I am 65 years old. Most of the things, musically speaking, from my younger days I find sadly lacking (maybe it's because I don't have a bong anymore). But Steely Dan is still on my list. I've been listening to The Dan for nigh on 50 years and they still astonish me with every thing about them. If you are a Steely Dan fan, you know what I mean.
I know how you feel, my friend. In my case is even worse, believe me. I live in Brazil and these fools of teens around here listen only to absolut garbage. Your parents have great taste in music, such as mine. We're lucky.
My wife and I were at this concert - I still remember the half-drunk guy next to us who, after every song, would chant “Kid Charlemagne! Kid Charlemagne!” He got his wish. Last time I ever got to see Cornelius Bumpus live. RIP.
It was Steely Dan and the Allman Brothers - the best American bands. The lyric, compositions, instrumentation - what Larry Carlton brought to this band is astonishing. I have never stopped listening to them.
I’m a big Steely Dan fan, but I gotta say, beyond the early years, they were not so much a band as a duo who hired people to record and/or tour with them. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve got no problem with that (although a lot of fans of the early Steely Dan did have a problem with it), but they somehow don’t seem to fit in the category of “band.” Maybe they created their own category?
I sincerely feel sorry for people who (for whatever reason) haven't been listening to Steely Dan's compositions over the years. There should be a non-profit charity that we can donate money to for people who are deaf to their music. It's so sad, I really wanna help them. Educate them. Enlighten them. Make them better people thru Danism
I used to be an actor...did a lot of Shakespeare.... But nothing compares to the opening of this song.....beyond perfect....I'dont wanta hurt no one....
Me and my little brother went to see them in Springfield Illinois at the state fair and they were unbelievable and me and my little brother sang each and every song that they played It was so much fun to be with my brother and they were perfect
There isn't anything in the music business today of this caliber, yes, they basically were a studio band, but whenever they played live, the two of them knew just what set of musicians would tour with them, and in the studio they were known to be two of the toughest critics of the tracks that these top of the line studio musicians were laying down, until they heard the sound they were looking for, that's why I rank AJA as one of the top three albums of all time.......🎶🎵🎷🎸🎹🎺🎤
Steely Dan SHOULD BE in any music lovers Top 5 Bands of ALL TIME. Extremely creative in both music and verse. Their phrasing is top notch. I think I've heard the Bridge on "Ricki Don't Lose that Number" a thousand times and it's just as wonderful at 999 than it was a 1. Musical Genius at Work!!!!!
The late 70s and forward through to the late 90's, were probably the richest times of music. Music has evolved since then, but the guitar coming of age, was a unique time.
Yea, me again.... Exquisite in every respect. All you pop song writers ( like me..), y'all just can quit now. It's the Brandenburg Concertos, kiddoes. Try our best: It's been done. Thank you all, Donald, Walter, and the many astonishing bands.
The complexity of all the different melodies coming into such perfectly tight complimentary unity is mind blowing, but this also attracted and compelled the cream of musicians to create a unique form of music. I have never heard it by any other composer. Fagen really was / is a genius.
This Clip of "Don't Take Me Alive" has Appeared and Disappeared MANY times on YT. We attended this and other dates on this tour. I don't get it. The Last Upload had much better audio. My girlfriend and I used to watch...we were saddened last time it vanished. Glad to see it uploaded again.
This one most likely to come to mind for all youth of the 70s it just hit us right between the worlds of then and everyone we new one hell of a Story line felt like ya knew em
It's a perfect fusion of rock, R&B, and jazz and one of the best of all his work in my opinion. I do wonder what was the basis of the topic of this song though. Maybe I'll find out before I die.
I think this song is about a kid who is a mass shooter. Luckless pedestrian. With rage in your eyes and your megaphones. I could hold out here all night. No red lights flashing. I know what I've done... Your thoughts?
Check out the Bogart film High Sierra esp the final scenes with Maddog Earle holed up on a high Sierra mountainside with the lawmen closing in …lots of references between the movie and the song
Music of this quality seems to be something from another world or another time? i wonder if we will ever see or hear such talent again.I am 69 and wonder where all the talent has gone? i cannot accept Taylor Swift is the state of music today? maybe i am a dinosaur lol?
There is always good music out there. It might take a bit of work, but you can chase down some things you'll like (It won't always be hit fare and it may not be exactly current). Don't get caught up in the past. By the way, I'm 73.
As good as this is, and it's GREAT, they are just a tad off their game here. Given Donald's sign-off "Goodnight!", perhaps this was the end of an encore and they were just a bit pooped out by then.

