    I hear a lot of people say something along the lines of Wilt deciding he had to pass the ball in order to win a championship. There is at least a portion of his assist increase that can be attributed to having teammates that can get the job done when the ball is passed to them.

    • @pebutts
      @pebutts 11 днів тому

      When Wilt came into the league, the Warriors were really struggling on the floor but more importantly in attendance and there was very real concern that the team would go under. The Warriors wanted Wilt to be on the floor and score as much as possible in order to get people to come to the games. The strategy worked and Philly, in addition to improving on the court, did much better at the gate and the franchise was able to continue when other teams were going out of business.
      The model of Wilt as the do it all player kept going until Alex Hannum took over as coach in 1963. He recognized (like Phil Jackson and Tex Winter would many years later with another transcendent player) that the team would be better if they didn't focus only on Wilt. He asked Chamberlain to spread the scoring around to make the team less predictable and harder to stop in the playoffs. Wilt, to his credit, agreed and after scoring 45 points a game the prior season scored eight points less a game, but the team got better, especially in the playoffs.

    If basketball was a one-on-one sport, Wilt would be the top of the pops. No one would be able to come close. Not Shaq, not Jordan, not James, not West. No one. The problem is that basketball ISN'T a one-on-one sport, and consolidating your individual targets and thresholds means nothing if it comes at the cost of disrupting the four others on your team. It isn't just about stats: not assists, not rebounds, not blocks. It's about how you can get your numbers without taking away from your teammates. On that, Michael Jordan and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar are the only ones I know who have had that level of "selfishness" translate into success ... and Mike is the only one who did it more than once.

    Wilt was getting offers to come back and play for an NBA team in the late 80s. Imagine a player 15 years away from retirement still getting offers from pro teams.
    I could see why someone would choose Kareem or Russell over him for a center career, but at their absolute bests I'd give it to Wilt for his overall package. Wilt 1967 is the peak year for a center in my view. The combination of individual dominance + versatility, and team accomplishment as the best player that year - along with being the only one to knock off a healthy Russell in a playoff series was remarkable.

    • @c99kfm
      @c99kfm Місяць тому

      Yes. '67 Wilt had everything in greater quality and quantity than anyone before or since. His "gravity" was enormous, and with him focused on assisting, blocking and rebounding , his teammates could score at will. He averaged 21 points, 29 rebounds and 9 assists in the playoffs, on 58% FG%, while playing 47.9 minutes per game. In the 1969-1970 season, Wilt injured his knee and was never at his physical peak again.
      And it was not only Russell who got knocked off, it was the entire Celtics super-team. There were, apart from Russell, another 7 future hall-of-famers on that Celtics roster.

    To score 100 with no 3 point line requires you to score 2.1 points per minute, the entire game, against another professional team that was trying to prevent him from reaching that mark. Even if you took an NBA player and put them on a college or highschool team, it would still be tough to accomplish, simply based on reaching 100 points in time.
    Now, to average 50 points per game, for an entire NBA season, required him to average scoring 1 point per minute for 3,456 consecutive minutes, with no 3 point line.
    Then, in the same season, to also average 25 rebounds per game, required him to get 1 rebound in 1,728 of those 3,456 minutes. Wilt's career rebounds per game average is higher than anyone else in NBA history has been able to average in one season.

    Blocked Kareem's sky hook at the end of (Wilt's) his career. At the peak of the ball's trajectory. In crappy shoes. Averaged over 48 minutes/games for the entire system. At that size. In crappy shoes. Tex Winter tells the story of witnessing Wilt in college dunking free throws. He made calls and the new free throw rule -- play the release, but shooter must wait for the ball to touch the rim -- was introduced. When they change the rules to make it harder for you? That's Wilt. P.S. He'd make today's players look like bad competition. Wilt could easily dominate in this league. We'd act like no one has ever seen anyone like him.

    • @GBU61
      @GBU61 3 місяці тому +1

      Wilt was responsible for 4 rules changes which in each case was designed to make the game harder for him. In Wilt’s own words, he told Jordan the rules were made easier for him, which by the time Jordan came along, the NBA was changing into an entertainment first, sport second philosophy. The thing no one ever seems to bring up is Wilt got 50 rebounds against Russell, who no one’s give enough credit for how great he was. If there was any knock on Wilt, it was his inability to get his team to rise to the occasion when it mattered. But for pure awesomeness as a player, I would take Wilt over anyone.

In pro volleyball he reinvented himself and trimmed his physique into a slim sculpted physique in his 40's... I wonder if pro volleyball measured his standing vertical. Ever notice how those early MLB pitchers were puttin' up some ridiculous numbers? Nowadays if a guy wins 300 games that's rightfully considered a world-class HOF level career. But Cy Young won _500+_ games in his day. Do any of us really think that he or Walter "Big Train" Johnson were better than say, Greg Maddux? Roger Clemens? Warren Spahn? Of course not. Know why? Because the game was in its infancy in Cy's day and guys hadn't mastered the mechanics of pitching yet, thus they weren't throwing hard enough to blow their arms out and as such were able to pitch outrageous amounts of innings culminating in equally outrageous win totals. Wilt is the NBA equivalent of that. He was playing when the game was in its fledgling stage which is why his statistics are so over the top.
    In the 80's-90's era (aka, the Golden Age of basketball) Chamberlain would have been a consistent 25-15-4 guy and a certain HOFer but wouldn't have been putting up anywhere NEAR the ludicrous numbers he was droppin' back in the '50's-60's.

