The Most Affordable AWD EV Is The New 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 AWD!

- If you're looking for an AWD EV that still has a federal tax credit and won't break the bank, VW has the answer for many of you with the new dual motor ID.4. If you get the full credit, VW's compact CUV will set you back around $18,000 less than a dual motor Model Y and a few grand less than Ford's Mach E. There's also 3 years of unlimited DC fast charging on the Electrify America network to sweeten the deal. Is the ID.4 perfect? No. But it is one of the best EVs in America right now, and it'll cost less than the "average" new car in America.

Yep... I think this is next EV for me. Nice package, not perfect, but it doesn't need to be. It's a great EV for the masses. Well done VW.
Definitely a great 2nd car
@@laloajuria4678 This will be my primary car and my 2014 Nissan Leaf will become my "second car".
Looks like a bloated Renault Capture and thats awful .
I went with this (Id4 gtx) so far really happy. I live in norway where charging network is really good, tho its cold here so range is ofteen effected. But I use it as family only car. Sure tesla Y is faster but id4 gtx 300 hp is no slouch , and I was looking for a 4x4 family EV with some towing capabilty and for this nothing beats it for the price. tesla y would add another 10k usd here. and I hope and belive id4 gtx will be cheaper and more relieable to run.
@@shanont The HP and torque on this thing is terrible compared to a Tesla or Mach e...not to mention the top speed. This comes in at a paltry 111mph... pathetic.
Alex was genuinely excited about this one. So am I.
This car is an incredible value. Doesn't scratch my car loving soul ... but an excellent example of VW engineering and prowess. Good video Mr. Alex.
Thank you Alex for reviewing vehicles. I think you are the best on UA-cam.
I love the way you shut down the “it’s not as good as anTesla” crowd. Keep up the great AonA content.
With a lot of lies🤣
Yeah so no super charging and 70 miles less range at a slower charge rate and crap interior. So shut down.
@@JonathanRootD
The interior does not look any better then Tesla. I've test driven both. Tesla add 1,000 extra for any other color and 2,000 more for red. As he said....go and buy a model Y.....shut down.
@@JonathanRootD Tesla owners are forever butt hurt that not everyone can afford or wants a Tesla. He stated facts it is cheaper to get this car versus a Tesla, and Tesla interior is pretty crappy, even Tesla owners say that along with terrible paint jobs.
@@dwilliams4558 Did you watch the Doug DeMuro video on the new Model S Plaid? Brand new car and the paint is either flaking off or was never applied correctly, on a car that costs 130k. It's just appalling.
I was glad to hear you say that you appreciated the sliding cover on the panoramic roof. Teslas have a lot going for them, but I've always felt they deserve more dings from reviewers for the glass roof without a cover.
Yup, it's 1 thing we changed
indeed Larry. you can forgive Tesla for a few quality issues and the like, but simple things like a cover should be a no brainer. if not a cover, surely smart glass would be a consideration. ive emailed Tesla about it, so far i got crickets.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smart_glass#Electrically_switchable_smart_glass
I think a cover is a nice option, but Tesla glass has full UV reflective properties. The VW is just a clear pane of glass. So on a day when the sun is directly above you, the Tesla allows you to leave it open and you don't feel the heat of the sun, while still being able to feel the complete openness and enjoy the glass roof. The VW you would always have it shut if the sun was out. And if you really need a cover, there's a cheap sunshade you can easily snap in on a Tesla. The perfect option would be if VW used Tesla's glass with their setup. At that point tho, you would never need the shade.
I have NEVER opened the cover on My Two Subaru's............Paul
@@TheAdventureAuto Not if you live in Florida, Arizona, or anywhere in the boiling hot deep South states, no matter what kind of glass used. I have two glass roof cars and they’re covered most of the time (especially in the summer).

This, but with the ergonomics and design language from the Mk7 Golf era. It would slay everything by just being a really good car instead of a futuristic design statement.
Great initial review, Alex. I've been looking forward to the introduction of the ID4 AWD. Living in the Puget Sound region our winters are typically wet rather than frozen but the nearby Cascades are a temptation for ski trips and AWD is highly recommended for trips on the "eastside" of the mountains where winter snow is more prevalent. At least on paper a RWD biased AWD configuration is ideal.
