The biggest change that occurred is with cleaning the telemetry boxes, which we don't actually do in our war room (poor ventilation). The COVID floor stores a specific amount of boxes for their patients to prevent cross contamination. I still work the same amount of hours every week and it really hasn't changed our workflow. I imagine the situation would be different if my job included patient interaction though. Hope this helps! 😊
The RNs and PCTs put the leads on the patients. At our hospital the monitor tech literally just monitor the patient's rhythm. We are very fortunate to work in this type of environment because most places require the MTs to put the patient's on tele and troubleshoot them.

I use to do this years ago. But the way things have changed it concerns me. I use to eork on a heart floor and we had up to 24 pts. Now they combined and moved the ekg techs. Meaning a tech can have up to 60 patients, and you may not even be on sight. So you have to call the hospital and floor, and have staff check on the pt. When the techs were on the floor, in the department if staff was busy and leads came off, which they always do. The ekg tech can run into the room and fix it. My point if safety, also it can be difficult to get breaks, etc. These concerns have kept me from returning to this job.
I am just finishing my hours to get certified as an EKG Tech. I am really interesting in becoming a EKG Monitor Tech in the hospital do you need any other class or certifications to become one. Thank you for everything love your video.

Thank you TechQueenQ. This is far the most informative video I’ve watched on Monitor Tech. I have a question, I am currently a PCA but I would like to do exactly what you do…my question is do i take the Telemetry tech training or the EKG training??If you could please guide me, I would appreciate. Thanks
Hi! The best advice I can give you is to ask the monitor techs at your facility (or the nearest one) what you need as far as training. My job offered on the job training, so I'm not certified. Hope this helps😊
I plan to take a class on EKG next year so I can get a job as a monitor/EKG tech. I need the experience for med school I’m 2 minutes and 37 seconds in and it already sounds pretty hard. Hopefully they’ll train me before I start on my own even though I should be certified at that point anyway
Issy learning to read ekgs can be hard. It's kind of like learning a new language. I went through a 4 hour course through the hospital and got hired for a position soon after. They trained me for about 1 week and I made sure I asked lots of questions and I was very honest about my lack of experience. Try learning to identify the basic rhythms as fast as you can though (sinus rhythm, afib/aflutter, junctional, etc).
TeachQueenQ The hospital themselves gave you a class? And it was only 4hours? I thought it took a month to complete the class from I looked up, but then again I wasn’t aware hospitals could also teach you. I’ll have to do more research Hopefully when and if they hire me I’ll remember to ask questions as well. I’m the type of guy to ask a lot of questions and write them down so I don’t forget, hopefully it doesn’t annoy them 😅
Yeah I was already working for the hospital and my manager pushed me to take the class. It was just a crash course, so I'm not a certified tech, but I passed the test 😂.
You’re expected to remember them as soon as you finish the class. Most places have charts up but a lot of what you see on the screen will NOT look like the charts, books, practice strips, etc. They tend to show perfect examples of rhythms/dysrhythmias. The more you do the job the easier it becomes to recognize them. There will be times you will have to really think on a rhythm because it will look funky.
Being an EKG technician. What would you advice to those first time as an EKG tech. And what are the things that needs to be ready and prepare? Im scared and afraid as well. Btw i enjoyed this kind of video, hopefully that you make a video like this. Tutorial about using the machine and recording the patients heart activity. Thanks
I want to do this so bad... I’ve been doing ekgs for 11 years and pretty familiar with rhythms but I’m so afraid to miss something…like the heart blocks 😫.
There is no way to miss it once you learn/know what to look for. One thing about it, if they are throwing blocks they are going to be Brady. You just need to be able to see what,if anything, is causing it on the strip.
quick question, do you determine your findings yourself or does the computer give you an interpretation? Also, do you thnk that its something that can be done while going to Nursing school?
@@jaredbeckwith Thanks for the response. I subscribed to your channel just now, and I have been watching your videos (without realizing it was you haha). So from what I gather the typical path is to take a year-long certification program that coincides with on the job training right from the onset? This is unpaid for that first year until certification? Do you need to arrange this with a hospital prior to acceptance into an EEG program? Thanks for any insight! :)
Thanks for this video! Is this something I can do while in school studying something else? As in is there any down time in between so I can work on homework while at work during the night shift?
I was looking for quick transition out of ems & applied to a local hospital here in Ny recently & was only offered $21hr... I thought the pay was at least $23/$24. Guess I’ll stay working EMS. at the higher pay. Fml. Otherwise good video thank you!
I've seen really impressive pay for jobs listed as 'traveling monitor techs'. More than $24/Hr, for sure. You have to be cool with travel though, of course :P
Hi! This is a great question! Watching the monitors is one part of this role. There are alarms beeping at all times, but they make different sounds to differentiate the event. So you need to be able to hear the alarms because there’s no way you can keep your eyes on all 50+ patients at one time. We also make a lot of calls to the floor staff and there are overhead pages we need to hear. Most of the equipment has settings that allow you to adjust the volume - phones, Vocera, monitor alarms, etc. With that being said… I think that if you are in a unit with multiple Monitor Techs it would be helpful. So if you’re interested in this role, I’d encourage you to shadow someone and see if you’re comfortable😊.
Yes! I just to learned to deal with it. Unfortunately this job requires you to be a nag 😅lol… Meeting the nurse in person helps though. I have noticed that when people put a face to a name/voice, they are more kind.
im so confused about the ppl in the comments talking about going to school to be an EKG tech bc this video is about monitor techs not EKG techs (different positions) and since when do you have to go to school to be an EKG tech??? monitor techs monitor the patients with telemetry boxes (aka heart monitors). EKG techs are the ones who do the actual EKGs on patients. im a patient care tech and at my hospital i can do EKGs. we have EKG techs as well but there are only a few so sometimes if an EKG can't wait for the EKG tech to come then i will be asked to do it. i have no formal training. someone taught me how to connect the EKG leads to a patient and use the EKG machine and that was it. anyone who wants to do this can probably just apply to a hospital or healthcare facility with this position and they will provide you with the training
Thank you so much for this video. I am a mother and trying to find a quick career to go into, because I am too going to college to be a teacher~! Do you have any tips to juggle life, work, and school?
Thanks for this video. I live in Houston and am thinking of enrolling at HCC for either Telemetry Tech or EKG Tech. I've been comparing the 2 programs. I got a lot of idea of the Tele job from this video. What's your opinion of EKG Tech for a job in Houston? I guess it's more patient-oriented (face to face) and more mobility during the day. Any info you can provide is appreciated!

