Man, this takes me back. I was just a kid growing up in AZ but our house was where all my dad's work buddies would come over and watch the NBA. My dad was Celtics. My bro was Knicks. I was Bucks, and most of dad's buddies were Lakers fans. Those teams, along with the Bullets and Warriors, were it. If there was a live game...it wasnt even remotely like today.....it WAS an Event. Especially when your team was playing. It got crazy in that living room. Grown men on their knees during FTs or last shots, screaming at no calls, talking smack the whole way. I learned a lot of words waaaaaaaaaay before I should have. lol Good times, man.
This was must watch television in 72. Wilt vs Kareem, Oscar vs Jerry, Defending World Champions vs a team on a 33 game winning streak. Seems to me,it was in Prime Time.
I watched this game live. I was a Laker fan beginning in 1968. So I was thrilled by the 33-game streak. But something told me this game would be tough.
Man for man today's NBA is better. But Allstar for Allstar, 1972 was the better team. Imagine Wilt, Kareem, Hondo, Jerry and Clyde Frazier vs Today's NBA Allstars? 1972 Allstar team would smoke any team you can put together today.
You can see Oscar really only had a right hand dribble....West was a little better and did have a left hand.....Wilt is not as Bad Ass as I would have thought, but could still play today, but not with crazy numbers....Kareem will always be Kareem...
@@kevingamble8861 Wilt did block several of Kareem’s sky hooks in a different game, something I saw just last week in a UA-cam video which summarized all their head to head matchups. But as you said, Wilt was at the end of his career, and also had a knee injury that really hampered him. It was pretty interesting to watch though, Wilt was swatting and bothering much of what Kareem tried to put up (I think it was in the very first matchup).
3:14 Back in those days, zone defenses were illegal - only 'One on One' was allowed. If you complain that Lebron got away with stuff, Wilt just got away with zone defense.
It's not so amazing if you know the particulars.... Kareem desperately wanted out of Milwaukee due to the cultural polarity of his Muslim faith and Milwaukee's societal environment. They lost to this Lakers team the following June, and at the beginning of that following season, he made his request known to the Bucks' front office. The trade was made, and the Bucks received 4 very good players for Kareem and a journeyman scrub in June of '75. Two years later he won his 5th league MVP, and two years after that the Lakers drafted Magic......and the rest, as they say, is Laker history.
I’m a rare voice saying this, but Keith Jackson is maybe the most overrated of all… If you actually listen to his college football games, it’s a lot of bark and not much bite. “ALLLLmost intercepted” and countless other catchphrases, but not even close to the quality of Al Michaels and other greats. Dick Vitale is also on my list, what a buffoon

The flow and pace of the game is so smooth, players raising their hand and not protesting every foul. If we can only get that in today's game.

In all fairness to Wilt, he was 10 years past his prime when this game was played. If he was 25 he would have blocked a few of Kareem's sky hooks.
