    Another category I would have liked to have seen is how long each milk lasts before it spoils, both refrigerated and non-refrigerated. Milk alternatives might not be as econimic as dairy milk at the time of purchase, but if you're someone who doesnt actually use milk all that often, maybe having it last longer is better in the long run.

      As someone on an intermittent fasting diet, and can't eat until noon; and didn't eat breakfast as a teenager; I doubt it.
      Actually that was one of the things that came up when I was looking at starting interment fasting. From a weight loss perspective, it doesn't seem to matter when you eat your food, either as one or two big meals or six small meals throughout the day, only matters how much you're eating throughout the day.
      However, there are some advantages of restricting the time window of when you can eat. It improves insulin sensitivity, which can help decrease your risk of type 2 diabetes. You're also training your body not to eat during certain times so your body stops producing those hunger hormones when you are fast. Granted it does take about a month for your body to adjust, and it can be difficult those first few weeks.

      This entirely. Oat milk requires the least amount of water to produce out of all the alternative milks. And if you live in an area that grows grain, it's very local and requires minimal transportation.
      The flavour, as seen in this video and in my opinion, is the most universally usable. I drink dairy alternatives by choice, and I don't go out of my way to convince others, but I hear the same story: "they all taste awful" I suggest oat milk and they come back saying it's great. I find it's the easiest one for dairy drinkers to transition to. Plus in my area, the oat milk is the same price as all the other alternatives.

      Here's an interesting piece of information I know. "Raw milk", that is unprocessed milk straight from the animal, don't cause discomfort for lactose intolerant people. If you're lactose intolerant, you can drink it no problem. The reason the milk you buy in stores is problematic has to do with the pasteurization process.

    • @daltigoth3970
      @daltigoth3970 2 роки тому

      @@ferretzim8694 That is absolutely false. It is a bogus claim made by companies that sell raw milk and various "natural medicine" sites, but is demonstrably false. Studies by both the FDA and Stanford University of Medicine have found that there is literally no difference between raw milk and pasteurized milk when it comes to the impact they have on people with lactose intolerance, as they contain the same amount of lactose and the bacteria present in the raw milk do not aid in breaking it down in any meaningful way. At best, the claims made by raw milk sellers are backed by anecdotal claims by customers that either believed themselves to be lactose intolerant even though they aren't, or people that are lactose intolerant but are experiencing a placebo effect due to the claims made by the raw milk sellers.

    it all makes a huge difference. I don't like cooking with almond milk as the almond flavor will come through real strong. oat is great for baking cookies and cakes. coconut milk is fun for coconut flavored things, but using it as a stock for soups and curry is the way to go.

      Fun fact the farming operations in California use 80% of the water used by the entire state. Not to mention the fertilizer and pesticide runoff and the algae blooms those cause along with lasting effects on the environment.

      Very interesting question but it's hard to find where to even start with this. As someone said below, farms need lots of water and pesticides. But at the same time, cows do need feed and that also affects the environment. Then there's the debate whether it's better to farm food or raise animals and exploit them, whether farming is good because of how it'll affect the land and air, etc. Really interesting topic.

    • @kevcom000
      @kevcom000 2 роки тому +5

      @@walter3934 cows are able to live their entire life on pastures eating grass and while it’s not always feasible to keep them on pasture year round especially in colder climates it still offsets feed requirements but beyond that cattle and other ruminant mammals can extract energy from farming waste we can’t eat such as plant stalks or fruits/veggies that didn’t make it past quality control due to pest damage or other things.
      The important thing to note here is that half the land in America isn’t suitable for sustainably farming crops but has no issues growing grass which you can then just cut and put in storage bunkers where it’s turned into silage which can make up the bulk of what cattle eat. That’s what a lot of dairy farmers do already.
      Factory farming of animals is obviously worse for the animal but it’s hard to say if it’s significantly worse for the environment as yes now you require more feed to support your operation but you take up significantly less space and you get other offsets like tones of manure which can be used as a natural fertilizer or to produce energy. Personally I think that even if it ends up being better for the environment factory farming has moral issues that can’t be overcome chief among them being the animal deserves a decent life without the excessive suffering that comes with being locked up in a pen for its entire life.
      There really isn’t an easy answer here as for what’s best for humans or the planet and no matter your views on eating meat short of foraging for berries it’s impossible to eat without the death of millions of animals be it cattle on ranches or rodents and birds killed by plows and pesticides.

