Thanks for doing the review! That’s the color I ordered except with the brown interior and a AWD pro. Was hoping someone would do a video with that paint color :)
Nice closing frame with all the electric meters in the background 👏🏼👏🏼
This base model looks great. And RWD to boot.
How was Tennessee? Ask your dad if he remembers Tennessee Tuxedo. Or, maybe Nathan.
Great video mate
@Tommy, do you have any idea what the color combo was on the one you reviewed. As other commenters noted, it appears to be a combination not on their website.
Would be interested to get an update on the credit incentive. A $30k ID 4 would be quite nice. I think most people could road trip this without too much issue either as it still gets 140kw charging which beats the 55kw of the Chevy bolt (the next closest car in terms of purchase price)
These are off my shopping list until owners are reporting the software problems are fixed and VW appears to have a solid development program.
Yep , just a paperweight at this point.
I purchased a 2022 model about a month ago and it has the latest software update (3.1). It’s working well, no complaints.
Same, 2022 model is fine and has same software version as this 2023 one
2022 and above models have the much improved software compared to the 2021
I have a 2021 with the 10inch screen and my only issue is that scheduled charging doesn't work. That's it. I schedule charging with my Juicebox anyway
Biggest issue is what is happening with the tax incentive for Vw specifically.
do you know if this was a production car? I have one of these on order and you can’t get that interior color with that interior color on the configurator and it looks like it has the cloth material from the seats on the doors on the configurator as well
My order has those seats. Finally an auto press covers the entry level interior!!!!
i just brought home my 2023 ID.4 pro RWD. Traded my Nissan Frontier 2022 SV 4x4. I do really love this car. I haven't been this excited getting a new car (from my experience with 2015 Tucson turbo, Lexus NX300 FS, and my truck. Still learning all the features/Functionality. It doesn't come with a mobile charger and the VW is more expensive than tesla's ($350 vs $230). Good thing Amazon has a lot of stuff (got the BougeRV level 2 EV 16A that comes with NEMA 5-15 adapter for regular 110V outlet with 20A fuse). Also, I AM LOVING THE SPEAKER SYSTEM!!!
My "I wish" thoughts so far:
- I wish powerlift tailgate is standard across the trims.
- The buttons for volume and climate should've been backlit. Although pressing the climate control will give you full functionality adjustments on screen.
- i wish i have the 12V port near the dashboard so i can run my dashcam without hardwire or taking a long trip to the back. Or at least a USB port behind the rearview mirror on my trim.
The steering wheel volume touch sliders are the easiest to use ever.. you literally just have to gently swipe your finger from left right and vice verse. No need to keep clicking it. Much better than knobs or buttons.
How is that better than a knob that offers tactile feedback, allowing you to develop muscle memory? So many questionable missteps in this interior by making everything merely touch-sensitive.
This should be great for around the town driving and charging at home. But highway driving will be limiting. 200 miles will be 160 ish miles recharging to 80% Then driving 75 mph will reduce the range by at least 30-40 miles. Estimating about 2 hrs of highway driving, then charge for 30 minutes if you are lucky. We will have to wait for the range test to see.
I agree. You must charge it for 30min for every 2hr drive. It works for a 4hr road trip & anything over will be really irritating.
Got a pure grey standard on order thank you for the review
Same pinch.
Darn - I was hoping we'd get a real life preview of the Nutmeg interior color, very curious how it compares to the photos in the VW configurator...
I like the value videos!
Question is what does this qualify for tax credit wise? It's built in the US so that's a check but what about the source of the batteries?
Infotainment looks too laggy. Physical buttons for the most commonly used functions are very desireable, IMO. VW should copy the Bolt EUV for volume on the radio, either on the infotainment or on the steering wheel. It could even go on the back side of the wheel, like the EUV. Also, I think physical buttons for temp control are important. I do like the faster charging that this has over my EUV and the cargo capacity in the rear area.
I love the VW ID.4 & ID.5 and no glass roof.
Mostly I want to know what safety features are included: Blind spot monitor, etc?
Does this include Adaptive cruise control ?
I thought Nutmeg was the only cloth interior trim color available with the blue exterior? This one looks like it has grey leatherette instead of nutmeg.
Thought the same. Why I got the grey instead
Exactly! I was looking forward to see that nutmeg looked.
but does the software work without glitches?
@TFLEV Is that blue more turqoisy due to your camera or is that a new color that will be available at some point? The currenty tourmaline blue was the only blue option for either the Standard or "S" trims. I'd get that turqoise in a heartbeat if I could.
