45 years ago it was decided that buses shall be "fine" without conductors. Modern technology can replace a human being was what our trade union told us with a temptation of a 25% pay rise if we drive conductorless buses. I was the only one in our union that voted against . if we had a conductor and a national health service mental health section ,this man would have got some help. The public including the man would be safer,more comfortable in the belief if one of us is ill,the action taken will not be by an over worked police officer but by a properly trained mental health worker
We do have a mental health section in the NHS. It doesn't always work despite being well funded. In the same way bursaries are given to fresh new 18 year olds to entice them into a teaching career while they're still students, you lower standards and saturate the profession instead. Extra funding does not solve all problems and doesn't guarantee certain improvements. I know the mental health sector well. There's plenty of new graduates without an interest in psychology and genuine care. They visit houses and hand out worksheets without investment in their clients. It's an overreach to say this man's problems would be solved had there been more money for conductors and the NHS.
