- +++ Very sad news:Magnus Reslow has died. Colombian coast guard found his boat shipwrecked and his body in the water. What exactly happened after he left Santa Marta on the 15th of February is still known. We are very sad about the tragic loss. Magnus was in a good mood when he left Santa Marta and so thankful for all the help he got. His plan was to sail to Panama and then continue to the Pacific. His biggest dream was to sail to French Polynesia. R.I.P. Magnus!"
Magnus Reslow is a Swedish single handed sailor who was attacked by pirates at the Columbian coast. On 29th of December his boat was invaded three times by pirates, close to the city of Barranquilla. Reslow was beaten up several times and attacked by knife. The attackers stole nearly everything from his low budget boat. In this interview Reslow talks about the attack and how he could manage to escape after the pirates towed up his boat, trying to pull him to the coast.

@@WojciechowskaAnna I agree and I wouldn’t be surprised. I do reserve judgment because I have no idea about this man’s life. I’ve known of a few men who have just walked out on wife and children over the years and it is devastating. Estrangement is never simple and both sides have a story to tell. It is always sad.

I am very sad to hear that Magnus Reslow is dead. I met him in 2018 in one of the the harbours of Malmö, Sweden.A very nice guy. Most gentle and sweet to everyone. He was living his dream. Independece and freedom on a boat. Rest in peace Magnus. I be thinking of you when sailing. Take care bud. ❤
What a harrowing and traumatic experience ! His friend that contacted the Swedish Coast Guard is a hero ! The Swedish and Columbian Coast Guards really came through by acting quickly .
This is so sad. I watch a lot of sailing couples, this makes me nervous for them! It can happen to anyone. I’m so happy for others helping him out and the kind and generosity of the sailing community ❤️❤️
So sorry that you were attacked. Wow. Very scary. My wife and I sailed these waters. We left Aruba and sailed direct to Cartagena. We stayed way off shore 30-100 miles. We were about 30mi out in this area. We were alone. This was a the height of Colombian violence. And the ONLY safe port was Cartagena. And that was if you didn’t stop anywhere until at the marina or designated anchorage right in from of it. We rarely took marinas but did on this occasion. Cartagena was a very positive experience. We then sailed alone to San Blas. We immediately made a course out of Cartagena streight out to sea about 15 miles before making for the San Blas. PS. You will love the San Blas. When we were there, there were NO facilities of ANY kind. Still wonderful. No charts of this area either back around 1999. Just has some crude sketch charts. But loved the San Blas. Respected and got along well with the Cuna/Guna Indians. One stayed on board with us for about a month. A very symbiotic relationship. Please post any info on go fund me for this man. Magnus, what a horrendous condition. We are thankful your friend called the Swedish Coast Guard and the local Military arrived to assist. Such a hurtful thing like this should never happen, we are thankful for your interview to allow us what conditions maybe confronted while sailing Solo. Take extra precautions before you depart and try to secure a gun and ammunition for the local military. God Bless!

What an increadibly strong and resourceful man! To withstand three attacks over that length of time, always being unsure if he would survive it and yet fighting back, fending them off despite being out numbered, and holding up physically and emotionally is amazing. His grit to get through a total loss during the shipwreck, 7 years of caretaking a parent with demntia, and just foguring out how to live as he does on so little is impressive. Increadible fortitude!
I am a single retired sailor in Central America too, and have often been apprached by a panga offshore. It can be scary but normally, it is to simply ask: 'Do you want to buy some fish?' or 'Are you OK?. Not sure what i would have done, had i been in Magnus's shoes but he is one tough dude.
Sailors should be able to carry weapons for protection.