Couldn’t agree more mate🎼
Abos-fucking-ulty
I know exactly what you mean.
Agreed they have a level of sophistication and complexity which is not forced leaving indelible fingerprints
67 and totally hear you.
I’m 27 and I have listened to Steely Dan since I was a child thanks to my parents. I rarely meet people my age who know them. Sucks for them I guess
😂😂😂😂 Well said!
I know how you feel, my friend. In my case is even worse, believe me. I live in Brazil and these fools of teens around here listen only to absolut garbage. Your parents have great taste in music, such as mine. We're lucky.
Greetings from Poland ❤
Feel ya I'm 31 can credit my dad to showing me
Your parents have great taste young man !!!
You cannot compare this band to any other because no other is comparable. Simple fact!
The musicians who have worked with them over the years are the crème de la crème. Real honest-to-goodness talent.
So true. Well said.
Total Agreement! I.m 63 y.o. now.
A big YEP!

As I am 63 as well. Caught the SD fever back in ‘78 (Black Cow was the contagion) and I will flee from any known remedy.
My wife and I were at this concert - I still remember the half-drunk guy next to us who, after every song, would chant “Kid Charlemagne! Kid Charlemagne!” He got his wish. Last time I ever got to see Cornelius Bumpus live. RIP.
Jon Herrington plays this so well
Can thank Larry Carlton for the riffs.
I'm a Dan Fan,
that's what I am.
Cause they're the finest band,
in all the land!
It was Steely Dan and the Allman Brothers - the best American bands. The lyric, compositions, instrumentation - what Larry Carlton brought to this band is astonishing. I have never stopped listening to them.
A man after my own heart. Those are my two favorite bands, bar none.
wow i have never heard anyone say that out loud but i think you are right
This is the correct response! Unique sounds that still resonate with me after 50 years.
Talent wins out everytime. Today's music cannot come close.
I don't think there is any " music " out there today.
Those guitar solos were so well crafted during the original recording they are set in stone as part of the songs.
That is not Larry Carlton playing guitar he does not sound like Larry.
@@Physics072 I think he meant that Jon Herrington more or less kept to the scrip of important licks that Larry played in the original.
I don't like to compare bands, but come on these guys are the best.
Miss Carlton

WELL COMPOSED.....AND WELL SPOKEN!! IT'S THE TRUTH!!!
@@larryking2697 ha! Welcome my brother to The Church Of Danism
Lot of us could be a subject of this song. 48 years on, nothing is better. Thank God we still have SD songs.
Steely Dan, Pine Knob, warm summer evening, party favors, and sitting on the lawn- that's all the ingredients for a blissful experience.
Creating memories with the Fan are the most important 😊
The Dan
This was my dad's favourite song, he always said he wanted to have it at his funeral, he died last month and it was the first song that they played ❤
From their first record I was hooked. They got progressively better with each release. Huge influence on my life
Can't Buy A Thrill just was a grand announcement that 5hese guys were different. Remember this was the age of mind numbing disco.
And Another GREAT Steely song
Very impressed with Jon Herrington's guitar work on this, my favorite SD song. Very comparable to Larry Carlton's original.
I was at this show. For sheer fun and craziness, nothing could top their 1996 show at this same venue, but this show got close.
These lyrics are among the most piercing I've ever listened to
I used to be an actor...did a lot of Shakespeare.... But nothing compares to the opening of this song.....beyond perfect....I'dont wanta hurt no one....
A jewel . I’m also 65 !!!!!😊😊
Me and my little brother went to see them in Springfield Illinois at the state fair and they were unbelievable and me and my little brother sang each and every song that they played It was so much fun to be with my brother and they were perfect
Donald was in excellent voice here.
One of my favorite Steely Dan songs.....its a song of desperation....deep down into the soul....been there done that...from afar now!

My fave SD song.
Steely Dan... a "Have to have" in your music collection
Well I crossed my old man back in Oregon. Don't take me alive
Their music never grows old. I’m learning some of their stuff on piano and it’s challenging! Fagen is a beast.

