    I used to get mad whenever the school tried to pressure me into grabbing a milk at lunch because I was never going to drink it because I was lactose intolerant and if I was going to use up my small dairy level, it was going to be for something more special than plain old milk. Besides, my mom would would fill me up a bottle of juice or water for me to take to school to drink at lunch. They gave me a bunch of you don't have a doctor's note nonsense. Now that I'm older, I realize something even more ridiculous than people trying to force me to grab a milk I wasn't going to drink. The milk came with school lunches, if you wanted water, you had to pay money outside of the lunch. Which is ridiculous since all the kids were being taught water was the healthiest drinking option.

    This series could be called "The Food You Think You Know"
    edit: I feel like my original wording wasn't great (so I changed it a little), but I still think it'd be a cool title, or the past tense "The Food You Thought You Knew" that @Cat Game suggested. I think TFYTYK ("tiffy tick") has some cool future potential.

    Something that doesn't come up often in these theories, that I would like to see more of, is cost. In this one, alternatives are given to milk for calcium and vitamin D. Is it cheaper to get the supplements or the milk? I suppose one big theory episode on whether we should all just be consuming supplements and Matrix mush (everything the body needs) or keep eating food would be better. Is it possible to just live off of supplements and what would that do to a person? Is it more cost effective, are there any health risks, has any food theory videos been made about this topic? (Fairly new to the channels, still working my way through them)

      That is something that I have been wondering for years and would be really interested in. There are times where I don't feel like eating. Eating is such a chore and do it because I obviously have to to survive. If I could just jug some pills that would be cool.

    • @bebopjelli2
      @bebopjelli2 2 роки тому +24

      @@MilwaukeeWoman Well, those extra calories are an added bonus. You can find the natural milk with fewer/no additives as well. So it may be more worth while to get the milk which has more than just one nutrient. I'm also not sure of what it takes to process supplements so that may be a factor as well. With milk, it's a matter of raising the cows, getting the milk, and a bit of processing for sterilization, separating cream, packaging, and I'm sure something else I'm not aware of. I would guess it's easier just to get milk.

If so than you’d need to have a lot and I mean A LOT of sugar to make someone addicted now if we want to expand the ingredients list than we could add in some actual drugs like coke.

Sometimes I do pay the price later, but not always. In moderation, I can consume dairy without any problems. And they make the cows pregnant over and over again... because that's how mammals produce milk, for their young. This is why dairy cows generally have short lives, because being constantly pregnant takes a toll on the body. Their young are destined to have the same lives they did, or to be fattened up and slaughtered for eating. 25% of global land use, land-use change and forestry emissions are driven by beef production, including conversion of forests in the Brazilian Amazon. The system is absolutely horrifying and because of that, I also stopped eating dairy after first stopping eating meat. Because the dairy and meat (beef) industries support each other and effectively even if you stop eating beef you are still supporting eating meat if you consume dairy. Unless you fricking own that cow and milk it yourself, maybe.

      Salty is one of the main tastes our brain chases alongside savory and sweet, which is why umami is so often chased when cooking. It creates the strongest response and can even be addicting, which is unfortunate because the food presented to us that offers the most of these tastes arent exactly great for us....
      Also salt was historically very popular in ancient societies even being on par with things like gold and other precious materials when it comes to value. Since alot of ancient societies lived around fresh water rivers rather than salt water bodies, or just hadnt discovered salt extraction from saline water, it had to be mined and being incredibly useful in many important parts of society, from flavoring and preserving food, to being used in construction, salt became highly desired and thus highly priced. Of course in the case of places like Japan, salt, while popular, was more common since they had discovered salt farming using water from the sea and thus was less valuable. With the advances in food preservation, overtime salt would become less valuable and with the advent of refrigeration lost pretty much all value since we could simply get things like meat really cold instead of dehydrating them into rock hard chunks of Salty, edible meat chunks.

    Um, I drank milk into my childhood and teens and my bones are thicker and stronger than both my male and female family members. Yes, there was a point where I couldn't handle lactose, but over time my body adapted to it and I can drink/eat lactose without any problems. Also, substituting milk for veggies is insane. cows can break down plant matter and turn it to milk, while human stomachs can't break down the cell wall of vegetable, since are ancestors only ate plants when they couldn't get meat and it was mostly root vegetables. Easiest way to get calcium is from meat, not vegetables. We may be omnivorous, but are stomachs have evolved to handle and eat meat more. Btw all those vegetables you mentioned are absolutely horrible for you, Beans are known to give digestive problems and harm you kidneys and brussel sprouts! Not even my guinea pigs eat that, even online it says that brussel sprouts can lead to bladder stones. Are you trying to harm people? Broccoli is also hard to digest. Just because something has more calcium than milk, doesn't mean that it's better for you.

