  • My name is Jared Beckwith, I’m a registered EEG Technologist. In this video I show the four pathways listed by ABRET to qualify to sit for the R. EEG T. board exam. Some pathways require one year of college and some don’t require any college! Thanks for watching, I hope you all learned how to become a registered EEG technologist like myself.

Jared! I can't find my old comment from a couple months ago (maybe it was on a different account)
but I was talking to you abt a program near me that would take 2 yrs to complete instead of 1. It bummed me out but my local hospitals only look for graduates from there or programs around the same length!
Anyways, I attended a conference and learned more about it. Turns out the instructor is the director of the neurology lab in one of the biggest hospitals here and they regularly hire students part time! That made me super happy to hear. (Study and WORK at your future job?? Thats so coollll)
But I honestly can't thank you enough, I think a year ago I came across this career and there was hardly any useful info on Google so I came on UA-cam and came across your recently uploaded video about your first day on the job, I've watched ever since and I fell in love with this career from afar.
I'm 2 years out of highschool and had no clue what I was going to do, but now Im very confident. I cant wait to start this program :)
Also you're super accurate that 50,000 should be the minimum when you're looking for a job in this career, I've been told the same. However even that number is pretty outdated I believe. :)

I just took the test on December 2nd and unfortunately I didn’t pass, I used pathway 4 it was my first time taking it and I took a an online course through trusted neuro academy “ Larry head” and also utilized the practice exam from aset, I was scoring super high in them but I know I don’t test well and I’m going to take it again I just really want to nail it this time. That $700 hurt lol with me not passing. You have given much helpful info and I really appreciate it. If you you have any info for me while going for my 2nd attempt it would be so much appreciated. Hi Jeff, thanks for reaching out. I think part of your problem is a limiting belief saying “I know I don’t test well.” The first step to passing is believing you can! In a month, ABRET will send you more details about the exam and show what areas you scored the worst. I would study relentlessly whatever you scored the worst on. If you do that, I believe the next time you take the test you will pass. The question is, do you believe? Good luck my friend!

Hi Jared, I’ve been a follower since the beginning of my EEG Tech journey. I’m at a point where I want to become registered I have well over 100 documented studies. I’ve heard since in Florida that it’s not mandatory to become registered but I rather have the security to know my worth at new job opportunities.
I didn’t negotiate my first contract at my current hospital so I’m under paid but picked up a ton of experience.
My question to you is what pathway did you choose. Maybe I missed you mentioning it in your video. And also to take the exam was it somewhere local, online ?

Even though it’s not required to be registered, I think it’s a good idea so you’ll have more job opportunities (travel, remote, etc.) and easier to negotiate salary.

The one time I commented one of your videos I had just gotten excepted into a Neurodiagnostic program in San Diego,ca. I about now 3 weeks away from graduating with an Associates and Certificate in my Neurodiagnostic Program. Your videos are helpful and thank you for that!
I just wanted to ask your opinion on something. I go to school in San Diego but I live 2 hours away in an area where EEG doesn't actually exist in any hospital or clinic, so no jobs in my area. Besides San Diego, the closest place where they do EEGS is in the Palm Springs area, which is about an hour and a half away. I had my mind made up that wherever I worked I was going to have to commute for awhile until I could afford a place close to where I work. My instructors had advised that I try going up to Neurologists in my area to see if they were interested in EEG and if they needed a tech for. I don't if EEG doesn't exist in my area because there is no demand or if Neurologists in my area simply have no experience with it. I also don't if Neurologists just hire people like that or if you ever heard of techs just having their own hustle like that. If you were in my shoes what would you do?

    • @jaredbeckwith
      @jaredbeckwith  Рік тому +1

In my experience I have known multiple neurologists who would like to hire an EEG tech, but can’t find one. Not all neurologists specialize in EEG, so you’ll have to reach out to a lot of doctors. If that doesn’t work, you can apply to a company called Corticare that might do in-home studies around your area. If that doesn’t work, you can look into moving or taking a travel EEG contract. Since there’s a low supply of people properly trained in EEG, you’ll always be able to find a job if you try hard enough. Don’t procrastinate, and start applying now so you’ll have at least one offer by graduation. Congrats on finishing your program & I wish you a great career Christian!

@Molida Chhorm hey! I went to Mesa College. We were the first cohort and they have the second going right now. Honesty I really enjoyed the program. You spend about six months in lab practicing measurements and hooking up electrodes before you ever go into clinicals, so you already have the foundation. You get to work with the 3 different types of EEG machines (Cadwell, Natus, Nihon Kohden) The instructors are all very nice. I never had an issue with any of them. All the techs I worked with in clinical were very supportive and patient with me while I improved my skills. All the lecture courses were online, so you only had to show up for lab, which made it flexible for my schedule with work. So overall, great experience for me.

      1. You technically don’t need to be certified to do an EEG. Being board registered only gives better job security and small pay raise.
      2. The 1-2 year programs give a certificate but not associates. Although there are a few colleges that will give you credit towards a associates/bachelors degree from your EEG credentials.
      3. I think getting an associates is a waste of time and will not get you any extra pay in this field. There are many accomplished EEG techs who never did any college. In my opinion it only makes sense to work towards associates/bachelors if you plan to manage an EEG lab one day.

Some hospital might hire you without any college if you can prove that you know how to measure and mark a head with the 10-20 system. That might be a little difficult, so a good backup plan is a college that will help you secure a clinical site to teach you. You do online classes and 2 days a week at a local hospital.
