- When you don't have a drill press, but need to drill holes that are of the quality of a drill press, a portable drill guide could be your answer. There are many uses for the portable drill guide, and in this video I'll be demonstrating one way to use it.

Loads of videos on you Tube about the Drill Guide and the Main Complaint is they Topple over if put at an Angle at 45° + and when using Forstner Bits &Big Drill Bits.
And here is the Solution that Solves all those problems Simple but effective.

This drill guide does not drill straight. Any downward force or pressure tilts the guide and bit out of square. You can see this effect even before you begin drilling.

The issue he's describing is different then the one shown in the video. Even with the base screwed down, the part you attach to the drill gets out of alignment quite easilly when you apply downward force. Seemingly in part because it only has the spring on one side, possible also because of a loose fit around the posts.
Sorry. But if it needs corrected right out of box, I will not be interested. I rather pay more for quality.
I agree this tool is great but in my experience it is not intended to be used with bigger drills that are not battery powered. I use it to drill perpendicular/ straight holes into the wood floors of old trailers at work. I took the bottom red stoppers off of it, as well as the guide spring. It is a bit wobbly flimsy but not a bad tool for $35. seeking solutions.

did it come with the chuck? does the chuck and hex shank need to b installed on the "portalign" brand?
Sorry, don't know anything about the Portalign brand... this one came as all one piece.
is it possible to set a custom angle? or can you only set 90,75,60,45?
Is this something I can use to drill into something like a metal pipe?
Finding this video was a case of perfect timing! I just got that drill guide on Black Friday. I’m going to use it to make an angled mortise in a Christmas gift for my daughter. The base and cleat will help me get it perfectly aligned.

Can the chuck be replaced with a higher quality unit with less runout? Or is there wobble from the way the chuck is mounted?
It's the unit... you would need to buy a more expensive unit.
After watching your review, a few on the Rockler version and the expensive woodpecker version I feel pretty confident that I should just pay the money for the woodpecker.
If you are using it a lot, I would definitely go with the woodpecker.

But. Planning to use it for my outdoor builds as well.
Base plate is ultimately required, too.

I personally can't afford a drill press, this is the next best thing. You had a more precise project going, but I have some easier projects. Just got one today & looking forward to trying it out. Couldn't figure out the directions for assembly, so I just UA-camd it. Thanks!

@@TrainingHandsAcademy It's a brute. 1957 Chevrolet 6400 series. 2 ton flat bed with a 11' 5" long X 7' 5" wide bed. That's where I will be doing all the drilling and I need all to be inline both front to back and left to right. It's going to be fun.

@@ScytheNoire Thanks. Since asking that question, I've discovered that all similar portable drill guides are made in China except for the Rockler one. It's a bit more expensive-but also more rugged and a better design.
I used this thing once. Worked pretty well. But now I can’t remove the drill from the device. It’s stuck. Any thoughts?
The chuck of the drill can get locked in place pretty tight after all that force, I see it happen on spade bits. If you're looking down on the drill and device, you need to turn the chuck clockwise to get it to release... you might have to "man handle it"
