I know, I know-it’s been ages, hasn’t it? I imagine it’s a bit of a shock to see me again after everything that’s happened, after all this time, and everything we went through. To be honest, I never expected to see you again, not after all the chaos, not after the disaster that tore through Black Mesa and sent us all spiraling into this strange new reality. But here we are, and that, in itself, is a small miracle. We survived, didn’t we? Against all the odds, we’re still here, still standing, and even though the world feels like it’s been utterly changed, in some ways, seeing you again feels like a thread tying us back to something we lost. Something real, something that feels almost impossible given everything we’ve experienced. But maybe I’m getting ahead of myself, Gordon. Maybe I should start from the beginning-back when Black Mesa was just another government research facility, just another location, tucked away in the desert, going about its business. Just another piece of the vast machinery of science, a world where we thought we understood the limits of the universe, thought we could push the boundaries of physics, of knowledge itself. I don’t think anyone really understood what was at stake when they started playing with forces far beyond our comprehension. The resonance cascade, the tearing of space and time, the opening of rifts between dimensions-none of it was supposed to happen. We were supposed to be making breakthroughs in science, unlocking the mysteries of the universe, and instead, we unlocked something far darker, far more dangerous. We didn’t just break the laws of physics, Gordon, we broke the very fabric of reality. We opened doors to other worlds, and in doing so, we invited horrors into ours-alien creatures, hostile entities, things that defied description, things we couldn’t even begin to understand. I remember the day it happened, like it was burned into my mind. I can still hear the alarms ringing, that shrill, high-pitched sound that reverberated through the entire facility. The panic-it was like something straight out of a nightmare. Scientists and engineers running through the halls, desperate to understand what had just happened, but already knowing that it was far too late to do anything about it. The walls, the very air itself, seemed to warp and twist as the rift tore open, spilling its alien horrors into our world. Some of the creatures, I swear to you, Gordon, I don’t even know how they exist-some of them looked like they were born from the deepest recesses of human imagination, born from the darkest corners of our minds. And the soldiers. The military-they were sent in with one objective: contain the situation. But they weren’t there to protect us, Gordon. They were there to silence us, to erase every trace of what had happened, to cover up the truth. We were expendable to them, just pawns in a much bigger game that none of us were privy to. They didn’t care about the truth, about what we had uncovered in that facility-they just cared about stopping the world from learning about it, from learning about the mess we had created. But somehow, even as everything fell apart, even as we fought for our lives, we survived. You and I, Gordon. But in truth, we were just trying to survive, trying to make it out alive. And when the dust settled, and we were left standing in the ruins, I think we realized something: nothing was ever going to be the same again. The world had been irrevocably changed, and we were part of that change. It’s been years since that day, and yet, it feels like no time has passed at all. The world we knew-the world before Black Mesa-is gone. That world was shattered when the resonance cascade happened, and the consequences of our actions echo through every corner of this broken reality. I don’t think we’ll ever truly understand the full extent of what we unleashed on this world. But the truth is, it’s not just the creatures, the rifts, or the military that we have to face anymore. It’s the aftermath-the endless rebuilding, the constant struggle to make sense of what’s left, the unknown consequences that continue to unfold in ways we can’t predict. It’s like we’ve become part of some larger puzzle, a piece that was meant to fit into something far bigger than any of us could have ever imagined. The world now is fractured, Gordon. The world we once knew-gone. There’s no going back, no undoing the damage that’s been done. But even in the midst of all this destruction, I can’t help but wonder: is there still hope? Is there still something worth saving, something worth fighting for? I think that’s the one thing that keeps me going-the thought that maybe, just maybe, there’s something we can still do. The world is broken, yes, but it’s not completely broken, not yet. As long as we’re here, as long as we’re alive, maybe we can make a difference. It’s not even the military, the ones who were sent in to cover everything up. The most terrifying thing is the knowledge that we’re living in a world that’s been altered beyond recognition. We’ve crossed a threshold, Gordon, and there’s no going back. But even as the world changes, we still have the power to shape what comes next. I don’t know what the future holds, but I know this: we’re in this together. Whatever happens, we’ll face it side by side, just like we did before. We’ve made it this far, Gordon. And I believe that, together, we can make it through whatever comes next. After all, we’ve survived the worst. And if we’ve survived that, maybe there’s nothing in this broken world that can stop us."
