Diaphragm Breathing: What 9 Out Of 10 People Get Wrong

- Hi there, it’s Matt from VoiceHacker. We do voice coaching over Skype. Today, we’re talking about breathing. How most people get it wrong, and about one little secret I couldn’t find anywhere else on UA-cam. Let’s get into it.
Breathing is important. We live in a rather stressful time. And, as Stacey Schuerman says, you’ve got a tool to help you out. Breathing can help to manage feelings of anxiety and stress. Even Sesame street knows it.
I’ve been teaching for 5 years, and I don’t think I’ve gone a day without talking about breathing. But why is it so important?
You might have heard of the ‘fight or flight’ mechanism. It’s the “oh my god there’s a tiger in that bush” thing. It’s a good thing, sometimes, when you need to run away from tigers.
But other stressful situations can put you in that mode. So your body needs to chill out - and it uses the ‘rest and digest’ mode to do it.
Rest and digest lets us unwind - to stop seeing tigers around every *AH!*. And you can unwind using breathing. But why does just ‘breathing’ work?
Well, it’s thanks to the vagus nerve. No, not the ‘vegas’ nerve. The ‘vagus’ - Anyway, it’s the wandering nerve.
And it means that when your brain receives bad signals from the belly, it starts hitting fight or flight. So when you’re breathing anxiously…
So that means there’s a good way to breathe, and a bad way to breathe. The bad way uses the neck and shoulders.
And breathing in this bad way is very common. In fact, if I was to ask you to breathe in. Right now. A bit more. A bit more!!
And relax. Your shoulders probably went upwards when you breathed in, and then dropped. In other words, you breathed wrong.
So how do we breathe ‘right’? Well, we need to breathe with the diaphragm. When we breathe in, it’s supposed to go down.
The biggest part of our lungs are at the bottom, so we need to drop the diaphragm to inflate them. But there’s a problem - all your organs and viscera are in the way. They’re just below the diaphragm, stopping it from dropping. So we need to get them out of the way for a sec. That means as we breathe in, we need to inflate the belly.
Inflating the belly shifts the organs, and gives the diaphragm space to drop. This is singing teacher Eric Arceneaux doing it. Notice his shoulders are dead still. 5 stars. Breathe in, belly out. Breathe out, belly in. Simple.
But I’ve got one little secret that totally changed the way I taught people how to breathe.
Most teachers teach breathing like this: you breathe in first, And then you exhale. With lots of counting. Voice teachers like counting.
But the trouble is, if you tell someone to just ‘breathe in’, they’ll breathe into their chest. Look at these poor Sesame street kids. Some producer has asked them to breathe in, and they did it the only way they knew how. This happens all the time, as Belisa Vranich says:
Remember how I got you to breathe badly, just before? All I asked you to do was to breathe in! Your bad habits are so ingrained that any time I get you to breathe in, you breathe in badly!
The secret is to do the opposite. Breathe. Out. First.
And remember: next time you feel stressed, or anxious, or need to take a deep breath:
Breathe. Out. First.
Thanks for watching.

