just so it's clear, Sting has had one of the greatest careers in professional wrestling. and he has wrestled some of the biggest stars in the history of the business that being said...sometimes I wish the guy worked in WWE in his prime. He was wearing a tank top with a scorpion on the back which is when it finally clicked for me. I was predominately a WWF guy and was not too familiar with WCW guys. I knew of Sting, saw him on tv a handful of times, but because he was out of makeup, I didn’t put two and two together and after we were driving away and because of the location of the gas station, it was too late to turn around.
In one Interview, Brett said that he asked another wrestler to teach him the "Scorpion Deathlock" so that he could use it as a finisher. I don't remember who the wrestler was that taught it to him, but it may indicate that Brett liked Sting's work.
It was a Japanese wrestler who thought bret then him and his dad tweaked it to make it his own ...the original version is similar to the submission Edge used

@@rylandweet7750 Scorpian Deathlock is based on the actual original name though. Sasori-Gatame which directly translates as Scorpian hold (As the legs of the opponent look like a Scorpian's tail). Sharpshooter is named after Bret. Scorpian Deathlock is the actual english name for the move.
Sting and Bret never had any backstage heat with each other. They had mutual respect. Sting wouldn’t say multiple times that he liked Bret if he didn’t. Bret convinced Sting to stop doing the stage drop from the ceiling after Owen’s death. The fact is, many, many, many legit wrestlers don’t have a bad word to say about Bret. Hulk Hogan, Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, HHH, and HBK hate bret, but when you’re the best not everyone’s going to love you. Also when WCW was purchased by WWE they never really gave sting a shot. If I recall they brought sting in to do a couple jobs for triple H to build up HHH and the cut him. So the same people treated sting like crap too.
That's why sting didn't go to wwe for almost 15 years after wcw because he knew the wwe wouldn't give him the same respect as a talent as wcw did. Sting is one of the all time greats he seems to be in good enough shape for one more run.

Sting always had great energy and really pumped up the crowd. Had a great look to him, athletic, and pretty strong. Brett was also a great worker but was more of a technical wrestler that took the business very serious. His seriousness made the matches look very legit. Brett Was great at selling and understood that if he also made his opponents look great he would have great matches. I dont really care who came up with that finisher, they were both my favorites growing up (:
Yeah, that's basically why Sting was my favorite. Never was a technician, but he's one of the most charismatic wrestlers ever, and he was a great athlete on top of that. In terms of pure athleticism, he may have had better leaping ability than any other wrestler of his size. 6'2" 250lb dudes shouldn't have that kind of hang time...but Sting did! And it made high spots out of seemingly mundane moves like dropkicks and splashes. Along with the great gimmick, he was solid on the mic. Never had the "catchphrases" that get printed on T-shirts and move merchandise (but he did have the masks that used to just be everywhere), but he was a good actor. He was believable, well-spoken, and coherent in his interviews/promos, and it never felt phoned-in or stilted. I'd say Sting was a better promo than Bret and he had a better look. Better athlete too. Certainly not the technician, not a ring general, but just solid all around and exceptionally physically gifted.
Sting starting using that Finisher in the 1980s Year's before Bret Hart ever used. Sting learned it in New Japan which that's it's real Name The Scorpion Death-Lock and something else. Sting was huge in 87,88 and 1989 was when he exploded with the 50 minute draw with Ric Flair at Clash Of The Champions whih was up against Survivor Series or WrestleMania I think. And than with his Masterpiece vs Ric Flair where Flair put him on the Map I think it was Starrcade up vs Survivor Series which Vince threatened half the cable companies to not show it. And they did huge Numbers which that event blew out Survivor Series and I'm a WWF Guy. Send that's the Night sting wore The American Flag Color Face Paint and that Attire and Won The NWA World's Heavyweight Championship. And in the Clash Of The Champions match in 1989 or 88 Sting was all in Pink with Black Scorpion. So Bret Hart bit off Sting Big time and attire and finishing move. And the only reason people call it the Sharpshooter send think Bret used it first was cuz The WWF was world Wide and Vince knew how to promote as NWA and WCW was stuck in the South for Year's.