American Here, love Aus, I’ve done your whole country but NT. I did tea tree bay Noosa down to Ulladulla surfing and all between, took bus from Sydney to Perth and then lansling and Eddie’s down to yallingup and drove south coast esperence and Cary’s and Melbourne Adelaide back to Sydney! I did Rottnest island and stayed in military tents and pet quakkas. Haha. Love pie shops and your candid nature. A family fixed our 1978honda civic we took out back seat for surfboards and broke down on Easter Sunday and everything’s closed but a family from church in all whites stopped and rolled up sleeves and got dirty and took apart carburetor and fixed the float that was stuck. We couldn’t buy him beer or anything as thanks! But thank you Aussies! We terrorized your highways not k owing how to drive on the other side! Bahahahaha! 🤣
I have been cruising Mexico and Central America these last few years and came to the conclusion that you really are on your own. In Mexico there is no coastguard, no marine police services and no volunteer services either. Local fisherman will help on occasions, but they rarely go further than a few miles from home. That only leaves the Navy, and the old rule is that they only come out if it is headlines in the national newspapers (when it is likely too late and involves something newsworthy like a foreign cruise ship). As odd as it sounds, Magnus can at least be grateful that the Columbian military took it seriously and came out for him.
Mexico is a failed state. Mind boggling that anyone would even want to visit such a toilet of a country.
The coast guard came because it was the Swedish authorities who contacted the Colombian authorities directly, by the way, thank you very much for telling us about your experiences.
Sailers should be allowed to have weapons on bord to defend themselfes.
Molotov cocktails and repeating cross bow. If you don't have a steel boat your kind of screwed even with firearms. I new a Brittish guy who picked holes in a metal gas can and threw it into the raft of armed pirates and fired a flare into the raft. This guy was ex military and had his wife onboard and was way off the coast beyond the range of boarding vessels meaning they were launching of a larger vessel. Is that self defense or murder who knows he judged the situation. All naval combat requires the boat to have some sort of armor and for who ever you are to strike first second and last which means the possibility of killing people that could be bringing a 6 pack of Coke or Pepsi. Getting in an exchange of fire or handling molotov cocktails on anything not made of steel is a bad idea. There is no answer to your question there are two real choices fight or surrender. If your going to attack try and look nice and welcoming and if you surrender look tough and mean.
It gets so complicated carrying weapons onboard. All my weapons are stored at a friend's house back in the US. I'm currently in Mexico and although you are allowed to check in a pistol up to .38 cal or a shotgun the procedures from state to state are different. Just being in Mexican waters with a weapon is a crime so there have been people thrown in jail before they have a chance to check the weapon. In Mexico they count your ammunition and recount it when you depart. Other countries are much more complicated and you will basically just forfeit your gun as getting it back is a chore. Some countries don't even allow flare pistols.
If I was concerned about any area I would obtain a cheap shotgun and throw it overboard before entering a country. Mainly you just avoid areas with this sort of opportunistic piracy.

Colombian and Venezuelan coasts are famous for piracy activity in Latin America. Many boats turn off their transponders, stay as far away from the coast as possible and travel in groups to help avoid the risks in piracy prone waters. My best wishes to this sailor.

Realistically, the only two things Magnus might have done differently is: 1. Sailing further offshore; 2. Sail with a buddy boat. I wonder if he thinks either would have made any difference?
@aquaticape2273 Not a practical option as most countries confiscate any arms on arrival and will only return them on departure. Remember that in the authorities eyes, you are a tourist with none of the rights a citizen might have.

I'm sad to report that Magnus Reslow was found deceased after being shipwrecked in Colombian waters. But he lived his life to his fullest, always on the edge. Rest in peace ❤
Oh my God, do they know how he died? It could even have been from a head injury from this beating he got. I don't know him and this video just came over my feed and I was crying through his interview, and then I came to read the comments, only to discover this. I as shaking my head at the interview, because MY GOD, HOW MANY TIMES CAN YOU SAY OK?. SMH The man deserved a better INTERVIEW THAN THIS ONE.
It's not clear how he died. The boat was found sunken close to a beach, and his body washed up a few hundred meters away, as far as I've read.

Solo sailing is really amazing but can be difficult at times......I am a solo sailor and have had unwanted visitors before....it is not a good situation at all....firearms are not an option legally so I travel with my dogs now for two years, two Saarloos wolf dogs..... they are awesome companions to have with me and have detered intruders on two other occasions now..... Its amazing how the sight of two 'wolfs' tends to change the mind of people who want to come onboard uninvited. I have found that showing would be intruders that it will not be an easy task to board and steal definitely helps to keep them off....once they are onboard it is harder and much more risk of injury....but since two years with my wolf crew onboard noone has actually boarded uninvited. I hope things are better for you going forward Magnus. Kind regards

My respects to this man is off the charts (pun intended), what a life story he has, this is living, bless him! I sail a few times each year out of Cartagena to the Rosario islands and San Bernardo islands off the Colombian coast, all with my Italian Captain friends who has a boat in Cartagena. So glad this guy survived. And he does this all on his pension of $230./month. Very coincidentally I have had these piracy talks with my Captain as we were sailing in the Caribbean coast just about this same area he was attacked, it's a real concern. I live 10 years in Medellin, Colombia but am on the Colombian/Caribbean coast, including Santa Marta, many times each year.

