    📚 Description: Slightly before Summer NAMM 2021, Gibson teased this new Korina Collection of 81 Flying Vs and 19 Explorers for a total of 100 guitars. Marketed as a Collector's Edition with Brazilian rosewood fretboards and being lightly aged by the Murphy Labs division, these were incredibly expensive guitars. The Explorers were $30,000 new and the Flying V was $20,000 each. Today, we are going to take a look into the first of the series - the Korina Flying V

      Over 21grand for a Korina wood brand new guitar? Is it made of gold or are people stupid for buying these things? I guess they won't be making normal versions as to keep them rare. This is why I hate Gibson. Greedy bastards with all the collector guitars....they didn't do that with the original company and had much more integrity

    If you *actually* wanted to play one of these things, instead of hanging it on a wall as a collectors item, there are world-class luthiers that'll build an exact replica for 1/4 of the price.
    My feeling on these things is that they aren't actually intended to be brought on tour or played in a band. It's literally so rich guys can have a showroom in their mansion.

    I really wish Gibson would do a VOS version. I’d be in immediately! If I were to go after a $20,000 guitar, it would be a vintage Strat.
    It’s crazy how fast these things se out at those prices.
    And yes, the “new” Gibson relicing is far better. The cold/hot finish checking is realistic, just very accelerated. It’s happened to a few of my nitro finished guitars by being in a cold car and going into a warm house. Even while in the case.

    • @pharmerdavid1432
      @pharmerdavid1432 2 роки тому

      Yes, if you want to "age" your nitro finish, and live in a cold winter climate, just let it get cold then bring it in to heat rapidly! I may do that to my Gibson Songbird Deluxe from 1998 and 1994 Southern Jumbo Deluxe (Rosewood J-45 type). They both have some lines in their lacquer from inadvertently letting the hot/cold thing happen, so why not go all the way..? I want the necks smooth though, but I can always sand them down. I love old nitrocellulose lacquer, but usually not sticky new finish, especially the way Gibson does it now, with questionable undercoats. Done properly, a good nitro finish will bond with the wood, hardening over time, to actually help make the wood sound even better as its resins dry - that's what takes decades. Those old Martin dreds with that crisp tone is something you can only get with time, at least I've never heard new guitars that sound like that...?

    The Dave Davies story (of the Kinks) is legendary in Flying V lore, how he found an old unsold original on top of a cabinet while on an emergency search for a replacement guitar in LA, and it became his standard axe. I have one of the tribute models and can attest to how fricking light these guitars are to hold.

Check out the live album “Attack of the killer V” if you wanna hear some lightning fast blues and loud wonderful tone. He was also Stevie Ray Vaughn’s favorite player. Just to correct/clarify, guitars with Brazilian rosewood could be shipped outside of the USA if the paperwork was “in order”. By “in order” I mean that it is the certification and provenance of the original wood that is important here. A certificate for the finished guitar (which is all Gibson produces for a guitar like this) is not sufficient.
    I’m not suggesting at all that Gibson’s wood is not legally sourced - far from it. It’s just that the process of tracking and maintaining certification of a specific piece of wood through the manufacturing process of a huge company like Gibson is a huge hassle and would be time consuming and expensive to do. Gibson also know that they can easily sell as many Brazilian rosewood guitars as they can make within the USA, so there’s no driver for them to go to this trouble. Whilst as a British guitar nerd who would love a Brazilian rosewood board Les Paul I find this frustrating I also totally understand the logic behind Gibson’s decision 🤷🏼‍♂️
    To be fair PRS also make a similar business decision and make Brazilian rosewood guitars for USA sale only.
    Other smaller guitar makes/luthiers (e.g. Nik Huber) demonstrate that you CAN send guitars made with Brazilian rosewood around the world. For them maintaining certification of the wood through the manufacturing process is easier because of their much smaller production, and they also have an imperative to do so as being a German-based company they need to do so to be able to access the big market for those guitars in the USA.

