    How to use Google Earth to find great destinations in the Florida Keys for snorkeling, fishing, grilling & chillin, scuba diving, spearfishing, and catching lobster.

    What to bring
    www.amazon.com...
    This video will focus on Lower Keys including Big Pine Key, Ramrod Key, Big and Little Torch Key, Cudjoe Key, the Contents Keys, Snipe Key, and Summerland Key area. I recommend Florida Marine Tracks for navigating back country but if Google Earth is all you have it can help you navigate using the water color as depth indication. Remember to always keep an eye on the tide movements and just because you safely cross in the morning does not necessarily mean that can cross in the evening. The tide is known to move 2 or more feet in and out regularly in the islands.
    Finding Coral
    Finding Coral to dive is a fun way to look forward to your trip to the islands. You can do this in your map application on your iphone as well. The Coral will be dark circles with white sandy circles around them where the fish have eaten away the vegetation surrounding the rock. Drop a pin on the really good looking spots. The good news is you will have reception in most areas in the Florida Keys until you get about 10 miles offshore.
    Mangrove Islands
    The Mangrove islands in the Keys are beautiful and a crucial part of the habitat. They are a nursery for the smaller fish to thrive before they move offshore as they grow. You will still see some large fish around the mangroves though including sharks, barracuda, snook , tarpon, snapper, grouper, and redfish along with many more species. Crabs and Lobster live in the holes in the mud and in the root balls. The tidal current provides them with an abundant supply of food and the mangroves provide them with cover to rest and hide during the day.
    American Shoals Lighthouse
    A great place to spend the afternoon swimming and diving with the family or friends after a hot day of fishing offshore.
    Looe Key
    Our favorite diving spot just off the coast of Big Pine and always a hit with our guests. Grab your girls hand and take her for a swim with the local sharks and turtles and hundreds of species of creatures that call it home. Try and leave it like you found it. The reefs of the Florida Keys are a national treasure and very fragile.
    Snipe Point
    Snipe Point is a beach on the Gulf Side of the island chain and quite a little run (about 10 miles) if you cut through the back country. Add another 10 miles if you have to go the long way around. I high recommend Florida Marine Tracks for navigating Back Country in the Florida Keys. See link below.

    Dude! I'm so glad I found you. What you do in this video is like a fantasy dream for me. I learned a lot from this video. I'm going to watch it again so it will all sink in. This was a great overview. I'm just a little confused because I'm totally new to this. Perhaps as a suggestion is not to take anything for granted, by that I mean don't assume everyone watching knows what you mean. I'm saying break it down so anyone will know what your saying. Another thing, this is so much to take in. Perhaps have a video for the person just starting out. For example, Coming down the highway to Key West (name of the highway), where to stop, where to park your trailer and launch your boat. From there, where to get bait, where to hotel, sleep, eat, or can you rent a boat, equipment, fill up air tanks, and perhaps, for a beginner, say start here, it's a great place to snorkel catch lobster fish, spear fish, park for the night? I'm saying lay out a complete agenda for a first timer to follow to the letter. There are people who have a paid subscription package on youtube for expats to visit overseas such as Vietnam, Thailand, Philipines, etc.and they have a package all set up like a formula for beginners to follow start to finish. Something like that people will pay for. Perhaps a focus on the boating aspect, and equipment. Anyway, thanks so much, this video is a blessing.

    Wildman, great video! As a new resident here (on the Gulf side down by MM10) always trying to figure out how to find good fishing spots in the backcountry. Haven't quite mastered Google Earth and the depths here are tricky. How about a tutorial on bait usage for targeting fish (i.e.; use X for this species with a #5 circle hook, etc.) That would be awesome! Nice work.

    Good video. I'd be interested in seeing a video talking about the different hazards or things to think about when navigating the Keys.... Will be spending a week down there in a few months so trying be prepared.

      Best advise I can give you is buy a Florida Marine Tracks card for your GPS and you won’t have to guess. It’s the best navigational aid for the region. Will save your lower unit and make the overall experience more enjoyable because you will have confidence while on the after in new territory.

    One of these for those of us without a watercraft would be good. Like, a wading version.

    • @WildmanWarehouse
      @WildmanWarehouse  3 роки тому

      Most rentals on VRBO in the Florida Keys include a kayak or SUP. I’d recommend renting a house on the water with a paddle boat of some sort included or renting a boat. Lots of rental boats available in the keys by the day or by the week. It is well worth the money. The Florida Keys is best experienced by boat. I don’t have a lot of experience wade fishing but I’m sure that you could keep tight lines at any Channel with light tackle and shrimp. Mangrove snapper are everywhere!

    I am going down there next week with the family. The only knowledge I have is months and months of youtubing. And, this is the first that actually helped me get an idea of where I’ll actually be headed. I’m renting a boat and want to get at least one lobster(get that and I told myself I’d be happy). However, I can’t dive that too deep due to health restrictions. Where was that at 1:16? Was that at the coordinates shown just before the clip? Can you spear out there on looe key? :D

    • @WildmanWarehouse
      @WildmanWarehouse  3 роки тому

      You cannot spear on Looe Key. It’s a protected Park area. But if you go outside of the buoys to the west you can. It’s a lot of grassy sandy bottom but there is structure and reef here and there and you’ll float over a hogfish if your patient. The spots I zoomed in at the beginning of the clip hold a few hogfish and grouper too but they get hit often because they are so close to land. Put a bag of chum out while you spearfish and you’ll double your bag.

    How about some decent fishing spots for bottom fishing with kids. Like deep holes with coral bottom that aren't a super long ride from cudjo key.

    • @WildmanWarehouse
      @WildmanWarehouse  4 роки тому +1

      The mangrove island I zoom in the video is packed with mangrove snapper. You will have to chum them up but that’s a great spot to take the kids if it’s rough offshore. If it’s not rough I’d run out straight South four miles between Looe Key and American Shoals. The reef runs all way down the edge between 30-120’. You’ll see schools of Yellowtail on the finder. The main thing you want to remember is chumming is the Key in the keys. The fish are more spread out and chumming brings them in concentrated. I have another video showing how to yellowtail snapper fish. I don’t have spots because the fish are everywhere down there. You can pick just about any random spot to cross the reed offshore and run down the reef line in 90’ of water and you’ll mark fish before you go 100 yards. It’s a lot easier if you have a gps anchor trolling motor.

    We are staying in Marathon for a week and then open to a couple days in another spot. Can you recommend shallow snorkeling areas for us and also which other spot to find some as well after we leave marathon? Cudjoe area or Islamorada etc

    • @WildmanWarehouse
      @WildmanWarehouse  3 роки тому

      Such a hard choice between Cudjoe and Islamorada. We names our boat after Looe Key a reef just four miles from Cudjoe but Islamorada is some of my favorite Spearfishing grounds. You really cannot go wrong either way. There are a couple of reef recommendations in my video for the Cudjoe area. Also an easy thing to do is spot a light house and head towards it. There will always be a reef and life as well as mooring buoys around the lighthouses.

      As long as you keep it between the markers you'll be fine. Go and visit Looe Key! Try and visit picnic island as well. Offshore fishing I'd recommend hiring a captain and doing a charter for at least a day. Two Conchs is a little north of you guys in Marathon but that is where i would go.
