Went over to our local Walmart (Warrenton OR) and found the Express+ to be closed out.The price I paid for a spare was $21. Not bad. I have a back up. Don't know if this is Nationwide or not. But $21 is a great price for an HD unit.
I purchased the 2018 express for my HD TV in my den for my grandchildren to watch. It works just fine for this. No problems or issues since install. I hooked it to the same WIFI network as my other ROKUs and it picked up all my channels.

No, it's a case by case basis. Netflix, Prime, Hulu, and many others are subscription based. Crackle, Pluto, Roku channel are good examples of free options there are others, but aren't as popular. The main difference is portability from the TV to the box. If you have non-smart TV's or travel a lot dealing with non-smart TVs, the Roku sticks, or boxes are preferable. If you're set with the one Roku TV there's no need for the portable ones, in addition I find the Roku TV's switch more smoothly between live and streamed TV.
I think every Roku gets a bit hot. For the Roku Express I recommend connecting the USB power to the tv that way the Roku turns off when you turn off your tv letting it cool off while not in use. And I recommend putting a small fan next to the Roku receiver.
Roku have been overheating since the first Roku 2, I have one that is unusable due to overheating and I even have the case open with a raspberry pi heatsink attached.
@@timmturner I don't know why they don't put vents on Roku devices. For now a small cpu fan keeps my Roku at around 80°c without the fan it reaches in the mid 90°c
I personally haven't had any of my Roku devices overheat since my old Roku 3. I have had them get uncomfortably hot though and I really think Roku should be addressing this. if this new express drawing less power solves that then great. I suspect that it drawing less power and being in a smaller package however will just serve to make it continue to get as hot as the older larger versions.
Is your router the old "N/G" 2.5 GHz network? If so you gain no speed in streaming because your router does not support new 5GHz wifi streaming technology. Just buy 2018 model unless updating modem and router to 5GHz or you already have. If you have 5GHz and 100+kbps speed from provider buying 2018 makes no sense because that 2018 only accesses about 50 kbps of it.

You cannot turn the tv on and off with the roku remote. You have to use the TV's remote or power button to turn the tv on or off.

Mine gets hot too. My 2017 Roku Streaming Stick gets hot too it over heated before. It said it on my tv screen.
