When I learned to make lye soap from my grandmother in the 70s, we used a huge cast iron pot, melted the lard over an open fire, poured in the lye, and cooked for some time. The hard part was pouring it into the cheese cloth lined wooden crate. That stuff could take a stain out of anything. I also learned how to make lye from wood ash. We sold it at the Yesteryear Fair in Decatur, IL for the historical society. My great-grandmother tried to make soap in her basement around that time, when no one was there, and the lye ate through her aluminum pot, coating the basement floor in soap. Great-grandma was born in 1888 and had quite a personality.
@elizabethcastillo1158 I recall my Mother and Grandmother telling me about wood ash soap they were from southern Italy they made their own soap bars when they would go wash their clothes in the river it sounds like how your grandma made soap thanks for sharing your story 🤩
It sounds like your grandmother was amazing bless her soul💯🙏🏽
Wonderful story, thanks for sharing
Elizabeth, I do hope you pass that knowledge of yours on - important skills that ought to be preserved rather than lost to the annals of time 😊💜

Good morning Mary, had been really looking forward to this video. Your kindness and generosity of spirit is so welcome to all of us watching. Thank you! ☺️
Who would have thought that so much planning and timing goes into making a bar of soap. I now have a new appreciation! Thank you so much for this tutorial Mary. Your son is adorable.
Hi Mary,
I have been a handmade soap maker for 25 years and enjoyed watching your video!! Just a little FYI. If you'll substitute your castor with another oil, it will keep your soap from saponifying so quickly and allow you more ease and time to work with it in the design stages. I've been following you since Dec 2021 and so appreciate your authenticity! My daughter and family were coming for Christmas, and I wanted to make a craft with my 4-year-old granddaughter Abigail and found your video. I was hooked then on your style and talent and your gift in making videos of your work! Abigail and I made the snow pinecone Christmas trees with the wooden stars and colored balls and gave them as gifts to our family. LOVE and blessings to you! I love all the videos and your
Rosemary
I’m so new to this . Wow today was first try. It was total chaos. But I’ll learn I guess. I’m not even sure you’ll see this but…. Can you tell me a better oil to substitute the castor with. I need all the time I can get. Lol Thank you .
@@GSD1963 almond oil, lard, tallow, cocoa butter, palm oil, shea butter, or sunflower oil. I looked it up and this is what I found for substitutes. I was not aware that castor oil would speed it up but I do know that some fragrance and essential oils will as well as using the stick blender. I hope this helps. I don't know if you will need to use a soap calculator or not.
@@icecreamladydriver1606 thank you so much. I use Mary’s recipe . I think the stick blender was my enemy.lol I’m not very good at mixing with that thing yet. I’ll try the palm oil I guess. The fragrance oil I used said it was good for cold pressed soap making. I so appreciate the help. It can only go up from here. Thanks again
@@GSD1963 You will do great, hang in there. I can't tell you how many batches I have thrown out for one reason or another and I still make flops after nearly ten years.
@@icecreamladydriver1606I’m gonna give it my best shot . It can only get better . Lol
That soap looks so good! I didn’t realize how much goes into making soap…very interesting!
Mary, you always amaze me with your creativity, love the shelf John built. Soap making always seems a little complicated, I think I’ll start with candle making, lol. I’m sure it gets easier after a few times.xxx
Good morning Mary. Loved watching this and I will be ordering the Rose and Peony when it is available. The little oval soaps are adorable and perfect for your cottages. I was wondering if you have thought about offering these in a few different scents as a bundle on your shop. That way, your customers could actually smell them before they bought the full sized bar. I always get excited when you have posted a new video. Just love your creativity.
I’ve been using your soap for a couple months now and love how my skin feels!
Making soap is a science! Your explanation was enlightening even to those of us who don’t plan to make it.
Thank you
Oh! I love this video! My Grandmother Tracy made lye-soap using collected bacon grease - a necessity since she lived through the Depression. Her homemade soap was used in the kitchen sink for dishes, in the washing machine for clothes, and in the bathtub for dirty bodies. One of my most precious memories is sleeping between her deliciously clean and pure smelling sheets that were washed with her lye-soap and dried in the sunshine! My soul was filled with delicious joy as so many memories flooded my heart and mind! I am determined to order supplies and start making my own soap too. Thank you again, Mary Yoder, for your delightful video!!!!
