Thank you! Im going to Marathon for our first keys trip ever. Cant wait to try the patch reef fishing and bridge fishing. This video was extrfemely helpful.
Love the new channel. I just passed you on my way back home. I spent the month of March in Big Pine and had to deal with the wind. Thanks for the info on the patch reefs and how to find and fish them. I have always wanted to do this with my granddaughter. We spend at least 2 to 4 weeks at a time and 2 to 4 times a year there. I can't wait to retire and move there permanently!
I grew up in Hollywood fishing Islamorada, Marathon but live in Atlanta. I make it down every couple of years to fish and always get a back country guide, a bridge Tarpon guide but this year in April we are coming down to rent a house (somewhere) preferably on a canal, rent a CC boat for the week and venture out to the patch reefs. This is helpful and appreciated!!
I moved down to Homestead about a year ago but have had little luck fishing from shore. If you ever need a person to go and wet a hook with I'm always game. Good info and appreciate the insights.
Great video bro! We haven't had to much luck since moving here 3 years ago. Hopefully now I can get on some fish and keep my son from getting bored lol.
So stoked to find this knowledge, great stuff I will use w/ the family in a couple of weeks. The wind forecast part was nice for the first time vessel operator there.
Wow just found this channel. You sound like Heiko. Didn't know you have 3 channels. Congratulations on that. Although i live in Tennessee now I'm closer to Florida. I am a California native fishing occasionally in the Pacific ocean, surf and charters. All my life I've fished fresh water for trout in the Sierra Nevada mountains. My husband and I plan on coming to Florida within the next few months so the more knowledge I can get the better. We probably will be going on a charter or two. We have a 16' boat but don't know if we would put it in salt water, maybe in Lake Okachobe. Anyway I'll be watching this channel in addition to your other channels. Love all your enthusiasm and insight in sharing.❤
love the content, wish i could fish Florida but you can’t beat the big reds Rockfish and cobia of the Chesapeake. I want to start recording some of my trips Thanks to y’all.
Greetings from Idaho. This is a very informative video. I'm headed to Marathon this fall to fish. Renting a bay boat for a week. Fishing hard and doing it solo. Excellent advice.
Wow Heiko!!! I just learned so much from this video...This 2nd channel is gonna be so 🔥🔥💯, what a brilliant addition! I am so pumped for you Bro. Stay Up Mane 🎣💜
Man I really enjoyed your insight...it'll be great to learn about the moon phase days and more weather patterns down there. I'm headed down to the Spanish Harbor Bridge area and I noticed this weekend is going to be windy from the East...but the tides are going to be very good. I'd like to see your tactics around there on your experiences. What fish are common this time of year?
I'm 64 years old disabled person I don't eat fish but I would like to catch 2 or 3 lobster bully netting once in a while, we're can i go to catch, that it would be easy for me i do have a small boat and my wife helps me alot thank you for your time doing the videos
Thanks for this style of video. I'm headed down in mid June and was thinking about renting a boat and wetting a line. This was perfect. Any tips on renting boats and buying gear down there? Bait tackel what a guy might bring or buy? Rods are tough to bring. thanks
Question, do you have to be at least 3 miles from the coast for fishing? I just moved to Key Largo and a neighbor said that to me, to be sure to be outside the 3 miles line
If your still waiting on your boat and wanna run out. I got a 17’ bay boat we can run out on. I run down to the keys all the time. Let me know if your bored.
How deep should you begin looking for patch reefs because they seem to be abundant as soon as you go east even a half mile out in 20-30 ft but all I ever catch there is grunts galore
If the seas are flat, do you think it's safe to run my 12ft skiff out to some patch reefs? Never been to the keys and am planning a trip for this summer, if the patch reefs aren't a good idea I'll just stick to the back country
Heiko, I'm looking at google maps (just as you did) and I see the patch reefs off key largo (just as you showed). But in looking off islamorada upper and lower matecumbe on google maps, I'm not really seeing any patch reefs compared to key largo (except cheeks rocks and hens and chickens which are mostly for snorkeling). So, I'm looking at google maps and not really finding them off islamorada compared to key largo. Am I not looking right or are they not really there (dark areas surrounded by white areas indicating reef/rock, not just other stuff)?
Very informative. I'm from the PNW and am planning a trip to S FL, possibly March 2023. I've fished in FL a couple times but it's been a while. This time I'm planning to get a boat for a couple days and DIY it. Thank you for the tips. How about fly fishing options in addition to your patch reef tutorial?
WAY WAY too much screen & mouse movements for almost TEN minutes. Gave me vertigo and reminded me of a toiling Powerpoint presentation from the 1990s. Yet highly informative if you can weather the storm.
Nice Heiko! Great tips, I just moved to an apartment just down the street from the key largo fisheries restraunt on the canal. I just ordered one of the old town motorized fishing kayaks and am looking forward to going patch reef fishing on those slick calm days that we will have more and more of soon here as these winter winds stop soon. Keep up the great work, and I hope this second channel of yours has as much success as your first has had!
You give great information this is what you always should do I like your channel I want to fish with you one day I'm going to move down to Stuart Florida I hope to see you there
This is a great video for visitors like myself. Can we spearfish the patch reefs with Hawaiian slings? If not where can we spearfish? Heading to Marathon in a few days. Thank you!
Super informative video! Appreciate the insight. A buddy and I will be down your way this Fri-Sun if you ever meet up with subscribers? Would be cool to link up with some like minded, local fishing enthusiasts while there. We’ll be bringing our own boat. LMK if interested!
Great video! Any tips for fishing Tavernier in mid summer? I'm under the impression that the fish move to deeper water. How deep? Should I focus more on the bay side to do some flats fishing? Will be there on vacation in mid June. Any advice would be great. Awesome video!!
Great educational video! I have been watching I think from the beginning!! Love your videos. We are coming in late March for the first time to Marathon. Was wondering for you could tell me what’s best to target that time of year. We will have dive gear and fishing gear. Thanks so much!
Heiko, Wish I had watched this video 20 years ago when we lived in Sunrise. We had a small 19 ft sea pro duel console we took up and the ICW and out of the Fort Lauderdale inlet. Didn't know what I was doing when it came to fishing but I was in the boat out on the water so I always had fun. Thanks for the video, if we ever get back there I have a little knowledge to help me.