Thank you for sharing your day. Was super helpful
This is helpful, looking into doing ekg or phlebotomy and leaning toward ekg. Found a class to take in it.
literally same. i’m leaning towards ekg too
I want to share my experience as a monitor tech, but didn’t know if I needed the hospitals approval? Can you share more about this process?
Very informative. Love the video hun ♥
I plan to take a class on EKG next year so I can get a job as a monitor/EKG tech. I need the experience for med school
I’m 2 minutes and 37 seconds in and it already sounds pretty hard.
TeachQueenQ
The hospital themselves gave you a class? And it was only 4hours? I thought it took a month to complete the class from I looked up, but then again I wasn’t aware hospitals could also teach you. I’ll have to do more research
Hopefully when and if they hire me I’ll remember to ask questions as well.
@@TeachQueenQ what position did you have at the hospital before monitor tech?
I worked as a patient care tech.
this video was excellent, thank you.
Thank you for watching! I’m glad you enjoyed it! 😊
How long do they give you to remember all the rhythms ? Starting off do they have charts of the different rhythms to match up to the monitor ?
Thanks
What an Interesting job!!🤔
Yes it can be very interesting! 😊
I want to do this so bad... I’ve been doing ekgs for 11 years and pretty familiar with rhythms but I’m so afraid to miss something…like the heart blocks 😫.
That's what made me changed my mind in doing this 😓
There is no way to miss it once you learn/know what to look for. One thing about it, if they are throwing blocks they are going to be Brady. You just need to be able to see what,if anything, is causing it on the strip.
thanks for the review of the position...just received a certification + ACLS+BLS so ready to go
Omg congratulations!!!
quick question, do you determine your findings yourself or does the computer give you an interpretation? Also, do you thnk that its something that can be done while going to Nursing school?
Awesome video! Well done!
Thank you!
How many patients do you usually have to keep track of?
Also, thank you so much for this video. It’s so helpful
I do a similar job monitoring EEG brain waves!
Is that a job/career you can enter with a certification/diploma program or do you need to complete an AAS/BS?
@@zacharyshort384 you don’t technically need a certification, but most people do a 12 month college program.
I’m an EKG Tech but I won’t to go up to the monitor room..ty for sharing
Thanks for this video! Is this something I can do while in school studying something else? As in is there any down time in between so I can work on homework while at work during the night shift?
Have job interviews Monday
How often do monitor techs place the device on a patient ?
Do you think it's better to be a ekg tech or monitor tech?
Just got hired at hospital for unit clerk / monitor tech I have a EKG certification but not much experience I’m a little nervous 😬 any advice?
I'm trying to become an EKG Technician, just find it a little hard to recognize the rhythms.
get the book "ECG's Made Easy"
Is a monitor tech different from a EKG tech? I plan on taking a EKG certification course.
Does the computer take the measurements?
I was looking for quick transition out of ems & applied to a local hospital here in Ny recently & was only offered $21hr... I thought the pay was at least $23/$24. Guess I’ll stay working EMS. at the higher pay. Fml. Otherwise good video thank you!
I've seen really impressive pay for jobs listed as 'traveling monitor techs'. More than $24/Hr, for sure. You have to be cool with travel though, of course :P
Could this be a good job for someone who is deaf/ hard of hearing?
Respect to you... I know I can't do this because it's to hard
Is there a school you would recommend? I live in the DFW area.
If you're in DFW, Tarrant County College has a certificate program. Check out their website and look up their program.
seems like a cool place to work.
Have you ever experienced nurses getting annoyed with you having to call multiple times to check on the patient if so how do you deal with it
They are different , but my guess is that some employers require you to have formal training and some don't.
God loves the person reading this truly unconditionally ❤❤
Thank you so much for this video. I am a mother and trying to find a quick career to go into, because I am too going to college to be a teacher~! Do you have any tips to juggle life, work, and school?
If I become EKG tech and get hired to perform ekgs do I also have to be a monitor tech?
Thanks for this video. I live in Houston and am thinking of enrolling at HCC for either Telemetry Tech or EKG Tech. I've been comparing the 2 programs. I got a lot of idea of the Tele job from this video. What's your opinion of EKG Tech for a job in Houston? I guess it's more patient-oriented (face to face) and more mobility during the day. Any info you can provide is appreciated!
Wow, I'm in Houston also looking into the same thing.
Relocating to EP or Houston and I'm looking into this!
I just got this job and I’m really nervous about having to learn the medical terms and making mistakes, do you have any tips😭
Question, regarding on walkie talkie, i have a hard hearing, will it affect my job?