It's clear that VW has decided the ID4's target market consists of consumers who might otherwise find a conventional compact crossover an appealing choice rather than those looking for the scalding performance of a muscle car or even an exotic. Smart choice, I think. Especially with an MSRP with a tax incentive that makes the ID4 rival the price of a CR-V or RAV4. Like everyone else I'd like to see a bit longer range at least until public fast charging stations are more widespread. But I'm fortunate to live in a suburban home where a home charging system is an easy addition and well over 95% of my miles are spent on local streets or nearby destinations. I'm already seeing a few "First Edition" ID4s on the streets around here and I expect the AWD version will explode in popularity as long as the Federal tax credit is in place.
Did you buy one if so how is it working out for you
Like I said before Alex is the best car reviewer on the planet because he is unbiased and puts other cars in perspective so you know what competes with what.
As usual, great, informative review. Based on reviews and my test drive if a RWD id.4, I reserved an AWD ProS. When I spoke with my local dealer, they said that cars ordered will probably be delivered next May.
Thanks Alex, We need more options like the AWD ID4. Affordable!
Alex, your reviews, and your insight into how the vehicles apply to 'real world' never fail to deliver. Great job as always. I am in the process of researching my next vehicle and to be honest, had never given this vehicle any consideration but based you your feedback i will have to include it. Now if Hyundai and Kia would just increase the availability of their EV's I would consider them as well.
Agreed. I would however, wait for Kia or Hyundai to produce a vehicle in the model range I'm looking for. I'm not going to buy a Tesla and I'm not convinced that the VW group offer good enough reliability or after sales service but there styling is usually very good.
@@grantadamson3478 If I were going to buy a VW electric, I would wait for the release of the ID Buzz. Maybe it is the hippie in me, but this vehicle would be a blast to own.

Current price of Model Y long range AWD = $59K. Current price of VW ID.4 AWD Pro S = $49K - $7.5K Federal Tax Credit = $41.5K. $17.5K cheaper to get the ID.4. The ID.4 comes with 3 years of free charging, a trailer hitch, and a retractable cover over the glass roof. Looks like the ID.4 is a winner!
Alex - you are the best car reviewer out there! Thank you for your fast-talking, thorough, no-fluff evaluations!
Not having to pay for charging and getting that tax credit, AND getting that cover for the roof make this a very strong value. Plus great ground clearance, if you need that.
Not paying for charging is only convenient if there are chargers near where you travel - for me, they are significantly out of the way. You'd think the 3rd most populated state with a large tourism market would have more EA chargers available than it does. They aren't really near the interstates either in the most touristy parts of the state.
@@phlydude Most Walmarts will be getting them, and they are everywhere, least around here is the case.
Much better VW EV which got my interest. Very good coverage Alex 👍🏻
And better fit and finish for nearly 20k less! Either way, more choice is better for us consumers.
I’ve seen the id4 and I love it. In a model 3 owner for 3 years almost.
This was the first video I've watched from you and was immediately impressed by your candor, down home quality and technical knowledge. Well done.
I ordered one of these (AWD version) in May. largely based on some of the reviews but your review and that of Redline convinced me. I then drove the 2WD model and was sold over again. My AWD ID.4 won't arrive until late January early February looking forward to ownership. Thank you for a review I can use. This vehicle should serve us well here in the Southern Colorado and Northern New Mexico foothills and mountains
Another great review by Alex. My go to place when looking at cars.
I drove one last week I really like it. It's a quality vehicle and drives great.
Good review as I am considering the ID4
I've watched several of your reviews now, Alex, and this car would not normally be my choice. But that you are so incredibly comprehensive, I watched it all the way. Again. :-) You simply outpace all the reviewers I've bounced between on UA-cam. I have more to watch, as I think EV will be more me than hybrid (future-proofing). But you are the guy I'm coming to first. Thank you so much.
I can always count on Alex to be the voice of reason. A certain UA-cam channel that centers around EVs and Tesla news (won't say who) absolutely slammed the ID.4 for not being as good as a Tesla. As Alex might say, "No shit, Sherlock!"
Was it Now You Know? They had a horrible Model Y vs ID.4 comparison
the actual elephants in the room might be the ioniq5 and EV6. With their interior space and charging speed are possibly better options
I like them both too, but I'm not aware of them starting to make them here in the US. I think SK has some batteries to sell them though soon, but Ford and VW get them first IIRC.
Aren’t they more expensive, closer to Tesla range?
@@brittgayle467 they should be somewhere in between. However, they offer tesla like specs.
@@sprockkets Good luck getting Hyundai dealers supporting these electric cars.
@@tonys9413 Especially Hyundai dealers outside of California. Good luck finding one in the Midwest.
While I can appreciate goal behind the leaning in the power, it should always be something you can override with a Sport mode. It’s so easy to allow you to choose how much off-pedal/one-foot driving you want and how much snort you want off the line. Yet pretty much no one allows that configurability. Chevy did something similar with the Spark EV and it’s pretty much my only gripe with the car.
