Should have used Ethernet connection to more accurately show load times. Too many factors with Wi-Fi connection to ensure each device is getting same speed, especially when used at same time. Good explanation of hardware differences though.
just bought the ultra with jbl buds for $49.95 direct from roku . 50% off sale and it’s the 2019 model . not the LT model from wal mart . upgraded from the roku 3 . sling works fantastic and i’m on wi fi not cable connected . 150 mbs speed.
I took advantage of the sale too. $49.99 at Best Buy. Upgraded from a Premiere+.
The thing I hate about the Roku remote is that it is always on, and goes through batteries like they were nothing. The only way to turn it off is to take the batteries out, which of course means that you'd have to re-train when you want to use it. I now use the Roku app on my smartphone and haven't used the Roku remote in months.
I have 3 different Rokus and even recently tossed out an older model I had in a drawer, none of my remotes have ever had battery issues, so much so I would be hard pressed to remember when any of them needed new batteries.
Never had battery issues with my Roku remote.

But the problem with the Roku remote is that, unlike TV remotes, it broadcasts a 'blip' signal every thirty seconds or so to communicate with the network/Roku unit, which means that it's burning through a set of batteries in about thirty days. The TV remote only sends a signal when you press a button. Therein lies the problem.
A true test should had been using Ethernet on both. Unless they were both connected to different AP, it could go either way cus one is gonna get a response before the other
Just a suggestion.. put a small post-it or something on the device so we can easily know which model you are talking about the entire time.
I assume you tested both devices over the same wireless access point at the same time. The newer Roku devices use SU-MIMO, not MU-MIMO (Single User vs Multiple User). The inconsistency in speed test results may be a result of which device accessed the access point first in each test, thus gaining a brief temporary exclusive priority to the router's bandwidth.
What I learned from this video is that Sling is garbage
And always will be.

I got my Roku ultra from best buy 2 months ago. They sent me
the 2018 version. I have a 1080p Tv and my max DSL stream with ATT is 3.5mbs.
This unit works fantastic so I cut Direct tv.

I like the programmable buttons on the remote. The fast launch feature is nice, and certainly reflects improved hardware, but I'm more interested in new features over a slight hardware improvement. For example, does the the 9.2 OS update support more video codecs than the 9.1 for streaming local content from a DNLA server on Roku media player? Along those same lines, do you speculate that new features will be added to the 2019 that will not be be available on the 2018 and earlier versions due to hardware limitations? Is the MicroSD max capacity and speed the same on both units, or will we be able to use larger, faster memory cards now?
And finally, will you be reviewing the Roku Ultra LT when it becomes available?

These remotes need a fly wheel to quickly scroll.
You can scroll just as fast with the arrow buttons
Arrow keys work just as well. And not to mention, another moving part to break
First thing I did was turn off the clicking sound on the remote on my Ultra 2019

No DTS-X or Auro3d support. No Dolby Vision or HDR10+ support. Pay the stupid licensing fees and charge $10 more for the Ultra model. Home theather guys want this and dont want to buy the AppleTV
Hardly seems worth upgrading if you have the 2018 model but if you don't then the improvements to the newer remote are welcome.
They should make the A B buttons customizable quick launch buttons
How is battery life on the new Roku remote? I swapped to aftermarket universal remotes because i kept burning thru AAA batteries.
Which Roku do you have with that issue? I have the Roku 4 streaming player and the remote did kill my batteries faster. I looked on Roku.com and found an upgraded compatible remote with the power button and I've been good to go every since. I did this recently.
I finally got rechargeable batteries to stop bleeding money on that issue.

2019 is clearly faster for launching which is where the processor would really come into play. Looking at how quickly a stream starts is more about how fast the feed is than the processing power which is why you don't see as big of a difference. Also, it doesn't appear you tested any 4k where the processor should come into even more play in starting a feed.

Shouldn't be much if any if you have a fast wifi that isn't being taxed. Ethernet really just brings you consistency. Not going to have weird issues if someone in your house is taxing the wifi, they turn on the microwave, your neighbor's wifi is interfering, etc.
I recently upgraded my Premiere+ to the 2019 Ultra because of a Black Friday sale at Best Buy ($49.99). Honestly, I don't really see much of a speed difference in real world usage. I was happily surprised by the quality of the included headphones though. They sound much better than my cheap Sony earbuds. And I appreciate the remote finder button, because the main reason I wanted to upgrade was because we lost the Premiere+ remote, and Roku charges $30 for a replacement.
Do your batteries drain a lot faster when you use the earbuds? I would need to replace the batteries every 2 weeks.