That’s tourmaline blue. I had the same question if their camera was making it look lighter. I love how it appears in the vid, but have also seen it appear darker on other VW models
Bet the ID.3, with less curb wt & better lines would go close to 240 or maybe 250 on the 62kWh pack. But ….. VW is sure the ID.4 is all that mainstream America wants. Who would look the wrong way at a hot hatch??
A solid discount but I want the NACS port too. Sould be on the 2024.
Any update on the software glitches?
We have a German built 2021 RWD ID.4 Pro S w/gradient. We absolutely love it. Great review!
What type of battery is it using I hope lfp
They need to change the infotainment system and the steering wheel controls. Personally I like real knobs and switches and I think that’s something Volkswagen needs to fix. Maybe not in this market but when people have lots of choices I think their controls will be a deal breaker for lots of people. An unforced error.
So VW will make the ID.4 in the U.S., but Ford & GM make the Mach-E & Blazer EV outside of the U.S.. All get the same North American subsidies.
Wow love it
A great comparison will be this base ID4 vs Chevy Bolt EUV at similar pricing. One has more range, smaller, but with slower charging. The other one has less range, bigger, but with faster charging. Which one will be easier to live with.
Faster charge rates are going to pay off more often on road trips
Chevy Bolt is a subcombact, while ID4 is a compact SUV. Huge size difference and in totally different class.
@@jarjarbinx79 The ID4.4 is a compact? Dang. It's a big car to be rated a compact.
almost $10K difference in starting price ($28K Bolt vs $37K ID4), they are not at similar pricing as you say
Does the standard have a heated steering wheel?
Does it have ACC and driver assist? Actually it's a very good looking car. Thanks for the first look into it.
Yea every id4 has them standard.
I need the glassssssss!!!!!!!!
The thumbnail is my favorite. Good job tommy my best friend and angel
I'll probably wait for the Equinox.
Did they fix that lacky software?
30K out the door please.
The Standard model not available anywhere
the floor under the carpet is green?
I like it.. like the price for sure.
What is the colour of the car under review in this video?
Even without a fed tax incentive, that price would make it affordable for most consumers. Should still qualify for half fed (~3,500) even w out battery credit, not to mention any state incentives (IL offers 4,000..for now). Would put this at least at $30k which is cheaper than most new ice cars… great for around town/medium trips, if only software concerns were resolved!!!
Does this have lumbar support?
Thank you for showing the 2023. I have one reserved and have been wondering what the 2023 changes looked like. I’m super excited.
How much coffee had you have this morning?
@@brhutchi I am not sure I understand the reasoning behind your comment.
I am wondering too. Also wondering about the tax incentive. The infotainment system is supposed have changed in the US market. Can anyone get this info
Right on, Wayne! Do you have an ETA on delivery?
@@MarioDallaRiva Locked mid September. Delivery showing December to January.
1. Calling a $37k car "affordable" is a joke on the general public.
2. I sat in one of these recently at the Texas State Fair, and it was not comfortable. Very small inside for the driver, and not much cargo space for its size, which was disappointing because I really wanted to like this vehicle.
What are they doing to support their first model firmware wise? It seems they abandoned them.
did they fixed software issues for 2023?
Sweet a well equipped car at the entry level and a solid roof without glass which I was not a fan of in the first place, they just make the car way too hot in summer which makes the climate control work more sucking power out of your battery killing range , plus a steel roof gives the I.D.4 more structural rigidity means less sqeuaks /rattles, the fit/finish looked good and if the infotainment system has a few quirks i could live with those , besides any future over the air updates will just improve things a bit anyways, just like any new phone gets, $37k is good ,so that would put it $43/45K CDN , hopefully not more , i just need mud flaps and a set of Michelin X-ICE winter tires and i am good to go, this could be the ideal replacement car for my Volvo 240DL , too bad Volvo went upscale, great video Tommi 👍
You can still close the glass roof with the roller blind?
In my opinion it's the best bang for the money
What’s so infamous about the door handle?
Omg they removed the ski pass through?
Will be curious to see if the software has improved yet.
2022 and above models have much improved software
This is 2023 Tourmaline Blue Metallic Exterior color .Beautiful color.
If it qualifies for the tax incentive, then it would be a 200 mile range ~$30k SUV, which would be super appealing to a lot of people.
Which is why I set up a search alert to try and snag one in 2022. Still gets the 7,500 credit.
Not really. VW should have priced it at 33k.
@@CRVgarage Why would it do that? Demand far outstrips supply and there is no comparable competing vehicle at the price point. This isn't altruism...VW has to make money or there won't be a VW.
@@jghall00 because Chevy has the Equinox EV priced at 30k & goes 250mi.