For those who recommend guns, I believe you have not sailed internationally to any great extent. When clearing Customs and Immigration, the third question asked after names of passengers and name of vessel is “Do you have any weapons?”. If the answer is “yes”, most countries will confiscate the weapon until you leave the country. This includes French Polynesian, where you exit the country 2000 nm downwind from where your weapon was confiscated. If you lie about the weapon, and are caught, leave a comment about your experience in an island jail. On a 9 yr. Circumnavigation, our boat was searched 4 times by authorities, twice with canines. I know of two instances where sailors were thrown in jail for bringing weapons into a country even though they admitted to possession upon entering the country.
is it OK to bring a fishing spear gun or bow & arrow or a long kitchen knife that can be used as a short sword without it being confiscated?
@@HikerBikerMoter We did encounter a country that did not allow spear guns(but frankly I can’t not remember which one) in the Pacific. We carried Bear Pepper Spray until it was confiscated in Australia. Machetes are common in many countries. However, we have a friend who was boarded in Tobago by three armed robbers at anchor. They used Ian’s own machete found in the cockpit to slap him along side the head a couple of times with the blunt side to encourage him to hand over all the money on board. The robbers got all $40 of the cash. They were not interested in any electronics. When a friend paddled over to Ian’s boat to investigate the commotion, the pirates fired in her general direction as a warning to stay away.

I'm a friend of Magnus, six days before this we were boarded by 4 armed men (at anchor in taganga Santa Marta). I was pistol whipped and ALL items of value were stolen from our boat. Colombia is LAWLESS. I strongly encourage sailors DO NOT GO TO COLOMBIA
Magnus is such a resilient man after escaping multiple attacks he's very lucky to be alive. I, have much Respect for this man! I'm planning a visit in Taganga later on this year so Santa Marta port is like next door so maybe i'll have the opportunity to sit down with Magnus. Till then,... Very impressive video. I think the best is to go out more miles we did so (i think 15 miles or even 20 but not because of the pirates but there is a big river that very often carries a lot of wood, also big tranches of trees.

An old captain showed me how to pour lighter fluid on a sock put the light fluid jug in the sock and toss into a fiftyfive gallon drum after i could get it in the drum a few times and got the feel of things he lit the sock and spun onto the ground and every was immediately engulfed in blue and orange flame....he said two words at the end ... pirate food.

I had some inteesting replays on my comment, so to clarify: yes, in a lot of countries you ave to surrender yor weapons on clearing in, in others you can keep it , if you have a weapons vault, which they can put a seal on. If you break it , you have to report. In other countries ( and mainly the dangerous ones), no problems at all. In columbia they even loved it and adviced me to use it if any problems. Gave me their vhf and phone contact if i need them to join the actions. And sorry to spoil the dreams of some wannebe around the world sailors, to be prepared and trained for almost everything is important, besides the sailing and navigation it includes medical training and equipment ( i had even morphine on board, neven a problem) , technical, legal, cultural, lingual ect knowledge. And of course a well maintained boat. Those string budget dreamers can be lucky and make it, but more often they get stucked in the canaries or caribean and continue dreaming or fail totally. I did do 50 years of sailing and single around ,racing etc, so i know what im talking about.
If you want to prepare for everything, why not stay at home were it is the safest?

@@davecopp9356I don’t know if you have sailed offshore or not. If you have did you have a lifeboat aboard? Did you believe you were going to sink? Not just sailors but any smart human being prepares for the worst and hopes for the best. Do you find it odd that you are forced to carry life jackets, fire extinguishers, flares and other things for your safety? Now for someone who’s never needed any of these things but who’s interacted with pirates on multiple occasions. What tool used for their safety are they forbidden to possess? What tool is used to protect the people who make all of these rules? What tool is used by the people who enforce those rules? Well it seems to reason. If all the important people are using these tools to protect themselves. And they will rip the money right out of my pocket in fines if I don’t have all of the devices for my own safety. Then I should be able to make the wise choice of carrying the same personal safety device as the important people do.
Having a gun onboard was just so much trouble that we abandoned it early on. Now, after 7 years we are within 700 miles of closing the loop on our world tour. Being close to Venezuelan and Columbian coasts, we wished we still had arms. Having said that, it’s the first time in all those miles.
I prefer to be armed and not need them, than need them and not have them...

