- Vocal Coach Reacts To In This Moment | Maria Brink | Forever | Live | Ken Tamplin
Maria Brink was once named “Rock Goddess of the Year” and has built a name for herself around her epic belting and screams.
Best known as the frontwoman of the metalcore band In This Moment, Maria started off in a band called Pulse before moving to California looking for a better musical opportunity.
After 2 years in Los Angeles she met Chris Howorth whom she would later form In This Moment with and who she continues to currently play with.
Maria has gone on to be named Hottest Chick in Metal" in 2010, and was also recognized by Revolver Magazine as one of the "25 Hottest Chicks in Hard Rock & Metal".
For today’s reaction I’ll be looking at Maria in a different setting as she takes on the song “Forever” in an acoustic performance.
We’ll also talk about dysphonia and look at what can cause it. I hope you all enjoy the video and please be sure to share your feedback!

You need to listen to Maria sing full voice, she is holding back in this video which changes her vocals because it is acoustical. Love you Maria!
❤🇨🇦🍁
Mark Gordon 👍
Mark Gordon I think defending or offending isn’t the point. She is off key a lot through this. He’s pointing out the importance of healthy screaming or vocal frying! I think it’s still great I love her but I totally agree with what he’s saying :)
To some extent, yes. But truthfully, having listened to Maria for years, I’ve grown increasingly worried about the effects the screaming has had on her voice. Listen to her earlier stuff and compare it to the newer stuff. You can hear the toll it’s taken on her voice.
I'm just happy she's an artist, something about hearing anyone sing without coaching makes me feel like I'm hearing something truly unique.
I would listen to Ken explaining how to open up a can of soup🤘
Thanks, David!
😂😂😂😂😂
Lol 😁
Depends on the flavour, I like tomato. 😋
I adore Maria. I didn't like this song as much as the acoustic "Lost At Sea". I really see your points in this song. She even seems like she's straining in this song which is wild because I don't hear the strain in her metal voice. In any case I do find Maria to be a wonderful artist.
👍👍👍
I agree! And her Lost At Sea on this was much better. And I love her metal voice as well. Their newest song is really good!
I got a little change in my voice that I feel from your daily exercise, thank you always keep the informative video for us .. God bless you, if you want to be a singer then sing and do exercises that I feel indeed.
Awesome! Rock on!
Seen her twice and man does she put on a show
Yes!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I'm an In This Moment fan and I love Maria with my heart, but I don't think she takes care of her voice properly, she said once in a interview that she didn't/don't take vocal lessons at all, so I'm kinda worry for her health 🥺 I guess she's just lucky for not having any serious problem this whole time
😀
I want to take lessons. I mean I've been in chorus in middle and high school and I've gotten better, but idk. I don't feel like I'm good enough to do what I want to do. I've finally gotten where I can sing higher (I used to not let myself sing higher and I'd get strained), but I'm still not great. I guess I want to be able to have someone who can help me one on one and help me be more confident.
Maria’s magnetism put us in the necessity to close our eyes to fully appreciate her voice 😂✨
Happy 2020 Ken (and all the staff) !!!
Thank you! Happy New Year!
I do think her voice has changed a lot since this performance, this was so long ago now but I truly believe she's found her place within her voice these days. I'd love to hear them do an acoustic set NOW.
😊
In This Moment's theatrics in concert are awesome! The illusion's are crazy! I wasn't a fan of The Purge, but when I heard it live, the volume of Maria's shrieks at the end of the little rap bars keep her at "The queen of scream".
Hi Ken! Maria Brink needs your singing course as soon as possible. This is a code red situation. Someone needs to get her to your vocal academy this minute. With that said, I would be lying if I didn't admit that I did enjoy her whole carefree, free wheeling, braless attitude that made her performance a feast for the eyes if not necessarily the ears. Thanks for all the outstanding videos.
👍👍👍
Thank you for the analysis
😊
cool review Ken. Have never heard of this singer. love discovering new artists. thanks. Al
👍👍👍
Don't worry Ken, Maria has that effect on all of us lol, she's a gorgeous lady for sure. She does have some bad habits, but I still love listening to her sing.
