I will note that Verbal Judo has a bit of a weakness: it really works best when you have a position of authority (not just law enforcement- Thompson was presenting this to teachers and other service professionals). It was still a springboard to my current study of Dialectical Behavior Therapy. I have used Verbal Judo- it's still useful as an introduction to "tactical communication" and verbal self-defense in general.

Before George had his vocal cord cancer and the cord itself removed, he sounded so much like John Goodman. Besides the point. We lost a great man, teacher, police officer and father figure. Condolences go to his family and friends. He lives on through his work. Keep up the principals. R.I.P George

This is the most brilliant, breathtaking talk I have ever seen with very specific steps on how to handle any situation such as: bullies, drunks, military, police action, SALES, etc. These are real meat steps, no potatoes. Just one gem after the next. Very precision techniques. This guy is a bad ass. PhD, Cop, Negotiator, and physically tough and strong. Well worth every minute. NOTE TO FOREIGNERS. His voice is very rough and he explains why. Some words are garbled. But you may want to have a native speaker help you out on some points.

This is a great video, and is a terrific supplement to Dr. Thompson ' book "Verbal Judo: The Gentle Art of Persuasion." I have found the principles to be highly effective, and in his presentations he comes across as a charming and charismatic speaker. In scanning the Comments section, however, I am stunned by comments demeaning him for his physical presence (a "thug"...really?), and insensitive and boorish comments about his breathing and voice. As noted by Doc himself, he was struggling with cancer at the time. Idiots who make comments about his breathing and voice either didn't watch the introductory remarks or were too dense to process them. And wisecracking about how he should quit smoking are just plain insensitive. RIP George. You are missed.

Unbelievable that people would fault him for those things. Way to focus on the unimportant and overlook what matters! It’s like a paramedic who gives you CPR snd saves your life… and you complain that he has bad breath and ripped your shirt collar. This is a truly great teacher, a unique, brilliant, original, and utterly inspiring human being. The volume of life experience, reflection, and insight distilled into his lectures is just extraordinary.
(I put his lectures alongside Patrick Winston’s on public speaking and Larry McInerny’s on writing as masterpieces of our time.)

You will find that most people on UA-cam comments lack simple intelligence and instead are the first and loudest to display their ignorance.
It's best to hold fast to your own intellectual capacity, for even average intelligence is miles above what you will find from those commenters.
They will scoff and defend themselves, because they flee in the face of something they consider monumental to their own stature.

I believe his legacy will last for at least decades.. if not the next 100 years. Increasingly for the last 10 years has become increasingly acceptable for customers to act aggressively... not to mention the effect of drugs on society. I know 2 people who had to leave work as a result. The aggression is so normal and acceptable now it is destroying vast numbers in society.

I have had the full three day course for law enforcement twice at two different academies and it is absolutely wonderful..The course like this one is similar but there are significant differences in the LE version that doesn't apply to civilians. IT WORKS, AGAIN, IT WORKS One principal taught to LEO is that you are not paid it is not part of your job description to insult or scream at people. For civilians you do not get paid to be upset and respond negatively.

two thumbs up to this gentleman. read his book, re-read it tonight by watching this video. conflicts can wound us but as long as we approach it with a growth mindset our skin will thicken and we will become more proficient and professional in our handling of it. I'm naturally a highly collaborative and emotionally sensitive person who tends to avoid conflict as much as possible. been working hard to improve this category and luckily have had a fair share of interpersonal conflicts/angry persons verbally attacking me in recent months. although the sting never fully goes away (yet), the mind calluses with experience and it gets easier with every incident. carry on ladies and gents!

Verbal Judo = Anything/everything you said can be used against you.
People who use Verbal Judo will take whatever you said and turned around.Even if they have to changing the issue, they will go around and around and around. At some point U will be so frustrate that U will stop your arguments (no way to win). The best way to win to verbal judo is... Stop you reasonable arguments/don’t said anything. Why? Because the other side does not care for the truth/facts, only care to win the argument.