My grandma also made soap .She raised 12 children during the depression. She also used the grease from her home made pork rinds . Goodness I wish I had some now. They were so good. We loved sleeping over and her sheets were so crisp and white. And smelt so fresh. Oh how I miss those days.
@@lauraleederos5850 Thanks for sharing your precious memories of your grandmother too. Grandmother Tracy would have huge containers of her homemade soap in her store-room - - - I would give my eye-teeth to be able to walk in there and pull out a few bars to use here at my house!!! Mary Yoder is our inspiration to make our own!
@@junehudgens She sure is !!! I love watching her videos.
There are a lot of steps in the process but oh so worth it!!! Just beautiful and the stand John made is perfect!!! God bless you and your family!
Product presentation and display is everything! You can have a wonderful product, but if it's not displayed nicely people will just pass it by. Great job, Mary, be blessed today!
So fun to watch you make soap! I’ve been making my own cold process soap for years and never tire of it. I think you said you thought a glass bowl could be used when mixing the lye. No! I tried that right at the beginning with a Pyrex bowl. The temperature shoots up so fast when the lye is added that the glass shatters! ❤
What a wonderful episode! I’m very intimidated by soap making but you, my sweet lady, are courageous! Your soaps are beautiful and I bet they smell amazing! Would you ever have thought that you’d be dabbling in so many fabulous crafts??? John’s shelf is beautiful. What a great craftsman he is. Loved seeing the new shop! My mouth dropped open seeing all that gorgeous fabric! I know that people are gonna keep you busy in soap making! Your cottage guests will feel so spoiled! The Air B and B’s that I clean leave handmade goat’s milk soaps out for their guests. People appreciate such special touches like that! I wish you guys all the best!!! 🌼🫶🏻🙌🏻💗😊🧼
I love the pink swirled soap! So pretty. That’s a lot of work. Also love your display stand.
You are very generous sharing your knowledge. I can’t buy from you as I’m in the UK and by the time I’ve paid tax and duty and handling fees it becomes very expensive. But all your products and work looks amazing. 💕
I will never make soap but loved watching the process! Thanks so much for taking the time to video it for us. I’ve heard folks complain at craft fairs and market stalls about the cost of handmade goods. I wish they understood the time and research that goes into the products small producers put into it. Great job! 👏🇨🇦
I feel like I had so much fun with you, watching this! Thank you, Mary!
Mary, this is a wonderful video. You explained everything slow enough to follow along. I’m going to make sure that my daughter watches this as she has gotten into making soap.
Thank you so much Mary, for doing this video! I’ve been making soap for years but have never done the coloring/swirling so I look forward to trying that! I will also be checking out Addies next time I’m in the area 😃 God bless you!
the pink swirl looks like it’s smiling ☺️ i love it. your so talented and such a good getter always doing something new. God bless you and your cottages with lots of success.
Although I have no interest in soap making I found myself enjoying this video. One reason this is my favorite channel is that Mary has so many interests and skills that she shares with us........there's something for everyone, and always something to learn. Mary is a "modern old fashioned woman" and her joy in life is a testament to her faith in Jesus.
This is one of my favorite of your videos. You did such a wonderful job with the content and flow of the process of soap making. And loved the display John made for the store. 💙 Thank you!
I’m always amazed at the quantities of products you can buy in the US. Usually, the largest quantity of a product here in Australia e.g. oils, is only 1 litre/33.8 ounces. It’s quite frustrating when wanting to make soap, candles, face creams etc to have to buy small bottles, which are also very expensive. I always hope that my recipes turn out well so as not to waste time and money. I love your channel and the inspiration it brings me. ❤
So sweet of your husband to make your shelf, it turned out so nice! Your all so creative and I really love how you follow through on your dreams! Everything that you make and sell is of great quality and so pretty 🌷
Mary, I enjoyed watching your process of making soap so much. I'm just now watching this one. I've tried to watch all of your videos from even 4 yrs ago. I enjoy every one of them. You are definately my favorite on UA-cam! Thank you for sharing do much with everyone!❤
Came across your version early this morning. I had decided to stop procrastinating making soap. And there you were giving simple but detailed instructions. Thank you so very much this vedio was just what I needed. Bless you 💕
Wow Mary! I’m so impressed! I love that you enjoy making soap. You found something you love to do. I’ve been following from the beginning of your channel. I just adore you and your work!
White sides were perfect for the display. John did a beautiful job. Thanks for the class on soap making, Mary. I've watched you for a long time and am always amazed at your energy. Take care.
Love the display rack! The soaps in it look so so pretty.!!!