I completely agree. After driving a model three for three years I sold it last month, and believe it or not I’m actually looking forward to the idea of a car with less instant acceleration, as I found it inconveniently difficult to provide a super smooth ride for my wife who sometimes got just a bit motion sick on a long winding road that we have to take several times a week.
But to your point, make it a user configurable setting. I think the biggest thing I’ll miss about my Tesla as compared to whatever EV I get next will be the software updates. Meaning, who knows if VW will add this configurable setting in the future or not.
Glad to hear that VW seems to be serious about producing EVs.
why shouldnt they be? but toyota draggin the chain !😏
I just brought my ID4 Pro S AWD home today. So far it’s estimating ~300 miles of range, but I didn’t take the highway today 🤷♂️😸
I have one on order. There's a lot of confusion about the actual ground clearance (and I actually need it for where I live). I know I'm an internet stranger, but if you measure and share the actual ground clearance with me, I'll send positive energy your way :D

Alex should replace John Davis on motorweek when he chooses to retire
Finally, somebody said it. "Just because it has a plug does not make it a Tesla Model Y competitor". Getting a little tire of some/most of the other reviewers comparing EV to a Tesla.
Well what is the gold std otherwise? The Bolt?
I agree, though in this case I think there _will_ be cross-shopping with the Model Y. People who need the longer range, or like quick acceleration won't, but the two are similar enough in size and features that many will find either one acceptable. I know I would.
More reviewers need to review this as a Utility Vehicle....Same as You would review a Forester.......Too many are trying to treat this thing as a sports car............Paul
The gauge screen that moves with the steering column is an excellent idea, unlike Tesla who chopped off the top half of the steering wheel to deal with the blocked view issue.
That shot of the Hercules turning at 4:41 made the video even better! Beautiful shot.
I have ordered this exact car...can't wait for it to come. Love the light gray interior. The ID.4 will be the second EV for my household. With all the complaints about the price of gas...these cars are becoming more attractive every day. The fact that they are fun to drive is a fantastic bonus!
We ordered the red one after we already have a first edition in white. Will have two id4 in family. The black or white interiors always bothered me on Tesla option.
Model Y starts at $63,990 without the gimmick of the gas savings in the small print. Add 2000 for the red paint, 1000 for the hitch and you are looking at a total of $67,000 before any destination charges.
Full decked out ID4 your looking at $51,000. 67 - 51 = $16,000 now add the $7,500 in tax credits if you qualify and you are looking at $23,500 in savings.
At least VW know how to builds vehicles. If you see the gaps in any tesla you will see that they have asymmetric gaps.
It's too bad that VW chose to give the ID4 such infuriatingly poor HVAC and infotainment controls to try to seem futuristic. Otherwise a nice product.
At least they updated UI responsiveness. But yes, poor first showing.
The IDs infotainment are decent and well designed. Was slow at the beginning but are ok after the updates and likely to be even improved....
Death to buttons!!
We live in 100 degrees ca summer and the AC was just fine. And Apple CarPlay works. Don’t need more than that for infotainment. Did you speak from own experience? Or someone’s comment/review?
Just moved to California and gas prices are killing me. I have a 2019 CRV that I love, but looking to upgrade to a hybrid, PHEV, or straight up EV. Looking at the RAV4 prime, 2022 Hyundai Tucson (hybrid or PHEV) and now this. Thanks!
Great car with great price reviewed by great reviewer.
I wholeheartedly agree this is a very important "market vehicle". Still predominantly a city/close suburb car but a definite move forward. Very attractive performance/ range/ utility/ price package. Good job VW!
Good review, I'll be getting my ID4 this coming weekend.
👍👍👍 that was the true honest advice to purchase new EV for everyone 😝 thanks Alex 💋
We're looking in this range and this is a very useful video. Lots on info and context. Good job. Thanks.
Love this review as I am looking at this car and Mach E; it is the pricing that concerns me the most .
Thanks for talking about the value up front! It is amazing what a great value this car is and some reviewers gloss over that.
I'm very curious about the ground clearance in this car. You mentioned 8.8 inches and another reviewer said 6.7 inches. In the videos it sure doesn't look like 8.8 inches. What's going on with this stat?
I asked Google to find the **official** ground clearance for this model. It is not mentioned at all on the VW (U.S.) web site. I've found official VW press-release web site with a 6.3 inch ground clearance for the RWD model.
