      None though if I was going to get something for a tank that small I'd probably pick up a mourning gecko? They max out at about 10 cm long (ie: 4 inches) so a 10 gallon is plenty of space for one. You could even house a pair in that amount of space though the problem with that is, due to how mourning geckos reproduce via lesbian sex??? sorta, that would mean having to plan to find somewhere to house the unavoidable resulting babies lol.

    Would love a 20 gall and 30 gal version of this list! 10 seems a little too small for anything to me, I think it would bum me out even if it was something on this list. But $$ and space are tight for us, I’m always thinking about what would do well in a smallish enclosure. Just not the smallest enclosure.

    • @Kilo_kyle
      @Kilo_kyle Рік тому +8

    Along with the Peter’s banded skink, I believe that chameleon geckos are the most underrated lizards. They are so interesting, and can eat CGD! They also stay conveniently small.
    Also, I noticed an improvement in editing quality, it looks great! Keep up the great content!

  • @thechickenwizard8172
    @thechickenwizard8172 Рік тому +97

    There are a lot more options you didn't even mention, many of which make much better pets than the ones you listed.
    Micro geckos for one, such as sphaerodactylus sp., viper geckos, banded geckos and more are all pretty comfortable in a 10, even 5 gallon tank. A lot of species are out during the day and can be very fun to watch.
    Fire belly toads imo are better than glass frogs for a few reasons; they not only can live in a 10 gallon, but they're active and fun to watch, hardy, and more avaliable captive bred than glass frogs. I actually just got two myself, and I love them so much already!
    Also, salamanders and newts would also work in a 10 gallon tank depending on the species, and as long as you live in a cold climate, they're pretty easy to care for.
    Smaller lizards like desert night lizards and Schmidt's crocodile skinks would also do well in a small enclosure. Some anole species would also do well in a ten gallon.
    Another good option that's similar to mourning geckos, yet even smaller, is hemiphyllodactylus typus, which are share the parthenogenesis, diet, and overall care of their larger relatives, but are less flighty and can live in smaller spaces.
    Bigger is definitely better in some cases, but I think that idea dismisses all the other amazing tiny animals that can thrive in a 10 gallon or smaller.

    • @m0sspunk
      @m0sspunk Рік тому +10

      Mourning geckos aren’t great because you might get overrun in the small tank if you miss some eggs that hatch 😅

      When you say that typhus are less flighty Does that mean you can hold them? I am very curious since I have been looking for a small species of gecko for a 10 gallon or 5 gallon that you can hold

    • @thechickenwizard8172
      @thechickenwizard8172 Рік тому +1

      @@Mercedes_may from what I've researched, I wouldn't really recommend handling because they are still tiny and easily hurt/crushed, and could possibly escape if they're handled in a cluttered area. However, they seem to be slower and less darty than mourning geckos, so if you're extra careful and handle them somewhere secure such as over a large tub or container, you could socialize them pretty well.

    Love these kinds of videos on what you can own for differing sized enclosures. I seem to learn about animals I don't even think about or know about when watching your videos too. I've wanted a chameleon for so long, but didn't want a huge enclosure since humidity systems and such aren't something I'm well versed in. A small enclosure would be great through because smaller enclosures tend to be easier to learn to work with those kinds of systems.

    I'm pretty sure, when you were a much younger dude(with a full moon of hair), we worked in a soul draining call centre together. You were kind of dabbling in potentially tattooing at the time. I was a TL/coach at the time.
    Seeing you pop up here, with a thriving YT channel and community? Is pretty awesome. Seems like you're getting to do something you're super passionate about, and that's a pretty rare thing.
    It's pretty amazing. Keep killing it! You make really excellent content, and have great presence.
    Proud is a weird word to use for people who make brief appearances in your life, but I'm always excited to see people pop up years on, doing awesome things they love.

    I'm glad you put the caveat that a 10 is really only suitable for thumbnail darts (and that's still borderline: a lot of dart enthusiasts will emphatically insist on at least a 20g even for the tiny ranitomeya species due to their active behavior).
    I have a small group of juvenile (4 moz out of water) Dendrobates tinctorus growing out in a vertical 10g that was set up with multiple tiers of climbable platforms to maximize space, but they can get pretty big for darts and will be moving into a pair of 40g vivariums (because you shouldn't keep more than a pair, maybe a 2m:1f trio, in the same enclosure) in a couple more months. Most of the really popular pet dart frogs are way too big for a 10g, and tinctorus darts, which are probably the most common of all, are best kept in a 29g or larger due to their adult size.

      While this is a very good thing to bring up, many people that are looking for pets that can fit in a small enclosure are not capable or willing to care for an animal that requires so much more specialized and time consuming care than it otherwise would. Really, special needs animals shouldn’t be going to anyone else other than the most dedicated, educated, and/or experienced keepers, certainly not the majority of people looking for an animal that can live comfortably in a 10 gal tank.

    I'm wondering this because there are so few captive bred rubber boas and it was one of the first snakes I kept.
    I believe the person I bought it from caught it in the wild, but I'm note entirely sure. And they're super mellow.

    • @ettinakitten5047
      @ettinakitten5047 Рік тому +3

      All captive bred animals are eventually descended from wild caught. And breeding a wild caught animal means that you are enabling people to get that species captive bred, or if it's already readily-available, ensuring more genetic diversity. If you already have the animal in captivity anyway, I think breeding them is a great idea.

    I just thought of an idea for your next video: Top 5 Prepared Diets for Beardies. I'm currently using Repashy Beardie Buffet for mine. The little lady will ready eat it if tongs and I just recently saw her eating it out of her food bowl. I also do give her veggies and insects, but having a prepared diet is very convenient, especially when you run out of feeder insects

    I think there are better options for snakes in 10 gallons. I have a southern ringneck snake in a 5 gallon and it's still bigger than what I usually consider a minimum for snakes. He is 12 inches long and thinner than a pencil, so he has plenty of room to stretch out and cruise around his enclosure, which he does a lot of. As an adult he's smaller than a lot of baby snakes. He's small enough that he uses an oak leaf as a hide. And he eats nightcrawler pieces. So he's pretty easy to take care of and he's fun to watch.

    Don’t quote me because I’ve never owned one before, but I have heard that pacman frogs also can live in 10 gallon enclosures because they honestly don’t move that much.

    Hey! I love your channel and how much work you put in. Some of my favorite animals are Mourning geckos and I was wondering if you could do a video either about them or featuring them. I think they are neat and I think you could do these awesome animals justice with a cool video!

    I would say that chameleon geckos are pretty much 100% the same care as crested geckos with the only difference being that they do better with uvb. I’ve kept both in the same room with exact same setups but scaled down size wise a little

    Not that they are typically kept as pets but most amphisbaenians can do fine in 10 gallons

    It drives me nuts that there are still books - fairly recent and written by people who should know better- and store care guides that say you can keep leopard geckos in 10s. It’s insane. 😢
