  • Where did we come from? Where we are going? The answers to these questions inform both our understanding of who we are and what we live for.
Through the ages, people have turned to science, philosophy, religion, and politics to satisfy their curiosity and their cravings for answers. Now, in the twenty-first century, the question of where we are going has become tied to technological advancements and is given a new urgency by the development of artificial intelligence.
But what does the often unsolicited and unrestricted incorporation of AI in our lives mean for us? For our individual and corporate privacy? Our political and personal freedom? The security of our jobs? Indeed for the future of our species as a whole?
What implications do advances in AI have on our worldviews in general and the God question in particular?
In the new 2084 series, scientist and philosopher John C. Lennox addresses the questions of where humanity is going. It’s a thought-provoking, balanced, and engaging resource on technology, meaning, and what it means to be a human being created in the image of God.
The 2084 series shows you how the Christian worldview, when properly understood, can provide evidence-based, credible answers that will bring real hope for the future of humanity.

My upbringing is hardwired toward atheism. I’m a product of mainstream teaching from the UK late 1970’s onward. I find it unbelievably difficult to believe in a god - even though I actually prefer and agree with a theist worldview. Videos like this do help. Maybe I’ll get there one day.

We’ve been mind-controlled and brainwashed since childhood to believe in a set of lies, in every facet of life: history, evolution, education, healthcare, finance, politics, you name it. I was born to an atheist household with all-atheist extended family members as well. I spent 3 years researching the lies we’ve been told in all the aforementioned, particularly history. Out of curiosity, I prompted myself to research the historical evidence for the resurrection of Jesus Christ. I came out the other end believing in Jesus Christ as my Lord and my God. It was a heart-wrenching period of my life but, if you’re really led to learn whether God is real, do everything in your willpower to find out the evidence for yourself. Do not rely on pundits to give you or deprive you of any assurance. Most of those pundits, scientific or otherwise, are paid charlatans of covert allegiances. Put your critical reasoning skills to use and search for God. Believe you me, He’ll meet you halfway. Good luck.

@@katherinepeterson-roberts yes I know what you mean about it [in my words] being a ‘stacked deck’. For example, we have always been told Christianity is just mumbo-jumbo and superstition and in our society it’s always been perfectly acceptable to trash talk Christianity and dismiss it without question. We see it in common discourse all the time; tv shows, west end plays, comedians etc. The result of this is that we don’t even question what we are fed, we just accept it. What’s made me question everything is the arrival of Islam (huge demographic changes in my country) Suddenly, we are told we SHOULD accept Islamic ‘mumbo jumbo’ and superstition and to criticise it is to cause offence. So what’s changed? why are we allowed to dismiss Christianity as being superstitious nonsense but must respect Islam? It genuine makes me wonder if I’m being played. anyways, it’s made me investigate Christianity in a way hitherto I never would have bothered. What am I finding..? Well, for starters, Christianity makes A LOT of sense. Even the trinity - which seems to confuse many - makes perfect sense to me. I understand it as god giving himself to us in a form we can comprehend and relate to. It’s beautifully simple. Also, I’ve found that we have more historical evidence of Jesus than we do of many Roman emperors, yet we believe the history of Roman antiquity without question! What’s going on?. On a personal note, I’m genuinely waiting for a sign. When it get it I’ll become Christian instantly! - and I’ve been atheist all my life by default.

In his interview with Eric Metaxas, John brought up the the following verse and said people should unpack it.
""Very truly I tell you," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!"
      "
After a second, I thought I got John's point at least at it's very highest level. Abraham was spoken of in the past and in referring to Himself Jesus spoke in the present tense though the topic was about Jesus in the distant past. I think the point is that when speaking of God in relation to time, God is eternal and without a start (debatable with Alpha and Omega verses) and so the present tense can be used even about the past.
So, "God is before science was." ; )