      That's totally different. We had to base thing off what batters said like with Walter Johnson. They all said Johnson threw the hardest. But it was still just here say. With wilt we have proof we have his 40 yard dash numbers, his vertical, his bench press. Based on your avatar Im guessing your a jordab fan? How wouldn't a 7'1 that runs 4.6 in the 40 and with a vert close to jordan and benches around 500. Who is stopping that today or any time? When I hear people not have Wilt in their top 10 and put Duncan, Hakeem or Jabar as the best center of all time I just laugh. They were all one dimensional in comparison to Wilt. 1st he blocked Jabar's sky hook 3Xs in one game in his Lew Alcinder days. One stat people never bring up is in Wilt's entire basketball life: HS, College and Pros, he Never Fouled out in a game. What grace that took for such a strong man. That's why he's in my top 5 as center. And the late great Kobe had this as his top 5 (God rest his soul): Magic, Jordan, Bird, LeBron and Chamberlain. All for obvious reasons. They were all the best at what they did. Magic could cover for an injured Jabar at Center and made everyone else look better. Jordan and Bird for their sheer will to win. LeBron could play all 5 positions. And Chamberlain with all his strength could still play Guard for the Harlem Globetrotters.

    Although Chamberlain accumulated some of the most-impressive statistics in the history of professional sports, he was often called selfish and a loser because he won only two NBA championships and lost seven out of eight playoff series against Bill Russell's Celtics teams.
    Rick Barry wrote:
    I'll say what most players feel, which is that Wilt is a loser ... He is terrible in big games. He knows he is going to lose and be blamed for the loss, so he dreads it, and you can see it in his eyes; and anyone who has ever played with him will agree with me, regardless of whether they would admit it publicly ... When it comes down to the closing minutes of a tough game, an important game, he doesn't want the ball, he doesn't want any part of the pressure. It is at these times that greatness is determined and Wilt doesn't have it. There is no way you can compare him to a pro like a Bill Russell or a Jerry West ... these are clutch competitors.

    Wilt for sure, he did things no big man ever did. Even smaller players could do. Hdd Ed could of been a weight lifter, he was a volleyball champion, he could been a decatheol champion. He still holds 50records. What other player let alone a big man could do. Why is it no one giv Ed s Russell his do. People don’t understand if you played. Russell’s job was all defense . Reds philosophy was to funnel the offense to the middle where Russell was, taking away the outside. They could not penetrate. Then when he blocked the shot he kept the ball alive. Then after all that get the oulet pass to Cousy and started the fast break. Plus they were steam there’s no more team play just 30 ft jumpers and dunks. That’s why 11 champioships You will never see that again that team play at its best. Yes Kareem was great but he was a shooter only Now we come to Shaw . He was a brute . All he could do was man handle you . Everytime he got the ball he committed a foul . He committed a charge. He had no shot but a dunk. Not even a 5ft jump shot. He couldn’t shoot foul shots neither could Wilt. But foul shots are practice practice practice. If you don’t put the time in it won’t happen. Bird avg. 90’/, but took 200 to 300 after every practice that’s why. Yes Shak got 4 champioships but he had Kobe. Shak should be ashamed of himself to compare himself to Wilt, Russell. or Kareem Shaw never put the time in if he did and the calls were more fair he never would of achieved what he did. You know it Shaq give credit where credit is due!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    It's funny. The Case has tried to be made that Shaq Shaq was more dominant than Wilt. This was of course only made by Shaq himself because he lacks any humility. Every other gray, including the invincible Bill Russell, say that Wilt is the most dominant player of all time. Occasionally it is said that wilt played against little guys. Well, in the 1960s the average height of an NBA player was exactly the same as it is today. Every other night, Wil was playing against a 7 foot Hall of Fame center. Never mind today, when we played they had to change the free throw rule before he came into the league Because he could take one step behind the following line and then jump and dunk the ball. Yes, this is a fact. They also changed the goaltending rules, added the three second violation, and widened the lane. All because of Chamberlain. And forget today. With the current rules of no handchecking, and the ability of players like LeBron, Dončić, Jokic, two simply bull their way to the basket, I would argue that even the Chamberlain back then without the advantages of current training, nutrition, footwear, etc. he would be even better. Face it, and if Embid becould put up 70+ against Wamby and routinely drag Golbert, can you imagine what Wilt would do? He might even have taken free throws more seriously. And as Steph Curry said, as far as the three Poynter goes "he would've figured that out too. I'm just happy he's not part of this current generation or he would change everything."