Great video! Simplified but so much more in depth than what I have heard in the past. Love the patch reefs info. Thank you!
Can we get a wahoo/mahi trolling in the keys video next. Great video 🙌🏿🙌🏿
Love the info that most don’t like to share. Please post more
That’s exactly what I was looking for, coming out with my kids from Michigan in a month and wanted to do some fishing, thanks subscribed

I believe in you! Practice makes perfect =)
I am heading there tomorrow morning and will be setting out Tuesday morning early to spend the day fishing the reefs for a few days.

THANK YOU SOOO MUCH, great information!!!
Great video Heiko, congrats on the new channel
Thanks Peter!
Flounder is my favorite
What a great video! I’ll be down in marathon this may can’t wait to fish! 🍻
Love the new channel and as always the info 👍🏼
Great video. Looking forward to using this knowledge soon.thanks
Wow Heiko!!! I just learned so much from this video...This 2nd channel is gonna be so 🔥🔥💯, what a brilliant addition! I am so pumped for you Bro. Stay Up Mane 🎣💜
Great info, I'll have to check your store out. What is the minimum leader size you would reccomend for freeline rig?
What is another name for a patch reef? Very well done video, thank you for sharing. Now let's tell the wind to go away!
we went there, eagle reef had a lot of fish on it. I found a lot of the patch reefs were protected; i must have been doing something wrong.
Man I really enjoyed your insight...it'll be great to learn about the moon phase days and more weather patterns down there. What google product are you using to view patch reefs thanx
Thanks for this style of video. I'm headed down in mid June and was thinking about renting a boat and wetting a line. This was perfect.
Any tips on renting boats and buying gear down there? Bait tackel what a guy might bring or buy? Rods are tough to bring. thanks
good info Heiko
Where is a good spot to fish down in Cudjoe in October!
Question, do you have to be at least 3 miles from the coast for fishing?
I just moved to Key Largo and a neighbor said that to me, to be sure to be outside the 3 miles line
You need to be 3 miles from land just for spearfishing. You can fish almost anywhere, except some of the yellow sanctuary buoys on the patch reefs
If your still waiting on your boat and wanna run out. I got a 17’ bay boat we can run out on. I run down to the keys all the time. Let me know if your bored.
What’s the typical depth around Key Largo.
@Heiko. Love both channels! When can we net bait in key largo? Coming up next week but is it too early? If so, what's your fav bait shop in key largo
Good job.
Have you done much fishing on the Gulf side? We are headed down there this week. Not sure if there are patch reefs on Gulf side?
How do you get the coordinates on the patches?
What app are you using to look for the patch reefs. Google earth doesn’t seem to be to clear in marathon
Have you ever guided on someone elses boat ? Appreciate your time!
Hey Heiko, how do you get the GPS coordinates from Google satellite to use on the GPS on the boat?
Use Google earth and drop a marker... I then screen shot it and add it to GPS later.
@@Jayclark79 yes but the google earth coordinates are not in the same format as my GPS
You can change the coordinate format in Google Earth. See if there is one that matches your system.

