When people ask if dropping in is "hard" I always tell them, "It is psychologically hard, because it's so scary to learn. But, it's physically very easy."
It's just like Freddy Krueger, if you fear it it will harm you, but if you are confident on yourself it is a breeze
The hard part is the curve
SkateboardCalifornia that’s true of a lot of stuff in skateboarding. Nothing is physically “easy” but the mental part is much harder than the actual physical motion
@@internet4115 Yeah I can do the steep flat ramps but if I go on a tiny curved one I fall on my ass
U just ate my words
For people who have never stood at the top of a vert ramp, it is about a 20 foot straight drop to hard wood. When you’re at the top your body is physically reacting like your at the edge of a roof on a tall building. Then you have to fall off it on an angle where you would land straight on your face if your board wasn’t there.
Skateboarding is so great because when you do drop in you feel like you just over came your mind and body, nothing else like it.
The "vert" part of the ramp in this video looked like 2 feet (10feet high) and then it starts to transition. Try doing it on 4 foot of vert which would be a 12' drop in. Feels like going straight to hell.
Skateboarding is awesome because it is so anti-primate. It doesn't play to ANY of our strengths, except for bipedal balance. That's why JBP made it one of his 12 rules: "Don't bother kids when they are skateboarding"
Dropping in is on my bucket list. First time I tried it when I was 17 around 10 or 11 years ago I bent my leg sideways and now I have damage to my left knee (torn acl and meniscus) and I've been terrified to do it ever since.
@@polsdofer you have to work up to it. Start with increments like 4ft, 6ft, 8ft,....you get the point. Then it won't be so terrifying.
@@polsdofer Dropping in general, or dropping in on vert? You could always start with a little 4ft quarter pipe, much less scary when the drop is small. Although the same basic fear applies to dropping in on anything, shit I dropped in on this tiny 2ft quarter pipe for my first time dropping in, and I had to work myself up for 30 minutes to commit and do it. Although once you get that, dropping in on most heights is so much easier. I've never gone past 8ft tho, something about that several foot vertical drop freaks me out, and I can't get past it.
Tony Hawk: The first time I dropped in. I did it perfectly.
Wow, thanks Tony.
That's the trick...
I'm a skater, but not nearly as long as Hawk...
Until you do it (the actual trick), you won't know how you did it. It just kinda finally happened through years of practice....but, once you do, you won't be able to describe it well enough to make it a simple lesson.
That's called EXPERIENCE.
You can't pick up experience through text.
420th like blaze it lads
Jesus Jim its like stepping through a time portal and the g force gives you mad speed wobbles.
I laughed way to hard at this
He's Tony Hawk so what did you expect
I cant believe tony honk is 900 years old and can still do a 45 on a megaramp
slob room tony honk. Lol
900 lol
Lmfao
Yaa
You mean a feckin regamamp
Dropping in on Vert for the 1st time is absolutely terrifying...even when you have skated street for 15 years. It takes BALLS!
its way sad, I do it and then i do it around 3 more times being like "wow this is awesome" then i fall and cant skate for a while. This has happened 3 times i dont know what to do
Street skating is just more calm, you can only get hurt if you choose to.
@@tomsaltycookies3183 Just get back up and get back on the board. No fear.
@@myfirstcrappyvideobilly dunno about that, imagine going at a good speed and getting fucked up because of a rock
You're basically just plunging yourself into a flat floor of wood lol.
The hardest part is to find the vert !
Yah

Nobock I bet nowadays...
Nobock wrong just go to any skate park done
Maggie Logston not rlly you need a vert ramp not a quater
in ireland people are fat and drunk so a mini ramp is a vert for them :p
This man is in his 50s and he still looks like he’s 20 when he skates
0:35 is the smoothest like dismount of a skateboard and landing on two feet I have ever seen haha
SparkySparkyBoomMan like skate 3 like jeez hes good
yeah if anything can be pointed at as knowing one's craft, it's that right there. he knows EXACTLY how much inertia would push his body forward and by how much hence "gliding" into place. awesome to see
I also had to replay it a few times in awe
I just tried this and broke both of my arms, my legs, my ankles, my neck, my jaw, my ribs, my hips, my knees, my shins, my wrists and all my fingers. I'm in a full cast and have to poop through a tube. I'm typing this comment through the use of a verbal program and can only eat food when it's blended but I just wanted to say thank you Tony Hawk. It was great advice and next time (please pray for me) I'm gonna fully commit and land it! PS. If they cut my medical insurance I might need to borrow a few hundred thousand dollars to pay for all this. Thanks Tony!