Yeah Forbes stated that it is 6.7in. 8.8 would be more than the Rav4 prime (8.3in) which really doesn't look to be the case.
I ordered ID.4 awd pro last evening. I like ID.4 ground clearance and usable trunk space, and similar drive dynamics as gas small SUV.
the power ceiling cover is great, I'm at a loss as to why the Model Y and the MME don't have it.
My very first electric car! Nice video Alex.
Eagerly awaiting your review of the Chatanooga 2023 refresh! ID.4 (Pro S AWD) just may be my Goldilocks EV....
Great video and demo of the AWD. We have a Kings Red RWD Pro S w/Gradient ordered with arrival from Germany estimated first couple weeks of January. We're really excited.
I ended up buying an Atlas Cross Sport a few months back because VW had not produced the AWD id. 4 yet. Even though I love the space, handling and looks of the car, I may have to consider trading it in. The 2.0 even with awd is just too slow!
we used to have the Tiguan with a 2liter engine, I can't imagine on the Crossport.
We switch to the Atlas 3.6 VR6 Rline.
@@tallalmoshrif6643 the 2.0 in the Atlas is tuned up a lot more than the one in the Tiguan. About 36 more HP and I think about 40 more ft lbs of torque. But it's no race car.
This seems to be a real competitor to normal vehicles such as a Subaru Outback. Similar form factor and after incentives similar price.
I have an OBXT but am waiting patiently for an EV that is a true replacement. I’d like to have 8-9 inches of ground clearance and AWD even if it meant I couldn’t go 400 miles of range without charging. I’d settle for 250.
@@pilot1226
It's very different and much larger, but the Rivian R1T and R1S probably are the most offroad-capable EVs right now, have 14.5" ground clearance, and 300-400miles of range.
There's also the teased Subaru Soltera (EV) which will likely fit your needs perfectly, but it's specs are unknown at this time and it won't go on sale for another year.
This is no more or less and "off-roader" than a CX5, CRV or 4Runner
@@basementstudio7574 I think you meant Rav4. 4runner 10x better offroading then any of these including ID4.
@@pilot1226 Sounds like you've been waiting for this. 8+ inches of ground clearance and 250 mile range with AWD. I'm sure others will match that soon.
I agree with you and Mike K. This car just makes sense.
I'm split between getting this and Ioniq 5. I hope Hyundai makes it's pricing completive with the ID.4. I like the styling and much faster charging on the Ioniq 5, but I like the ground clearance on the ID.4.
One more factor to consider is the local dealer’s commitment to EVs. See how receptive your dealers to servicing your car; in my area the Hyundai dealer is not on the EV frontline. Even though EVs require much less maintenance, every small electrical glitch will require some attention from your dealer if you can’t deal with it yourself.
Ioniq and EV6 pricing looks to be a little more than the Mach e looking at Korean market and first edition prices. ID.4 is without a doubt the most affordable mainstream EV you'll be able to get without dropping to limited city bound subcompact car.
Ioniq5 has 800V system (only the Porsche Taycan is similar) and V2L, where you can power your home or accessories with the car, as well as a lot more features.
VW is a mediocre effort from a company that invested billions into EVs. At the base price, the ID4 is a good EV. Anything more than that, it doesn't make sense compared to the limited competition.
In a couple years, it will be obsolete.
@@eto2352 the Kia EV6 also has it but it's not like the charging curve on the ID.4 is bad, neither are really more feature rich though they are more premium. Ioniq isn't nearly as s practical as EV6 or ID.4 tough. Also lol you can it mediocre but reality is its a much more meaningful effort since it's a lot more affordable. You're paying luxury price for Ioniq/EV6 so compare it to Audi not ID.4. EV6 is a good car don't get me wrong but that's a very disingenuous argument you are making.
@@KeeperOfTheSevenKeys. Kia/Hyundai are not luxury EV cars. The Ioniq5 and ID4 both come in around $45k USD.
The ID4 ergonomics and human interface is a mess.
The Hyundai/Kia 400+800W system is far superior as is the ability to V2L gives far more flexibility to owners. The entire safety suite offered, as well as superior ergonomics. They are at the forefront of EV technology.
VW is simply not a good value. It may be affordable to those that want a VW and it's not a bad EV but it's not in any way outstanding and many ways, inferior to even VW's other ICE vehicles.
These interior room measurements are a bit hard to believe based on my own test drive experience with them.