Rock on! 👍
Youre hilarious ken, i was thinking the same about her outfit as well right before u said something. Great video as always!
Focus on the singing, Eric.
I wasn't to focused on her outfit Eric I saw her outfit but I was focused on her singing skills and abilities
I was looking too 😁
Stop it!
Very kind, fair, and well explained.
Thank you!
Can’t say this ticked the boxes for me. Interesting outfit. Best saying no more. Thanks ken. Happy new year my friend. Keep rockin 🎸
Happy New Year, theonlyredspecial!
I remember when Ken was doing his own music. I always liked him.
I so love watching your videos. Maybe if I had known 20 years ago what I've learned from you now I wouldn't have huge chunks missing from my voice. Or maybe I would, but at least I would have known better. God bless! Keep rockin'!
Thanks, Calleigh!
Ken, it was SO funny when you shut your eyes to listen 😂😂 I've got to be truthful...when she was singing it made me tense up and I thought of the same word as you..."painful". Have you ever had a sound run through you like an electric current? That's about the best way I can describe this performance. I have heard her singing on other videos and she sounded great, though. Hope you & your family have a Happy New Year 💙
👍👍👍
Pleease react to their new single "The In-Between". It came out yesterday and it's 🔥🔥🔥
😊
Yessss
We totally need this
I was looking at a few "vocal coaches" videos and jeez listening to you Ken talk about ACTUAL singing techniques and terms with actual examples of you singing shows just how real you are as a vocal coach.
👍👍👍
You should also check out the charismatic voice. She is also great at explaining terms.
I’m still waiting for a review on Cinderella Tom Keifer “Don’t know what you got” or “Heartbreak Station” 😎😎😎😎
Thanks for the suggestion, Larry! In the meantime check this out ua-cam.com/video/lTX0_e7xVyY/v-deo.html
So I just discovered you yesterday and, I've started singing Karaoke with my family a few weeks ago and she sorta sounded like me at times and I'm not completely familiar with your vocabulary but she kinda sounded as if she was like horsed or perhaps winded of course I think I've had strep throat for the past few weeks so I'm just taking it easy studying some of your instructionals here on UA-cam I very much appreciate the knowledge you are sharing! God bless, have a nice night!
👍👍👍
Wow first time watching your channel. Very informative and helpful...new sub😍
Awesome! Glad you're here!
Maria Brink is my absolute musical muse/idol---but I completely agree with you Ken. Thank you for this
Sure thing, Gemini Sun!
Nice 👍
Thank you!
Hey, Ken, Happy New Year from Spain!
Happy New Year!
I wish you did the first song in this show Lost at sea.
Because she sings with more power normally she is holding a lot of horse power back.
😊
Love in this moment. So nice to see you covering them. Maybe not an acoustic version next time. Love the channel!
Ryan Strauss 👍
Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy I do say you are the best vocal coach reaction I’ve seen. Being critical is extremely important. Thank you! I might have to look into your services. I’m 29 and have been singing since 9th grade. Started off screaming and I sing now even better arguably all self taught so far
Admire what you do, Ken. I've been complimentary of the work you've done with your students. For me, however, I would say that the whole stripped down, "booze and cigarettes" thing works for In This Moment. It's not for everyone, but for their songs it works.
Yeah man, that's definitely a fact, you know your shit ,when it comes to vocalist, and fashion, like those shirts Ken,carry on my friend, another great vid...
👍👍👍
Ha ha ha, Ken IS human 😊🔥💪🎶🎙️
👍👍👍
My choir instructor always told us that sitting down and singing took away a lot of power and control, yet I see a lot of singers sitting down.
I understand a lot of what you are saying.. because Amy Lee and Sharon Adel sing perfectly based on on your criteria.. but Maria brings the imperfect as the perfection.. Jeff Keith made a whole singing career singing just like this (band Tesla).. and Tesla was one of the best hard rock bands of the 1990s.. her voice does break and croak like you said.. but in ways that adds to the performance..
😀
Ken, you should check out their song 11:11. It's acapella and my favorite vocal performance of hers! Gives me chills!
