroad also.
Kind of late, but I saw this in Ogden, UT! it was amazing seeing it
Glad you got to see it!
Wonderful and amazing footage even with the rain.
The storms were pretty cool!

Köszönöm szépen! Szép videó lett.😀👍
Thank you Ferenc!
Thanks enjoyed the video of #488. A great old train. 👍👍👍
Thanks! The rain added a different flavor to it.
Nicely done on that video of engine 488 Thomas.
Thank you!
Great Video , However ,Id much rather see some closer images rather than far distant drone footage. Thanks
Generally, the places where I fly the drone aren't accessible on foot, for example, Lobato Trestle. There isn't a way to get close enough to it without trespassing on private property.
Hello Thomas, a very nice video of the Georgetown Loop Railroad. This bridge and the steam train crossing it are fantastic, superbly filmed. Thanks for showing it and have a nice Sunday. Best regards, Wolfgang
Glad you enjoyed it, Wolfgang!
Remarkable and a marvel of beauty.
Indeed! Thanks for watching, Dom!
I got to visit the place with my family back in June as it only 40 minutes away from where we were vacationing for a week in Colorado.
Thanks this close to where I live, Denver. 👍👍
I lived in Denver for years and never visited the Georgetown Loop. I made it a point to stop there in July on our Big Boy trip. It was fun to see!
Thanks for sharing. I rode the train for the first time yesterday. It was a grand experience. I would do it again when the aspens are golden.
Glad you enjoyed the ride! We're going to go back to photograph when the aspens turn. It's the best time of the year!
Sweet video. sadly this unit is now stored and up for sale due to freeze damage.
That is sad. I always feel like it may be the last time I photograph one of these when I see them. Sadly it sometimes is.
Szép videó lett!😀👍
Thank you!
Hello Thomas, a fantastic video of my favorite narrow gauge railway. Great filming, thanks for showing and kind regards Wolfgang
Thank you, Wolfgang! It's my favorite too!
Beautiful steam locomotive traversing a picturesque landscape, captured beautifully at 12:20. Exceptional black and white photography and always great aerial footage.
Thank you, Dom. This one was a lot of fun to shoot!
Nice blending of music and sound in the video work. This railroad is such a part of so many bucket lists. It never disappoints and always provides so much enjoyment to the passengers. You captured a great moment in time. Good job.
Thank you very much!
Great video and photography and sound. Thanks enjoyed watching. Awesome drone shots. 👍‼️‼️
Thank you very much. This was a fun one to do!
@@YardLimit Glad you enjoyed your trip. 👍👍
I have been on this Railroad line & it was well worth the price! The day I rode, there was a large group of Speeders traveling on that same time, just before our train pulled out!! That Club had the Most different types of Speeders I have ever seen!!!
If it was September 9, 2022, we were there too! ua-cam.com/video/1DwgiruSp4k/v-deo.html
Fantastic views! Thank you.
Thank you too!
was there a reason for the double heading or do they do that alot?>
It depends on the number of cars they are pulling. In this case the railroad needed to add an extra engine due to the number of cars.
Thanks for another great video!
Thank you for watching, David!
Hello Thomas, this double traction of the K28# 473 and the K37#493 with passenger train is great. Great film, thank you for showing it and kind regards Wolfgang
Thanks, Wolfgang! It was a great day to chase this train!
I have a quick question about your scanner setup. Did you get an SMA to BNC adapter to pair that laird antenna with your 125at?
No, the Laird has a BNC connector. I understand they are getting hard to find and one guy posting on TrainOrders said he got an adapter and it works fine.
@@YardLimit oh ok. Thanks!
@@YardLimit Do you know if it would make a difference if I got an EXH160BN (160-170mhz) vs the EXH160SMV which is 155-165mhz
it is possible that the 160BN is also 155-165mhz and is just labeled wrong on the website I'm on
I don’t know the answer to either of your previous two questions. You might ask the antenna maker or perhaps some online forum.
That video was taken one day after I went on the Durango and Silverton! My train was lead by 493&476!
Cool!
The locations are fantastic, the view is breathtaking, and the aerial footage is truly remarkable.
Thank you very much, Dom!