Robert you realize that sting never drew money despite being respected and such right, every time they put the title on him the company bled money, so they had to take it off. As much as people praise him, he never generated anything. No one will ever forget Bret the guy was pretty much the fall back guy in WWE every time someone failed or lost the company money he pulled the company back and kept it afloat. Remember when Flair, Kevin Nash, Michaels, Yoko, and even Taker has the belt and the company lost revenue, yes during that time wrestling was losing money but Bret actually kept it afloat and drew more money. Technically one could argue Bret is the only one to do the Sharpshooter since he places his left leg between his opponent's legs and turn to the left while everybody else do it with the right leg and turning on the right which would be the Scorpion Deathlock :p And Bret is not even lefthanded to justify this. Sting & Brett Hart were both terrific wrestlers. Loved both of these guys. They also worked well together in the ring with their matches & when they tag teamed together.
You really thought the feud was that good? I thought it had its moments but ultimately was lackluster considering what all they could have done with the feud and the places they could have gone with it. I think they really missed the boat, for one reason or another, on creating one of the most legendary feuds in the history of wrestling with the two of them. I think they ultimately should have had a hold vs hold match. Scorpion Death Lock vs The Sharpshooter. That would have been a natural finish to the feud to settle it. But I'm not sure if either one of them would have wanted to do the job to their own hold. And well, we all know how Bret can be when it comes to losing a match in any fashion sometimes.
Sting would've been happy to job for Bret, knowing Bret's propensity to throw a bitch fit whenever things don't go the way he wants them to go. Sting on the other hand is a team player who puts his company first, is willing to lose when the script and booker tell him to lose and never whines about it like Bret does.

Bret and Sting should have been one for the ages. I remember being more excited for their match at Halloween Havoc than Hogan and Warrior 2 but the feud just fizzled out bc WCW dropped the ball.
Sting is a super solid guy. Always respectful. The most interesting thing of his career is he went undefeated (29-0) in AEW while going winless (0-2) in WWE.
according to Bret's book, after he split from Anvil and went off on his own, Bret was in need of a finisher. So Vince, or was it someone else I can't remember who, advised Bret to seek out this Mexican wrestler and learn this submission move known as the "Scorpion Deathlock" from him. After that, Vince and Bret threw out a bunch of different names for the finishing hold like "Executioner," the "Eliminator," and finally Bret spit out "The Shapshooter," which they went with. So Bret never took credit for inventing, nor did he give Sting the creative credit. It was clearly around before either of them started wrestling
Rugged Ronnie Garvin used that submission hold in the WWF before Bret Hart. Interestingly, Garvin had a feud with Greg The Hammer Valentine who used the figure four leg-lock and in the NWA Sting had a feud with Nature Boy Ric Flair who also used the figure four leg-lock. (On a side note, Valentine and Flair were a tag team in the late 70's.)

If you watch wwf the wrestling classic Adrian Adonis did the scorpion move before either Sting or Bret did. Also I saw Ted Dibiase use that hold before Bret did, as well as Ronnie Garvin. So Bret came in later on with the Scorpion.
The earliest I ever seen ot used was Gentleman Chris Adams in World Class. To be honest though, I think he was going for a Texas Cloverleaf and screwed it up.
I remember the first time I saw Sting was when he was Eddie Gilbert's bodyguard. He played a heel very well, but the thing was...he had a natural charisma that put him over with fans. He had no choice, but to become a face. I remember those days of watching wrestling every Saturday night when the Von Erich's, Dusty Rhodes, etc...would come on for 3 hours. The hosts were Joe Presciano and Bonnie Blackstone. How do I remember this? Missy Hyatt was Eddie's girlfriend. I was about three years old when this was on. I have no idea, how I remember this stuff.
I remember that too. Sting, Eddie Gilbert, Rick Steiner and Missy Hyatt. Eddie Gilbert was the t.v champ and said he would wrestle anybody in the top 10. So the promoter said he had to wrestle Sting. Sting was ranked #7. I think Sting won the belt. I can't remember if he did.
Bret Hart was also on WWF during the early years and Sting was on WCW, so that is a big reason why so many people think that Sting does the sharpshooter when it's really the scorpion death lock. WWF was just always the bigger promotion and seen in more places around the world.

