This is an invention and this is how it looks. Three halogen h4 bulbs operating simultaneously, the two of them reversed. For any front engine Syncro, with a free wheel, sooner or later, the rear differential actuator, for the reverse gear, will need a grommet, (009 525 642 vw part number), replacement.     the syncro got diff locks ..its more lighter than t5 and most important the engine is in the back more grip..

    Wow , Looks bad ass, Sounds nasty when scraping and clanging the undercarriage, scary ! So I got a 91syncro svx ,Bilstein, beefed upped skid plate, 225/75/16 So I have the clearance and the power. and I have done roads like this before .But this last year I put a punch, a punch of money into my Westy .. And now I cringe when watching this video , Knowing that I can!! but should I ? Oh are will I,, should I ? and you know the answer ,Which head will I use ? Especially when given a challenge The one with common sense are the one full of pride and Testosterone ? Well pretty sure I'll be listening to the scraping and clanging of my Westy's under belly once again ,In time due time !!

    tires make a difference, also when they are stuffed with mud you may disable the asr and let them spin to throw the mud out, also try to no to stop, making it move again is next to impossible. :D

    It's not a comparison about Syncro and 4Motion. It's about two drivers. One who knows how to get up a hill and one who thinks nothing would be better than rotational speed except more rotational speed.

    The t5 ist about 400kg more weight. Haldex is way better as synchro.

      The Haldex, especially for a bus, is much inferior to the Syncro: #1 Syncro vs Haldex.     I cringed as I watched those lovely, getting-scarcer-by-the-year, Vanagons rumble over such rough, rocky terrain. I hope none suffered serious damage. I don't mind if common Jeeps, Rovers, or other pedestrian 4x4 suffers damage. I'm going outside now to assure my 1986 Syncro that I will not subject it to such rough terrain. Looks like you had fun and that's most important.

      No, The t3 was designed as an offroad vehicle and also used on the road, the t5 was designed as an on road vehicle and also used off road, The t5 will win on road every time, the t3 will win off road every time, very different designs, both great vehicles but 1 is at home in the mud and the other at home on the road, but thats not to say you put some mud tires on the t5 it will still be a capable machine, just not as capable as the t3

      Please do not forget tha the Porsche b32 is a t3(2wd) and not a t5. The Syncro t3, (and to a lesser extend the 2wd), has an amazing behavior on road, partially due to a secret weapon: the unique, huge, frontal spoiler, which is a high speed stabilizator: www.vwsyncro.eu/p/blog-page_3.html As you can see into the above link, b32 considered stabler than a Porsche 911, (and they couldn't understand the why!).

    An amazing thing. My B3 also had it, but the previous owner threw it out, read the mechanic took it. I am currently trying to rebuild it, but there is a problem with parts, in particular the WABCO control unit.

    Nice video!! Btw isn't it that the passat syncro was sharing some of the awd components with audi 80 quattro? in that case some of the passat syncro didn't have rear diff locking ?

      Thank you very much. The Quattro is a VAG system but absolutely different from the Syncro, (first model applied: VW Iltis), and it is applied to Audi VW and Porsche models. The Syncro is a VAG system, (Ferguson patent, first front engine model applied Golf II, first rear model applied Vanagon/Transporter/Caravelle t25), and is applied to VW, Audi and Porsche models. The rear engine cars take a Syncro system with another architecture vs the front engine cars, but very similar. The t4, (Eurovan, Transporter, Caravelle), Syncro, is equivalent to the Passat b35i Syncro, in terms of transmission, but it has, as an optional, a rear locker which is missing for the Passat.     Tyres! Tyres and a diff lock are everything in this situation. A standard 1970s kombi with the right tyres could make that also. A landcruiser with street tyres would also struggle.

      You can use any tyre or tyre combination. The fact is that the dual lockers, the gelande gear, the main axle, (which in a van or a truck is the rear, where, mainly, is loaded), in a 100% continuous, (and not intermittent), direct, drive, connected through gears and not softly through a hydraulic clutch, cannot be defeated. The above conditions exist, simultaneously, in a t3 Syncro and do not in a t5 Haldex, (with the exception of the rear locker). By using the same tyres the difference, in the favor of the t3, is maximized. This is the why the t3 is so unique and cannot be replicated even by it's creator, the VW. I have a Landrover Defender TD5 110 that is our work car and our tourer that we sleep in. Often driving along a beach in soft sand near midnight on a Friday night after work to find a place to camp. Wish the T6 was ok in soft sand.

    you can get a roll of yellow teflon tape which is specified for gas work, its roughly 2 times more thick or heavy than the white roll, might be worth a try too, but great idea either way nice job

      Thank you very much for your comment. As for the yellow teflon tape, it's thickness is a desirable factor for some applications and you are right. For the specific application though, the belt has to be very thin, since the torque of the motor is low, as well as, the rollers do not accept any thicker belt than the original. On the other hand, the key here is to make a multi layer teflon belt, but very flexible, thin and, simultaneously, zero compliance, (for sound quality reasons), in order to have the opportunity to lock the layers. Without a successful locking whatever you do is dismantled as a matter of seconds. There may be better methods of course, but, up to now, I haven't seen any.