The Columbian government have, in recent years, been seeking to encourage foreign tourism. As beautiful as Columbia is, these sort of incidents will not help. It may explain, however, why the military took the incident seriously and responded as they did.

Security must always be considered. Have a plan at least. You are never completely safe.
He said he was able to make a cell phone call, so i guess he was reasonably close (within 3 miles) of the coast? Is the lesson to stay further offshore?

A true Swedish viking - with power.
In 2013, sailing from St. Lucia to the San Blas, four men in a panga attempted to board our 44 ft sailboat on Christmas Eve at 4:30 pm, 120 miles offshore of mid coast Venezuela. After discussing with other sailors, including a retired Navy Admiral, the consensus was these four had most likely were drug smugglers from St. Lucia who missed a rendezvous with the mother ship due to a malfunctioning gps(wet or dead batteries). The men stated they had been at sea for four days and wanted a tow back to St Lucia, a compass, batteries, food, water etc. They attempted three times to come along side our vessel and board in 2 meter seas, causing $2,000 in damages. After yelling at them, they ceased boarding attempts. After discussions, we supplied them with bottles of water and packaged food by tossing to them as they followed behind us. We could not or would not accommodate the other demands. While sorting out the food, they stopped following us and we continued on . I phoned the US Coast Guard via satellite phone immediately after the encounter and relayed the story, so that if our EPIRB went off, it was related to this panga encounter.
120 miles offshore is a long way out for a panga! Did they even have enough fuel to get back to shore?
They were also about 150 miles west of St. Lucia. We do not carry gas, and thus could not give any to them. Inviting them aboard with my wife and our 23 yo female crew(recently on the British National Sail Team) was out of the question given their aggressiveness initially. “Sun rises in the east” was our parting advice. We attempted to follow up with St. Lucia newspapers to see if news of this vessels return appeared, but no news was found.
@markbigalke4669 Hard to know what I would have done. Sometimes, we face some difficult decisions with these encounters. That's a long way offshore, though, so certainly not regular local fishermen. Your admiral friend's viewpoint may well be correct.
you should have prepared a tow to saint lucia while putting someone on the vhf to ask for assistance from possible boats around; if you refuse, or for some valid reasons cannot tow them, the minimum would be to use vhf/sat phone to find a boat that is willing to do it & wait for it with them.
i can understand you feel in danger, venezuelian pirates & such, but from what you describe they were the one in danger and there is a sacred rule on the sea...
imagine yourself in the opposite situation ? what would make you more worth saving than them ? just because you're rich ?

torch gun and flares allways good to have at hand. molotovs can get messy i think. but i totally understand it. a pressurised "sprinkler" thing for garden stuff with gasoline in and an reliable ignition is scary shit too.... anyway im sure you thought a whole bunch of ways. respect to the sailing community. very often people that that both can and want to help. i hope you dnt get too traumatised, but keep sailing, it will take some time maybe, but you will get back in a relaxed mode again. parts of the coasts of South America , Central America are getting dangerous it seems , Philippines , Somalia , etc. sailors beware ! Have a plan and be prepared ! Best Wishes to this Strong Sailor ! I absolutely agree that people should have a choice in when and how to defend themselves. Too often it’s not possessions you’re defending but the lives of you and your loved ones.

This is a great example of why I'm fabricating a water canon/ lifeline system using schedule 80 stainless pipe for my boat and other recreational sailboats.

If you sail around the world, you have to be prepared for everything, even piracy. Happened twice to me with automatic gun attacks (marocco and pacific coast columbia). I had 22 cal pistol, which i could hide in my hand, 9mm automatic, pumpgun and fragmental and stun granades, defended successfully. Silly to go out without, and its legal in most countries, as long as you know the clear in procedures.