Any pairing remote should technically work. They have the button inside of the battery compartment. I can pair any ultra remote with any premiere plus, and the enhanced TV remote works with TVs purchased from Best Buy which come with the crappy one.
Thing you must keep in mind is the specs are everything. Just because the difference seems minor in the testing doesn't mean whole lot. The processor is 17 percent faster but the instruction sets the newer processor has will help it execute better overall and handle the grunt work of huge video files. The ram is double in the 2019 which is why I'm coming after this model as it gives room to the processor to work far more efficiently, especially with bigger harder to load apps. Lastly the newer model due to the faster processor and double the ram can multitask and handle more instructions simultaneously. This means switching between apps will be faster and more fluid even under heavy loads. The 2019 due to the faster processor and mainly for the double in ram will make the 2019 a far better choice. Also when it comes to loading apps the server your connecting to also makes a huge difference. Just because your side is super fast doesn't mean the server your connecting to isn't burdened meaning Netflix, Amazon, UA-cam ect.
So I been looking everywhere to learn how much RAM in the Ultra...2Gigs?
@@robinbarto4627 yes it is 2 gigs but the processor os a bit weak at 2Ghz per core the average heat is around 70c. The Nvidia shield tv is over 5 times more powerful and doesn't get over 55c when fully maxed out.
Wish there was a comparison of processing UHD content. Everything else was cool. I'm old school so I will get a kick outta the old games. 2018 model for me.
Ordered the 2019 ultra via @Amazon 2 weeks ago with estimated ship date on 10/11. I was supposed to get it delivered on 10/15. Very disappointed to learn that @Amazon changed the ship date. Won’t get it for another 2 weeks - 10/29.

I have a question. I'm having a problem with my roku ultra streaming on demand videos on youtube tv. Occasionally the video locks up with black screen and I have to reload youtube tv . I am having a problem contacting youtube tv. I t seems the problem is a roku problem because we can stram youtube tv on our computer and cell phones without any problems.
I use the Amazon button on my older model's remote all the time. I don't use any of the others, including the odd choices on the new remotes. I guess a lot of people get suckered into those high-dollar services instead.

What is the model number of the 2019 model and the 2018 model?
Its my understanding the boxes look the same, with the only difference being the model number, and that on black friday they will both be out together so they can clear out last years inventory. :)
2018 is 4661R and the 2019 is 4670R.

Is there a difference in the app ecosystems between the 2018 model and the 2019 model? I wonder if HBO Max will eventually be added to the 2019 model once HBO makes the hand shake?
He says that menu volumes differ but doesn't mention that they're on the same loudness setting so he mustn't know that they're configurable.
I see what seems like network issues in his tests but he's using wifi instead of the ethernet ports.
9.2's already on my 2017 sticks so he's wrong that it won't come to the older Ultra.
He's also wrong about the pinning. You've always been able to pin a channel anywhere. Those 2 empty squares are probably for future use or they'll always stay empty.
Does the channel live preview work in UA-cam TV on the live guide in the 2019 model?
streaming speed test really isn't a good indicator of better performance, especially with wifi. Keep in mind even the crappest Roku that supports full HD are required a minimum of bandwidth to prevent buffering. That pretty much means between 5-25Mbps (according to Netflix). Better processors and ram will improve the UI most of all. Perhaps when service providers begin to offer apps (channels) that take advantage of the greater processing power you would see improvements. But I don't think they will roll those out too soon until they know enough users have the newer Roku boxes with improvements before they make software changes. Otherwise, they would be shooting themselves in the foot.
I assume this box takes the place of a DVR or using a converter box and an antenna? I'm wondering if it can be programmed to record local TV? Have the converter box and the antenna never set it up because DirecTV was only charging me 18.99 for years but it now wants to charge for the receiver! Guess I'll have to return the Roku streaming stick+and get the one with the box! I see roku offers alot of rentals but I would only use it for sling TV other wise it kinda defeats the purpose of cutting the cord

Exactly. I still have three 1st gen Rokus. All work great. I can live with a few secs of lag. No big deal.
It took them an eternity to add user-definable buttons. But just two? With today's large variety of app and services, they should have added two rows of three buttons (6 buttons) . Two wouldn't be enough for a live tv service and about 3-4 on-demand services. Better yet, make partnerships with universal remote makers so they can do it for them.

