Plus: who is Lauren M. Davis? Is she a Cait Corrain sockpuppet, or an AI writer? Who is Nova, and is her playlist any good? CAN you copyright the sun? And what makes this book so interesting and controversial anyway?

The three layered story just seemed so weird. Like, it's about a girl who writes a story about someone living someone else's experiences. You could easily take out one of those layers, preferably two.
I have nothing against an absurd story, embracing absurdity might even be a virtue, but I draw the line at inefficient, unflavorful storytelling

the funniest part for me is the whole "she never had reason to bleed" and you mention she's a 17 year old girl and then you start listing things of potential accidents she can have gotten into with her type of work which - correct.
and I assume you glossed over it because of reasons but man this girl had had reason to bleed 5 days every month for at LEAST 3-5 years.

Yeahhh I was trying to drive home the “17 year old GIRL” part but the conversation just kept going from there

I really love the critique format of this podcast. It is very useful for me as a writer, and also fun to listen to you guys seriously discussing some of these unhinged plots.
Edit: also, when it comes to writers suggesting playlists for their books I think it's not a good idea. When I write I listen a lot to music and much of my inspiration comes from music and lyrics, but my taste in music will not be for everyone reading my books, and even someone who likes the music might not see how it ties to the books. Adding a playlist of random songs to a novel is just going to make the story inaccessible to most readers.

Exactly, it’s just way too subjective. I may love your writing and hate your taste in music, why take the risk?

I think sharing a playlist could be fun thing to do, but the ideal method would be something like posting it on the author's personal website. Putting it somewhere a dedicated fan could seek it out if they wanted to. Putting it in the novel itself, I agree, does not seem like a good idea.

*finally sitting down to watch*: ooh there’s drama! Spill the tea! (In between critique)
Edit: yeah, this is so far filled with unintentional racism. AND SHES 17!! HER PERIOD SHOULD HAVE BEEN GOING ON LONG ENOUGH TO STABILIZE!!
Edit 2: so, just a quick question. Where is the indigenous tribe again. Cuz I’m not sure there are any roses. And, if it’s the desert, THERE AREN’T ANY PANTHERS EITHER!!! FFS GEOGRAPHY! She can look at a map! (Sorry, I was an anthropology undergrad)
Edit 3: (this is the last one) why is ‘Otherlands’ the best video game book I’ve read so far……so many of these ‘video game’ stories suck so much 😢

2: they’re (supposed to be) navajo. I don’t remember it was specified but it’s in the desert so I’m guessing Arizona

@@sbu_englishclub everything surrounding the non-white peoples was so deeply racist it was painful to listen to. Also yay I’m not the only person who’s heard of the Otherlands series! There was actually a video game based on the books that came out a while ago, though it failed & I think it’s lost media at this point.

Ideas are cheap to those that can create more. They seem precious to those that cannot.
I've literally posted my massive web serial online for free. No one has stolen it in 5+ years. I'd be amused if someone tried. The paranoia about people stealing your ideas is fascinating to watch. The sarcastic side of me always thinks, "Yeah... They're going to totally steal your idea and get in on that part of the literary scene you've cornered... Which is...?" Not that such things haven't happened, but... People are going to rip off ideas from things that have made at least millions. I mean, if you are going to risk the lawsuit, make sure you steal something that'll make you enough to pay off the plaintiff in the settlement.
(NOTE: This is my non-lawyer knowledge, geared towards the United States.)
Here's the thing, copyright doesn't cover ideas. Copyright covers the fixed-form specific representation in the real world. There have been historical cases where people have tried to use copyright to do general ideas, but that got shut down multiple times. It's all down to the very specifics of a work. Technically, if you change the wording of a work, it becomes a new work, under a new copyright.
Now, for figuring out if something is derivative, it becomes a bit of The Ship of Theseus argument. Different federal court jurisdictions have different tests they use. But, usually, determination of whether a work is derivative of another focuses upon combinations of specific elements (character, plot, wording, and other elements) in one work that are unique enough, that if replicated in another work would make a definitive connection to the original work. See Anderson v. Stallone. Now, on the flip side, the combinations can't be so general and common in the "public domain", see Nichols v. Universal Pictures Corp.
In other words, generic attributes for a vague character outside of a work doesn't get copyright protection, hence no protections against derivative works.

Yeahhh a big part of fearing your ideas will get stolen is the implicit egotism. Your ideas probably aren’t as good and/or original as you think, and realizing that is part of maturing as an artist. It can take people a long time to get out of that headspace

@@sbu_englishclub Shaking that "Golden Ticket" mentality with ideas is a hard one. I mean, I think a lot of us still have a little "Winning Lotto Ticket" mentality behind some of our favorite ideas. But, once you get experience and knowledge about most creative industries... That gets downgraded to just a "Lotto Ticket" mentally: Yeah, it's got potential but will it actually hit? Probably not, and not for anything worth mentioning. Ideas are easy, implementation is HARD.
When it comes to getting your ego in check, I always remember the anime Mob Psycho 100 and the many lessons in that series.