Doc Rhino has been at it for a long time. I went through the academy in 1990 and watched his seminar in 1991. It stuck with me and improved my ability to defuse situations. It's a big tool for your toolbox that has many settings. Over time that tool develops and grows into a multi use tool that you'll use on and off the job as well as with your kids, girlfriends, wife(wives). Stay safe and thanks Doc.

I can't find it now, but I recall seeing a video , I think the original video of this training from the 90s for law enforcement I guess it was. George was much younger etc.. And there was a comment that said something to the affect of "its' a great lecture, but it assumes a (maybe accurate at the time) general environment of respect between law enforcement and the every day citizen, which we don't have now, etc etc." I don't recall all the details and I'd say the techniques in general here are great, but I do wonder if the actual law enforcement training stuff he did in the 90s could work now after years of change in culture about cops etc.

So his strategy is to teach the technique of Judo without all that fluff of self-knowledge and meditation on virtue...
In Aristotle's society, there was no police force because Athens was a city of thinkers:
"I have gained this by philosophy: that I do without being commanded what others do only from fear of the law." Also, not doing what is unjust in the name of the law.

I have an expartner that is extremely difficult to deal with. I have been scared of his bullying behaviour for a long time because it feels like I have been going to battles with him for our son using only my feet to run away or a shield of lawyers/ignoring which inevitably breaks, and nothing to take assertive action with that will make him step back, just requiring other people to deal with him like LEO, judges etc. This video is the first I've come across with enough information to empower me with any situation I am called to resolve from his behaviour. Absolutely treasured material here.

Interesting lecture, well presented however still processing on whether this all should actually apply to all business situations and cultures. Most cases presented are based on dealing with either children or people who law enforcement deals with daily so I am wondering on just how well these models work in business in various countries globally. However people who do not follow rules and/or cause conflict in a workplace environment usually have some kind of issues with authority from home making them noncompliant and generally time consuming to work with. Will watch more to find answers, again thanks for posting this lecture. It was really great and provided lots of useful tools and insight

Great lecture but this addresses a severe problem in corporate and modern work places management and level employees trying to use this munipulative tone on smart Americans, firstly if youve never been on the streets you cant learn to use grammar games on people who are actually lived and experienced it.. I do see the need to teach these young people courteousy and how to respectly talk to people since they never learned it at home. But again, this as dr Thompson said is a slippery slope and employer's , nor employees, "dont need to be teaching people to police and engage strangers anywhere, that should always be funnel towards security officers and Law Enforcement Agencies. Supervisors should never put themselves nor anyone else in harms way. Its not worth it. Corporation have tried to usurp law enforcement Agencies because they have a few Gov Federal funding which is illegal, without an Agency license on prpoerty also, some also are arbitrarily setting up ghost secret investigating quote on quote, inside these hospitals and other 501C3 S, Corp etc, without Agency licence..??
Kind regards R.I.P. Officer Dr Thompson

I'm going to try hard to practice this when clients are racist to me at work. Golly, if I get harassed one more time, like spit on, for being Asian American I will start a gofundme to go back to the country my parents came from, and I will give up on the United States as a symbol of freedom.

Huh, I've already been using the springboard deflection on homeless people who harass me (it's common in my community). It's really useful to get away from what ever they're saying to the matter of fact, that I don't have money or cigarettes to hand them.

1:10:00 thru 1:15:00, I was that boy, and my father and mother were those father and mother. And now, everyone tells me how smart I am, and I work construction, Im in insane debt, Im an alcoholic, and I listen to the students giggle. And I know they dont feel the gravity of this mans words. Is that because he is so good or they are so simple. I dont know. But I think an hour and a half isnt 1% of what we need to learn and integrate what this man is teaching us.

As a person who has a hard time taking criticism. When he starts talking about if you mention the negative first your done is totally right. It just shuts you off and makes think your being reprimanded.

Anyone know what the second secret to working with people he started talking about at 1:29:32? 1) you've got to learn to help people build ground to stand on, to help save face. 2) Notice by using the 5 steps...?
