    tires make a difference, also when they are stuffed with mud you may disable the asr and let them spin to throw the mud out, also try to no to stop, making it move again is next to impossible. :D

    the syncro got diff locks ..its more lighter than t5 and most important the engine is in the back more grip..

    Tires and weight is a huge factor, who know what the syncro and the T5 had on, so not a real compareson

      In a real comparison the superiority of the Syncro t3 against the Haldex t5 is even bigger, as you can see here:

    Rear engine,rear weight,more traction going up.

    Tyres! Tyres and a diff lock are everything in this situation. A standard 1970s kombi with the right tyres could make that also. A landcruiser with street tyres would also struggle.

      You can use any tyre or tyre combination. The fact is that the dual lockers, the gelande gear, the main axle, (which in a van or a truck is the rear, where, mainly, is loaded), in a 100% continuous, (and not intermittent), direct, drive, connected through gears and not softly through a hydraulic clutch, cannot be defeated.
      The above conditions exist, simultaneously, in a t3 Syncro and do not in a t5 Haldex, (with the exception of the rear locker).
      By using the same tyres the difference, in the favor of the t3, is maximized.
      This is the why the t3 is so unique and cannot be replicated even by it's creator, the VW.

      @@HellenicVanagonTheSyncroHeresy Thanks Hellenic. Ill do some more reading. There would be a market for something like this again. I have a Landrover Defender TD5 110 that is our work car and our tourer that we sleep in. Often driving along a beach in soft sand near midnight on a Friday night after work to find a place to camp. Wish the T6 was ok in soft sand.

      You can tell they had used both front and rear. This is why they made to the top without any issues...

    pour avoir eu les deux, j'ai largement préféré le T3 essence 90 CV aux T4 TDI de 105 CV. les 1ère et MA courtes, les blocages AV-AR, la garde au sol et le dégagement latéral au châssis et sur route, une tenue de route phénoménale !
    le T4, blocage AR, avait un plus en confort global, mais en conditions difficiles, y avait pas photo !
    mon seul regret avec le T3, c'est que la version 16" n'était pas homologuée en Suisse... Une histoire d'un ou deux dB...

    T3 was designed for army ( bundeswehr ), T4 and T5 was designed for city and highway not for offroad...

      The t5 is not a Syncro. It is a Haldex car without the Gelande and the front differential locker.

    It's not a comparison about Syncro and 4Motion. It's about two drivers. One who knows how to get up a hill and one who thinks nothing would be better than rotational speed except more rotational speed.

      it is. al the t3 has Bf goodrich AT tyre, the T5 has normal tyres. and the weigth also. T5 weight 300-400kg more.

    Syncro kerb weight 1395 kg, T5 2200kg. 800 kg +-70 if auto or manual.

    The t5 ist about 400kg more weight.
    Haldex is way better as synchro.

      The Haldex, especially for a bus, is much inferior to the Syncro:
      #1 Syncro vs Haldex. The Syncro transfers to the rear axle the 100% of the power where mostly needed, especially for a loaded bus:

      No, The t3 was designed as an offroad vehicle and also used on the road, the t5 was designed as an on road vehicle and also used off road, The t5 will win on road every time, the t3 will win off road every time, very different designs, both great vehicles but 1 is at home in the mud and the other at home on the road, but thats not to say you put some mud tires on the t5 it will still be a capable machine, just not as capable as the t3

      Please do not forget tha the Porsche b32 is a t3(2wd) and not a t5.
      The Syncro t3, (and to a lesser extend the 2wd), has an amazing behavior on road, partially due to a secret weapon: the unique, huge, frontal spoiler, which is a high speed stabilizator:

      As you can see into the above link, b32 considered stabler than a Porsche 911, (and they couldn't understand the why!).

    Weight and tyres. T3 is lighter, so has an advantage, but more unsafe and less confortable