So the children who were lactose intolerant didn’t feel well and no one could figure out why. So they just kept shoving milk down their throats until they died. And with that, all lactose tolerant babies survived and here we are, drinking a liter per person per day (not really but I have seen my dad go through a 2L carton in 3 days which is pretty insane)

    I never really believed in the milk makes you stronger/taller thing. My main reason to drink milk is that it tastes great with cereal and baked goods, and I'm going to get as much dairy in me as I can before my body stops producing lactase. My brother and mom are both lactose intolerant (not that it stops them, they take lactase supplements to avoid the side effects) and knowing my luck I'll probably wind up being lactose intolerant too. So I'm gonna eat as much dairy as I can before it becomes necessary to take a supplement if I want a cheese sandwich.

      Yes as an archeologist I was thinking the same, milk was much safer to drink than regular water in the past, the other option was alcoholic beverages and the milk doesn't have the effect of making you, you know.. tipsy or drunk. Also there are different varieties of yogurts with natural bacteria that are fermenting in it, one example is Lactobacillus bulgaricus which is natural pro biotic and extremely healthy for digestion, there are other types in different regions in the world that have different benefits. Also in few thousands of years human bodies may become even better adjusted and adapted to extract more nutrients from milk products if humans continue consuming them.

At the age of 17 I had to get a test of my bone density, according to the doctor, my bones were dense enough to likely catch a small bullet (like .22 caliber). Of course the doc never suggested I was bullet proof. But all that said, I'm 35 now and I can't drink a lot of milk. Thanks to this video it now makes sense why I can't handle it as I did as a kid.

      This is why, when encountering people with "wrong" opinions, the priority should be finding out WHY they have those opinions instead of just pushing your own. Often, people have done their own research and have made judgements based on their own circumstances. Edward, you are right. While supplements might be easier, they aren't a replacement for natural methods (aka: food). The reason vitamin D supplementation is so often recommended is because 1) The vast majority of people are deficient in it due to working indoors, season (winter vs summer), geography/sun position (more Vitamin D at the equator than in far north or south locations, and dietary changes (modern processed food vs ancestral diet) 2) You don't get much Vitamin D from food, even enriched food, Finland for instance has a program where all kinds of food are enriched with vitamin D (see number 1) and they have had to double the amount of enrichment in those foods. Sun exposure is the best way to get vitamin D.
      Other than Vitamin D there is no real need to supplementation if one has a proper diet, but that's difficult due to were people live, food expenses, supply, etc...if you live in the middle of the Midwest U.S. you aren't getting fresh fish so your main source of Omega fatty acids is absent and thus why people supplement (hemp seed is a good source too but that's only a recent source).

      @@hermaeusmora2945 well said my friend. Taking a daily walk in the middle of the day or simply walking to your destination might help even in not so sunny places and hey walking.

    • @xDarkTrinityx
      @xDarkTrinityx 2 роки тому +6

      Yes, natural ways to get it are better than supplements. (Thanks Dr Mike) but, if you are deficient then having that extra boost can help. For those of us not near the equator who have less daylight hours in the winter as well as getting obscenely cold outside, it becomes very difficult to just "go outside for some sun" when we're working most of those daylight hours. Very common here in MN to have vitamin D deficiency.
      Added bonus, the depo provera form of birth control can also decrease calcium levels(or deplete? unsure of the correct effect) so guess who's on supplements.... this gal.

I haven't gone back to drinking dairy milk since then and now only use almond milk with my protein shakes.

And the truth is that all other plant-based "milks" don't taste anything like actual animal milk, so it's not really replaceable in that sense. And it's not just that milk itself is tasty, but all dairy products are really good! I mean I couldn't imagine myself living without cheese 🤤🤤

    I heard lactose, intolerant people can drink breastmilk, and I feel like if that’s the case, we should definitely just switch to human breastmilk. There’s no reason that we stop drinking it at a young age we could just keep drinking it in adulthood, and we’d be more healthy than we would otherwise, of course if I’m wrong on it being healthy for adults, go ahead and correct me but since it’s designed for humans to drink, I’d assume that we’d still be fine

    It's important to note that even though broccoli has more calcium than milk, the human body processes nutrients differently from different sources. Eg out of about 10 grams of protein from meat, about 7g are assimilated effectively in our bodies but 10g of protein from beans, leads to about 3g of assimilation.

    • @topsecret1837

      Also that animal food tends to have more amino acids and therefore more full proteins than vegetables. Animals are particularly good at absorbing and generating all the amino acids from sources we can’t digest as well nor generate. Evolution kind of sucks for us, to make humans dependent on other animals to survive regardless of what we create ourselves.