Good video Luke. My streaming stick is crashing all the time with Sling Tv. Don’t know if this is common or not. Been through many iterations of it though.
Probably the Sling app at fault. It used to turn my smart tv off at random moments, switched to hulu live and it doesn't happen anymore.
Shouldn’t the speed test be done one roku at a time for accuracy? If you do the test both sharing the same internet connection at the same time one or the other device will take priority and use more internet bandwidth than the other device giving you an inaccurate speed test. I always see people do similar tests and I always think they are doing it wrong. Maybe I’m wrong i dont know.
What about the ability to PLAY/PASS Dolby ATMOS audio on Netflix? This is crazy! Check it out: With my 2018 Roku Ultra, I can decode Dolby Atmos audio from Amazon Prime (Jack Ryan is their only Atmos content) on my receiver. And it's amazing! HOWEVER, the top tier subscription of Netflix (which offers many Dolby Atmos titles) does not PLAY/PASS DOLBY ATMOS audio on the 2018 Roku Ultra. Has this been resolved on the 2019 Ultra? Is this a licensing payment issue? It seems my only other way to get Atmos audio from Netflix, is to replace the Ultra with an Apple TV box? Can anybody clarify this?
I would much rather have them move the volume and mute buttons on to the top of the remote instead of the side. I don't need a programmable button for voice.

2019 is a must have for the texture difference on the top. Spent enough time on it.
Still no reason to upgraded from my Roku 4 streaming player. Not much has changed to justify it. I did upgraded my remote to a compatible one drains the batteries way less faster.

That is where they messed up! I am sure it has to do with licenses since you can get ROKU built in to the TV with DV.

One of the best things about Roku is the simple interface.I hope they don't see fit to ever change it too much.The need for speed is way over the top these days.I remember when there were just 3 channels available in b/w and you had to get up out the chair to turn over tv channels.
Slightly faster load time than my Roku1, but not worth upgrading. Roku really needs to work on it's firmware!

Does the volume and mute work through the "ARC" connection?
It uses IR or ARC as my 2017 model can connect to an Onkyo AVR. My other TV with a 2016 Ultra uses IR as it has a menu where you can set it up.
Can you set a 30 sec. skip forward on the Ultra or Ultra LT?

My remote can control my AV volume -- on my receiver via HDMI CEC. You have to set this up via "System->Control Other Devices" Menu on the Roku.

You didn't play any 4k content which is where the difference would really show. You didn't stream anything from plex (especially in 4K) which is where the difference would show. This is a completely useless test.

@@jayw654 Thank you very much...I am also concerned about the overheating that many people report. I have been considering getting a different android based product like an Android 9.0 TV Box one I found is the Pendoo TX6 Android TV Box 4GB DDR3 32GB. There are so many options it gets confusing...
@@robinbarto4627 I would stick to the Nvidia shield tv as its an official Android product with updates. While 32gb sounds nice it isn't nearly enough storage. Also the processor means more and the Nvidia shield can be expanded with terabytes of storage if needed. Nvidia makes some of the most powerful APU's known to man. APU (processor with graphics combined). Lastly while the Pendoo may have an extra gig of ram it really isn't a huge benefit. I too often think the more ram the better and that is typically true but as stated more is to be considered than just ram.
Also Nvidia is guaranteed with updates for life, at least a good 7+ years. Always to stay within the official product line for better support. Nvidia shield is the most powerful streamer, period. The only thing that can beat the Nvidia Shield TV is a straight up PC being ran as a media center.
Yeah today I'm going to dump $600+ and upgrade all of Roku Ultras .. NOT! Also mine are faster, everything is Ethernet and not WiFi. Although I'm kinda PO'ed my Ultras don't have a friggin Mute button .. I just got in the habit of hitting Pause. No if I'm going to replace my Ultras it's going to be with Apple 4K TVs. There is no comparison in performance, it's not even a fair comparison.
Good luck with that absolute crap Apple remote. I need to use it more and might change my mind, but just messing with the display was terrible.
@@pietossing .. Our Roku's remotes aren't fault free. I learned a trick on the Apple remotes, pretend they're a D-PAD and click (top/bottom, right/left)...

I have lost all respect for this reviewer. A good reviewer would have known that there is a setting to control the volume of the menus in 'Settings'. He would have known that the best way to test device speed is with an Ethernet cable not Wi-fi. He would know that not all devices have the comment section below the video, mine are on the right hand side of the video. And he would not keep pointing down each time he side "down in the comment section" as if we do not all know where 'down' is!