    For price, milk likely has a foot up because a LOT of grocery stores will sell milk for a loss to bring customers in to shop. Milk wars have occurred, where places like Wal-mart will drop their milk prices to bring in customers. A lot of people will shop where milk is cheapest, especially during the school season where lots of cereal is eaten. Milk alternatives are seldom, if ever, sold at a loss. Next time you walk into wal-mart, ask the dairy clerk to scan a jug of milk and see how much of a loss that jug is selling for. I htink it was somewhere around 30% when I last worked there. This is also why convenient stores sell milk for almost double the price, but alternatives are around the same price. They can not afford the several dollars loss on the sale.

      Dairy farmers have been failing as he said so while almond milk takes more water than other alternatives it is nowhere near the amount of water animal milk uses.
      The cows need to drink water we all know that but one overlooked factor is the plants the animal is eating. If your dairy cows are grass fed which less than 5% are than this would still be an issue since it’s more convenient to grow your own grass as a farmer than pick up surrounding grass.

    13:26 as someone who works in the agronomy industry, I can also tell you that soy milk is going to be cheap because a lot of soy is produced. I mean a lot of soy. Not only does soy have a lot of applications, it's also a good companion crop to re- enrich the soil for growing corn so you have a lot of farmers alternating between soybeans and corn. We end up making a lot more soy than the market would really call for as part of corn production which has a ton of applications. Remember soy and corn are used for things other than food. With corn, you have ethanol. With soy, you have biodiesel. Also a ton of animal feed and silage is made from soy So yeah, soybeans are easy to grow, grown in abundance and really maximized through bioscience so it does not surprise me at all that soy milk is cheap.

    The info I really want (especially when comparing prices) is how long the milk will last in the fridge after opening. I switched from dairy to oat milk because dairy would always go bad before I can use it. Oat, on the other hand, will last in the fridge for almost double the amount of time as dairy. Okay, I noticed one glaring omission in your testing. You tested all these milk alternatives in baking, but what about regular cooking? The primary use of milk in my kitchen is to make creamy sauces that I use in pasta dishes, casseroles, and other stuff like that. I want to know how these alternatives compare to milk in the making of sauces (without having to spend a fortune going out to buy a bunch of different milk alternatives to try it myself). Also, what about shelf life? How long will each one stay good? I hope you'll do a follow up and expand the parameters (though I doubt you will).

    Coconut milk feels like its own thing. It's great when it's used specifically for the coconut flavor and creaminess, but those unique characteristics mean that it probably doesn't make much sense to substitute for cow milk. Coconut based deserts, drinks, and other sorts of food can be quite tasty, although they can certainly be unhealthy and in some cases loaded with added sugar (which contributes to the taste). Sweet Chinese style coconut milk drinks were one of my favorite things to drink as a kid, although these days I don't drink them as much for health reasons.
    In terms of baking, I'm somewhat curious how the milks would compare to water and perhaps sugar water as controls. That would help to understand how much the ingredients themselves are actually contributing to the recipe, I feel.
    My personal favorite milk to drink would be oat milk, but it's definitely problematic as a coffee additive since it takes away from the flavor of the bean itself due to its oaty flavor. For dark roasts though, the oat flavor could also be considered a plus, potentially, depending on what you're going for. It's actually the reason I enjoy drinking it straight. That said, being allergic to soy, peas, and cashews do mean that I haven't really been able to drink that many milk alternatives.

    While I drink normal whole milk, there have been times when I've tried milk alternatives. Soy milk actually makes me sick, so I can't consume it. It also never really tasted that good to me as milk, despite me loving soy sauce and tofu. Almond milk...just...no... While it doesn't make me sick, the texture is weird, and the taste makes it worse. It's weird, cause I love almonds, so I figured I'd like almond milk. Oat milk, on the other hand was super delicious and felt like the perfect milk alternative for me, if I ever need to drop regular milk for whatever reason. Ironically, I thought I'd hate oat milk since I'm not a huge fan of oatmeal. I guess I figured it'd be like that, but nope. Turned out to be just right. Anyways, great video.
