Diaphragm Breathing: What 9 Out Of 10 People Get Wrong

  • Hi there, it’s Matt from VoiceHacker. We do voice coaching over Skype. Today, we’re talking about breathing. How most people get it wrong, and about one little secret I couldn’t find anywhere else on UA-cam. Let’s get into it.
Breathing is important. We live in a rather stressful time. And, as Stacey Schuerman says, you’ve got a tool to help you out. Breathing can help to manage feelings of anxiety and stress. Even Sesame street knows it.
I’ve been teaching for 5 years, and I don’t think I’ve gone a day without talking about breathing. But why is it so important?
You might have heard of the ‘fight or flight’ mechanism. It’s the “oh my god there’s a tiger in that bush” thing. It’s a good thing, sometimes, when you need to run away from tigers.
But other stressful situations can put you in that mode. So your body needs to chill out - and it uses the ‘rest and digest’ mode to do it.
Rest and digest lets us unwind - to stop seeing tigers around every *AH!*. And you can unwind using breathing. But why does just ‘breathing’ work?
Well, it’s thanks to the vagus nerve. No, not the ‘vegas’ nerve. The ‘vagus’ - Anyway, it’s the wandering nerve.
And it means that when your brain receives bad signals from the belly, it starts hitting fight or flight. So when you’re breathing anxiously…
So that means there’s a good way to breathe, and a bad way to breathe. The bad way uses the neck and shoulders.
And breathing in this bad way is very common. In fact, if I was to ask you to breathe in. Right now. A bit more. A bit more!!
And relax. Your shoulders probably went upwards when you breathed in, and then dropped. In other words, you breathed wrong.
So how do we breathe ‘right’? Well, we need to breathe with the diaphragm. When we breathe in, it’s supposed to go down.
The biggest part of our lungs are at the bottom, so we need to drop the diaphragm to inflate them. But there’s a problem - all your organs and viscera are in the way. They’re just below the diaphragm, stopping it from dropping. So we need to get them out of the way for a sec. That means as we breathe in, we need to inflate the belly.
Inflating the belly shifts the organs, and gives the diaphragm space to drop. This is singing teacher Eric Arceneaux doing it. Notice his shoulders are dead still. 5 stars. Breathe in, belly out. Breathe out, belly in. Simple.
But I’ve got one little secret that totally changed the way I taught people how to breathe.
Most teachers teach breathing like this: you breathe in first, And then you exhale. With lots of counting. Voice teachers like counting.
But the trouble is, if you tell someone to just ‘breathe in’, they’ll breathe into their chest. Look at these poor Sesame street kids. Some producer has asked them to breathe in, and they did it the only way they knew how. This happens all the time, as Belisa Vranich says:
Remember how I got you to breathe badly, just before? All I asked you to do was to breathe in! Your bad habits are so ingrained that any time I get you to breathe in, you breathe in badly!
The secret is to do the opposite. Breathe. Out. First.
And remember: next time you feel stressed, or anxious, or need to take a deep breath:
    Breathe. Out. First.
    Thanks for watching.

After watching 6 videos on Diagrammatic breathing, I whined: "I still don't get it." I thought: "OK, just one more." And it was yours. THANK YOU and the two vocal teachers (Janice and Charlotte) for the breathe out first trick. Worked for me.

@@femkesliep9079 hahaha. I know exactly what you mean! I would hear often, (being a singer) "Breathe from your diaphragm" but didn't quite get the knack. Well, at least I know how to do it now. But it is still a bit odd as it seems more natural for the chest to expand rather than the belly. Although, being conscious of diaphragmatic breathing now, it certainly has pointed out to me just how much of a shallow of a breather I have been so, that's good. Plus, I can really "belt" out a tune better now. heh heh.

How did I get to be 68 years old by breathing wrong. Seriously, very well presented, I've been walking around practicing this since I watched, and catching my self using the chest every time until I correct. One step before breathing however, is to remember to actually breath. When I get into a stressful situation, I tend to stop breathing, which causes other problems of course..

Wow! This technique is much better than the usual which is wrong. It's something that you reverse the way you breathe. You exhale the air that you breath while stomach in and vice versa, inhale the air while stomach out.👌 And the feeling was so good. Gonna use this daily. Good for meditation, a new habit. ❤️ Thanks for sharing.

Epic!!!!!!!! it’s so interesting because that is what I figured out without even knowing it. Now I’m watching this video you created, and everything is coming full circle for us. I always teach people to breathe out first, because it squeezes all the air out of the lungs, and then the lungs have a natural inhalation that happens that is deep and reflexive … aka natural to the fundamental mechanics of the breath in action.. just wanted to say Great work!!🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

Excellent, thanks a lot for giving such simple tips to this tricky topic! I've been trying to breathe properly for singing for a long time and always wondered whether I was doing my breathing exercises properly but could never tell for sure when not being in front of the teacher. They kept telling me I'd catch the trick later by daily practice. This video certainly clarifies the idea.
I'll try it myself right away having the words "breath out first" and "relax" in mind... xD
By the way, is it normal to experience the feeling of not having more room for air just after the expanding of rib cage and when belly starts to inflate?

I've been breathing wrong for most of my life, but there's another issue I would love to fix & that is how would I fix a monotone voice. I am very prone to sounding monotone. Even when I AM making an effort & THINK I'm being expressive. I get people asking me why I talk like a robot & when I consciously TRY to sound expressive when I speak, it sounds inauthentic & somehow amateur!! And I get told I sound false. Are there any good strategies that may help me to get rid of monotone voice without sounding false? I would be very greatful if you could post a video about it.

....yes but that's only a part of the story and not entirely correct. They teach you that because it makes it easier but proper inhalation does not necessarily happen by itself. Yes, some inhalation will naturally take place but you can't simply go around all day 'breathing out' and relying on the reaction to that to get air into the lungs. People can't breathe correctly, I've never met a single person who can and I've been teaching it for 25 years. People must retrain their breathing habits which for most people is a very difficult thing to do.

Simple: touch right under your ribs, two inches to the side of your floating ribs (toward the waist line). Keep touching right under the ribs. Now YAWN. Where does the air go? Imagine an accordion pulling the air down FOR YOU; collecting it in a sideways fashion. Keep the jaw and tongue completely relaxed before you start your breath (always)! Now start the slow sideways draw of air.