    • @sunnohh
      @sunnohh 2 роки тому +2

      Spot on. It only costs about 80 bucks for a nice legally sourced plank of rosewood suitable for 2 or 3 fretboards. Its not insanely expensive, just expensive for wood.

    • @davidburke2132
      @davidburke2132 2 роки тому +1

      @@sunnohh to be fair Brazilian rosewood is a bit different to Indian rosewood (what most guitars are made out of these days). If someone is claiming to be selling Brazilian rosewood to you for as little as that I’d be immediately very suspicious: it’s either NOT Brazilian or not legally sourced.
      The problem with Brazilian rosewood (and to be clear I agree with it’s restricted status) is that you effectively can’t harvest it legally at all, and haven’t been able to do for a long time, so the only legal Brazilian rosewood to sell or use is old wood that predated the restrictions and that even more importantly you can prove was harvested before the restrictions.

    You should have played a Kinks riff in the playing demo, as Dave Davies’ use of an original V in the 60s is what turned a lot of us onto Flying Vs. Never owned one myself-they don’t hang right on me-but the design is cool. I bought my first Gibson, an SG Standard, in 1967, and then found out that they were bringing the Flying V back. After I got to try one of the new Vs in ‘68, I was really glad I had the SG instead! I still don’t like those ‘70s-style Vs much.

The pickguards on those explorers are different too. The 1990-present explorers are are way pointer than the either of the other two, and it’s pickguard is much smaller and pointed as well.

    Braz rosewood isn't that hard to get. I have a bunch. It is a pain to get the paperwork but there are lots of people that will ship internationally. I believe all the V's and Explorers were "made" in 58 - 59. The bodies and necks sat around for a few years and then Gibson blew them out the door in 63. They will have 63 parts on them. Just as easy to fake a 58 as it is to fake a 63. Similarly you could put 58 hardware on a 63 and have a 58. The serial numbers were all late 50s. Pickguards are 4 ply - W-B-W-B or B-W-B-W. If they were 3 ply they would be the same colour on the top and bottom. They were also only beveled to see the 3 laminates from the top.

    Something I love about Korina/Limba is that it doesn't get too "boomy" on the neck pickup when playing the lower frets. It still sounds tight.

      Of course. We all know the legendary Flying V tone comes from its fine selection of choice tone woods. 😂
      My neck pup has never been "boomy", and I have a mahogany V. It's all down to pups, amp, and in this case, mic type and placement. The wood has a negligible effect at best.

    Awesomeness!!! Just a note about the pick guard configuration.. On the original AMOS.. the pick guard was black and the input jack plate was white.. this was for the first 11/12 that left the factory in 58/59.. as mentioned from JB and Norms Rare Guitars.. along with pictures showing Amos Arther holding the 58’ V back in 58/59 in his music store.. I like this issue but like most it’s way out of my reach so I bought the Epi JB 58’ Amos Flying V.. and those are starting to disappear fast along with their shooting star prices!!

    Almost everytime I've seen a guitarist play a Flying V whether it be in a cover band or a famous band the guitarist wedges the lower tip between their wide spread legs almost using it as a weapon or an extension of their manhood. The last guitar I bought from guitar center was a really nice Epiphone Les Paul traditional pro IIIthat apparently was a demo model and amazingly had little wear considering. Only thing is it looked as if it hung around awhile since the strings had started to tarnish.

    No one does aging and simulated wear like the Gibson Custom shop. Tom Murphy is the professor of the relic job. Just from seeing it on video I can see it’s spectacular. And that’s where most fail. You want to give the appearance that you really tried to keep it perfect but little accidents and wear just accumulate over 50 years. That is exactly what this looks like. Taking a sander and going down to bare wood looks like you sanded it down to bare wood for some reason. Gibson does it so tastefully and subtly. Worth every penny

This is a vlog she posted of her trying out and eventually buying (for close on $10,000) a reissue Gibson Korina Flying V from the G-Club in Tokyo (with English subtitles). This lady is a complete guitar geek who uses anything up to six or seven guitars during a single two hour concert. She also owns a Les Paul, a a rare Gibson Futura and her own signature Dean Flying V.