After watching 6 videos on Diagrammatic breathing, I whined: "I still don't get it." I thought: "OK, just one more." And it was yours. THANK YOU and the two vocal teachers (Janice and Charlotte) for the breathe out first trick. Worked for me.
I second this.
I felt like this as well, i was like, how am i supposed to do it?, i've watched all of these videos but still don't understand the point? but this video just clears everything
Yes! Same! I practiced for 3 days straight and finally have the mind muscle connection. Didn’t know breathing was so difficult 😂
@@femkesliep9079 hahaha. I know exactly what you mean! I would hear often, (being a singer) "Breathe from your diaphragm" but didn't quite get the knack. Well, at least I know how to do it now. But it is still a bit odd as it seems more natural for the chest to expand rather than the belly. Although, being conscious of diaphragmatic breathing now, it certainly has pointed out to me just how much of a shallow of a breather I have been so, that's good. Plus, I can really "belt" out a tune better now. heh heh.
How did I get to be 68 years old by breathing wrong. Seriously, very well presented, I've been walking around practicing this since I watched, and catching my self using the chest every time until I correct. One step before breathing however, is to remember to actually breath. When I get into a stressful situation, I tend to stop breathing, which causes other problems of course..
@@juanitadoe4057 lol what
The jumpscare at the end was like a baptism to practicing correct breathing😂 thank you for this video!
I've been working on all these things with my high school choirs. During this time of virtual learning, this video is AMAZING for my classes. Thank you!
I literally yelled "STOP" and burst into laughter at that last tiger clip. Also thank you for this!!! It'll be hugely beneficial both for voice acting AND for reducing my anxiety 😮💨
I usually don’t comment on videos, but this video was extremely helpful in my singing technique, thanks!!
I’ve been working on breathing techniques for running and couldn’t figure out how to activate my diaphragm but this helped so much
You deftly explained that at the end. Many might not stick around to learn that. I like the jump scare you put at the end to demonstrate it’s effectiveness.
The simple tricks are the brilliant ones. Thanks!
The Quality of this video... Everything's in here. Informative, interesting, efficient, straight to the point AND funny. (Edit: Also, (surprisingly?) soothing) I've been watching tons of videos, this has been the most helpful I've found. Thank you SO much !
It's a shame that it's incorrect and wrong.
You're a legend. You're a good DJ. (Not your original work but gave us the gold)
I just came back from a breathwork workshop and I couldn't get this belly breathing and all it took is watch your video for free and that's it. I get it now 😄🙏 Thank you so much.
I FUCKING LOVE THIS WHOLE VIDEO: 1) its funny 2) its correct 3) it addresses the problem with breathing 4) it solves the problem 5) it makes fun of the people who pay to get on a ted stage 7) its a PERFECT CUE (exhale and recoil)
Number 2) No, it's not "correct" at all, sorry
This might be the first and last video I am seeing from this channel but the only thing I can say, Awesome, thank you
Awesome for being anatomically and functionally wrong!
Great Video, Giant compilation and research, deserves more views.
THIS IS THE ONE. Dude is changing lives
Why is this video so good?
Why are you so good?
AFter showing the breathing technique and asking feel relaxed and I was like yeah and then the clip of the tiger. Ahh, you sadistic genius. This was so good!!!
This is actually insanely smart. You should ideally take a deeper breathe than recoil allows but still this is a nest trick for beginners for sure. Awesome video
3:20 When you started talking like that i thought you were going to try to sell me some expensive 3 month breathing program.
Loved your sense of humor!
Great video.
thank you - great teaching and GREAT humor!
*** HIGHLY RECOMMEND! ***
I scrolled through looking for “You’re breathing wrong” videos… and weirdly they were all longer than an hour! 😳
I watched a few of them, but came away even more confused.
Then I found THIS video, and it solved everything in five minutes!
*** HIGHLY RECOMMEND! ***
The jumpscare was so good 🤣🤣 what a great match for videos like this where people try to feel calm
Thanks Matt, great video!!
I find this very helpful. Thanks!
Wow! This technique is much better than the usual which is wrong. It's something that you reverse the way you breathe. You exhale the air that you breath while stomach in and vice versa, inhale the air while stomach out.👌 And the feeling was so good. Gonna use this daily. Good for meditation, a new habit. ❤️ Thanks for sharing.
Epic!!!!!!!! it’s so interesting because that is what I figured out without even knowing it. Now I’m watching this video you created, and everything is coming full circle for us. I always teach people to breathe out first, because it squeezes all the air out of the lungs, and then the lungs have a natural inhalation that happens that is deep and reflexive … aka natural to the fundamental mechanics of the breath in action.. just wanted to say Great work!!🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

Wow what a video, made it feel so much more rhythmic
Thank You. This complements Kriya Yoga and Hong-saw meditation quite nicely.
Excellent, thanks a lot for giving such simple tips to this tricky topic! I've been trying to breathe properly for singing for a long time and always wondered whether I was doing my breathing exercises properly but could never tell for sure when not being in front of the teacher. They kept telling me I'd catch the trick later by daily practice. This video certainly clarifies the idea.
I'll try it myself right away having the words "breath out first" and "relax" in mind... xD
By the way, is it normal to experience the feeling of not having more room for air just after the expanding of rib cage and when belly starts to inflate?
Awesome tip. Never heard that before. Thanks
Excellent presentation. The tiger attack made it special. Thanks soooo much!
wonderful program, really a voice hacker!
Excellent video, thank you so much!
Ur contribution as you put it...... is very helpful n true. Thank you
It seems over here in the West we just keep preaching, "Tension! Tension! Tension!" to the point that even "belly breathing" videos still instruct you to look the part by forcing the belly out...
Love it Matt, thank you! Dr. Belisa
So easy and simply shown but nice compared to how we got this wrong to begin with.
Love this one!
really helpful thanks, Matt x
Brilliant, I love this tip. thank you
This is so entertaining 🤣🤩 I'm dying because I laugh myself out of breath 🤣 great tips!👏😁
Your voice is perfect...
This is the best I have seen to date!!
It's still wrong. Ignorance of anatomy is shocking!
@@mozartsbumbumsrus7750 Why not enlighten us? You did respond to a 5 year old comment. What qualification do you have to make such a rude statement?
@@cstraley The Truth may be taken as "rude", but it's still the truth. My qualifications? I've been a professional serious high art musician wind player teaching for very many years. I still study anatomy and have written about the anatomy of breathing. My colleagues and every musical tutor all get the diaphragm utterly wrong. It's hilariously funny. Being lazy promotes ignorance
@@mozartsbumbumsrus7750 You haven't spoken any truth... You do appear to think very highly of yourself with "in reality" no real qualification to make the statements you are making. "professional serious high art musician wind player" If you don't like the video complain to the author, not me. 5 years ago I thought it was good but I don't remember watching it.
Great video
Great video. Thanks.
THIS IS SO TRUE!
Like your presentation and voice
Thanks ‘
Awesome .. keep going
this is just mind blowing!!!!!!
genious
really, its good!
thanks