Also the name Scorpion Deathlock is very fitting for a Wrestler named Sting, a wrestler who incorporated Scorpion designs into all of his costume. Sharp Shooter sounds much more fitting for a wrestler named the Hitman, although the name Scorpion Deathlock could be at least somewhat appropriate for a Wrestler with the monkier, "The HItman."
I loved their wcw feud. They had some great chemistry. Sting eventually one uped Bret with his new finisher. The scorpion death drop was and still is my favorite variation of the DDT

Sting is the only other wrestler, other than Bret, that I've seen put the Scorpion Deathlock on properly. Those two always put the hold on nice and tight. A lot of wrestlers, Shawn Michaels and the Rock come to mind specifically, always put the hold on too loose, IMO.

Technically speaking, Sting was using the Scorpion Deathlock before Bret was using it. It originated in Japan as the "Scorpion hold" because of the way the opponent's leg is bent, resembling a Scorpion's tail. The only reason why some fans associate the move with Hart is because of WWE being a larger corporate entity than the NWA or WCW until 1996. The Scorpion Hold will always be the Scorpion Deathlock to me.

He was wearing a tank top with a scorpion on the back which is when it finally clicked for me. I was predominately a WWF guy and was not too familiar with WCW guys. I knew of Sting, saw him on tv a handful of times, but because he was out of makeup, I didn’t put two and two together and after we were driving away and because of the location of the gas station, it was too late to turn around.

In one Interview, Brett said that he asked another wrestler to teach him the "Scorpion Deathlock" so that he could use it as a finisher. I don't remember who the wrestler was that taught it to him, but it may indicate that Brett liked Sting's work.

Sting and Bret never had any backstage heat with each other. They had mutual respect. Sting wouldn’t say multiple times that he liked Bret if he didn’t. Bret convinced Sting to stop doing the stage drop from the ceiling after Owen’s death. The fact is, many, many, many legit wrestlers don’t have a bad word to say about Bret. Hulk Hogan, Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, HHH, and HBK hate bret, but when you’re the best not everyone’s going to love you. Also when WCW was purchased by WWE they never really gave sting a shot. If I recall they brought sting in to do a couple jobs for triple H to build up HHH and the cut him. So the same people treated sting like crap too.
That's why sting didn't go to wwe for almost 15 years after wcw because he knew the wwe wouldn't give him the same respect as a talent as wcw did. Sting is one of the all time greats he seems to be in good enough shape for one more run.

I always wondered on how well they actually got along.

