  • Vocal Coach Reacts To In This Moment | Maria Brink | Forever | Live | Ken Tamplin
Maria Brink was once named “Rock Goddess of the Year” and has built a name for herself around her epic belting and screams.
Best known as the frontwoman of the metalcore band In This Moment, Maria started off in a band called Pulse before moving to California looking for a better musical opportunity.
After 2 years in Los Angeles she met Chris Howorth whom she would later form In This Moment with and who she continues to currently play with.
Maria has gone on to be named Hottest Chick in Metal" in 2010, and was also recognized by Revolver Magazine as one of the "25 Hottest Chicks in Hard Rock & Metal".
For today’s reaction I’ll be looking at Maria in a different setting as she takes on the song “Forever” in an acoustic performance.
We’ll also talk about dysphonia and look at what can cause it. I hope you all enjoy the video and please be sure to share your feedback!

You need to listen to Maria sing full voice, she is holding back in this video which changes her vocals because it is acoustical. Love you Maria!

Mark Gordon I think defending or offending isn’t the point. She is off key a lot through this. He’s pointing out the importance of healthy screaming or vocal frying! I think it’s still great I love her but I totally agree with what he’s saying :)

To some extent, yes. But truthfully, having listened to Maria for years, I’ve grown increasingly worried about the effects the screaming has had on her voice. Listen to her earlier stuff and compare it to the newer stuff. You can hear the toll it’s taken on her voice.

I adore Maria. I didn't like this song as much as the acoustic "Lost At Sea". I really see your points in this song. She even seems like she's straining in this song which is wild because I don't hear the strain in her metal voice. In any case I do find Maria to be a wonderful artist.

I'm an In This Moment fan and I love Maria with my heart, but I don't think she takes care of her voice properly, she said once in a interview that she didn't/don't take vocal lessons at all, so I'm kinda worry for her health 🥺 I guess she's just lucky for not having any serious problem this whole time

I want to take lessons. I mean I've been in chorus in middle and high school and I've gotten better, but idk. I don't feel like I'm good enough to do what I want to do. I've finally gotten where I can sing higher (I used to not let myself sing higher and I'd get strained), but I'm still not great. I guess I want to be able to have someone who can help me one on one and help me be more confident.

In This Moment's theatrics in concert are awesome! The illusion's are crazy! I wasn't a fan of The Purge, but when I heard it live, the volume of Maria's shrieks at the end of the little rap bars keep her at "The queen of scream".

Hi Ken! Maria Brink needs your singing course as soon as possible. This is a code red situation. Someone needs to get her to your vocal academy this minute. With that said, I would be lying if I didn't admit that I did enjoy her whole carefree, free wheeling, braless attitude that made her performance a feast for the eyes if not necessarily the ears. Thanks for all the outstanding videos.

Ken, it was SO funny when you shut your eyes to listen 😂😂 I've got to be truthful...when she was singing it made me tense up and I thought of the same word as you..."painful". Have you ever had a sound run through you like an electric current? That's about the best way I can describe this performance. I have heard her singing on other videos and she sounded great, though. Admire what you do, Ken. I've been complimentary of the work you've done with your students. For me, however, I would say that the whole stripped down, "booze and cigarettes" thing works for In This Moment. It's not for everyone, but for their songs it works.

I understand a lot of what you are saying.. because Amy Lee and Sharon Adel sing perfectly based on on your criteria.. but Maria brings the imperfect as the perfection.. Jeff Keith made a whole singing career singing just like this (band Tesla).. and Tesla was one of the best hard rock bands of the 1990s.. her voice does break and croak like you said.. but in ways that adds to the performance..

Haven’t had the opportunity to catch them live but yeah i see what some of you mean by their ‘unplugged’ sets. Maria’s vocals and screams can cut thru your soul like a blade and hold her ground very well among the blistering guitars.

Hey Ken - I'm curious how much of the rough parts were stylistic rather than her "losing it". I've seen her live performances several times where she seems to do this on demand...even when addressing the audience...perhaps to add a sexiness quality to the sound? It kind of reminds me of Yebba - My Mind, where a lot of people think she's having difficult time technically with the song but she's shown she is in complete control of her voice and it was simply to add emotion. Which reminds me, I have not seen you do a reaction to that song yet and you 100000% need to. She sang it live a week after her mom committed suicide and it's probably the best live performance I've ever seen. Rock on!

Several years ago, I used to do Kurt Cobain screams. I would wait until my vocals were relaxed, which was always a few drinks in, when my vocal chords were good and dry.
This has hurt my range, and has virtually killed my falsetto, causing an unpleasing distortion (vocal nodes?)
For the past few years I have been working on singing healthier, and using less forced distortion in my voice. Is there any way to gain back vocal range and fix my falsetto? I feel it has gotten somewhat better, but progress is super slow.

Hey Ken, I highly recommend you do a vocal reaction to any of Hironobu Kageyama's live performances of the Dragon Ball Z theme song "CHA LA HEAD" I know, it's super nerdy and most people in America don'tknow who Hironobu is outside of anime fams, but I am an anime nerd lol. And regardless of if you speak japanese, (I don't currently) Hironobu is such a great live performer and singer. Though it would take listening to the TV cut of the opening theme first to judge if he hit the notes right on stage. The clearest highest quality cut of that is the opening for the Dragon Ball Z Kakarot video game.

    Hello again Ken;
Here is a link to an amazing performance of “You’re No Good” Its like experiencing the song for the first time. Kind of reminds me of Vanilla Fudge doing “You Keep Me Hangin On” Seems to be a little editing but none-the-less a great performance from a Legend. My Heart breaks for her and her current health struggles.
Enjoy the performance ( If you haven’t seen it already)

@@kentamplin I also just saw a live video of her doing Say Hello 2 Heaven at a Chris Cornell tribute. I can't stand that style of music, but she does grunge rock well. She is versatile and has more of a voice than Katy, Taylor, Halsey, Ariana, etc.etc. I've watched a few of her live videos and she always nails it, no matter what genre.

It’s hard for metal singers to tone it down for acoustic performances, so kudos to her for even trying. It’s really not her style, but she did the best she could👍 I mean, what if Jack Johnson attempted to perform his songs in the screamo style she dominates? It would be equally difficult on his voice as this was on hers.

Funny thing is. People, the listeners usually like to hear this type of sound, dysphonic. Not a clean one. Proof to this is the amount of schooled singers with a clean sound who got their studies on point, day in and day out practicing. Then there are the people who lose their clean voice indefinitely and are left with a natural or unnatural raspy voice like Lemmy for example. Maria is amazing, but I bet that rasp tickles her vocal chords when she sings. I always wondered what Beth Hart feels in her throat when she sings or Steven Tyler if we are at that!