Breathe out. Then relax. Wow, thank you for this.
How can u breath out when you haven't breath in?
@@TuanLe-bp1yb there is always some air in the lungs. Force it out like you are blowing a balloon then 3-5 seconds of wait and then just relax and the lungs will fill up with air
That's also how normal breathing happens.
@@TuanLe-bp1yb Gradual depletion of air and then a steady inhale due to pressure difference.
@Manas Sharma sadly, reserve air (1.5 liters) never leaves the lungs. It's physically impossible to expell ANY reserve volume air. It's such a blind spot in everyone's brains.
@@mozartsbumbumsrus7750 Yes I agree. I am talking about the shallow breathers that have more air than the 1.5 litres you mentioned. Let's be honest how many people can even fully exhale - rib flares, muscle tightnesses, change in volume of different parts of the mediastinum
Hello, this video was a great help. I enjoy watching your videos, but this is my favourite video so far. I've been breathing wrong for most of my life, but there's another issue I would love to fix & that is how would I fix a monotone voice. I am very prone to sounding monotone. Even when I AM making an effort & THINK I'm being expressive. I get people asking me why I talk like a robot & when I consciously TRY to sound expressive when I speak, it sounds inauthentic & somehow amateur!! And I get told I sound false. Are there any good strategies that may help me to get rid of monotone voice without sounding false? I would be very greatful if you could post a video about it.
That's awesome, thank you!

Me after a long search about "breathing" for many years
Then I found this video said "breathe out first" represent the 6 minutes video 😃😃
BTW thank you
Awesome video!
Great video!!!
Brilliant!
This is helpful for relaxation, but for singing expansion of the rib cage, including the back ribs is important to get full expansion and support.
Brilliant! Love it!
Awesome editing
Like this, different way of looking at it.
That is soper thank you. What go rong with the diafragma in grownups wen they have to go for a operation
Amazing!
Greatest video
Amazing tip, I constantly was breathing out first and wondered why I cant get so much air in.
Great Tip!!!
You mean breathing in first?
Lol
You need to watch the video again
how do you breath out first??

You saved my life bro
Haha awesome Matt! Cheers mate.
Instant effect love bro
Diaphragmatic breathing is a real thing. It really helps the relief of my GERD
I love your videos
I reckon I started chest breathing when I got a fat stomach and kept trying to hold it in all the time 😳, I need to just let it be what it is so I can breath right again
Amazing
Thank you
wonderful!
But whenever I try to breath normally I always have to breath as much as I can because it’s not enough oxygen and it just started today for me. And I’ve been relaxed this whole day and I still breathe from my chest
The end of this video is very helpful, thanks. But the tiger part is disturbing.
Very good.
Good Suggestion. Only issue with video is that tigre Roar, my dog started barking and went out in flight and fight mode searching for tiger.
WOW I FELT THE DIFFERENCE IMMEDIATELY!
You’re great 👍
Bravo 👏
Thank you.
amazing
That guy attacked by a tiger is either seriously injured or died. Hopefully he's ok.
When running it's easy to compensate with tiredness when you belly breathe.
well the Tiger did not have to go hungry that day! 🤣
Thats amazing
Awsome!
Ohh. I've been taught to diagram-breathing for many years, but most of the time (except when i do nothing) it seems to be that is not real deep breath at all because i put a little force on belly about pushing it out (i'm sorry i don't know how to describe that feeling correctly).
Until i watch this video right now, LoL...
Hey bro, my congratulations! I reached the same conclusion alone. Of course it was not that clear. By the way, this is good for the kind of people, like me, that are too charged! Bye and thanks
Also a good tip I think helps me is first thing I do first is start pushing my stomach out first before the breath to get my attention already on that part of the body
7GnoSiS Spiritual 7 Klue 7 g
I was told this by one of my yoga teachers, she said "breathe out and breathing in will happen by itself".
....yes but that's only a part of the story and not entirely correct. They teach you that because it makes it easier but proper inhalation does not necessarily happen by itself. Yes, some inhalation will naturally take place but you can't simply go around all day 'breathing out' and relying on the reaction to that to get air into the lungs. People can't breathe correctly, I've never met a single person who can and I've been teaching it for 25 years. People must retrain their breathing habits which for most people is a very difficult thing to do.
@@cspace1234nzcan we talk
First thing you learn in ANY martial arts is breathing. Without it , it’s impossible to achieve
Simple: touch right under your ribs, two inches to the side of your floating ribs (toward the waist line). Keep touching right under the ribs. Now YAWN. Where does the air go? Imagine an accordion pulling the air down FOR YOU; collecting it in a sideways fashion. Keep the jaw and tongue completely relaxed before you start your breath (always)! Now start the slow sideways draw of air.
There is a bodybuilding workout called Vacuum which is about strength ing the deaphragma
Much more strengthen the TVA while relaxing the deaphragm
Cool tip
Nice video.
How come NBA players, NFL players, soccer players, professional fighters, gymnasts, etc., are getting by without discernible belly movement?
Is it better to breathe in through the nose and exhale through the nose ? I was told it was healthier for the body is this true? …
5:42 thankyou
God damn so wonderful