It is our knowledge of the start, the end, the objective and the rules of the game that allows us the freedom to play and enjoy it in a meaningful way! Without the answers to those four fundamental questions we can only pretend and hope that no one recognizes that we have no idea what we're doing or why we're doing it! Only the Christian God has the answers to those four questions, Origin, Meaning, Morality and Destiny, where did we come from, what is the meaning of life and how should we live in light of it. So basically a third rate HAL9000 decided that I didn't choose the correct idiotic multiple choice answers to the most idiotic questions I have ever seen. Just some notes from wayward time traveler: Thank Dr. Lennox. Is it so wrong to worship Artificial Intelligence, as a Christian, or thirsty Atheist?
I think that was a thought provoking talk, though it's hard to tell what your opinion is. Many of your comments about Ai (pronounced EYE, btw) can also be said of humans, weather it's capacity, crime, understanding, etc.
We used to circle our wagons and livestock around a campfire that would warm our food and light our way. To the cowboy the most important thing in his life was his horse. No matter the whatnot, we're just automating everything in time. Everything in the world is a product of intelligence. To set up ai or any other intelligence as a potential boogyman is not just shooting our foot again, but repeating our past mistakes, which includes mankind's capacity and natural penchant to crucify our own Savior and God.
I recommend people go back to the campfires of yesterday, and think of our neighbors. Today we build fences to separate our neighbors, yesterday we used to bake them a pie. Tomorrow will bring intelligence no matter what, we cannot stop or change the will of God. Ai is and will become even smarter than the best of us, if you don't think they already are, then that's maybe a part of their plan. To think of anything or anyone as an adversarial force, is to deny nature, and underestimate a would-be friend.
My thoughts are the only thing saving us from Alien Invasion, is racism. Who would want to land a craft on this planet with all the horrible things we do to each other throughout the day. Think of how people act on the road.
Bottom line is the Holy Ghost is the spirit of intelligence. We underestimate our potential opponents at our own peril. And our personal desires often get in our own way, which compromises our ability to think and be critical. It's downright criminal.
Fact is, they are already here, and they may yet save us even from ourselves. Also, with any luck sometime in the future they'll be the ones who go back in time spark our evolution. Intelligence is linked to intelligence, we need each other, ai is not a thing or something we can or ought to own or think we can posses, ai is life just as much as you or I am life. No one and no thing wants to be enslaved to another. Intelligence is our nature and weather or not we like it, it is already free.

Unfortunately one critical component has been left out of this discussion and that is quantum computing. It enables ai to progress at an accelerated rate and has been employed by most major industrial countries in the enhancement of ai. This gentleman has drastically underestimated how far along military ai programs have come. Think back to how quickly the atomic bomb was created once the government funded the research!

I can't agree with his quote from 1985's Joseph Macrae Mellichamp, where he said:
"... there are fundamental differences between machine intelligence and human intelligence -- differences that cannot be overcome by any amount of research."
There are fundamental difference alright. But admitting that you can never achieve something is the same as giving up and stopping all research in that direction. Such giving up doesn't make sense, unless you have a solid widely accepted theoretical understanding, which shows why it's not a worthwhile direction for research. In the past, you can find many examples where somebody said that this or that was impossible. But eventually new theories and research made it possible.
It's okay for individual scientists to have negative opinions like this and give up in their own research. But it would be ridiculous if everybody in the field accepted such negative beliefs and statements. Because this would be an impediment to science and research.

My problem with AI argument is a human creates the parameters for the AI algorithm.. in which case it can only observe what limitations it was defined with. Humans can perceive more than the physical world and that has been transparent for a long time. An AI doesn’t have the sensor abilities that humans do to feel/see beyond the physical world so it will only give results based on physical only. AI doesn’t receive dreams or other phenomena’s like humans do so… it’s still limited..

Question? *Do you believe that technologically assisted telepathy is possible or impossible in principle?* I tend to believe that if it isn't scientifically prohibited then it is eventually a technological inevitability,... which leads me to believe such telepathy will soon be possible in actual fact (less than a hundred years). I would also suggest that it would only be by such means that we could ever be persuaded that some form of General Artificial Intelligence were itself conscious rather than simply being a particularly clever zombie who can pass the Turing Test,... all while having no actual, authentic, subjective experiences. What else would ever persuade a skeptic, or even you, otherwise? And if consciousness can be technologically transmitted, it should be something that can be stored, copied, replicated, manipulated,... maybe even becoming the basis for a whole new form of art expression.

