  • This is a TAS of Dig Dug played on the GBA game "Namco Museum - 50th Anniversary". I don't know why it does this, but the sprites alternate between two similar images rapidly.

      well this is a TAS but using rocks is also the proper way to play the game at high levels. in addition to vegetable spawns being directly tied to them (a vegetable is guaranteed to spawn after the second rock is dropped in a round), it's just the most efficient way to clear the enemies and score points

    Looks like the TASer was setting up a pentakill at the end, but didn't pull it off. In a regular speedrun, I'd understand, but I don't see why you'd let it fail like this in a TAS.

    • @ComplexOri
      @ComplexOri 2 роки тому +12

      Would have been cool, but I don’t think they were trying for the maximum efficiency and was content how the TAS turned out. I don’t know how much work it takes, but I bet it takes a good handful of hours for a short speedrun like this

    What's with the music being indecisive about whether to be DAC or PSG?

    • @TheBeeshSpweesh
      @TheBeeshSpweesh 2 роки тому +8

      The GBA only has 1 channel dedicated to playing wavetables (out of the 6 it has), so they had to use the 2 pulse wave channels to get any other sounds playing at once. They could've fixed this issue by emulating the NAMCO WSG in software, but I bet there wasn't really enough CPU time on the GBA to do it.

    • @TheRealHedgehogSonic
      @TheRealHedgehogSonic 2 роки тому +6

      @@TheBeeshSpweesh I figured that might've been the case. I was confused since the GBA's two DACs have done so much more before than 1 sample at a time, and it wouldn't make sense for a simplistic game like Dig-Dug to eat at its memory.

    • @TheBeeshSpweesh
      @TheBeeshSpweesh 2 роки тому +6

      @@TheRealHedgehogSonic I'm not sure if this is an emulation or a straight port. I assume its the former, so using the hardware PSG was certainly beneficial.

      ?
      There's dirt around the stage, your guy can dig through the dirt but he takes a speed penalty. The enemies can't dig through dirt but they can enter a "ghost" mode where they phase through the dirt. The goal of each level to kill all the enemies. Normally you do this by sending out a projectile that prevents both you and the enemy from moving. You finish off the enemies by then bashing the action button causing them to explode.
      All the pick ups are just for points.