Its actually the stinger, that's the original name the wrestlers kept calling him sting.
Sting always had great energy and really pumped up the crowd. Had a great look to him, athletic, and pretty strong.
Brett was also a great worker but was more of a technical wrestler that took the business very serious. His seriousness made the matches look very legit. Brett Was great at selling and understood that if he also made his opponents look great he would have great matches. I dont really care who came up with that finisher, they were both my favorites growing up (:
Yeah, that's basically why Sting was my favorite. Never was a technician, but he's one of the most charismatic wrestlers ever, and he was a great athlete on top of that. In terms of pure athleticism, he may have had better leaping ability than any other wrestler of his size. 6'2" 250lb dudes shouldn't have that kind of hang time...but Sting did! And it made high spots out of seemingly mundane moves like dropkicks and splashes. Along with the great gimmick, he was solid on the mic. Never had the "catchphrases" that get printed on T-shirts and move merchandise (but he did have the masks that used to just be everywhere), but he was a good actor. He was believable, well-spoken, and coherent in his interviews/promos, and it never felt phoned-in or stilted. I'd say Sting was a better promo than Bret and he had a better look. Better athlete too. Certainly not the technician, not a ring general, but just solid all around and exceptionally physically gifted.
Sting starting using that Finisher in the 1980s Year's before Bret Hart ever used. Sting learned it in New Japan which that's it's real Name The Scorpion Death-Lock and something else. Than when Bret became a Singles Wrestler in Mid 1991 he asked the Guys in the Locker room if they could teach him how to do that Finisher. Whivh he claims he only saw it in Japan again Bret Hart lies like a Bastard. When this is 1991 and Sting is a Huge Ass Superstar Bigger than Bret Hart ever was especially than. Bret was a nobody even after he finally got the Belt but you can say his top year's we're in 93-94 and WWF was st an all-time low with him as Champion. And Sting became a Star in the 1980s while Bret was in a Tag Team from 85-91. Sting was huge in 87,88 and 1989 was when he exploded with the 50 minute draw with Ric Flair at Clash Of The Champions whih was up against Survivor Series or WrestleMania I think. And than with his Masterpiece vs Ric Flair where Flair put him on the Map I think it was Starrcade up vs Survivor Series which Vince threatened half the cable companies to not show it. And they did huge Numbers which that event blew out Survivor Series and I'm a WWF Guy. Send that's the Night sting wore The American Flag Color Face Paint and that Attire and Won The NWA World's Heavyweight Championship. And in the Clash Of The Champions match in 1989 or 88 Sting was all in Pink with Black Scorpion. So Bret Hart bit off Sting Big time and attire and finishing move. And the only reason people call it the Sharpshooter send think Bret used it first was cuz The WWF was world Wide and Vince knew how to promote as NWA and WCW was stuck in the South for Year's.

Scorpion Death Lock was before the Sharpshooter. Sting was using it while Bret was still doing tag team matches and the Hart Foundation finisher.

Robert you realize that sting never drew money despite being respected and such right, every time they put the title on him the company bled money, so they had to take it off. As much as people praise him, he never generated anything. No one will ever forget Bret the guy was pretty much the fall back guy in WWE every time someone failed or lost the company money he pulled the company back and kept it afloat. Remember when Flair, Kevin Nash, Michaels, Yoko, and even Taker has the belt and the company lost revenue, yes during that time wrestling was losing money but Bret actually kept it afloat and drew more money. Also the guy made Austin put him over and is widely regarded as the pros pro, the damn dude is a legend all over the world. Sting love the guy but no don’t be changing history you can’t it takes maybe 20 minutes to look stuff up and realize you are wrong try it.
So Bret Hart "kept it afloat" when WWF was losing money, but Sting was "bleeding money?" WWF was nearly out of business in 1997 with Hart on top.

Sting & Brett Hart were both terrific wrestlers. Loved both of these guys. They also worked well together in the ring with their matches & when they tag teamed together.
Their feud in 98 still remains my all time favourite.
You really thought the feud was that good? I thought it had its moments but ultimately was lackluster considering what all they could have done with the feud and the places they could have gone with it. I think they really missed the boat, for one reason or another, on creating one of the most legendary feuds in the history of wrestling with the two of them. I think they ultimately should have had a hold vs hold match. Scorpion Death Lock vs The Sharpshooter. That would have been a natural finish to the feud to settle it. But I'm not sure if either one of them would have wanted to do the job to their own hold. And well, we all know how Bret can be when it comes to losing a match in any fashion sometimes.
Sting would've been happy to job for Bret, knowing Bret's propensity to throw a bitch fit whenever things don't go the way he wants them to go. Sting on the other hand is a team player who puts his company first, is willing to lose when the script and booker tell him to lose and never whines about it like Bret does.

And he even called Vince McMahon crying 😢 asking him to please tell Bret that he refused to let him out if his contract but the truth was Owen didn't want to leave he was happy in WWF & knew about the stories of WCW & that Bret would probably be okay but he could be screwing over his Career & Life for his family which you saw Bret Hart wasn't ok in WCW he did shit & Bulldog & Anvil Wrestled 1-2 matches Bulldog got hurt & they got fired less than a Year. according to Bret's book, after he split from Anvil and went off on his own, Bret was in need of a finisher. So Vince, or was it someone else I can't remember who, advised Bret to seek out this Mexican wrestler and learn this submission move known as the "Scorpion Deathlock" from him. After that, Vince and Bret threw out a bunch of different names for the finishing hold like "Executioner," the "Eliminator," and finally Bret spit out "The Shapshooter," which they went with. So Bret never took credit for inventing, nor did he give Sting the creative credit. It was clearly around before either of them started wrestling

