It's a pity that our history has that spell between 1900-1950 where we were enemies as we make very good allies due to our culture's being so similar. Hindsight may be a wonderful thing but, had the wars not have happened the world would be a better place due to the Anglo Saxon links with Britain and Germany.

Britain didn't charge the French/Belgians/Dutch/Norwegians/Polish/Czechs etc etc. for our help - & we supplied them all safe refuge when they were in need, despite our own desperate state. 😒 "Special Relationship"? Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we The torch; be yours to hold it If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. #Remembrance Lest we forget.
I remember singing this hymn in assembly at school and I have always loved it. I just read the words and it invokes courage and valour. But I am dismayed to read some of what has been posted below. Read the hymn again and think. The wars were WORLD wars. My grand-uncle is lying in a grave in Portsmouth having come from Jamaica to fight in WW2. Many others from the 'other country'... 'heard of long ago' laid down their life for the very freedom we now enjoy. Let us be grateful to those who took part no matter where they come from.
I am proud to be an American, but I do so love this song! As I’m sure many of you know, the music is an excerpt from Gustav Holst’s “Jupiter”. My favorite piece of classic music, by the way! When Holst was supposed to write music to go with the poem, he was tired and overworked. So he was delighted to find that part of his work “Jupiter” would work just fine with the poem. And that is how “I vow to thee my Country” came to be. It should also be noted that Holst was British.
I'm a patriotic Monarchist but this should be our National anthem. Jerusalem should be the English anthem as well. I vow to thee is just so incredible a tune.
Monsieur Baguette I assume you were being sarcastic or pointing out what you saw as irony, and I was pointing out that both the US and the UK have changed since the Revolution.

As an American I am fascinated by the British empire! I’m proud that our relationship remains strong still despite our differences hundreds of years ago 🇺🇸America must never forget its mom🇬🇧
We have had differences? They were British people, the founding fathers were all of English decent apart from two being Scottish. The British were wrestling with British people for the most part not Americans. The nation being the U.S comes directly from England, so own it all you like, it's part of Americans heritage. Thanks for sharing.
As a Kiwi I will always remain loyal to the mother country. I’m guessing, and hopefully 🤞I am right, as an American although you are independent and have the most fantastic country to be proud of, you too in the corner of your heart have deep down feelings towards what was once your motherland ☺️.
Differences !! heck George was in London within 2 years and due to the Independence we had to stop sending criminals to the colony and had to send them to Australia instead which they were grateful lol
Here are some ideas: 1) make this the UK National Anthem. 2) Retain God Save The Queen as a "Royal" Anthem (like Commonwealth realms do) and 3) Make Jerusalem England's national anthem.

I'm half Italian half Filipino and I gotta say, I'm so envious of the Brits. We don't have this type of majestic patriotic hymns here in Italy (apart from our national anthem) and the only things that are patriotic are the popular chants. Besides, I Vow to Thee My Country is a piece that I absurdly love, I love it so much and this also explains my love for Jupiter from Holst's Planets. Hi! ❤️
That's kind of ya mate .I've met Germans and except for your GOVT and the dreaded EU wanting to rule us Brits throughout history most of you are good people ,just they suck Jawohl meine freund!" :)
That's a nice thing to say but, I think it's because our culture's are very aligned.
It's a pity that our history has that spell between 1900-1950 where we were enemies as we make very good allies due to our culture's being so similar. Hindsight may be a wonderful thing but, had the wars not have happened the world would be a better place due to the Anglo Saxon links with Britain and Germany.
Thank you, Jey :)
There is a special place in the hearts Americans reserved exclusively for the British. May we stand tall together for a thousand years and more.
God bless you all our dear friends!
🤔 But you you didn't in the mid 1770's - nor did you in 1812! 🤨
- And it was only a handful, 6,500, that volunteered to come stand (or more accurately fly) & fight along sidewith us in 1940 - & most of them had to do it via Canada because the US didn't condone it. 😕 Happy to get rich, screw us over, with Lend/Lease (& later the Marshall Plan) oh yes! Britain didn't charge the French/Belgians/Dutch/Norwegians/Polish/Czechs etc etc. for our help - & we supplied them all safe refuge when they were in need, despite our own desperate state. 😒

How kind of you to express good wishes. There were a few Russian pieces, especially the Probazhesky March (I misspelled that) that are quite lovely, and give me a sense of being closer to my Russian relations, who were murdered in 1918 in Etekrninburg. The love that never falters, the love that pays the price
The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice
And there's another country, I've heard of long ago
Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know
We may not count her armies, we may not see her king
Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering
And soul by soul, and silently her shining bounds increase
And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace

I am proud to be an American, but I do so love this song! As I’m sure many of you know, the music is an excerpt from Gustav Holst’s “Jupiter”. My favorite piece of classic music, by the way! When Holst was supposed to write music to go with the poem, he was tired and overworked. So he was delighted to find that part of his work “Jupiter” would work just fine with the poem. And that is how “I vow to thee my Country” came to be. It should also be noted that Holst was British.

TheChap No No No No. God Save the Queen is the National Anthem. Have been for 400 years. It isn't Aesthetics, it is History.
Don't make I Vow to Thee our National Anthem. It is to remember the fallen.
I am from Indonesia but this song made me feel touched and thought that British has a beautiful song
I am a Yank but this song gets me all misty eyed.
I`m English and it gives me the same feeling every time, kind regards from Blighty Mr.Coffee.
@@fredbeach2085 I'm from the US, but I don't care! I love your country! God bless the queen and God bless England! Nothing but love for the mother of United States 🇬🇧❤🇺🇸
What a majestic hymn, beautiful and powerful. I have never heard a hymn so inspiring.
One of the all time great national songs of any country in the world. “And there’s another country I’ve heard of long ago. Most dear to them that love her most great to them that know.” How does that not affect your emotions, regardless of where you Hail from? God bless :)
I swear, every time I hear the tune I can't help it but sing the lyrics out loud, even if I'm not a UK citizen.
Thank you Gustav Holst for this majestic piece, you made me a little British inside with your wonderful music.
I'm English and I've never heard this before..
Though being an Indian I really like this anthem. It fills me with patriotism towards my beloved 🇮🇳. Thank you 🇬🇧 for this beautiful anthem❤
Love Britain from Belgium❤❤❤🇬🇧
