📚 Description: The Jimi Hendrix 1969 Gibson Flying V is the one we will unbox and review today. His custom ordered 1969 has always been one of my favorite obscure guitars even though there was already a "tribute" model done in 1991 - it was great to see a formal custom shop release!

He only was responsible for such great records by Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Peter Frampton, Mott the Hoople, Carley Simon, John Mayall, Ten years after, Small Faces, and KISS to name a few! Many claim he made Hendrix the legend he was because Eddie actually made Jimi tune his guitar correctly and put the time in to practice before recording such amazing records as "Electric Ladyland". I only hope you were being sarcastic! BTW, Eddie also was a great photographer and took many legendary photos of Hendrix.

Edit - yes, it was owned by Hard Rock, I played it at HRC London in ‘03. Those pictures you showed was the same guitar wit various other bits of Hendrix’ collection; his sofa, scarves, shirts, etc.
When I started working for the same Hard Rock in ‘12 i asked about it and “Jimi,” as they call it, was being sent around to various Hard Rock Cafes for a few months at a time as a kind of “tour” type thing.

Not for metal dive bombs tough, but just as a good Bigsby (- 'm a fan and use that also) very reliable tuning-wise, under almost constant pressure. Yes, a good tuner doesn't hurt, but works absolutely within the acceptable limits.

Yep, it just looks super cheesy. Gibson is a great guitar manufacturer and a shitty “relicing” company, they’re throwing their hat in that ring because it’s all the rage right now to fake years of authentic wear and tear on a guitar. Would be cooler if they just left it new, don’t understand why things have to have artificial “personality” inserted in when everybody knows it’s a new guitar anyway.

Hate the relicing, always hate the relic jobs. But, love this guitar. I have a '18 Explorer that's got that mojo that few instruments have right from the start. Really love the split diamond inlays. That would be a nice touch for Gibson to add to all the V's. The super pointy headstock with vertical inlay is a nice touch too. Over priced in my opinion, but nice collector piece. God bless and Merry Christmas 🎄🎸😎

Sort of true if you watch the old Jimi vids where he played Gibson, the neck scale didn't fit his new experience playing ... as was kind of the case for Leo strats, oddly the CBS - 'Woodstock' version was dialed in to Hendrix and made his style rock-et. I played the original one in 2003. It even had Hendrix's strings back on, the ones he played on Isle of Wight. BTW they were 10's if I'm not mistaken. However, the original one is a left handed model, most probably the only left handed guitar Jimi ever had. I played it while sitting on a bench from the Jimi's apartment in London.

Is there anyway to find out what the original pick ups were on his custom order? Would he have gotten Tops at that. Thanks for any feedback you might have have a custom Karina flying V and was going to have the paint job redone to match his love drops, but without the gold hardware going with aged nickel, looks more classic to me, but I want to buy the best possible pick ups are closest match to what he had. Thanks.

Just imagine if a model like this one were being manufactured as a standard model instead of a signature one. Do you think the ratio between righty and lefty would still be 5 to 1?
Two other people frequently associated with the body shape include Albert King and Dave Davies. Would Gibson ever make models with their scroll attached?

Not long after Jimi died I was having a pint in the double A. Pub in Airdrie Scotland with Eric Barret's younger brother. Eric was Jimi's stage manager. He knew that I played guitar and asked if I wanted to come down and see it. Unfortunately I had to pass because I stayed up at Longrirggend about ten miles away and would have missed my last bus home. I know Eric also got the white strat and Monica Danneman got the black one. Do I regret this now ? Not really " I've still got my guitar" to quote Jimi. Have a peaceful Christmas.

even guitarists with a specific guitar that they have become ubiquitous with, can play and enjoy other instruments. ritchie blackmore with a 335, jimmy page with a tele, tony iommi with a strat. players who are famous for their tone with a specific instrument want variety too. i wish i could see SRV play a strandberg boden classic, and hendrix on a kiesel. idk just to see how they would feel and what they would play.

Idk of it's worth noting but unless the pickups in the original have been documented being a 67 with gold hardware the pickups could be patent # or t tops. Gold hardware got used slower since it's on less guitars. That's why you occasionally find gold PAFs in the mid 60s, and gold patent # as late as 69.

Don't know about the Gibsins he may have played but his Strat was a right handed that he played normally strung for the intended use. Fender did a reissue run where they made both. I've only ever known one person personally that plays their guitar the same way Hendrix did.

Hendrix re-strung his right handed guitars to play like a Lefty. Dana Fair is the only guitar player I personally know that plays a normally strung right handed guitar upside down and backwards because he's Left handed and learned that way as a kid

‘The pressure seemed to have eased off at that point. He knew he wasn’t happy with the Band of Gypsy’s, but he hadn’t got anything else going on. It was a very comfortable time for the two of us. Whence the idea came I know not-maybe the management, maybe Jimi , maybe a bit of both-but the plan was “why don’t we-form the Experience?’
I suspect the deal was that he would ultimately cover some of the places we’d not been to, like Japan and Australia; in fact rumor has it there were people selling tour jackets for Japan. Of Course, we never got there in the end. I’m not sure how Noel got the call but I don’t think he’d even seen Jimi for six months. There was a meeting at the management office in New York with the three of us and then a lengthy interview with Rolling Stone, during which we announced the tour.
After the interview Jimi went back to his apartment and I went back to my hotel and within a few hours I’d got a call from him. ‘Could we meet up?’ Musically the conversation was over in a very short time. It came down to ‘What do you think?’ I knew that he meant Noel. It was very tricky. Jimi and I had great affection for Noel as a player and for his humour, but something didn’t feel right.’
