I’ve been quietly watching for a while now. I just want to say you are my favorite UA-camr! I love how real you are. I’m constantly striving to be a better Christian, to be a better mom, wife, teacher, and I find so much inspiration in your videos! We are working towards buying our first home this year and meeting some other financial goals. I am new to budgeting as well and I love this video ❤️

Hi Ashleigh, I discovered your channel through your sister’s channel, and I love it. You are right, there is so much freedom in a budget because you’ve designated where the money is going so no guilt when you do make a purchase within that budget. We found ourselves in a financial pickle about three years ago - husband’s wage was stuck, and cost of living was going up. We did a lot of re-evaluation of our spending and started budgeting. It has been a life changer. I’m a pen and paper girl too, for everything, EXCEPT our budget, I use EveryDollar, and I love it. It does all the math for me, and sometimes the month is going along, and life happens. We need a little more money in an area, and I can look at where we might be underspending in another area and move it. Our budget is for the most part firm, but it’s sometimes needs to be a little fluid. Best of luck to you guys this month, and I look forward to seeing how the month goes for you. ❤️

I've been a budget girl for years and every time I talk budget with others they get closed off about sharing $ amounts and would look at me like I'm crazy when I share actual $ amounts. I think its great you are open enough to share real $ amounts!!! It really gives a tire picture of what a budget can do for your sanity and financial freedom! The thing I do for house maintenance, car maintenance, and kids clothes budget is to have a sinking fund; where I set a side $67 a month for clothes and $200 for maintenance stuff. So when the need arises there is a pretty hefty some of money back for those thing and then it doesn't have to come from savings or emergency funds. This can be a lot for new budget-ers; but it makes a huge difference in the long run! It can be tricky to keep up with. So I recommend setting up a new checking account, make a list of all sinking funds and how many $ set for each one and just moving the money when needed. Your budget is very similar to ours we just put value on different things and Lord knows I could use help in the food budget area...we just like to eat. Thanks for opening sharing this. I believe it will help others more than you know!

First time subscriber. 🙂 Great video! Some may find the numbers boring BUT I found this video very encouraging. 😁 I've really needed to focus more on buying really what we need instead of accidental "willy nilly".
Having a meal plan based on what's in the house first has helped a lot.
And prepping drinks, snacks, lunches if I plan to go out & run errands that day has been awesome to stay away from fast food. I make my fancy coffee at home, and bring juice/milk for the kiddo. Bring a cooler or lunch bags for us with sandwiches/snacks. Keeps the hangry away too. 😂

I love pen and paper too!
I've started doing something new with our budgeting. I'm definitely not perfect it at it but I have been trying to have one spending day a week. Each week it may vary but it's usually a weekend day. All week long I will write down what I think I need and then when it comes to shopping day I look at my numbers, see what I have left in the bdget, and that gives me time to really think about what I'm spending money on as well as being prepared for what I might need in the coming week. It's really helped me to be intentional with my spending as well as easier for keeping track of purchases. If something doesn't fit in the budget that month I will add it to the next month's list. I also try to do as much grocery/household shopping at the beginning of the month so I'm stocked up and then just do fill ins each week (on my shopping day).

This was so great to watch!! You’re doing awesome and it will get so much easier the more you do it. I don’t know if you do this with amazon or not, but I actually made myself a wish list. So anything that I’m influenced to purchase or I just find myself, goes right to my wish list. And then I leave the app. Just doing that has dropped my actual purchases down tremendously! I’ve gone back and looked through my wish list and there’s a lot of stuff that I’ve deleted after the fact bc I just didn’t want it anymore. Anyway, just a suggestion. It’s also a great thing if anyone asks you what you want for your birthday or for Christmas. 🙂

One thing that I hear great things about and plan on doing is setting up a second account with your bank and every time you buy something it rounds up and puts the difference in your account. So if it’s 2.50 it takes out $3 and 50 cent goes into the savings

At the best points I would start going down my bill section in YNAB a second time, but I would still wind up playing whack-a-mole from it. I was thinking about upping the automatic payment to my savings account to cover saving for sinking funds, but I wonder if when taxes come in it might be better to switch all of it to savings and then transfer once a month.

I am a pen and paper type of ‘budgeteer’ and definitely the ‘nerd’ and saver in my marriage. I’ve written a budget almost every month of my marriage. But one thing I’ve realized is that it’s not enough that a budget is written, or that all the numbers add up on my paper. The budget itself doesn’t transform and build finances.
I had to compromise my pen and paper and use a digital spreadsheet. Because I’m budgeting with my husband, and that’s what he prefers. But he also compromised and started writing his spending down on pen/paper (which we input once a week into the spreadsheet). Because he’s budgeting with me, and that’s what I prefer. If my husband is doing math for a budget, I have to be okay with his method of math. Likewise, if I’m doing the math, he has to be okay with my method. Because we’re not just writing a budget... he in his way (if at all) and me in mine.... rather, we’re budgeting TOGETHER.
And when both husband and wife are unified on the goals of the budget and the numbers of the budget, that’s when finances start to transform! Our marriage has benefited so much from communicating about finances and compromising on ‘stuff’ in the budgeting process. There’s no power play during budget ‘meetings.’ We can each offer perspective the other may not have been aware of (‘we need a clothing budget this month for these needs....’ ‘we need a car budget this month for tires....’). And now we’re BOTH vested in this plan and know it in detail.... very grateful for all the Dave Ramsey podcasts, Rachel Cruze shows, and Dave Ramsey-inspired channels that have driven home the KEY to working on and building finances- husband/wife being unified, communicating and compromising! 😃
We’re still working on it, but we’ve come so far! I’m proud of us. Haha

But it’s 20 minutes to town for me with 4 kids under 6 in tow. And so it’s not *easy* for me to shop. And AP would make it too easy. I’m sure I would also be tempted to spend a $ or 2 more on something from there to not have to go to the store, if I could get the item right away.