I just stopped in to see Carolyn. In fine form. 😉
Isn't that the truth!
She’s a beautiful soul, isn’t she?
My favourite song from my favourite album.
Me too!!! By far...
Literally takes me away to lazy Sunday afternoons on the beach when I lived in Florida.
The late 70s and forward through to the late 90's, were probably the richest times of music. Music has evolved since then, but the guitar coming of age, was a unique time.
Jon Herington - awesome as usual
One of my top two favorite songs by Steely Dan.
Babylon Sister?
Musical excellence!
Yea, me again....
Exquisite in every respect.
All you pop song writers ( like me..), y'all just can quit now.
It's the Brandenburg Concertos, kiddoes. Try our best:
It's been done.
Thank you all, Donald, Walter, and the many astonishing bands.
What a fine, soulful perfomance by Mr. Fagen.
I AM FROM OREGON. 🥰
I was there. Great concert. Steely Dan always puts me in a good place.
The amazing DAN.
The complexity of all the different melodies coming into such perfectly tight complimentary unity is mind blowing, but this also attracted and compelled the cream of musicians to create a unique form of music. I have never heard it by any other composer. Fagen really was / is a genius.
OMG what a band! I grew up listening to these guys
Impeccable Harrington!! Still the Best!!

What a mood. The tastiest guitar intro in all of music, well-played!
Best band with elo out of the blue album 2023 amazing work back in 70s music 🎶
Beautiful song construction
Great song 🎵 can’t wait for the Dan to tour again and make it to the Woodlands Texas.
We did Good that night huh....
Thanks Pine Knob Video !!!
The excellent Jon Herrington.
A great song by a band that has many.
Now this is my song
Un genio ,Donald fagen, indiscutiblemente
Also 67 and totally agree, magnificently! 🎸
It was a bit hard to spot Walter but he was there at 3:19.
Jazzy and Rock and Roll! Muy buena musica!
Lota great times on the hill!
Steely Dan..
Nothing more to say.
Keep pulling this concert up song by song. Where's the whole thing?? This is amazing!
Exquisite...
FABULOSOS ❤
aka "Mad Dad" Yeah Keith... You got that right!
No other band has their unique sound. Been a
big fan for many years.
Very nicely said...
F yes!!! great !!!
YES!!!! MY RIDING MUSIC
Every track they ever done builds a vivid picture and mood in my mind instant pickup or to drift away too
Jon Herington does a great job of the guitar, almost a verbatim copy of Larry Carlton.
But with his own touches.
Fun fact here. The opening guitar rif is Jimmy Page's favorite bit of guitar work. That's gotta stand for something.
It's a lot of people's favorite piece of guitar work!
Mr. 335 for the win!!!
Bravo!
They pulled this off quite well.
A Great band out of Chicago by the name 'Brooklyn Charmers' do great Steel Dan. These guys are worth checking out...
Donald Fagen, Capricorn and Perfektionist
They should play their. songs on the radio stations....this is so much better than bon-jovi and Madona!!
🎉🎉🎉
Desperation is my daily companion.
Cool jazz.

I got a thang for C. L.
Ory-gun, not Ory-gone. Love the Dan!
Two questions... Where's Walter Becker, and who thought it was a good idea to put all the silly graphics over the band?
Sounds fantastic, but they didn't show Walter Becker but like once. WTH
example or warning?
It oozes outa their pours
Written by the great Larry Carlton
is that Larry Carlton on guitar?
No, it’s Jon Herington playing here. Larry did the studio version.
Ovation hollow body guitar here? Distinctive sound for sure.
Beautiful song. The sequel to Chief Bromden after he flew over the cuckoos nest.
First album was cant buy a thrill
As good as this is, and it's GREAT, they are just a tad off their game here. Given Donald's sign-off "Goodnight!", perhaps this was the end of an encore and they were just a bit pooped out by then.
Nowadays you could also easyllie sing maggots surrender instead of mad dog..
I ❤ Donald Fagen better than Pamela Morris.
Bad mix
These girls are ruining the song
Awsome performance👏🏻!👏🏻Best cover of dtma ever!👍 Cool you guys, keep it up!
One of my very favorite Steely Dan songs...
It IS my favorite! ❤
