Sending this to my friends who are Cormac McCarthy fans, and not tell them half of the video is a podcast. I want them to sit with the dread that they might be watching a 30 minute bit.
It's so depressing that these incredibly up-their-own-ass corporate marketing types are the ones who rule publishing and so many other creative industries nowadays. It's so frustrating to see people who have never experienced art and creativity in their lives are the ones who control what art and expression is allowed to exist in the world and who gets to make a living off of it and who doesn't. :P
I don't know McAveney beyond this hour-long moderated discussion but it strikes me as so odd that like... I don't even trust her to tell me what a book IS. You'd think that if you're the CEO of an older-than-dirt publishing house you'd at least somewhat care about books as art, right?
Honestly never really got the hype about how uncanny that empress theresa cover art supposedly was until you showed it close up in excruciating detail for like four minutes straight, and now i understand completely. So thanks for that!
@@sbu_englishclub That's really about all I've heard, sadly, but the speculation behind it was capitalizing on the recent surge of booktok, so likely targeting viral authors, maybe scouting an established one or two for authenticity.

Having seen this conversation live, I just kept thinking about it. Not gonna lie though, the Empress Theresa bit had me going.