Rugged Ronnie Garvin used that submission hold in the WWF before Bret Hart. Interestingly, Garvin had a feud with Greg The Hammer Valentine who used the figure four leg-lock and in the NWA Sting had a feud with Nature Boy Ric Flair who also used the figure four leg-lock. (On a side note, Valentine and Flair were a tag team in the late 70's.)

If you watch wwf the wrestling classic Adrian Adonis did the scorpion move before either Sting or Bret did. Also I saw Ted Dibiase use that hold before Bret did, as well as Ronnie Garvin. So Bret came in later on with the Scorpion.
The earliest I ever seen ot used was Gentleman Chris Adams in World Class. To be honest though, I think he was going for a Texas Cloverleaf and screwed it up.
I remember the first time I saw Sting was when he was Eddie Gilbert's bodyguard. He played a heel very well, but the thing was...he had a natural charisma that put him over with fans. He had no choice, but to become a face. I remember those days of watching wrestling every Saturday night when the Von Erich's, Dusty Rhodes, etc...would come on for 3 hours. I remember that too. Sting, Eddie Gilbert, Rick Steiner and Missy Hyatt. Eddie Gilbert was the t.v champ and said he would wrestle anybody in the top 10. So the promoter said he had to wrestle Sting. Sting was ranked #7. I think Sting won the belt. I can't remember if he did.
Bret Hart was also on WWF during the early years and Sting was on WCW, so that is a big reason why so many people think that Sting does the sharpshooter when it's really the scorpion death lock. WWF was just always the bigger promotion and seen in more places around the world.

I don't recall Bret using the sharpshooter before be went solo in the 1990's but Sting was using the scorpion deathlock back in the 1980's.
they are completely different moves.

it's simple marketing. "Sharp shooter" is an easier, shorter and catchier name for people to remember and recall
Also the name Scorpion Deathlock is very fitting for a Wrestler named Sting, a wrestler who incorporated Scorpion designs into all of his costume. Sharp Shooter sounds much more fitting for a wrestler named the Hitman, although the name Scorpion Deathlock could be at least somewhat appropriate for a Wrestler with the monkier, "The HItman."
I loved their wcw feud. They had some great chemistry. Sting eventually one uped Bret with his new finisher. The scorpion death drop was and still is my favorite variation of the DDT
Scorpion Deathlock sounds cooler than The Sharpshooter
Every true wrestling fan knows Bret steps in with right leg for the sharpshooter and Sting steps in with the left for the SDL.
Its the other way around.
Sting has class. Him and Taker seem to have a lot in common including not fighting each other at Wrestlemania =D
And the funny thing is Brett says Sting had the scorpion deathlock first and then Brett came out with the sharpshooter-a slightly modified version-later. How the two maneuvers are different? I don’t know.
Sting is the only other wrestler, other than Bret, that I've seen put the Scorpion Deathlock on properly. Those two always put the hold on nice and tight. A lot of wrestlers, Shawn Michaels and the Rock come to mind specifically, always put the hold on too loose, IMO.
Yeah it does annoy me that people say sting "uses the sharpshooter" when in fact sting was doing the scorpion desthlock well before Brett started using the sharpshooter and brett Michaels has openly stated that the sharpshooter was an intentional copy of stings scorpion deathlock
Technically speaking, Sting was using the Scorpion Deathlock before Bret was using it.
It originated in Japan as the "Scorpion hold" because of the way the opponent's leg is bent, resembling a Scorpion's tail.
The only reason why some fans associate the move with Hart is because of WWE being a larger corporate entity than the NWA or WCW until 1996.
The Scorpion Hold will always be the Scorpion Deathlock to me.
I believe Bret was able to use the SharpShooter as a Defense/Reversal hold which was awesome.
