    Why am I reminded of the line from Hank Hill in King of the Hill: "You're not making Christianity better, you're just making Rock & Roll worse."

      @@sbu_englishclub King of the Hill has so much wisdom woven into it.
      On a slightly serious note, there's one line from a Bollywood movie called "OMG - Oh My God" (2012) that also comes to mind with these authors:
      "They are not God loving people, they are God fearing people."
      The movie is well worth a watch.

    Holding my breath through this ENTIRE video
    I’ve been to The Ark. One summer, I felt the need to sort and count as many coins as I could. Over the years, my grandparents had been dropping spare change into these two big jars in the back of their closet, so my grandma got them out and I sat at the kitchen table for hours, sorting and counting until my fingertips smelled like copper.
    By the time everything had been sorted, counted and put into penny rolls, there was over $350 in just coins alone. Both grandparents were shocked by how much money they literally had just lying around, and they decided to use the change on a roadtrip with me and my siblings. We went to The Ark, of course. I don’t remember much about the actual structure apart from the fact that I liked the music playing on repeat over the sound system, and a few of the living areas felt super liminal, a feeling that I couldn’t name back then, but have always appreciated. Honestly I remember more about the food we had at the buffet nearby and the cool as hell playground that my siblings and I fell in love with after we’d all gotten bored of the big boat.
    Now I’m just sitting here, not sure if I should be awed or horrified by the fact that an entire Noah’s Ark trilogy was written because of that, ‘theme park.’-theme ark?-and also silently dreading the fact that an idea I’ve been toying with for a novel definitely counts as Bible fanfiction. Oh god-

    • @sbu_englishclub
      @sbu_englishclub  4 місяці тому +2

      What an experience! And here I am in awe of the park because of my exposure to the trilogy. I do love the term “theme ark”
      As for your book, I hope this episode isn’t discouraging. At no point do J or I discount stories/themes/settings sourced from the Bible as a bad idea inherently-the problem with the Noah trilogy is how vestigial and untransformative it is, ESPECIALLY given the authors had a capital A Agenda
      Your “Bible fanfiction” will be just fine as long as you’re willing to commit to what you’re doing. It doesn’t matter whether it’s apologetics or anti-Christian; it’s this book’s lack of identity that really made it fail in my opinion

    I love how this story has the progression of, like, a colony/town builder sim game where you recruit NPCs. Obviously you start out with your basic farmer, who has the most in-depth backstory because you need to play through SOMETHING as a tutorial. Then the NPC you decide to romance, marry, and reproduce with immediately because there's no point in delaying that mechanic. And, after unlocking the ship-building skill, you find the NPC who lets you start ore production... Also there's dinosaurs and a seductive evil woman to clickbait people into downloading it and watching one million Bible app ads.
    But is the player Noah, or is the player God?
    Anyways, I think a better use of a biblical period piece as framing for a story would be a Bridgerton-style modern bodice ripper that fails at every level of social or religious commentary while also pissing off people who don't look any further than its cover. Or musicals. I would listen to Andrew Lloyd Webber add a musical about Noah to his biblical repertoire.

    • @sbu_englishclub
      @sbu_englishclub  6 місяців тому +1

      your ideas definitely would have made it more interesting-a bodice ripper would definitely have the sin the authors want to convey

    Since I grew up under Young Earth Creationism, evangelicalism/fundamentalism, and purity culture, I could fill up another hour with things to say about this book. But y'all covered most of it in your discussion. For me, the biggest thing is how such a strict adherence to "the Truth" (in any ideology) squashes creativity. Imagination is not encouraged in these circles.
    As to the discomfort in the scenes between Noah and his wife, I believe some of that stems from the fact that the authors were very uncomfortable writing a romance. After all, romance almost always involves sex. What if if kids read about two people referencing sex? Then these kids would start to think about it, inflaming their imaginations, and that's a very heavy transgression to have on one's conscience! The only good way to bring up sex is to link it with motherhood.
    As to why they wrote this book -- partly because evangelical/fundy people crave fantasy and escapism, but most of it isn't allowable under their belief system. This book feeds that need. (So does Amish romance, but that's a different subject.)

      This is great insight! With iron mining operations on the pterodactyl cliffs I didn’t notice a lack of imagination but you’re totally right
      Also brb, looking into amish romances 👀👀

    What's so weird is that I read an actually-published Noah fanfiction series (it was three novels maybe?) back in the early 2000s. I think it was Tyndale or some other big Christian publisher. I can't find it online but I remember it being pretty boring. This trilogy is so much more interesting/unhinged.
