If anyone wants to attempt using an iron on anything edible something important to know is that most new irons have chemicals that burn off after 1-3 uses. So it’s much safer to use a new iron on some clothes first or use an iron you have had for a while
For the ice cream, using pre-crushed ice would help prevent punctures, especially if you got the pieces small like shaved ice. And then you'd want really heavy-duty bags, like the kind used for sous vide, or using a thick and sturdy Tupperware that's taped shut for the ice container. Probably also stick it to the drum of the dryer, like with double sided tape or something. It might tumble a bit less, but there's probably a lower chance of it breaking that way.
Why not use the plastic bottle/container idea, but instead of just putting it loose in the dryer, duct tape it to the barrel as well? Throw in additional salt and it will churn as it rolls in the inside of the larger bottle.
I know, right? I had the same thought. "Voice-over MatPat" and "live-action MatPat" really do feel like different people. The speaking cadence and energy is subtly different in both.

For the ice cream, have you considered covering the lid entirely in duct tape to prevent shattering and then putting that inside the backpack so the plastic jug isn’t between 2 hard objects?
Yep. When we did it in girl guides there were several layers of duct tape on each bag. And leaving the ice outside in the sun probably wasn't a great idea either.
So from inside out it should be: Ice cream base in plastic jar (sealed with duct tape) Ice and salt (packed in around jar) Metal Coffee can (fully duct taped lid) 3 layers Bubble wrap 1 layer duct tape
Next time, maybe use crushed ice. It's a lot less likely to break the plastic. Actually, instead of using plastic, put it in a metal container with a metal lid, it'll keep the ice cold so it would not melt. Bet you could make ice cream that way.
So.. after reviewing and counter testing, it DOES work however it requires 4 cycles and 8 ice changes total using the bottle and jar method he ended with.
Suggestions for ice cream, having made a bit myself with a homemade crank one: more salt for the ice- lots more salt, and realistically more ice as well. Basically you need to create saltwater as it has a lower freezing temp than the ice cream, and more salt makes that more efficient. Also- they make glass mason jars about the same size as your plastic one, with metal lids. Maybe also try attaching it to a side, to keep the motion consistent. (Something you try to do with hand crank ice cream makers is not stop the motion, so inconsistent motion and change in direction might be working against you.) Good luck! Hope that gave you some ideas! Look forward to the next attempt!
I was thinking maybe a top load plastic dryer might also help. The one they have is a front load, made with metal, and is a bit too big, which causes big inconsistent motion to the plastic bag/jar of ice.
not sure if glass is the right option, at least without changing other factors like affixing it to the barrel itself. If even plastic, with a higher elastic deformation potential, got shattered by the various tumbling, the glass will likely become dangerous.
@@cullenlatham2366 excellent point, which is why I also suggested attaching it to the side. A sealable metal container might work better in case the attachment fails- however metal will also contract with the cold and make the container harder to open, or won't seal well enough to contain the ice water. I do think if they do test a large glass mason jar, wrapping it tightly in a blanket and tying it up might be a good idea as well as attaching it to one of the walls.
But one thing that didn't make sense to me is ice cream needs a lot of air to get churned into it - with all the necessary sealing of jars I don't see how you could get enough air in to make ice cream
@@poisonpenfairy2844 when I make it, the recipes I use, the liquid only goes about halfway up the container, and eventually fills it. Perhaps that's something else that their experiment can improve on- but really I'm not sure what the solution to that conundrum would be.

