In this video, I replace the valve cover gasket on my Chevy Cruze. This one was leaking oil down on my exhaust manifold because it was old and brittle.

REMEMBER. You want to remove all gasket material with scotch bright pad BEFORE putting the valve cover back on. AND torque all the bolts down to a specific spec. Not just "tight" this will ensure a proper seal and no leaks

If you are going to do this I strongly suggest going to a Chevy dealer and buying a new cover for $85 which comes with a gasket instead of replacing only the gasket. This is because the PCV is molded into the cover and will go bad. Also, apply a small amount of gasket sealant at the 2 seams of the block on the left end, front and back, as the Chevy repair bulletin suggests.

    • @Mechone11
      @Mechone11 Рік тому +1

Agree with sealant, its not the PVC in the valve cover ,PVC is in the intake it fails and requires new intake or mod. A failed PVC in intake causes pressrize air from turbo into valve cover ripping diaphram.Diaphram opens to pass blow by gases to PVC .

I have a 2012 cruze and it is a constant money pit. There is always something going wrong. I have had to replace the Valve Cover twice. The valve cover cover gasket. The water outlet twice. The Turbo oil feed line. The coil pack along with other things. The trunk release button on the car works off and on, most of the time I have to use the remote to open the trunk. The remote start works off and on. All are easy fixes but WOW !!!!!!! does it ever end. Your videos are great by the way.

You don't use an impact driver on the valve cover bolts. You will destroy them. The correct torque specification is 71 inch pounds.

@@aeroracer4875best to use a torque wrench that’s in 71 inch pounds. Cheap ones go for $30 while more expensive torque wrench’s go for $150-$200. Always stop when you start to feel pressure and resistance reason being is you can snap that bolt in half causing more hours of a headache. Hope this helped!

Mechanic found it back in April, replaced the gasket, it leaked again within a month, took it back they replaced it again under warranty for free. Now it's at it again and I'm pretty sure the warranty has run out. You mentioned your 2012 did it for months? Worth replacing it again? Chad you're lifesaver for many it seems. I have the 2015 1.4 cruze
I had my oil changed last Summer and the dealership decided to "diagnose" a small leak. (Also ripped me off for some filters, but that's another story) They came back with oil cooler leak and camshaft actuator seals. The estimate fir labor alone 🤦‍♀️. Then they had all these "extra" parts they claimed they would have to replace instead of reusing. The mark up on parts too 🤯.
I can do the actuator seals myself, I just haven't gotten to them yet. I have a feeling that the other leak is just what you replaced in the video. I can fix that!
My engine light came on a couple weeks ago, I tested it and got the codes. It was running lean. So I replaced the spark plugs, then had to replace the coolant overflow hose since the old one decided to snap. I must have knocked it. Thank goodness they revamped the model I bought. Then I changed the purge valve. All by myself for less then $200 in parts. #chickswhofix🛠🧰
I got another oil change at a different dealership. All they said was like had a oil leak. 🙄duh.

Fantastic video. I gave it a thumbs up. The only thing is if someone has not mentioned it it the tightening of the valve cover bolts. The torque specs needs to be carefully considered due to stripping the head. Torque specs are 71 INCH lbs not 71 ftlbs. Just a friendly FYI. Thx again awesome video

Just had an oil leak on my 2011Chevy Cruze with 71000 miles in the same place repaired by the dealer. They replaced the valve cover. It took 3 tries to stop the leak. It looked to me like there was pressure rather than crank case vacuum because the oil was also seeping out the oil fill hole. I have seen on UA-cam that there are two PCV valves on the Cruze that could have caused the problem but was assured by the service technician that the problem was only on the valve cover.

It's recommended to just replace the valve cover with a new updated OEM one. You can actually get it from the dealer for around $100 with the gasket as there is supposedly a flaw in the diaphragm. The leaky gasket was throwing codes P0171 and P0420.

Put black rtv gasket maker around the metal like washer sleeve inside the cover where the bolts go through and put the o ring on the rtv so it doesnt fall off and then put some rtv on the engine where it divides the timing chain cover and engine to seal it off and then reinstall the cover.

No pcv or PVC?? I would also recommend to clean about an inch below the value cover engine side. I recommend this just to verify that there is no more leaks afterwards, because you will still get burnt oil smell from the residual oil on the engine or mixed with dirt falliing on the exhaust manufold; thus getting the lady of the house all riled up that you didn’t fix the problem... or so is my opinion. Just a suggestion. Further, unless the shop manual or what ever guide is being used I would still use some silicone to hold the gasket and put on the engine side. That is to be absolutly sure there are no more leaks, and sometimes there is a weak spot that might need some help. (more internet search to find the weak spot)

I DO NOT recommend replacing your valve cover gasket UNLESS you just bought a NEW valve cover and damaged the old or had to take it off recently because the valve cover itself has a built in pcv valve which needs to be replaced often when you hear a hissing sound caused by a failed pcv valve. When you buy a new valve cover it comes with a new gasket and screws already attached and a pcv valve. If you just replace only the gasket it will be just a matter of time before you have to take it all apart again when it fails and start over with a new one. If you do this yourself be very carefully not to over tighten your bolts because you will strip them out and cause further damage to the engine and it will start leaking and oil will be all over the back of your car when you start driving. Then you will have to start all over again with a new one and tap your screw hole that you over tightened. My car is a Chevy Trax with 190,000 miles on it and I've replaced mine about twice a year.

i replaced my gasket but it still leaked and code P0171 came up. does it matter if i oiled up the gasket before putting the cover back on? i didn't see you oil your gasket.

Apparently they redesigned the valve cover to deal with a PCV issue and oil leaks.

When you pulled off the cover, you should have replaced the whole thing and saved your self some time for when the poorly designed pcv valve goes out.

Isn't the PCV valve in the intake manifold? (If you have the 1.4 there is technically a second PCV right before turbo) I think you mean pressure control diaphragm... 😉 Good call on whole cover replacement though.

One thing I noticed no torque specs for the bolts I think it is 71ftpounds and the sequence in the steps to start from. great video for sure. Changing out mine today same place it is leaking as yours.

@@ChadWilliamsFixesAll how long did this take you? Also, my sister in law's Cruze is leaking oil from the VVT solenoids. I think they might need replacement. Just replacing the VVT gaskets might not be enough. I figured I might as well do the valve cover gasket too and want to know how much time I will need.

Before taking the plastic cover off you need to drain the engine oil or nah? Srry if it seems like a dumb question. Still a noob when it comes to learning about cars. I just wanna make sure I take care of my vehicle well. :)

Did you use any gasket sealant or something similar? Also can you drive it right after you change the part or do you have to wait ?

Hey bud. Quick question. I had oil what looks like coming out of the spark plug boots at the bottom. Is that just the valve cover gasket or is that a head gasket too?

When the gasket was put did you use any type of glue? I didn't see any but just verifying