👍👍👍
i ABSOLUTELY LOVE ITM and Maria Brink is the icing on the cake! A ton of attitood, passion and intensity. A perfect marriage of heaviness and melody altogether. Haven’t had the opportunity to catch them live but yeah i see what some of you mean by their ‘unplugged’ sets. Maria’s vocals and screams can cut thru your soul like a blade and hold her ground very well among the blistering guitars.
👍👍👍
You are best
No, you are!
@@kentamplin a lots of love from INDIA❤❤
Suggestion Udo dirkschneider live at rockpalast 2018 or any other udo live singing either accept or u.d.o songs. His singing style is so special and has not aged at all
👍👍👍
Never heard Maria sing with acoustic songs, but my first thought is she sounds like Amy Lee a bit.
If I remember correctly, this recording was from her second album, in the ‘way back’ and she was pretty choppy.
I would like to hear your thoughts on her singing in more recent songs. She has worked on this for a long time.
Thanks for the suggestion, Scale Freak!
Nice video. And nice t-shirt! 👍
Thanks, Nial!
Hi Ken, would you mind to make some video please about Russel Allen (Symphony X) singing technique from your professional point of view. Thank you 👍
👍👍👍
I don't think an acoustic performance is a fair judgement for what Maria Brink can do. Listen to her live performing anything but acoustic and she is phenomenal. Don't hate on an acoustic performance form a band that isn't know for acoustic anything.
Fair enough.
Good advice Ken, had a listen to one of her heavier songs likes to scream and it shows the issues in her Forever performance and hopefully she can recover her voice.
Hope so!
What did you listen to I'm HUGH fan? Listen to Joan of arc!!
Awesome Video,Ilove how you so openly admit that her looks are distracting XD
I'm curious,is there a possibilty to regain that range?
I may have missed you mentioning it in the video but how would you advice to go about problems like this, aside from trying not to get to this point in the beginning?
This is a great conversation for the forum, please consider posting there, you'll get great feedback! forum.kentamplinvocalacademy.com/
@@kentamplin Thank You,I will do that!
Hi Ken;
I think it would be really fitting to react to Linda Ronstadt. She has been inducted into the HOF this year. “ You’re No Good “ would be a great choice. She is an absolute legend with amazing crossover appeal. If it wasn’t for her the Eagles may not have existed. She even opened for Jim Morrison, and The Doors.
Thanks, and love your reaction vids.

AaaaaaaaHaaaa!
Thanks for the video.

good one!♡
👍👍
Great comments! It feels like her voice is "tired".
It does, Deborah!
The guitar melody sounds similar from the song "in my last mourning" by Thy Light.
👍👍👍
Hey Ken i love your reactions, but please can you make reaction to Mandopony's (Andrew Stein) live perfomances!!!
👍👍👍
Hahahahahaha yea I was a bit distracted too. That's what got me to click.. I'm terrible.. Lol
Kevin James 🙈
Awesome video!! I would love if you could review Seether! Rise Above This is a great first Seether song to listen to if you’re unfamiliar
Isn't this song from ITM's album that is more 'Within Temptation-sounding'...for lack of a better way to describe it? Its been awhile since I listened to that one.
👍
I see what you mean by distracting 🤣🤣 but yes pitchy but also soulful
👍
😂😂😂
Hey Ken - I'm curious how much of the rough parts were stylistic rather than her "losing it". I've seen her live performances several times where she seems to do this on demand...even when addressing the audience...perhaps to add a sexiness quality to the sound? It kind of reminds me of Yebba - My Mind, where a lot of people think she's having difficult time technically with the song but she's shown she is in complete control of her voice and it was simply to add emotion. Which reminds me, I have not seen you do a reaction to that song yet and you 100000% need to. She sang it live a week after her mom committed suicide and it's probably the best live performance I've ever seen. Rock on!
Thought provoking! Rock on, Jeremy!
@@kentamplin You're the expert! I was just throwing it out there wondering if she's doing it on purpose. :) So about that Yebba - My Mind reaction??? lol :)
Hey Ken, would you react to Even Flow by Pearl Jam live on MTV Unplugged? Always loved Eddie’s sound and would be interested in your analysis. Thanks!