Can you just imagine Ollie when he grows up and tells these stories of his parents only to find out everyone else does not cook their dinner like this ahaha
Might I suggest retrying the icecream experiment in the heavy duty plastic jug, but then also puting sheets or towels in with it to absorb impact. You'll still get the turning and tossing the ice should still spin. You'll just eliminate the impact.
I made ice cream in a bag when I was little, a couple recommendations: 1) The jar probably would have worked if you had reinforced the lid (maybe with duck tape); 2) Temperature, make the ice colder by putting some rock salt in with it. With those two things, you can make something resembling soft-serve in about 5 minutes; if you want something firm, like Dreyer's (ha, pun), it would probably take about 4 hours (you may have to switch out the ice a couple times). Maybe use a food sealer to make a bag for the cream, those things are pretty tough.
in the frame where we see them put the jug in you can actually see something shiny like foil surrounding the lid which is presumably tape as well as a small canister of iodized salt
@@freindlycommentator1710 Yes they had foil tape surrounding the edge of the lid but not on top. What kilroy is suggesting, and I agree with, is covering the ENTIRE lid in duct/foil tape to provide some extra reinforcement to the harder and more fragile lid.
For the ice cream in the dryer, maybe use small round ice cubes like what Dairy Queen offers to prevent a breakage of the container and to prevent to much banging in the dryer, take out the paddles so the jug can spin more smoothly. Maybe then we can make ice cream possible! :D
I would 100% go to a Restaurant where they cooked with Laundry Room stuff just for the Novelty, that would be pretty awesome. Idk if you could do it good consistently but you would probably find some way I'm not thinking about
i like the like little animated characters of your editors and other people including you when you are on film and game theory (and sometimes food theory)
In chemistry class, we used a can with ingredients inside a bigger can with ice and salt. The thermodynamics unit was the perfect excuse to make ice cream in class XD Honestly, your biggest problem is the container breaking/leaking when it's tumbled...
It probably would have worked if it was tightly packed crushed ice with salt in a tub and the milk in a heat sealed bag also putting angel delight or something similar in the milk would give it a bigger chance of working
And that is the story of how all three of them met - the first kid's dad was the firefighter who came to the rescue after the failed experiment that was trying to blast a burrito with a water heater, and the other kid's dad is teacher in question who's doing the whole show and tell

Tasty has a series called Fish Out of Water where a chef cooks a full meal with different objects like an iron, rice cooker, etc. So if you like this its a good series to check out.
With the ice cream bags breaking i would assume the ice had some sharp edges that punctured the bags. Maybe if you made some special ice in those round ice trays so that there are no sharp edges it would work? Or maybe line the plastic bags with some sort of cutproof nylon bag so it can’t puncture the plastic

@@CrystalClearNews No, they've been married long before Game Theory became popular. I don't have an exact video, but they got married a good while ago.
Hi! Lover of food and puzzles here :D If you seal the ice cream in a small aluminum canister this should work a lot better. Aluminum is dryer safe, it's common to put aluminum foil in dryers to help with static actually! Adding something inside to help mix it, similarly to how you did the butter, should also help. A lot of highly rated ice cream makers are built like this, with a canister holding the ice cream ingredients surrounded by a larger canister that contains the coolant. Plus you won't have to worry about the ice piercing the bag : )
What about taping the canister to the center of the dryer. So that it would just spin and mix the milk inside instead of tumbling around and spilled its content
I know, old video but when it comes to the ice cream, possibly bag < thermal blanket < tightly wrapped towel < jar < ice+salt < bag < ice cream, towel might protect the jar from breaking, thermal blanket may be useful to contain the cool if dryer can't function without some hot air.
I love being a theorist. This is the only channel on UA-cam I can imagine doing this kind of content in a way that feels genuine, not exaggerated or clickbaity
NGL, I’m definitely still impressed they actually made *butter* that efficiently even though the ice cream was an epic fail. Dessert didn’t fail overall Imo though. If you have whipped cream you can just dip fruit in it and make it a dessert.
What if they used grinded down ice? I feel like that could have prevented damage to the container while also keeping it cold. There has to be a way to make icecream with a dryer, there must.
Having made homemade butter and attempted ice cream, I believe it. I literally have a jar that I can put cream into and make butter just by shaking it. The jars actually meant to make whipped cream, but if you shake it a little bit too long, it turns into butter BUT, as a kid my mom thought it’d be a cute play date activity to have my friend and me make homemade ice cream by tossing a bag of ice cream materials inside a bag of salty ice. Let me tell you, baby Tea was not coordinated and constantly dropped the bag, and that bag got very leaky. Also, it takes a stupid amount of time and agitation to make ice cream happen. Even if you’re using a bucket full of salty ice and a canister with a churn in it, it still takes a while to make ice cream (experience in Girl Scouts). Tl;dr the math is mathing to me
I'm a little confused why they cooked scallops in the washer, but no pasta or potatoes. They even mentioned potatoes. Also, I'd love to see them figure out a way to make bread or pancakes with laundry room equipment

