    Had a P0106 code and check engine light caused by a vacuum leak from the integrated PCV valve. I followed your procedure, no problems but I had to use some nylon pry tools to break the seal loose to get the old valve cover over off. I disconnected the negative terminal of the battery for about 15 minutes to clear the check engine light, started it up and it idled smooth again and no more vacuum leak. Check engine light remained off. Thanks for the easy to follow video.

    Nice video. The illustrations are good with no distractions. I will be performing this on a 2011 Cruze. I was told by the dealer that normally the intake manifold and crank case seals can be a part of the poorly designed systems in these cars and should be replaced the same time to assure a complete job. I am hoping for just the valve cover with its flawed pvc valve.

    Thank you for posting this, I am about to perform this on a 13 Volt. Your video is the first one I've found to mention the Volt for this repair. It has the same exact problematic valve cover, but I'm thinking since the engine is not always used in the Volt this is a much less common failure. The car I have in particular has 128k on it and by the lifetime mpg number, 35mpg, the engine has been used quite a lot more than the average Volt.
    On my car it won't set ready for O2 or catylst so it isn't passing emissions, nor is it setting a check engine light. I'm hoping this is the fix.
    Your explanation of the use of RTV was the last little unknown piece to me so now I have full confidence to do this job.

    • @suitersautomotive
      @suitersautomotive 6 років тому

      Also the dealership wanted $500 to perform this exact same job! The part is only about $50!

    • @suitersautomotive

      @@MrSubaru1387 , it went in without much of a hitch. The wire harness is a little more extensive on the Volt (shocker), but it went right in. The engine is noticeably quieter now.
      Before my delta between short term and long term fuel trim was as high as 10 and now it's no more than 4 so this is definitely a positive improvement. The engine definitely did a quick and rather audible re-learn of itself there first time it was fired up with the new valve cover.
      Now to see if it sets ready so I can get this thing registered.

    • @suitersautomotive
      @suitersautomotive 6 років тому

      I went for and a 30 mile drive last night and now it set catalyst ready. Now I'm down to just O2 sensors not being ready which means it will pass emissions in AZ as you are allowed one to not be ready.
      I'm taking her in tomorrow!

  • @sprnklrboy

    I replaced the entire cover and gasket as an assembly on a 2014 Cruze (GM Factory parts) and I got literally a spray of oil at the left front corner just in front of the arch on top of the engine passenger side. I removed and double checked that the gasket was properly in place. Torqued as in your video etc. Placed a GoPro and light under the hood and when accelerating oil is squirting all the way to the passengers side fender well. Should there be really high pressure inside the valve cover? The part number supplied by the Buick dealer was 2519-8877 and they said it was the same for the Cruze. Is it possible that there is a slight fit difference?

    Installed the same valve cover with gasket and had no issues initially. I had 3 fasteners on the new valve cover that were pretty loose and started to leak oil. I cleaned up the oil and retightened the fasteners that were loose. I was wondering if I will need to take off the new valve cover and new gasket and clean up oil that might have spilled inside under the valve. I just cleaned the outsides where I saw oil leaking, as well as removing the foil coils and cleaning up around those as well.

    I hope you read this and respond please! My 15 encore had the new valve cover replaced earlier this year by the dealer. The gasket is leaking on the outside for sure. Now there is oil all over the spark plug boots and tubes filled! I’m assuming it’s leaking on that inner portion of the gasket (the part that goes around coil pack). Since there are no plug tube seals do you think that’s how the oil is getting down into the tube wells? Thanks.

    is it really a small amount of rtv in those two corners? I feel like the front side of the valve cover has such a weird spot unless you put in a decent amount it ends up creating a gap where seal won't meet properly.

    What about the valve cover on the 1.8 liter chevy sonic? My sonic has 130k miles and I just noticed it was starting to leak around the front edge of the valve cover and around spark plug number 3. I replaced just the gasket which cost me $45 from autozone. Thank you for your helpfulll video!

      Haven't worked on a newer 1.8 Ecotec. Not sure if they have an integrated pcv or not. I'd assume they do as well though.

    • @ryanchristensen1799
      @ryanchristensen1799 6 років тому

      MrSubaru1387 i think it does have an integrated pcv valve because when I looked inside the valve cover there was this long rectangular box that oil started coming out of it when I turned it over. Also the pcv tube connects directly to it. What is the issue with this design? I didn't have any check engine codes either.

    • @MrSubaru1387
      @MrSubaru1387  6 років тому +1

      On the 1.4 the PCV diaphragm tears and causes an intake leak. Outside unmetered air inters the intake through the valve cover. The PCV isn't serviceable alone, so the valve cover is replaced as an assembly.

      MrSubaru1387 1.8 must not have had this issue, a Google search didn't turn up anything but for the cruze 1.4 l it sure did!

    Check the bolts on your replacement valve cover. If they don't have the rounded tips like the factory one, knock them out and use the factory ones, you will never get the square ended bolts all to line up to the holes. The bolts are in tubes, put RTV under the washer under the bolthead, the orings won't stop all the oil. Don't buy the cheapest valve cover like I did, $43, and maybe it will bolt right up.

      Just finished! Seems to be working like it should (no more rough idling), though I think I failed to fully re-seat the ignition coil. Now when I have the key in the ignition and the systems turned on (engine still off) there is a electrical whine coming from beneath the engine cover that I've never heard it do before.