👍👍👍
Hi Ken! Happy New Year! Please react to SODA STEREO PROFUGOS 2007! You won't regreat. Regards from Argentina.
Thanks for the suggestion.
It hurt. ( I had to mute it to type). I've been losing my voice too for whatever reason I cannot comprehend. I need help, Ken. Please. It's like I cannot sing high notes from my chest register at all anymore. I use t be able to project my voice and sing loud without screaming. Cannot do that anymore.
Have you been to my free singing forum, Flonoii Sana? It's a great place to ask all of your singing related questions and get feedback forum.kentamplinvocalacademy.com/
I think it's because she's singing songs that normally have a lot of vocal fry so on some more head voice notes are usually a lot louder and more fried than clean
Thanks for weighing in, Dan!
@@kentamplin omg you actually saw this I'm honoured aha!
@@fourleafproductions9788 🎃
Did you check out lost at sea at the same concert
hawks77 👍
Great analysis ...definitely parts of the song her struggles show up...and I'm sure she wishes she could smooth that up a little to go along with that great leathery weathered sound alot of us love...
She kept lost at sea cleaner but its probably easier on the chords and I'm assuming your intent as a vocal coach is finding or analyzing struggling moments to point out things to help
It would be cool to see a reaction to Tom Keifer singing back in the early days vs now after all that has happened with his voice. He should be the cautionary tale for every singer
👍👍👍
Ken: "Really, close your eyes!"
Me: "I don't wanna close my eyes." *Aerosmith
Miqdam Alkayyis 🤣
I appreciate Ken's honesty. I love Maria, but even at first listening I even heard some and noticed the range loss and pitch distortion. Glad he broke it down and I do hope Maria does take care of her voice.
tatiana is the queen of extreme music, she can still go really high and her growls are insane
Absolutely, Fire4ev!
Honestly I think the cracky falsetto is intentional just because it's acoustic. Could be wrong though
👍💜😀
Several years ago, I used to do Kurt Cobain screams. I would wait until my vocals were relaxed, which was always a few drinks in, when my vocal chords were good and dry.
This has hurt my range, and has virtually killed my falsetto, causing an unpleasing distortion (vocal nodes?)
For the past few years I have been working on singing healthier, and using less forced distortion in my voice. Is there any way to gain back vocal range and fix my falsetto? I feel it has gotten somewhat better, but progress is super slow.
Really great discussion for the forum. Please post there, beneath "General Singing". Other singers will benefit from the reply and you will receive great feedback from either myself or one of my commentators. It's free! forum.kentamplinvocalacademy.com/
She sounds like either a dramatic soprano or a full mezzo-soprano.
From Spain please. Reacts to Camilo Sesto: Getsemani ( live 1977 ).
👍👍👍
When I talk in crowd no one can hear my voice and its deep and get mixed with the crowd..plz help

@@kentamplin I am 14 yrs old ..if I had money I would definitely try that. .. if there is any video which will help me then recommend me... thank you..
Hey Ken, I highly recommend you do a vocal reaction to any of Hironobu Kageyama's live performances of the Dragon Ball Z theme song "CHA LA HEAD" I know, it's super nerdy and most people in America don'tknow who Hironobu is outside of anime fams, but I am an anime nerd lol. And regardless of if you speak japanese, (I don't currently) Hironobu is such a great live performer and singer. Though it would take listening to the TV cut of the opening theme first to judge if he hit the notes right on stage. The clearest highest quality cut of that is the opening for the Dragon Ball Z Kakarot video game.
Thanks for the suggestion, Orion!
@@kentamplin Hironobu is a big rock star in Japan mainly for doing various anime opening themes, and tokusatsu (live action super hero and/or monster show) openings
@@kentamplin I would have suggested some of Hiro's other work like the theme for Hikari Sentai Maskman or Zenki or Choujin Sentai Jetman, but of course to the western audience "CHA LA HEAD" from Dragon Ball Z is the best known Kageyama hit
Damnit I love her and shes ruining it for me by the way she walked out of the sonic temple show and then now this...... she's definitely not having her best day here....I've heard her with my own ears and she gives me goosebumps shes awesome!