I loved this video. I just received several bars. I got 2 lavender & camomile, 1 oat & honey, 2 Lily of the valley & 1 lavender. This is my second batch. I love it because it is home made & without all of the chemicals in them. They smell so pretty. I keep them stored with my towels so they smell good & my husband is also a big fan. We love the soap. Thank you for sharing the hard work that goes into the soap. Thank you J Fargo in Glendale AZ.
Mary, you are such an inspiration. You’re always trying something new. Thanks for sharing your talent with us. Have a blessed day.
Mary, how awesome to see your process to make your soap.
The Rose and Peony ones look so pretty and I bet they smell wonderful. Can’t wait to see if you have them on your Etsy shop. TYFS your talent, your videos are so calming and interesting.
💜💜💜
You make me smile. I would love to spend the day with you and you show me how to do all the things you are good at. You are a natural. So at ease and talented.
Wow! Very interesting. I never really thought about what it takes to make the handcrafted soaps I often buy. The handcrafted soaps smell so much better than the mass produced soaps.. Thank you for showing us how those pretty slices come to be!
Love your set-up for making soap. Those little half-egg shapes will be adorable in the cottages. What a thoughtful thing to do.
Something I've noticed is that most people who make soap really love doing it. That makes me want to try. Thank you for sharing your process with us.
Description
Amazing, as a little girl my mom made homemade lye soap! Brought back a lot of meriores.
You never fail to amaze me Mary, you really are a little whirlwind! That soap looks absolutely fabulous, and so wish I could smell it 👃, what a brilliant job John made of the shelf unit...you two are most definitely a match made in heaven! You both definitely set your boys splendid work ethics that's for sure, wonderful upload and I'm a tad jealous of all that soap ppl can buy in the shops where you are 😊.. sending blessings & thanks for your continuous hard work.
I really like your video! I like the way you turn your scale to the camera to show what ingredients you are measuring. You very thoro when explaining your soap recipe! Thank you very much! I wish there were more UA-camrs like you!😊
That was SO enjoyable! I’ve always been intrigued by this process.
Mary, the soap making was so interesting to watch, it looks so pretty. John did a great job on your soap shelve. so nice to have someone like him to help you. I wish you the best of luck with the soap,
Nice job! I could almost smell the scent. Thank you for sharing your recipe and soap making skills.
Lovely soaps! I have been making soaps for 18 years now but always love to watch someone doing soaps from time to time. Your displays is awesome, I love old wood!
Hi Mary! Lovely to see you here again. Do you know how great your videos are? I so look forward to them. You are so generous with the information you impart. Love you for it. Thank you ♥️ I’m from Malaysia 😉
I enjoy all your videos, but I think this is my favorite! You do a wonderful job making your soaps and I know I would like to watch this again right away. I’m hoping my daughter and I can come to your area to shop one day soon. We live in the Columbus area, so not too far away and we’ve been wanting to come to purchase some things!
I’m glad you showed all of the work you go through to make your soap. Sometimes people don’t appreciate the time it takes to create something from scratch. Congratulations on getting floor space in a new store. I wish you success!
I am interested in making soap as well, and the videos I seen so far has been very informative. I don't know if I make soap to sell or more for myself. I hope that you do well with Abbie's.
Mary,
I live in Southern California and have been looking for a video on soap making. I’m a bee keeper and want to use the wax and honey. I am so taken by your beautiful heart and how you teach. I am so touched. It goes far beyond soap making but I am a huge fan! I will try your method and let you know how it turns out. I love your soap stand. You are so inspiring. His bless you all all you set your hands to do.🙏🏼♥️
Mary, you are so inspiring! Thank you for sharing your passion. Best wishes.
I loved watching this. Love the soap, love the process, and really love the display stand!!
I loved the video Mary and the display shelf your husband made was really great! I can't wait to buy the rose and peony soap!
Thank you so much for sharing your talent with us and your recipe. I took a cold process soap class earlier this month but the instructor was talking so fast it was hard keeping up and she did not share her recipe so I had no idea how much of anything to make the soap. Loved your presentation and how easy you made the process. Thanks again and hope to see more of your videos.💕🤗
Hi Mary, I enjoyed the video. I’ve been making cold process soap and liquid soap for five years. I make it for family and friends to use at home and for gifts.
Thank you for taking the time to go over the whole process. I am going to try making some soap just for our family, and this video was so helpful. You are awesome Mary!!!!!
Beautiful display for your amazing soaps! That is quite a process. Great video.