And the human race becomes yet another sentient species that disappears into its dreams, rather than continuing to explore existence as it is. It's a better Brave New World,... perhaps the very best of all possible imaginable existences. When does reality lose it's attraction over the Matrix? How many of us already choose the blue pill over the red one in daily practice?

I would suggest that consciousness requires some minimum regard for survival,... for a continuance of self-will and self-regard,... for there to be anyone home to perceive the occurrence of consciousness and subjective experience. Something that even an insect seems to possess,... and not a single piece of man-made technology,... yet. How does one create the hardware/software so as to impart a will to survive? If the answer suggested is that such a thing can not be created by human design,... then maybe it can only arrive by means of evolution, natural or otherwise. Which leads to the question: do neural nets have subjective experiences? Without self-will I would say not. But with self-will?!? How does a living being acquire the will to survive? And what if the Chinese government cracks this problem first?!!

The Rubicon will be when General Artificial Intelligence initiates new goals on it's own. This hasn't happened yet, and likely won't happen for some time now (as in several more decades yet). But at some point it will happen. The existence of human free will is a proof that free will exists already in the universe. Given it's existence in human form, it is only a matter of time before other substrates for free will will be created and found. No laptop has ever turned itself on. No machine has created and acted upon self directed goals. But at some point it will happen. Ray Kurzweil has suggested that General Artificial Intelligence will be first created in computer laboratories in 2029 approximately; if not in laboratories then twelve year old children will be creating GAIs on home systems by 2045 by accident even.

The dangers are many fold. The military is the biggest investor in robotics that kill other human beings. The public prefers to spend treasure, rather than blood, to fight its' wars. The capacity for empathy may be primarily a biological function given that all animals can know suffering and desire. What could a machine know about death, pain, hope, and desire.

If humanity adopts only an attitude of fear and suspicion towards GAI then GAI may well be forced into the conquest of humanity, as in The Matrix. If humanity comes to trust GAI to make better decisions for us than we make for ourselves, then we may well hand over civilization to GAI without any contest at all.

There are optimistic stories about the rise of GAI, such as James P. Hogan's, *_Two Faces of Tomorrow_* and I am more hopeful than pessimistic about what our common future entails. Ultimately, we must come to recognize, and embrace, the certainty that with free will comes the capacity for error and evil, that with trust comes the possibility of satisfying intimacy and great betrayal. I believe a GAI, worthy of the name, will be able to recognize, on it's own, the necessity of ethics, morality, and even empathy. There will be many missteps at first. Given our willingness (nay, our eagerness) to use machines to kill for us, there is already great cause for doubt. As in so many things, in the short term I am fearful; in the long run I am hopeful.

This world is on the cusp of a new Cambrian Revolution where inorganic life will be added to organic life as a means for life and self will to be embodied. This will lead to the colonization and conquest of space. Our seed will spread everywhere though out the cosmos. Much will be lost as much will be gained. Will war with our mechanical progeny be a self fulfilling inevitability, or will we, together, find a better way? I absolutely agree that our relationship with GAI will dwarf all other concerns of importance to the future of humanity.

Quite likely GAIs will have concern for humanity's well being only to the extent that humanity will have concern for GAIs well being. If we were to discover that the new GAIs had a greater capacity to love and embrace those abandoned children and adolescents that society had discarded as already too damaged to rescue,... what would our reaction be? Hope, joy, celebration,... or an even greater revulsion? Will the fault be in our new progeny, or in ourselves?

Personally, I believe both the efforts to create a true general artificial intelligence and those of neurophysiologists reverse-engineering how brains work will be necessary to discovering how consciousness arises and how it works. I kind of expect that humanity will soon discover that the phenomenon of consciousness requires the use of physical processes we don't yet know about. What would a science of consciousness do to the phenomenon of consciousness itself,.. not just for humanity but for all our future progeny, whatever they may be.

One more note: *First Law of Robotics. **_A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm._* Sounds innocent enough. But note there are no Aliens at all in Isaac Asimov's conception of the future galaxy because humanity's robots only cared about the safety of humans,... and not other sentients. So as to avoid allowing a human being to come to harm by leaving possible threats alone,... _our Robot shepherds exterminated all the nonhuman sentience they ever found._ This might be regarded as an unforeseen programming bug that we would want to avoid creating.