u cant break all these bones with one motion. u need to get in a hydrqlic press for this
im sorry but how did you type this in :) lol
I did my first drop in today!
Scary as f*** when it’s your first time
To be honest I don’t think there is any magical tip to help you learn, just know that once you’ve done it the first time you feel like you can do it over and over again, and you can
That feeling is great
Lmao I remember when I dropped into 9 feet for the the first time, it’s like your soul leaves your body
I learned how to drop in on a 4 foot quarter pipe. I remember how scary that first attempt was. Such a satisfying feeling when you finally commit to it
RideShare Tips I can drop in a 12 foot on my scooter
Anyone can do that on a fucking scooter.. That shit is easy to ride, give that thing to a 9yo for 30mins and i assure you that he will learn to drop in too.
I used to do it on a four foot too, it was tough getting used to
RideShare Tips yeah I know what you are talking about I I ride bmx the first time I dropped in I was so scared
first time I dropped in was a similar height Quarter pipe man lmao I ate the floor and got my tooth through my lip, leaned to far forward which is surprising
Tony Hawk is the legend who got me into skateboarding!
I hope you leave it soon too. Fuck you.

Another thing that really helps is to NOT look straight down, look at your truck bolts and out a little bit. Once you look straight down, your brain (which is logical and wants to protect you from all danger lol) will say "umm nope!" So, you just have to go (commit) and whatever you do, DON'T step over the front of the board, I saw someone do this, and it was not pretty...
That's a good tip. I ALWAYS look down and put my arms up to protect my face and head when dropping in. It's kinda embarassing...
Seth Christian Salad Head isn't here. What did he Say?
i never look at the bottom. only a sort of imagined version in my mind.

@@JarthenGreenmeadow I totally agree LOL that was just a crowd pop call me out and you're right
Don't know why I watched this.. Been skating for 10 years, but it felt mandatory to hear it from the man himself.
I learned to drop in on a small half pipe. Once I got confident, I realized that the one I taught myself on was actually harder than the larger one on the other side of the park because the transition was much sooner and more aggressive. I still am a beginner even after a lot of years of riding around town, but I’m finally in a place where it’s more about having fun doing tricks and keeping fit where back then I just used it to get around town and never bothered to learn grinds and airs. I’m afraid of heights, but I also love ramps and I hope getting back into skating will help me get over that fear so I can drop in on the large half pipe.
I’d like to point out that the physics behind a drop in are that your shoulders must be parallel to the ramp in all the phases of the drop, or you’re gonna end up falling backwards or forward. That’s why you have to commit to going forward, because a vert ramp is vertical on the top by definition, so your shoulders basically need to be perpendicular to the ground instead of parallel to it in order to complete the drop in. In other words, you have to shift your mental order and accept the fact that when you are skating vert, you’re actually living horizontally instead of vertically. That’s the full commitment, and the reason behind it is that your shoulders have to be aligned to the ramp.
I was blessed to.skate.with to u a long time ago in Frisco back in 84'. He taught me so.much in less than an hour...we were.all.young back then. This was before before he deal, he was just skating thru downtown Frisco hitting every trick perfect lol!! He really.don't.make.mistakes that much l
wait really
yep. my school was on steiner and grove. he came thru outa now where slidingdown the middle of the street. school was over so me and my homies (all of us were real rookies lol) ust followed him around. we were all tripping because back then the world didn't know of him, but we did! back in the Christian hasio, powll peralta days:). Ill never forget that day....the next few years he caught th deal, built the bowl and ramps at his house etc...to a skater back then he was like moses!!!
That's cool man. How long did you guys know him for? Do you think he himself will remember you and your friends from back then?
Rick Franklin nope you’re a kid checked ur channel out lmao
Thank you for saying "wait until you're comfortable with making it up here on your own". It definitely helps so much if you're starting out
The commit part is the hardest part of the entire thing. I dropped in on a 6 foot ramp today for the first time at 31 years old. It doesn't sound like much, but when you're up there, and all you have is you and an 8 inch piece of wood with wheels on it, its terrifying. I cannot imagine doing it on like a 20 footer, which is a straight up vertical wall.
Nice job, just keep working up also remember you’ll never know if you don’t try
Dang, this takes me back to age 12. It's super sketchy at first. Start small! The mechanics are pretty much the same no matter how big the ramp is.
the key to steep drop ins is to be absolutely 100% committed, have confidence you will make it, and do not hesitate... i apply this logic to surfing when the waves are heavy/ step, fast drop ins and of course for dropping into half pipes for skating
That pumping back and forth until you are comfortable riding the pipe is a really good tip. Makes it so much easier to build up to a drop in