@@CRVgarage It's not out yet, so no one has done a comparison. I think the Equinox is a smaller vehicle. The 62 kWh ID.4 is the same as the ID.4 models, sans the larger pack.
what's the hp of the high trim levels?
US base model is RWD 150 kW = 201 bhp
AWD (GTX?) model is 220 kW = 295 bhp
Ever heard of alcohol fuel cell?
Good evening, I bought my big standard id4 for £31000 with a 52kw battery which will do 192 miles on a full charge, I get 3.7 miles per kw. I have a question if I may, I can watch UA-cam on my phone and the sound comes through the speakers, why can I not watch UA-cam on the id4 screen ? Cheers and tally ho
unfortunately it doesn't work, but I downloaded UA-cam music (free of charge😜) for my ID 3 and can listen to the music on my USB stick in the car.
Well done Tommy. Curious how the 65 yr old and older crowds will adapt to these things. Will they fulfill the basic get in and go needs? Or will it be just a tad too new fangled for the older crowds to accept? Is EV the future, or is it a reset into disaster? Hope I never have to find out. lol
My dad is 71 and replaced his 2020 x5 w the Ioniq 5 and he loves it! He doesn’t drive long distances anymore, so at home charging has been really convenient, especially w the crazy gas prices.
My mother is 88 and had expressed interest in EVs!
I’ve owned a Taycan and an MME but would discourage her due yo the state of public charging. On the other hand, she drives
@@darrinv6798 If she doesn't do road trips, then an EV is perfect for her. The fact she could avoid going to the gas station or the hassle of frequent service maintenance make EV great for her.
I am 68 and just ordered one. No problem with any tech.
EVs are even better for seniors - no more stopping at gas stations to fill up (or forgetting to do so). With home charging, every day you start with a full 'tank'. Less concerns about maintenance, too.
Looks good. Been saying for a while EV's need their model-T moment. Until that time they're luxury playthings.
To be honest it's pretty cool but I think a better price would be somewhere around 34,000 not 37k
You're right. Equinox EV starts at 30k. If VW wants to stay competitive, they must reduce the price of ID4.
@@CRVgarage you mean the Equinox that isn't available for sale yet and is mage in China, vs the ID4 that's made in Tennessee and is shipping NOW..........
We can talk great prices all day long, but at the end of the day, stealerships will never let you get away with it. Until THAT issue is solved, i honestly don’t think price points hold much water. It’s really sad because I’m sure more people would give EV’s a try but dealerships with massive upcharges tagged along aren’t helping
In maryland the volkswagens are honoring MSRP if you reserved one online. If one is already on the lot from a previous person canceling their order then here is a markup. You should call your local VW and ask if they honor msrp on the ID4.
@@nujxad the ones around this area are $6000+ markup. It’s plain ridiculous
@@Deetroiter That's messed up. I hope they get stuck with a ton of unsold cars on their lot.
Tommy don’t give manufacturers such an easy pass with respect to shiny black plastic. If reviewers don’t challenge them, who else will they listen to?
I feel like these videos need to include answer to the 'when will this car actually be available?' question.
Hope they fixed the software...
Affordable EVs and affordable replacement EV batteries are key for the future or non future of the EVs for the masses.
80% plus EV’s will live there whole lives on there original battery pack. For the rest the after market will develop recon packs in just the same way it has for the Prius.
Low range, only 200 miles, poor regen performance due to rear wheel drive, no physical buttons it's a pass for me.
Will dealers actually sell them for MSRP?
Yes
Yes and no yes if you can find a dealer in your state that will do that or you would have to go out of state to find one that will and no don't wait till you pick the car up like I did the price went up three different times I ordered the car in September of 2021 I didn't get the car until a year and a couple of months later at that's the price🤬 they stuck with they would not or did not go down on the price but I had the car sitting there in the lot I wasn't about to wait another year to buy or wait on another car and they screwed me over like they just did so if you willing to drive and find that right dealer go for it here the number when I order the id.4 back in September of 21 it was $39,995 when I picked it up a year and 2 months later they charged me $45,000 and some change and they would not come off that price that was the MSRP on the car they would not honor the price of when I ordered the car.😡🤬
Nearly every review makes this sound like a great car. I’ll buy one when they fix the stupid rear window control and improve the software. Nearly every review mentions these as a real downside. VW- maybe you should hire some top software engineers from Apple.
What’s weird is Audi makes really good software love their infotainment setup but their parent company VW struggles weird as hell. Maybe a reason to consider the q4 etron instead if u can afford it
Software issue only concerns the older car. Mostly newer cars with version 3.0 fro 2022 are fine
Great value!