Next time, maybe use crushed ice. It's a lot less likely to break the plastic. Actually, instead of using plastic, put it in a metal container with a metal lid, it'll keep the ice cold so it would not melt. Bet you could make ice cream that way.
Also use the heat proof tape, to entirely cover the lid and it should keep the lid from breaking open
Or, spherical ice! It might work since it has no sharp edges.
So.. after reviewing and counter testing, it DOES work however it requires 4 cycles and 8 ice changes total using the bottle and jar method he ended with.
Or just vacuum seal the whole stuff, those bags are a lot more durable
@@maxp4790 it needs to churn so air is needed.
Perhaps that's something else that their experiment can improve on- but really I'm not sure what the solution to that conundrum would be.

the food theory editors are amazing
Wow. How did they _not_ make a Dreyer's pun!?
Ice cream in a bag was a great.
in the frame where we see them put the jug in you can actually see something shiny like foil surrounding the lid which is presumably tape as well as a small canister of iodized salt
@@freindlycommentator1710 Yes they had foil tape surrounding the edge of the lid but not on top. What kilroy is suggesting, and I agree with, is covering the ENTIRE lid in duct/foil tape to provide some extra reinforcement to the harder and more fragile lid.

24:50 The paper on their fridge that says "DAD" in colorful macaroni, Oh my gosh, my heart. My soul. It can't take it
For the ice cream in the dryer, maybe use small round ice cubes like what Dairy Queen offers to prevent a breakage of the container and to prevent to much banging in the dryer, take out the paddles so the jug can spin more smoothly. Maybe then we can make ice cream possible! :D
Maybe envelop it all in some towels to cushion the tumbling (and, as a bonus, insulate it better)
@@pedroff_1 I was thinking lining the sides of the dryer with pillows.
I'd just use shaved ice

With the ice cream bags breaking i would assume the ice had some sharp edges that punctured the bags. 100% confident the theorist restaurant cooking with laundry equipment is more sanitary than some places we all have locally. 😅
You might be right about that 😂😂
Hi! Lover of food and puzzles here :D
If you seal the ice cream in a small aluminum canister this should work a lot better.
For the coolant you can even use milk, as they found out recently
Yes milk😂
What about taping the canister to the center of the dryer. So that it would just spin and mix the milk inside instead of tumbling around and spilled its content
Well considering I have never ever heard of ANYONE putting aluminum in a dryer, I don't know if I'd call it "common".
The editing for this has so much life and personality. Really enjoyable.
I know, old video but when it comes to the ice cream, possibly bag < thermal blanket < tightly wrapped towel < jar < ice+salt < bag < ice cream, towel might protect the jar from breaking, thermal blanket may be useful to contain the cool if dryer can't function without some hot air.
The laundry food series continue's on to be the greatest series in the internet
If the jar lid didnt break, maybe ice cream would have worked. I want a 3rd episode of this and I REQUIRE ice cream in a dryer! ;)

Steph looked so mad that the scallops worked, and Mat looked so happy that the butter worked. XD
Matpat slowly working through the weird ideas he has in the middle of the night when there's no coffee
The jars actually meant to make whipped cream, but if you shake it a little bit too long, it turns into butter
BUT, as a kid my mom thought it’d be a cute play date activity to have my friend and me make homemade ice cream by tossing a bag of ice cream materials inside a bag of salty ice.