Anthony Capolingua 👍
she gives an edgy feel to the song which imho makes this interpretation fascinating
😊
Hey Ken, could you do "Sometimes I like to lie" by AnnenMayKantereit? Would love to hear your professional opinion!
👍👍👍
Reacto to the best singer in spanish "Monica Naranjo Europa Live" her voice is amazing..
👍👍👍
Hello again Ken;
Here is a link to an amazing performance of “You’re No Good” Its like experiencing the song for the first time. Kind of reminds me of Vanilla Fudge doing “You Keep Me Hangin On” Seems to be a little editing but none-the-less a great performance from a Legend. My Heart breaks for her and her current health struggles.
Enjoy the performance ( If you haven’t seen it already)

You can post your demo on the forum. Thanks!
I agree to disagree... Her voice is great even with all of it's imperfections. I cannot evaluate her as a professional vocal coach, but I enjoy listening to her and I do not think it has anything to do with her appearance, as I am a woman.
😊
I'm right there with ya Ken, the dress is VERY distracting. Her body is a Wonderland 😍😍
All in all, she's a great singer/performer in her genre
Rock on! 😀
That was rough 😳
A good reminder to take good care of your voice, Steve!
How about you sing Itchoo park. Think about the changes in voice of that song
Thanks for the suggestion, Gino!
Would you please do a reaction to Jinjer please? It would be great to see you what you think.
I have!
She's pretty good Ken like you said she is a little pitchy I can tell with someone is pitchy also but so far she's pretty good not to bad I never heard of her but she's not the best but she's descent Ken but you can't sound great all the time live but I'm not saying she's terrible but she can sing but a lot of pitchyness so she's pretty good she's attractive but maybe she sounds better in other live performances but this one aint the best I'm not hating on her so I don't want you to think that Ken so yea she does have some rasp I like that but still a pretty good performance ken👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks, Cade.
Your welcome Ken
@@cadeevans4623 seen live they are awesome. Ck out Joan of arc.
They may be awesome in other live performances but this one she wasn't the best pitchy and ok
Ken, have you reacted to anything live by Miley Cyrus? She has a very unique voice and certainly doesn't need AutoTune. Her performance of Slide Away at the MTV VMA's is good, and plenty more of her songs. She's talented for sure (much unlike her dad IMHO).
Not yet.
@@kentamplin I also just saw a live video of her doing Say Hello 2 Heaven at a Chris Cornell tribute. I can't stand that style of music, but she does grunge rock well. She is versatile and has more of a voice than Katy, Taylor, Halsey, Ariana, etc.etc. I've watched a few of her live videos and she always nails it, no matter what genre.
Yes. Her vocal was unbelievable. The way she mixes scream with clean voice was epic. She was straining so much here tho.
Her vocal was way better in blood (acoustic) or whore. It was a few years after, she got vocal training probably
👍
I'd love to see a reaction to Tom Waits
😊
She may get more air flow if she stood up also sounds like she pushin hard to get out a word but def hear the strain in her vocals
Rock on!
That's such an outdated video though. Her voice has definitely changed . You should do a reaction on her currently.
Thanks for the suggestion, ao luxe!

React To floor jansen ^^
I have.
It’s hard for metal singers to tone it down for acoustic performances, so kudos to her for even trying. It’s really not her style, but she did the best she could👍 I mean, what if Jack Johnson attempted to perform his songs in the screamo style she dominates? It would be equally difficult on his voice as this was on hers.
True, Daniel!

Muahahaha!
Funny thing is. People, the listeners usually like to hear this type of sound, dysphonic. Not a clean one. Proof to this is the amount of schooled singers with a clean sound who got their studies on point, day in and day out practicing. Then there are the people who lose their clean voice indefinitely and are left with a natural or unnatural raspy voice like Lemmy for example. Maria is amazing, but I bet that rasp tickles her vocal chords when she sings. I always wondered what Beth Hart feels in her throat when she sings or Steven Tyler if we are at that!
Emilian 👍
Please please please react to Beth Hart