Did they give you any production goals or figures for next year?
They are producing 7,000 per month out of Chattanooga while only shipped 8,000 in 2022 so far.
Planning to make 90,000 in the US in 2023
Is it 62kWh useable, or gross?
Gross
Now if I can only find one built in the US…
Nice. Did they say if batteries were at least made in Georgia. Not going to sell if they don’t get the 7500.
The battery is made in Commerce. The question is where do the materials all come from.
He said in the beginning cells from the sk innovation U.S. plant in commerce GA. 👍🏻
4:20 Lots of reflections from that glossy display. I would prefer they made matte display.
Put a matte screen saver on it.
@@rzu7120 Yes I plan to do that when I receive my Skoda Enyaq (sister model of VW ID-4), but they should do this from factory. Glossy displays is an ill conceived fashion from aPple.
great job vw but they need to get rid of that capacitive UI crap and give us REAL TACTILE BUTTONS
If it does qualify for the 7500 dollar rebate that would certainly make it affordable.
Below 40k, with savings on efficiency, gas and maintenance, this is really like a 30k vehicle. Seems they are going ultra low in msrp for headlines and to get demand given software issues
@@robertt1336 The software issue only affect some older cars (2021 and older). 2022 cars mostly will have 3,0 version an are fine
This is a great Uber shuttle I can't wait until these are on the used car market two to three years from now
This still comes with 3 years free chatging?
Overall, the car is decent.., except for me, the screens, one is too small and the other just doesn’t flow, looks like they gave up half the way.
What about the Frunk?
unnecessary
Thats my dream car right there. i only drive my car like 100 miles per week but if i had that i might drive 200
Except for the software. ID4 owners are in an uproar, the car has become undriveable due to software glitches driving them nuts. Not ready for prime time, rushed to market unready.
Why this over the cheaper Bolt? Tax rebate, maybe!
If that's what you get for $37,495 before any federal + local incentives, that works out to be a lot of car for the money.
I have also noticed through watching the UA-cam that you Americans have a lot of software issues compared with us English I have no idea why that is.
The updates have not yet reached the Americans
Bought 2021 ID4 Pro last year, love it. After $7500 tax credit, $5000 NJ rebate and no sale tax. The final price is less than $26k.
How do you get out of paying sales tax?
@@ronniemullis8717 EV is exempt from sales tax in New Jersey.
@@user-vc4zs3ek5r Thanks, in NJ do they have any other fees that you have to pay for an EV? In GA there is a $200 yearly fee for road tax.
Twenty-five years ago this would have been a top trim rather than a base model.
At first glance I noticed that even though the 2023 was supposed to come with the new software version, it looked to me pretty choppy experience when you were switching between very simple menus. To me this altogether with not very ergonomic major controls like volume and temperature etc. that require too much attention to make adjustments, makes it a deal breaker to me. Very disappointed.
The whole tax credit thing is so confusing now. They should have delayed the implementation till more cars can qualify. We have put our electric car shopping on hold for now.
37k for basic trim ? Jesus they do know how to rip you off. I can get a 550 km range VW ID4 for 31500 USD (+sunroof, heating etc)
23 AWD can charge at 170 ? With 3.1 software? What BS VW pulling, seems VW doesn’t give a crap about their first id4 buyers. Update the software!!!!
This is a great effort by vw. Hopefully it will help lower costs
19" wheels on a "budget" car doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.
The UI/UX is still terrible, it would be an improvement to have a flip our DIN from best buy with neon lights. The window switche controls are also stupid and annoying. VW made a decent "platform" the rides and drives nice but botched the tech side so bad it kills the car for me.
thanks for the video... my main concern is the ongoing software issues... 40% of current owners are not happy at all with these issues.
The 2022 and beyond models come with v3.1 software, which addresses a lot of bugs from version 2.
@@rustydomino That’s still bad though.
VW’s response to software problems is that they can’t fix them in existing models. Just buy a newer model to get around it.
We don’t know that there aren’t other new software problems in 2023 models that VW won’t be able to fix and will just say it may be fixed in future model year models
I swear the VW software people are looking at 2008 smart phones for inspiration. When did seat symbols represent climate control? And no back lighting for the volume/climate control sliding controls? Piano black for the door handles? So they look like crap perpetually?
And why did VW ditch the much nicer dusk blue for this dull colour? Go back to dusk blue or cornflower blue!
Anyways, they just jacked up the overall price of the AWD statement package trim by 4500 bucks here in Canada so I'm not even looking at this car anymore.
Too bad VW did not deliver one base ID.4 for this price...
MG4 is a good cheap car
Not available in the U.S. and is in a smaller segment class.