Yes, model Y does have a bit more knee room than id4, but definitely not 3.5" of a difference. Furthermore, I didn't feel that the rear seat head room of model Y is 1 inch more. It is limited by that huge cross bar behind 2nd row. I'm 6'2, I can sit in the back of model y if the seatback is straight up, and with that glass roof, my hair would brush the glass roof but my head is not hitting. If I reclined the rear seat to similar angle of id4, the back of my head just bumped into that huge cross bar. Although id4's rear seat back cannot adjust, it's designed to a pretty comfortable angle, and the seat angle and seat bottom length are both better provide better thigh support. So, I think we cannot only look at the manufacturer numbers, God knows how they've been measured, but definitely not with the same standard.
I agree, sitting in the back of the ID4 it didn't feel as small as the numbers suggest.
Sorry you had to go to TN. EV competition needs to get going!
Tennessee is a beautiful if covidy state .
id wait another year or 2 for some real inovations in EVs to start happening, whats the hurry?
11:36 Alex isn't a quibble but a brilliant idea of reducing two fewer buttons. The rear window switch has the same concept as the switch for the outside rearview mirrors. There's only a toggle switch to control L, R, Fold, & Heated outside rearview mirrors. So, in the same concept, there's one switch to control F & R windows. It's KISS - Simplicity not, complexity applied to the full extend!
Also, the use of the front windows is probably 80% of the time the switches are used, so maybe 20% or less will it be a big deal to lower the rear windows from the driver's seat.

Excellent review. This car is a step in the right direction for our next and first ev purchase. It's important for me to know if the large center screen in vehicles like this can be turned off completely. When driving at night it is so much more comfortable on the eyes not to have a big light source in the cabin.
Yeah, you can turn it off. There's an off bottom. You can also dim it
I can't see dealing with dealing with that interface to do things like adjust the climate . But then again There's no way I'd deal with the Teslas controls . Ppl really just need id3....too bad for America.
@@laloajuria4678 please don't tell me what I need. My family of 4 with a dog and luggage for a road trip will not fit in an ID.3.
I always enjoy watching your reviews. Great job! Can you add one more spec for the back seat: shoulder room? I think it's very important for families that have small kids using car seats. It would be interesting to know how much room you have left compared to other cars when you have car seat installed.
Where can I place an order for the ID5? Like this EV for the money 💰. Great video.
Great review - thanks.
Right now I have a Bolt and love it... but the battery issue.
So I'm looking at options and the two highest on my list are the AWD ID4 and the AWD Aptera. Very, very different vehicles.
The Aptera could potentially never need to be plugged in (aside from road trips) given I drive far less than 40 miles per day on average. And during road trips the 1000 mile (or even the 600) is great. If congress passes one of the motorcycle/3 wheel EV tax credit bills on the docket then the Aptera as I've specced it out would be far cheaper. Without it they're about the same price. The Aptera is far more efficient with almost triple the miles per kWh expected. The insurance would be cheaper on the Aptera because it's technically a motorcycle. The Aptera is far quicker than the ID4, 0-60 in ~3s.
However it has major caveats. It's only a 2 seater, while still being quite wide and long. It's not actually out yet, best bet is that it'd be >2 years before I took delivery while the ID4 could be in my driveway early-mid next year. And the Aptera wouldn't be quite as good on the light off-roading I occasionally do, or during the fun weather that Colorado throws at us, even with the 'off-roading' package increasing its ground clearance. Getting the Aptera fixed would be far harder than getting the ID4 fixed.
Both are bigger than the Bolt, which I'm not nuts about. I like how small the Bolt is, my first car was a tiny 1986 Subaru GL hatchback, I've always liked smaller cars. All the other small EVs have crap range. Since it'll be my only car it has to be fairly practical. That's why I like hatchbacks so much, they can be small and still carry a bunch of people/stuff.
IDK what do you all think? Gotta wait for GM to decide for sure what they're doing with the Bolt. If they'll give me a good price for the buyback I'll take it, but I may just wait for the battery swap.
Price update up here in Canada. Model Y is 77k, top spec AWD ID4 is 58k less 5k govt rebate, Ioniq 5 AWD Ultimate 60k less 5k rebate , Q4 AWD mid trim 65k. I would put the Tesla last in my shopping list.
Touch sensitive controls are one of the worst trends in automotive design. They are too hard to use while driving.
And they are particularly bad in the ID.4
I use a pencil taped to my hand.
@@rockwjz Yeah, I was a little surprised that Alex didn't mention any concerns about the touch controls or about the infotainment system -- other commentators have called out the infotainment system for being laggy.
@@M1911jln he did mention it !
Great review Alex. Like this shorter time format. I hope this vehicle proves to be reliable, as it is a very compelling choice compared to the typical EV’s on the market currently.