is there any reefs you can swim to from the beach
Can you fish the main reef edge the same way? Are the same types of fish there?
Heiko,
I'm looking at google maps (just as you did) and I see the patch reefs off key largo (just as you showed). But in looking off islamorada upper and lower matecumbe on google maps, I'm not really seeing any patch reefs compared to key largo (except cheeks rocks and hens and chickens which are mostly for snorkeling). I counted You said patch reef 142 times in this video
Just purchase a house Mustang Island Texas I am going to do surf fishing all day

This guy just ramblers on about stuff only he would know" Patch reef's???
WAY WAY too much screen & mouse movements for almost TEN minutes. Gave me vertigo and reminded me of a toiling Powerpoint presentation from the 1990s. Yet highly informative if you can weather the storm.
I liked it
Awesome Stuff! Where is the link to all your videos? Thanks !
All my fishing videos are on this channel =)
Great video. It’s weird though…My google maps app on my phone isn’t as detailed as the google maps on the computer. That sucks.
Nice Heiko! Great tips, I just moved to an apartment just down the street from the key largo fisheries restraunt on the canal. I feel ya! These winds need to lay down
I just bought a house in that same canal :)
You give great information this is what you always should do I like your channel I want to fish with you one day I'm going to move down to Stuart Florida I hope to see you there
Awesome info, been looking for exactly this. Headed down to Marathon for a month in April
Do you charter? I'm looking for someone with your experience to go out for half a day.
Thank you for sharing. I've learned something today, and gaining knowledge is always a good thing.
Glad to be the 75th subscriber. Can’t wait for this channel to blow up.
How can you identify a patch reef with Garmin fish finder when you are out on the water?
Very informative. Taking my sons very soon!
Thanks. Wish I knew all this when I’d come down once a year in the 80s &90s
Something wrong with the fish. All over the news
Excellent video
Thab
Nks a bunch bro
How far do you throw the bottom rig out
Nice info 👍🤘
Do you chatter
Excellent video
This is a great video for visitors like myself. Can we spearfish the patch reefs with Hawaiian slings? If not where can we spearfish? Heading to Marathon in a few days. Thank you!
What app are you using to see the patch reefs. We are fishing out of long key.
Looks like google maps
Super informative video! Appreciate the insight. A buddy and I will be down your way this Fri-Sun if you ever meet up with subscribers? Would be cool to link up with some like minded, local fishing enthusiasts while there. We’ll be bringing our own boat. LMK if interested!
Great video! Thanks for the information on fishing and identification of the patch reefs!
Great video! Any tips for fishing Tavernier in mid summer? I'm under the impression that the fish move to deeper water. How deep? Should I focus more on the bay side to do some flats fishing? Will be there on vacation in mid June. Any advice would be great. Awesome video!!

Just the video I was looking for thank you. Coming down from Savannah, have zero experience in this fishery.
Can you share some specs on the rod/reel/ line that you prefer on the patch reefs? I’m thinking 4000 reel, 20lb braid?
Hey this is great info.. trying to learn about the keys. Coming down in November can’t wait to try an fish using what I learn from your channel