Firearms are not legal to carry onboard for most countries you enter as a cruiser, and would require that they are surrendered whilst in that country, and handed back to you on your departure, so really are not going to be of much help legally in foreign waters, other security measures are far more effective and far less problematic, such as traveling with other boats when possible in suspect areas, staying further offshore if possible, or as in my own case have large dogs onboard.
And yes being prepared is key, I have had the unfortunate experience of intruders 3 times now but only once did they manage to get fully onboard and that event was one I'd not wish to repeat, hence my dogs. They have deterred intruders on both other occasions along with my obvious intentions to defend my boat.... Showing that any attempt to board will be met with resistance has I believe been good thing. Obviously if they come with guns and are determined to board the life of my dogs and my own is worth more than possessions. I am fortunate that the boat is aluminium and has an aluminium companion way hatch that can be dogged shut from the inside

But an effective defense on a boat requires a long reach, if you think you are gonna go all Rambo with a little hand gun then you're already boarded and in the thick of it and there are far better tools for that situation.
PLUS you have gotta have access to your highly illegal firearms pretty quickly when they might be needed, which begs the question of where you have them stashed so as to avoid them being discovered by the relevant boarding teams of the host countries security services, yet easily accessable when you have to use them.....

and have onboard items that are generally legal in most countries you'll enter but can provide a deterrent at reach. Rules around firearms can be very strict with severe punishments if caught on the wrong side of those laws.....take the UK for example where even a Very pistol/ flare gun is covered by the firearms act and therefore effectively prohibited. Illegally firearms possession in the UK will get you 5 years to wonder if it was a good idea after all.

You can make a nice weapon which is no weapon when taken apart. You need a small aircompressor 12 volts, the portable 1 for tires a little pressure tank and a carpaintgun. Use your fantasy what you put in the paintgun reservoir😂😂😂😂 they leave your boat swimming and blind if u do things right.

If you have been in a situation where a large steel vessel with bows 20 feet above yours approaches at night right up to your transom I would like you to tell me what to do. With a search light in your face, you are blinded and can't see the crew. This happened to us in UK waters where a hand gun is an automatic jail trip. All the UA-cam warriors know what to do at home, but not out at sea. I'll tell you my thoughts. This vessel that was 10 times as powerful as ours, which weighed 20 times what ours did, would simply drive into us, sinking us in 5°C water in seconds after the first shot. 15 minutes later we would all be dead from hypothermia. Nothing you can do could make any difference. Shooting at a skipper through 20 tonnes of steel is not an option. Note if you don't like this comment, I will not be able to read your response.
@philgray1023 Actally, I am a full-time, solo cruiser with many years of experience around the less glamorous parts of Central America. And yes, I have been approached many times, far offshore, both at daytime and at night. Each time, they scared me rotten, but the encounter turned out benign ie "we can't afford a radio, would you mind sending a message for us" or "do you want to buy a fish?". Anyone, my earlier point (which you misconstrued) was that the laws on guns vary between countries but in many, they require you to hand them in upon arrival, to be returned on departure, which defeats the supposed purpose. I personally know of no cruisers that carries arms, because of these difficulties. My only defense, in my case, is two super bright spreader lights, which I immediately turn on in the event of any such encounter at night.
@@philgray1023I’m glad you mentioned the cold water and hypothermia. I bet you carry life jackets. You probably don’t ever plan on needing them and if miles away from rescue you’ll die from hypothermia. You carry them nonetheless, because they can save your life more times than not. There’s not one lawmaker anywhere in the world who isn’t protected with firearms. Yet they make laws that forbid the common people from having the same choice. Besides the fact that this is the pinnacle of hypocrisy, I ask you. Are the lives of yourself and your family any less valuable than theirs?

I am not sure this talk about sailing with buddy boats is the right thing to do. If I had the slowest boat I would definitely not do it. A flotilla is much easier to spot than a boat sailing by herself. When the brown substance hits the rotating device you will find yourself being the first target as the rest will set of at their maximum/hull speed and leave you behind and you will be the easy victim.
Better to stay well off shore. No transponder. Make the timing so that you pass the most dangerous part of your passage during a moonless night with no running lights and no light escaping from the cabin. Running the radar intermittently to check your surrounding will probably be ok to avoid collision.
I have tried some buddy boating. Sometimes it's a pain (because your buddy has different plans from you) and sometimes it's a huge plus (like when you break down and your buddy has exactly the tool you need). I would generally only consider it in dangerous areas, otherwise I am probably happier on my own.
in wilderness survival, first rule of surviving a bear attack is having a slower buddy with you.

I love the ocean, but this is exactly why I don't leave American water's! I could never put myself in a situation where only the government and bad guys are allowed to carry!
Many cruisers advise staying 200 miles off that coast for this very reason. He got robbed once, and stayed on. Bad plan. Go where you sre treated well, my friend.
This was not Venezuelan waters but Columbian waters. Up to now, we regarded Venezuelan waters as dangerous but Columbian waters as reasonably safe.