Enjoyed watching the process and the shelf is so perfect!
I remember my grandma making lye soap in the early 70’s. Woo Wee!
Homemade soap is the best. We don’t use any store bought soap, this is so much better. I like the soap stand.
Enjoyed seeing the process of making soap. I'm sure your guest will enjoy using your product!
Wonderful Mary! I love your soaps. Can’t wait to purchase the peony one next!🌺
that is quite a production--lots of chemistry!!! and equipment...now I really will appreciate home made soap when i see it now! thank you for this nice video.
Absolutely loved this video!! Your content is always so enjoyable… soap making looks like fun…! Thank you! Remain humble, I very much admire your character.

I love watching this. I loved the rose and peony ones. I think it turned out beautiful you are one amazing lady.
I loved this video! A lot of work goes into soap making. Thanks.
Hi Mary! Love those soaps! They look so pretty. The display looks amazing & more so within the soaps on them. I wish I was in your area. I’m so happy to see that your expanding your business.
I just made my first batch of cold process this morning! It was great fun, can't wait to cut it!! Thank you so much!
Mary, I can almost smell those soaps. They look so nice. Great recipes. I think they will be a big hit! The display shelf looks great in the store. Very cute little store also.

I'm so glad you made this video! I have made soap before but having this video to reference along with your recipe is amazing! I have bought your soap as gifts and the ladies love it including me :) Thanks for sharing this video!
So enjoy watching the process of making soaps. Here in Northeast, PA, we have Amish families. But, in their store, we can use credit cards. I notice their r driving black vans, it makes me happy to see their children, can now wear seat belts.
Great tutorial! Thank you for showing the steps. All your soaps look lovely...❤
Such a wholesome, informative, and great video, thank you for sharing it.
The soap shelf came up great, husband did a great job 🙏🏽👍❤
Your shelf looks beautiful and really complements your gorgeous soap. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you Mary for sharing how you made your soap❤️
Great video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I do appreciate when video content makers try new processes and show them.
Thank you for sharing your love of making soap. It was very interesting to watch. They look so pretty I’d love to smell them . The shelf was great it displayed the soap very well. Thank you for sharing your talent with us your amazing love all that you do.
This is so helpful! I’m recently reading about palm oil being in tons of products we buy, which contributes to deforestation and destroying habitats of orangutans and that has led me to wanting to make my own soap. I also have autoimmune issues and some allergies to store bought soaps. Your video is so helpful and I’m glad you took the time to film this and explain the process :)
Great Job Mary! I enjoy making soap as well, but I’ve never made this recipe where I can fluff the top up! I will try this. I love the smell of homemade soap. . 🌿💚🌹
This is one of my favorite of your videos. You did such a wonderful job with the content and flow of the process of soap making. And loved the display John made for the store. Thank you!
Thank you for including the address at Addie's! A new place i can check out when I go down in a couple of weeks. 😊

Thank you so much for sharing. I am new to soap making and look forward to trying the cold processed method soon.
Love the scenery! Just perfect
Thank you for sharing this Mary!! 🤗

So fun! I used to make soap. Enjoyed watching. Thanks for sharing
John nailed your soap shelves!
That was a great video, thanks for sharing your talents with us. I enjoyed seeing the process, and the soap looks so pretty.
They turn amazing! I wish we had stores and community around here like that
It looks beautiful. Love the colors you chose.
Thank you for the tutorial! I love making soap but I’m always looking for a good recipe.
Thanks for making these and for sharing. Those slight imperfections are no big deal. It just shows it is home mode. I know that you are a perfectionist. It is part of your personality. (It is an endearing and sweet personality trait.) But to us who are your fans :) it just cute. I love anything homemade.
Love all your videos, I’m sure the soap smells amazing and it’s beautiful as well.
Hi Mary, I am actually from Ohio, in between Mansfield and Sandusky! I live in North Carolina now but definitely miss the Amish country always love going through there on my way to visit! Love watching you when I can pop in when I’m not recording videos for my channel! Absolutely love everything you do and the soaps are so sweet I love what a great gift they would make! Hope you have a wonderful & blessed rest of the week! Tonya
My girls and I just tried this recipe tonight! It was our first ever batch. We did the two color like you did with strawberry and lemon. Very fun time with my HS & MS daughters. Thank you for this video!!!
Love your beautiful soaps, I’m enjoying mine from the Mother’s Day purchase. Looking forward to more! ❤️