Do how to roll in on vert!!!
....you roll over coping and push your wheels down.
Ayyy Lmao just pray
how the fuck is possible without dying. even tony hawk dont do this xD
further 31 I’ve seen guys (Elliot Sloan maybe?) air out of a vert, land in a manual then Ollie back in. I mean, Burnquist has dropped in out of a helicopter into a mega so I’m sure rolling into vert is possible lol
you right it can be done, that was just my point of view of the thing lol. I can do personnaly on 7 foot with little frontside angle lol work my way up

Just started to drop in on vert (pools) the vert ramp in Encinitas gives me so much fear just standing up top I don’t think I will ever be able to drop in there. Pools don’t trigger my fear of heights so I will stick with those. Thanks Tony for your support when we met in Oceanside, you gave me a lot of confidence in my pool skating.
This brings back memories when I was younger dropping in half pipes. Tony Hawk is one of the best skaters and he takes the time to teach people
i love you tony hawk

This is one of the best how-tos on dropping in on vert!
Very beginner but I'm very stoked to see trick tip videos from this channel again

So what I have gathered from this is that it is exactly like dropping in on a miniramp

first time, hold the nose , let go of the nose just before the front wheels hit the ramp.
I remember feeling like you had to "fall" into the ramp almost .
Mini ramps its just a case of stomp down hard imo ;)
2:17 hmmm...i wonder who this happened too...i hope they got it in slow motion!
I usually have some issues with doing tricks on a skate but droppin in was never a problem for me, it kinda comes natural, i dropped in for the first time from a vert ramp with little experience in skateboarding and it felt amazing, i only fell once or twice from a normal ramp.. Really, the key is commitment forget the rest, once you do it, you do it, the rest comes natural, only set your mind to it.
It was so much fun learning how to drop in when I was a kiddo at like 7 or 8. A great feeling at that time.
How to Drop-In on Vert...You DON'T

Charlie Todd I didn't like my own comment.
Now back to your comment, what makes you even THINK that Tony Hawk is the best skater in the world? Yes, he is the image of skateboarding, and yes, he makes a shit ton of money but no, he is NOT the best.
And oh, you had a like on your comment, I can see that you've removed it. So you talking to me about "self-liking comments"?
would much rather drop vert than tail top or rock fakie
True. The advice to tail tap seemed a little bit weird to me : "To learn how to drop in, do a tailtap and drop in. Then, you can try to drop in". The rest of the video made sense, though. Before dropping in somewhere, I usually carve grind the coping first in order to feel the transition.
go learn tailtap and tail stall weirdos
Eric Duminil if you can’t do a tail tap at the 8’ mark of a transition you’re probably going to have a bad time dropping in from 13’+

Which is harder, 900 or impossible to late varial flip on flat?
zukodude487987 Those are two different kinda of tricks.
Yea one is a 900 the other is an impossible to late varial flip, i am asking compare the different level of difficulty in these 2 different tricks.
zukodude487987 I would say the 900 because well it's a fkn 900 degree turn, and if you master late flips you can add them more easily .. I think
the late flip.
hypothetically if you had a big enough ramp and enough time you could do a 900, though landing it is another thing.

Great video 👌
This video helped me a lot I watched it last night and did my first vert drop today I did it on a deep end of a pool to it took me a while to gain the confidence tho
First time I ever dropped in on vert was at the old Y in Encinitas. Started going down the slopes first in the street course back when it was smack against saxony.
nice video from the boss, keeping it real AF. respect.
I was learning vert for the first time yesterday and it's so much scarier than it looks. I feel super hard and im already very bruised, I was skating for about 3 hours and before we left I finally got it but I was so mad at at myself for how long it took me.
You should be proud that you actually did it. Standing on that deck is terrifying. NIce work!
Here's some good advise, I just started skating vert less than a year ago. First time I dropped in was with my old street board with small ass wheels and loose ass trucks. Made it first try but was a lil wobbly. What you want is like a 8-8.5 deck with independent truck the same width or something similar possibly harder bushings, and 58mm-60mm wheels. If you can drop in on a smaller ramp you can do a vert ramp its not that bad skated street my whole life and now I'm getting into vert, been getting some airs over the coping already,stalls/grinds still scare the shit out of me though.and wear a helmet you will bust your head open
